Beaten up U.S. Army lensatic compass restoration - Restoring militaria

- I restored this old U.S. Army lensatic tritium compass, which is very worn and the lenses are so dirty and scratched it is a bit hard to see through. The magnifying glass was completely impossible to use. It is also missing the lanyard. This is a quite simple restoration and service project.
I started the project with a disassembly. I had to drill out the rivet from one of the other hinge had a spring pin which I hammered out. Other than that the whole compass was held together with 4 screws and a sort of a lock ring (I hate putting those back in by the way). This one was not an actual ring but the idea was the same.
After the disassembly I used paint stripper to remove the old paint. I thought That is probably the least abrasive method as the body is made of aluminium. Also one of the pieces had a rubber gasket and other one had delicate pieces of tritium and wire which I was not able to remove without causing any damage. Paint tripper allowed me to remove the paint without damaging those parts.
After removing the paint I put on a coat of primer and military grade paint. It has great NIR (near infra red) reflecting values. That means it will be much harder to detect with night vision. It will look the same color as leaves etc. Normal paint is usually only hard to detect in daylight but with night vision it stands out because it reflect NIR light differently.
After painting I cleaned the lenses. I thought all of them were very scratched but only the magnifying glass was scratched. I Used car polish compound and resin polish to remove the scratches and make it usable again.
After assembly I used paracord to make a new cord for it. I could have gone with something fancy with complex knots etc. but I decided to make just a simple cord, similar to what it used to have back in the day.

As a guy IN the Army who has USED one of those, I can proudly say that you restored it to better than actual Army standard. Kudos to you.
TK McMillan what a lovely comment, YAY! The world needs more TK. ❤️🇨🇦❤️
I was Navy and I can confirm that if it's falling apart and barely usable, it's in perfect "Military Grade" standards.
Definitely up to standard. Kudos
As a guy in the army I hate the phrase thank you for tryout service
Fuck auto correct
I used one of these a lot when I was in the USMC and was a forward observer for aircraft, artillery and naval gun batteries. It saved me from getting lost I dont know how many times!
Kevin Morrison excellent comment ❤️🇨🇦❤️
0861?
Them: "Soapy water"
Odd Tinkering, an intelectual: WATERY SOAP
@RoachDoggJR me too 😁
Missing ducktor though
Nice stolen comment dude 👍🏻
Soap watery
Like seriously what's the difference
8:34 Where is Mr. Ducktor ?
Gone, reduced to atoms
got his license revoked, cause he was a quack doctor xD
Came in the comments to ask the same thing
My thoughts exactly...
🐥Fighting the corrosion virus 🦠
Me: "I can change a light bulb" 🤷♂️
Haha! At least it only takes one of you to change the light bulb 😁
@@OddTinkering are you doingt all the stuff alone? where's the op camera guy?
Haha! I'm right there with you.
I'm sure you could find a tutorial on UA-cam.
Odd tinkering : replaces bulb and renovates the entire fixture.
Absolutely awesome restoration on this U.S. Army lensatic compass !!!!!!!!! I still have my Fathers Old U.S. Army lensatic compass, when he was in the Army an went to Panama in the 80's. Two thumbs way up, Sir !!!!!!!!!!!
I spent 9 years in the US Army, from 95-04. This is the compass I learned to use in basic training, and I still own one. Great video!
8:46 where is the ducktor :(
Since i started watching your content a few days ago, i refurbished my old xbox, a controller and repaired two xbox one controllers
Thank you!!!
Oh hey, I still have my army compass. I still have most of my army gear actually because it was 'Damaged or rendered inoperable during wartime deployment' so C.I.S couldn't charge me for it. Kind of my squad leader to sign off on that paper work :P
It's a shame when that happens isn't 😉😎
I actually forgot to turn my compass in, lol.
So got a good one sitting in my drawer.
