Old German "Alexanderwerk" Grater Restoration | Mister Patina
In this Video i‘m restoring an old Grater from "Alexanderwerk". My dad gave it to me, it was laying around in his old barn for a long time. These Graters were made between ~ 1880 and 1930. Its got 2 "modes" - if you turn it right ways, it grates rough, if you turn it left ways, it grates more fine. It worked very well, but had some bad noises when using, and the wooden handle didnt spin anymore. Time to restore this beauty!
I started with disassembling all the wood and metal parts, and gave them a nice wash. The grinding wheel was a little bent, so i made it round again using a hammer and piece of wood in my vise. After the rough metal work was done, i disassembled the handle by using a angle grinder. Before sandblasting the parts, i removed the most of the paint from the main grinder body, because i didnt want to have the paint in my sandblasting cabinet. Of course the next step was sandblasting all the rusty parts. The next step was filing all the surfaces from the main body smooth, because i didnt want to add a too thick layer of bodyfiller. After filing was done i sanded the filingmarks away with an 80 grit, before attaching the bodyfiller. When the filler was dried, i also sanded it with from p80 to 320grit. Now the parts are ready for the new paintjob. I applied 2 coats of wet in wet primer, before spraypainting the parts with "flamered" spraypaint. After drying the parts turned out very well. The inner areas of the main body were painted with a food compatible paint, which is called "Kelterlack". While drying, the handle bolt and the graterdrum got nickel plated in a nickelbath with electrolysis. The small screw, which holds the handle to the graterdrum got blued. i heated it to around 300 degrees celsius and quenched it in olive oil afterwards, it turned out nice black and rustproof. The wooden handle got sanded on a drill, after that i applied wood oil on it for better protection and a nice finish. All parts were ready for reassembly now. After reassembly, i tested the Grater with Cashew Nuts and Almonds. Because of a missing wood block, i used an empty botttle to push the nuts into the grater. The result is great and ive got a new tool for my apartment :-)

Hi dear friend. My name is Hadi and I live in Iran. I was amazed at your accuracy and creativity in doing things. dude I am a fan of your channel. I introduce your UA-cam channel to all the people of my country and I pray to God that you and your family and everyone you love are always healthy.😍🙏🙏

Really like your podcast. The attention to detail is a constant with your projects. Well done Sir
Thanks a lot! Iam glad you like it!
I really like that you put the food safe paint on the inside like you did with the fruit press, that's a point that's overseen to often
Oh yeah, finally someone recognized...:D
That was my first concern... i hoped you would use foodsafe paint, and you did! Very nice :)
@@misterpatina This is what UA-cam is for. This video entertains and informs. I did not even know that " food safe paint" was a thing before this, Fruit press is in my queue!
Im amazed by this piece of restoration art. I'm already looking forward for next video
Thank you, sir, very much! Iam already looking forward for your next project!

Hey man, thank you so much! Iam really glad you’re enjoying my work and my humour 😄
Thanks!
Exactly :)
That tiny hand always cracks me up
Danke! Ich liebe holländisches Bier :-)
Congratulations! Again!😁
Thanks Fabio 🙂✌️
You had me at witbier.
Nice one!
Hey Six, man! Thanks! 🙂
Grate work
Haha, classic. Thanks!
Bonus points for a wonderful Dutch beer.
...and as a truly beer lovin' german ive got to say, it was really one of the best ive ever had! :)
Yes what a very nice Job and Video auch total Hammer ❤️👍❤️
Haha, danke!
Ok boy that's pretty cool, I thought it was for cheese. Great job brother keep them coming.
Hey Tim, thank you! I think a piece of cheese wouldn’t stop this grater 🙂
@@misterpatina I agree
.
Very cool.
Thanks David! :)
Restorations are very satisfing!🛠 "He who is not satisfied with a little is satisfied with nothing."
Keep them coming, conrats on 4k! 💣💣💣
Thanks Bro! 🙂
The main thing is that this is done for yourself. Nice job!
Thanks man!
The tiny hand cracks me up every time! 🤣
Nice job well done.
Hey Mate, thanks a lot!
Great Restoration! I liked the white paint in the throat of the grater. I liked the subtitles.
Thanks Bro!
Perfect,just perfect my friend.
Hey man, thanks a lot! :)
Excellent work on the nice little grinder. Nickel plating was especially good.
Hey Thomas, im glad you enjoyed 🙂

