Old Rusted Drill Vise - Tool Restoration | Mister Patina
In this Video i‘m restoring an old drill Vise - i found this drill vise in my grandfathers basement, he used it for working with wood and other materials.
I started with a full functional inspection of the drill vise. The threads were mostly in a good condition, the clamps werent hardened but very used. After the disassembly i smoothed all the surfaces and other marks by filing and sanding. The body got two coats of primer and "Hammerite" spraypaint, the screws and the handle were blued with acid bluing. The clamps got fire blued: i heated the clamps to ~300 degrees celsius and put them into warm olive oil. This process hardens the clamps, makes them rustproof and gives them a nice anthracite finish. While assembly, i put the parts back together with a lot of grease. The final check shows: it works perfectly fine and looks nearly brand new :)
I will use this drill vise in my upcoming Videos - so stay tuned and enjoy, i really hope you like it.
If you have any questions or suggestions, you can write an email, i try to answer asap.

Some interesting special effects used in this one... :-)
Everyone's always removing sharp edges, not realizing those were an intentional feature of old stuff meant to cull the weak.
Beatiful 👍🏼💯💯
Aaaaand with this one, I've finally watched every single Mr Patina video, from newest to oldest! Thank you for providing content for my insomniac night!
Cheers!
Haha, thank you so much man! I really appreciate! New video coming on Sunday 🥳
âu quá rồi mới nghe anh Đức Phúc hát, thích quá đi thôi.
Beautiful overall restoration, i really enjoyed all the time you put into file work. Alot of people don't bother going to that trouble so i really appreciate it when someone does.
Thank you so much! First i thought about fillering, but on „real“ tools i dont really like it. Filing took me about 8 hours on this little buddy, i really appreciate that you saw how much work it is! Thanks for your comments! 🙂
Thumbs up for using proper punches. It is so simple tool, yet people use whatnot crazy instead of one.
Absolutely first class work, very enjoyable to watch.
The filing and sanding must have taken a very long time.
Job well done. The color was perfect. Amazing how well the Hammerite paint works. Very good choice. Thanks again for the videos.
Excellent job!!👍
Thanks Michelle!
Even more thumbs up for fixing all the casting marks and dings from use. Carefully, with files, and then sanding. That is where you can separate the true masters, from the backyard butchers.
An excellent result, and with no recourse to chemical agents, & only the minimum use of power tools. An 'eco-warrior', as well as a skilled craftsman. Thank you for sharing !
Loved the filing time lapse. Even more satisfying than sandblasting! Wish you would do them again!
Antik?
Super paint stripper, best sanding.
A clean workmanship.
Wow! I never would have believed it was the same wrench, had I not watched! Great job!
Thanks Randy!
hammered finish. beautiful!
Thank you josh! 🙂
Very nice work Mr. P....
Thanks Gary!
Excelente 👏👏👏
I'm glad you took the time to sand it more. Well done Mr Patina well done. A remarkable finish. 😉👍
Thanks Shaun!
Fantastic job looks great thanks for sharing your time and skill and remember#stay safe and make 🍺🍺👍👍
Thanks Brian! 🙂👍
Wow ! This is very nice. Thank you for Sharing. Stay safe with all this wild times now days.
Thanks Texas! You too! 🙂
Love the finish on it.
Thanks William!
Very nice work. I really like your editing and the fact that you don’t have music playing. I like to hear the actual sound of the work being done. I’ve subscribed and am enjoying your labor of love.
Thank you very much Zube! 🙂
Amazing restoration and beautiful color and i love you men
I like it when you put vise on a vise 🙂🙂
Viseception 😄
Perfect.
Thanks!
Nice restoration friend, you should be in the Vise Squad LOL, have a nice day & Stay Safe !!! .
There is only one word to describe your work - superb.
Thanks John! :-)
This thing looks sooo solid. And, ya gotta love the shine made from the rotating wire brush.
Best thing about this project: it was my first on UA-cam, and Iam still using it until today 🙂
Wow awesome work
marvin zineker thanks! :)
Meisterwerk 🥰
Very nice. Keep up the great work you are doing and showing. 👍
Awesome how that came out in the end.
Thanks! 🙂
Love the attention to details and the time put into breathing new life into an old tool. 👌
Thank you so much! :-)
amazing content
MisterTracks thank you! :)
1st Vise
As usual, very nice final result!!!
Thanks Florin! :-)
The restoration far exceeds the original manufacture! 👏👍🏼
Thanks Mike! 🙂👍
I think “restoration” is inaccurate. This is like Concours for machine vices. Lovely result!
Thanks Dave!
👍😉Nice
Thanks! :-)
I don't think you got either of those clamps hot enough to actually harden them. I think you needed to be up over 1300 F (around 750 C)
Wesley Mckenzie thanks for your comment! Yes, they could have been a little hotter, but important for me was the rustproofing/finish. I keep your words in mind for the next projects, hope my little burner will do it 😉
Or you could try this “Magnetism: Remember that, at the critical temperature, when the phase change to austenite begins, the steel will become non-magnetic.”