My dad kept almost everything he had in the army..... all of it is in brand new/used condition but all functional... half of it is outdated gear and it would make sense if he kept that but he also has more modern stuff which when he left was not outdated or damaged to the point where it couldn't be used so i don't know why he got to keep it
Brings back lots of old memories. Thinking about finding one of these for my son now that's he's in boy scouts.
Immaculate restoration job! It looks brand new!
Great job. The OD green paint made the piece looked brand new. Thanks for the video. Stay safe.
This channel calms me down when I feel like everything is fucked.
That pen you used at 11:42 makes me feel so nostalgic. I had that same SM-Liiga pen as a kid and if I remember correctly the pen had an eraser shaped like a hockey blade at the top so the whole pen looked like an ice hockey stick.
*Great job...it turned out perfect.*
Btw Thanks UA-cam for the 5 commercials I muted/skipped. *You're destroying a ONCE great platform.*
Dan Koning At least you can skip commercials. The app won’t let me skip any.
the more I'm watching these videos, the more I understand that I'd be more satisfied not only by watching it, but DOING it MYSELF, but I'm a girl and I know nothing about it so I definitely confused what should I do with this thoughts
Being a girl has nothing to do with it.
Holy crap, that's paint stripper 3000. Check again, its 3000 TM. Drops phone in amazement.
This compass was made back int he day when the USA made stuff to LAST! I wish we could return to those manufacturing days again.
Yeah me too when we used toxic metal paint such as lead and had on kids toys. Hmm those were the days
Me too, ignore Mr. Negativity over there.
Great work. I would only recommend to assemble the actual compass insert as a last step, after all the hammering is done. Thus you won't damage the needle bearing.
i like that there is no music playing in the vid. i'm listening to lo-fi beats while watching. it's calming me done every time, i love it!
"Oh no, my _____ is yellowed and dirty!"
Odd Tinkering: *Allow me to introduce myself*
Masterfully satisfying.
We’re really bringing the Chuck Norris joke back, aren’t we?
That "you should follow the compass" thing was pure genius. 16:19
Oh, yes, this is my kind of thing
Só o Fato de Você ter olhos para Ler este Comentário Você já é um Abençoado por Deus ..
There'd a tooth paste jel that is finer than car polish that will work very well too, on lenses watch crystals and hard to remove brown bathtub stains. Its called Aim
Absolutely love your videos! Plz make more!
Ever so carefully, remove the screws with tweezers.... or.......... BOOOOM!
Nice job!
Great job, let's do well, see you all again
My dad gave me this exact same compass when he died I keep it on me all the time as a reminder
You're the best, I love your videos
Contains Tritium.
Having '120mCi 3H. Controlled Disposal Required', might have been a give away that you're not really supposed to open the case.
Paint Stripper Infinity is the ultimate upgrade.
Its suprising that thing didnt have at least a bit of rust
I LOVE your videos!
In the Soviet Union, radium was used in the manufacture of watches to illuminate hands. It seems that one in the US also practiced this.
In finland, they use paintstripper FIVE MILLION!
hope you will feature the restoration of engineer's transit surveying instrument. thank you.
When tying rope twist the left over right , then twist the right over the left , then pull hard .They will never come apart ever again
I've got one, in my hand right now, it's immaculate, have the original box and instructions too.
If that't a date on that compass then it was made in 1986, which is 34 years ago. Tritium's half life is 12 years.
Doing pretty well considering its age.
0:34 I feel like I've seen that particular compass before ... :0
2:40 bloodstain
5:44 its over 9000!!!
The dude is a badass he casualy has radioactive material
Very nice restoration! Thanks for the video. Liked & Subscribed.
_"Used by the US Army"_
compass ruler: _graded in meters_
me: _visually confused_
Yeah, it turns out military uses metrics every once in a while, mainly for scientific explorations (it turns out a system made by a group of scientists is better for science that one that was invented by an emperor. Who would had thought?)
The US Army has used the metric system for distance measurement and ranging for over fifty years.
@@TarnishUK Same with the US Navy.