Hé, Mister Patina! Eindelijk een nieuwe video van jou! Ik heb er op gewacht. Tien punten!
love your channel! keep up the good work!
Thanks Bro!
Ow i really, really, liked this! What a great channel... Congrats from Brazil!
Thanks Casal! Greets from germany!
My grandmother had something similar to this, except it was cast iron and made in the US.
I'm a huge fan of history, and you restore history. You have a loyal fan.
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate! 🙂
Nice work. Again! I really like your sense of humor too. The doll hand! 🤣
Thanks again 😉 It’s not easy sharing and understanding this type of humor, without talking and just showing my hands. But I think the finger hand does it’s work 😄
Yeah! For a moment I wondered if that grinder was that big!
😄😄😄
Very nice!
Well done, sir.
Thanks, sir.
Nice job again, man! It was a bit sad to see the container with that bizarre design on it not make a return for the bluing portion, but the rest of the restoration made up for it hahaha. This 'Theodore Barrett Sr.' fellow left a comment 15 hours ago with seven thumbs up, so I'll one up him and leave eight: 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Haha, thanks! Yeah the container didnt came up this time, but it only will be a classic when its not used frequently :D Gadzooks, i thought he made my day, but in the bottom of my heart i knew you gonna make it :D
Me: thats a really nice cheese grater!
You: *adds nuts*
Me: oh...
I love coming back and rewatching all your videos. I must have cycled through a dozen times. But i love watching you add careful capfuls of degreaser vs pouring a bunch in. I am of the pour a bunch in mindset.
Logic tells me more cleaner makes more clean. Therefore... add more
Great job! Nice video. 😃👍🏼
Hey David, thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed 🙂
Super!!
Thanks! 🙂
Love your work. Highlighting the letters and a coat of clear over that, and it would have been perfect. Regardless, it’s your piece and you manage it the way you want. I’ve subscribed because I loved your razor restoration so much. I’m glad I did because I’m looking forward to view the rest of your work. 👍🇦🇺
Hey Shed, thanks for your nice comments, it’s very motivating! I’m glad you subscribed, I will release my next videos in 12 days - and if you loved the razor, you will also love this next project. A little hint: lots of brass 🙂 stay safe mate! ✌️🇩🇪

Thanks a lot! I give a lot of my freetime to upload a new video every two weeks 🙂✌️
15:12 that's why I love jarmany
Products. Love your work
I really hope you did a test for lead paint on that. You might want to get some of the pen type tests just in case if you don't already have them.
Its FOOD grater... smh
@@leeeeeee2796 And back in the day they put lead pain on EVERYTHING. They didn't know how bad it could be. smh
Well that would only be a problem if you want to use it regularly but he sandblasted it and put the right food safe paint on the inside so everything is fine
@@mazevx2451 The problem with lead paint is that it can get into the air through removal an gets into your system that way, not just through contact.
Beautiful 👌🏾
Thanks Andrew!
Spasibo Bolshoye!
Perfect like always. I would like to see the letters painted also.
Thanks Theo! I will restore an alexanderwerk 5252 (bean slicer) soon, here I will paint the letters too 🙂
And not a shred of plastic still got my great great grass bean slicer mincer .
Witzig...
Awesome job

