      Thank you! I don't think I really show how I care for them in fluval in my other videos but I basically just keep it from drying out. It takes several weeks for them to root depending on the environment and once the water level gets low I'll refill it. I'm usually filling them up twice a week :)

    Oohh your variegated Alocasia is stunning! 😍 I’m a die hard Super Thrive person also, I use every time I water unless I’m fertilizing. Also use it as a foliar for Hoyas they seem to love it too. 💚 It’s not very attractive but I did see someone put tons of wooden chop sticks in their plants too keep the cats out. Hope their wasn’t too much damage.

    You can use aluminum foil on the shelves because the sound in the texture will deter the cat from jumping up there and you're not going to want to keep it flat You're going to want to like crumple it up so that way it's like kind of rough underneath their feet I mean there is other options out there like they have I don't know how to explain it it's more like when a cop is in hot pursuit and they throw out that strip and it's got a little things that puncture the tire they have something like that kind of for cats also but I think that's kind of mean myself I have two cats myself so I use the aluminum foil method and it tends to work and the other one is actually really scared of like Saran wrap so if the aluminum foil doesn't work try Saran wrap cuz it sticks to their feet and they don't like that either I hope that helps and thank you for the corn video because I did not know what to do with mine I've got a few of them that are already rooted I rooted in water and I didn't know what to do with them after that

    I have started to like Alocasias because yours are stunning! I've been afraid to give them a go, but I definitely love them now. I got 5 Maharani corms, that now that they popped look like Black Velvet instead and I'm terrified to care for them haha! Have you posted photos of any of your Maharani corms so that I can compare?

    • @melissamccauley2303
      @melissamccauley2303 Рік тому +1

      Maharani is a hybrid of Black Velvet and Melo so that might explain it, maybe they'll get more Melo-like with time :)

      @@melissamccauley2303 oh God! I had no idea about that, that is very interesting. I truly hope so, from what I've heard about Black Velvets, they are not at all easy to care for, or well, regardless of the care they don't thrive. So having Black Velvet as my first Alocasia is not what I envisioned😅I got the corms as Maharani ones, so I truly hope they are it!

      @@melissamccauley2303 hahaha! From what I've heard, hybrids are always easier! I'll keep note on that in case it ends up being a Black Velvet. I'm interested in an update🤞I have had one experience of transferring a plant from fluval to soil and I noticed leaving some fluval on roots rotted some of them. Maybe I watered too much trying to settle it in?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa Рік тому +1

      possibly! the roots are so thin and tiny it's hard to balance the watering sometimes. You don't want to over do it but don't want to underwater either. I'm trying to treat it more like moss and water again more when it gets on the dryer side.

    I got a baby frydek variegated a few months ago and it’s not doing to hot im trying to figure out if it’s just cause of winter or if im overwatering I’ve always heard keeping soil wet is how you should keep them but im starting to think maybe I should give it a break for a few days between waterings? Idk I just know I paid a lot then I’d normally pay for a plant I hope I can keep it alive until spring ugh 😭😭😭 did you buy yours big already or as a baby? Mine came in moss/perlite mix which I still have it in

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa Рік тому +1

      Most of my collection started small! I don't keep my alocasia soil wet, they mostly dry out. They like more watering consistency I have found so I water them thoroughly at least once a week right now and let them drain. They're in a chunky mix so they get airflow which is really important :)

    • @angelahurt2148
      @angelahurt2148 Рік тому

      Thank you! I still have it in the mix it was sent in moss and perlite, and I water from the bottom so I know it’s getting what it needs but it’s definitely possible I’m overwatering so I will try to water once a week and see if she recovers I didn’t want to repot until the spring to avoid stressing it out but I have had it about 3 months now!

    I just bought an 8 lb of fluval stratum. I know it breaks down and sometimes it can’t be reused for new props. Can you mix it with soil mix since it has some nutrients? I hate to throw it considering it’s not cheap. Like leca, it can be reused either as a medium or to add aeration to soil mix. Wondering where else we can use the leftover fluval stratum. Thanks!

      ah yes good eye! I set some up hydroponically like you would do with leca. I poked some holes in the first cup and set it in another cup without holes. I was hoping the water reservoir would help it not dry out as much but I found it still dries about the same so all the new ones I do are just one cup!