3:58 bro you launched that into the stratosphere!
nice new camera angles
Do you ever research how to take things apart beforehand or are you just smart and can figure it out since you've done do many restorations? ^.^
Love your video as always. Youre so talented and it's neat seeing all your tools.
Very nice and very vintage! :].
Fun fact: there are 120 clicks in a a full rotation of the bezel ring. Each click is 3 degrees.
That is mint!
i used to have one of these, neat little thing.
Its interesting that it has meters marked on it even though the USA has never moved over to metric from imperial
I believe the military uses metric system a lot. At least in movies they often talk about "clicks" which are kilometers. But I don't really know what they use in real life, that might be just to make it sound cooler
Very satisfying video!! Also what is the wire for that’s inside the window on the cover?
it would look nice in white background
3:27 who did not feel that....
Oh that's really cool! My grandfather bought me a similar compass when I was a kid!
watery soap is back!! :D
You should name that can Optimus Primer!
I got one like this when i was younger
I didn't know how to use it
We don’t have that cool ones in the Germany Army - I want one!
Very nice...👍.
Cool ASMR
"Brass tooth brush usually used by Chuck Norris' kids." Dead. 😂😂😂👌
Where can I get this Watery Soap? I'm very intrigued by its cleaning powers!
Didnt get the bit about the black line and what you did to fix it . Can you explain that please ?
Cheers from Oz
Neil
We still use that compass and they all look that beaten up
This made me hungry
3:30 be careful dude
Looks very hurt
fellow work well. keep it up
Me again I got a few of those from Vietnam era none fully restored one still works the 2 others not syllable. Like I would
If i don't see ducktor on your next vídeo i quit My life
Well playing with the subscriber magnet haha
What is the bit adapter/screwdriver set being used in this video? It’s not the yellow one
What do you actually do with the restored items? Keep them in a display?
Does anyone else watch these with lo-fi hip hop from another video? :D
Have you ever tried powder coating some of these metal stuff? Its very resilient to chipping
So where's Spawn at?
Amazing job!
Small question: which lens did you use to record those macro shots?
I got the Ducktor's Canadian cousin for Canada Day, Justin Truduck ( a play on words name of Canadian Prime Minster, Justin Trudeau) He is red in color, has a white maple leaf tattoo on his chest and has a fondness for Tim Horton's coffee and ice hockey.
Hey gamers Halo 3 is out on PC right now.
pog
I love your videos and am curious if you would be willing to restore something for a client? Like lets say I mail it to you pay you a fee and you make it look good?
Adoration 🌍🌍🌍
Oh nice 😯
Where can I aquire some of this military grade paint?
OMG get a sand blaster I hate that method. Most restoration channels have gone to it. It's therapeutic to see it, scraping it is annoying to watch!
How old is this compass? I’m surprised to see the tritium still glowing. Doesn’t that usually last ~10 years?
It's from the 80's I don't know if they can change those since identical ones are still made. Replacement tritium is probably not something I can get hold of myself though. But it would make sense to me in the scale of US army that they would replace those
I was concerned that it might be older and have radium instead, tritium last a little longer, don't they?
Christopher yes, I think the ~10 years is far longer than the more radioactive radium which decays faster. I could be wrong though.
15:15; adding the "dummy" cord!
where can i get watery soap i can only get hold of soapy water....
3:28 ouch!
Sorry, that knot wasn't a square knot. It's Right over left then Left over right. :)
Any know what the little magnify glass, the wire sight and the scale is used for?
Magnifying glass allows you to see the degrees while you are using the wire sight. Scale is used to measure distance on a map. ua-cam.com/video/UVJVZtLmAb4/v-deo.html
What is that liquid stuff you put in the screws before you unscrew it?
Probably wd40 or some kind of penetrating oil to loosen it up.
I think Chuck Norris Kids use Dewalt.
I'm confused. If this is a US army compass, especially an old one, why the heck does it have meters as units?
While the civilian population often use the Imperial System, the Military used the Metric System to be more precise
Watch the video in 2x speed like me lf u enjoy it!!!!!@@@@