Wonderful work and nice arm bro! :)
Thank you.
Haha, thanks man!
Really nice 👍
Thanks! 🙂
Okay... I am going to say what everyone is thinking.
That was some impressive filing.
Haha, thank you so much! Youll find more filing in my "Vise restoration" Video ;-)
👍👍👍
Well done ! Nice restoration job! 👍👏
As I also have old kitchen utensils with similar drum, I was wondering what they were covered with and also how to sharpen all the small holes?... You answered 1 of my 2 questions about the drum : cover it with nickel plating. Remains the 2nd question 😉 .
Instead of the bottle 🍺(to push the food) you could make a wooden pusher, with a square shape to slide into the top of the device. And a semicircle shape for the side of the drum. With a rim at the top (wider than the square opening of the device) to stop the pusher and prevent it from being grated.
I have 1 electric grater from the 60s that has a pusher with this shape...
Haha, hey Domi!
When these Graters came out there was a wooden block (like you said) originally with them. The problem was, that i found out later, after the video came out. If i wouldve knew before, ive made a new wooden block.
Youre definitely right! :-)
The hand at 0:57 hahaha
The helping hand! :D
:-D
Moin Horst, ja, tolle Firma mit interessanten Tools!
This is really Great that you can do some Grating with a Greater Grate. I am truly Grateful for this video. This is better than Corn Flakes, and we all know what they are.
Theyre Grate! :D
Estupendo 👌💜
Gracias!
Gostei.
I'm new to the channel. What's with the rubber hand? It's creepy!
It’s the helping hand 🤚
Being humorous 🙃
Belo trabalho. Gosto muito de restaurações. Muito bom mesmo.👏👍🇧🇷
Muito Obrigado 🙂🇩🇪
Great job. Are you not concerned about lead paint?
So did Alexanderwerk produce every household item that there is for a German household? They must have been a massive company. they seem to have made everything.
They were pretty big and yes, they made mostly everything. Thanks for watching 🙂
My grandmother had one very like this, we used to grate cheese with it!! I loved playing with it.
Beautiful Mr P.! Like the way you nickel plate the pieces that came that way too. Was wondering why the wire brushing before sandblasting? Is that what I should do if I ever get a sandblaster? Thank you and all the best from North Carolina!
Hey Roger! Since my old sandblaster was pretty hard to handle, i just sandblasted the corners and hard to reach spots. With a good sandblaster (like my current one) you could blast this whole thing without brushing before. Lead test has to be negative!
@@misterpatina thank you for the information! I know you are really busy but please indulge me another question. Is there specifications I should know before purchasing a sandblaster? I would like to have a decent one but not the best or most expensive. Thank you very much!!!
Awesome work, but I would have painted the lettering
Spasibo Bolshoye Brat! :-)
I know you are a genius, t'he objects have a New life!! 😍
Hey, thanks a lot! :-)
That was a grate restoration. I like the finish you acheived with the paint. It's better than new.

Thanks!

Lol i read "mister Patatina" ahaha
Ive got a similar comment, when someone read "Mister Pinata" :D
I see I new video idea. Your drill stand could use a little tlc
👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍🥃👍🥃👍🥃🥃🥃
Amazing. Keep up good work. A question: why wire brushing before sand blast? Sand removes all rust i think?
You’re definitely right. But I wanted to get rid of most of the old paint before sandblasting, otherwise all the loosened paint would be in the sandblasting cabinet 😄
For your safety, please test the red paints for lead!
If joe says so...
Thanks! 🙂
So very satisfying to see the cast marks go away, for me at least. Question, is the grease you use for pieces like this one rated food grade, and/or is that not a thing there?
Hey James, thanks for watching and thanks for your comment 🙂
The grease I used isn’t food grade, but i don’t think it’s a Problem because it doesnt „Touch“ anything. But you’re right, olive oil would’ve been a better way for greasing it :-)
I wonder how much lead was in that old paint??
I guess a lot! When sandblasting I always wear a suit and a 3 filtered mask! :-)
!!!!!!!!
Great restoration, but I think I would have left it rough I would not have filed or sanded it down, that's what made it special that's what made it unique not like something you buy off the shelf that all million of them looked the same
Your work is done to perfection, as usual. But I consider it absolutely not recommended to use this grinder for food use. You will understand for yourself that whatever paint you can apply, there will always be an interaction with the one it comes in contact with.
Is the number on the body the production year? Great job.
Thanks! No, it’s the Models Number 🙂
@@misterpatina I knew that, just joking. Merry Christmas.
@@aleksanderwojciechowski2124 oh sorry, iam getting strange questions sometimes 😄 merry Christmas! 🙂
The whole time I assumed it was a cheese grater and was waiting to see it grate the shit out of some cheese at the end. Oh well, still an awesome video. It's not your fault all I think about is cheese.
I totally feel you Frank! 😄
Subbed! FYI you are getting cheated, your videos get great views but people need to sub!
Thanks Rick! Haha, you know, iam very glad people watching my videos 🙂
Lol i would of put that file on the end of a sawsaw. Im just lazy lol
Haha :D
Very nice restoration. How long do you leave parts in the liquid when doing the nickel plating?
B from SYD Australia.
Hey B, it depends on the size of the part. With 4 Amps, I leave screws or smaller parts for around 12-15 minutes, bigger parts for around 20-25 minutes. You could do some math, but I do it how I feel for.
@@misterpatina thanks mate.