This steel probably couldn't be hardened anyway. Like why would these parts be made of tool steel?
Otherwise a great video. Love the finished result and especially the filework!
Spasibo Bolshoye!
Just like new again, great.
Thanks Velo!
Man your attention to detail is superb. Beautiful restoration!
Thanks James! I really appreciate!
Very nicely done. That grey paint looks great and it certainly looked better than a new one
So hard to find one of these that has no drill holes in the rails and jaws.
Impressive filing.
Thanks!
Good as new great job!!
Hey Bori, thanks! You can see this drill vise in nearly every other video 🙂✌️
Love your work .... on the champers notice chatter marks next time clamp for smooth clean champers . great work!
Thanks!
It made me very happy to see you filing off all the cast marks, just because I dislike cast as an aesthetic. Lovely finished piece. Some body filler might do well for spots where it's too deep to file out, if you want to be really finicky about it. Mr. Beer sent me. Subbed!
Hey James, thanks a lot! I thought about using body filler, but since I wanted to really use this Tool, I didn’t.
Dr. Beer? Mister Patina? You, sir, are a man of culture and pretty good taste 😉
Thanks again and welcome 🙂
Thanks
Hey Tom, thank you SO much! :-)
I think I have watched everyone you have done and enjoyed them very much. Have you done a workshop video with all your stuff, if you haven't I am sure it would be a great hit. Take care and stay safe sir. Tom.
Nicely done.
Thanks! :-)
While I agree the final result looks good, it hardly needed restoration in the first place. And your name of Mister Patina is lost on me…as the patina that was there has now been lost forever. As I said though, the final result looks good .
Magnifique ! 👏
Thanks Pierre! 🙂
Great job!
Thanks!
Those hand chamfered holes sure got chowdered up.
Nice job!
Thanks Shawna!
Better than new.
Thanks David!
Since it's not broken, you really should fix it.
Complimenti bel video
👌🎨👍😁
🙂👍
That was absolutely fantastic sir. How long did that take? If you don't mind me asking. Take care and stay safe. Tom.
Thanks! It took around 2-3 weeks, always a few relaxed hours in the evening...:-)
The same for you! :-)
you should get a sandblaster! super easy to remove old paint and rust. But great job as always
Thanks a lot! I got a sandblaster now, you can see it in my other videos. I also got a lathe, if you like lathe videos 🙂
nice job!
Thanks!
Great work, i love the filling part the most.
M T thanks :-)
👨🔧👍
Hard graft! Don't you just hate it when the glove tears and the filing gets under your nails...
Turned out great, nothing like a little bastard file work out either. Nice job bro.
There’s nothing better than a well filed surface. Thanks! 🙂
"Drill my dear, please be gentle."
👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍🥃🥃🥃
Be carefull, the cold bluing liquid must be on a glass not on plastic plate... Nice job
Oh ok thanks Bro!
Those 4-flute chamfering bits are an awful design. Spend a few extra bucks and go the 6-flute "chatter-less" bits on Amazon. Smooth as a shit sandwich.
The final result looks incredible though. Terrific job!
Thanks for the information! I always struggle with those bits, I’ll get the 6-flute! Thank you!
Thanks for that comment. Will be trying a six flute too.
Amazing work, how often you test the paint to make sure you’re not grinding on lead based paints?
Thanks! To be honest, on this project i didnt test it, but i did on later ones. But iam always wearing my PPE.
That type of countersink bits are only good for soft materials and low speeds. I just stopped using then. I use the other type with a hole don't know the name of.
Youre right, theyre not the best. Ill buy some 4 "bladed" now.
Hi great video was just wandering what do you with the finished article. Thanks
If you should watch my other videos, you’d know 🙂
Edit: iam using this drill vise for my other Restoration projects
Hammerite is sexy, sexy paint! A+ !
What brush did you use as the “paint killer”? Great video as always!
That’s a CSD disc 🙂
@@misterpatina thanks, I’ll add it to my shop buying list.
This wasn't a "restoration" so much as it was a "make it pretty."
Ok so we have "I make a new one" then the "Ducktor" now what's the gimmick of this fella?
Courier New 10 point.
This vice is not old, neglected yes but not old
You’re right, it’s a vise
Are you located in Germany ?
Yes sir.
What a waste of virgin olive oil
Gutes Video.
Danke für den Tipp Micha!
@@misterpatina Ja Senken 🧐🤪. Ich mag deine Videos
Haha, hat sich aber witzig gelesen. Vielen Dank!
10:10 For pity's sake, sharpen that poor deburring bud! :(
To be honest - it was brandnew.
The problem: it just got 3 blades, which causes some sort of frequency which causes a bad cut. Iam using a 4 bladed now, much better 🙂
I absolutely hate when people drag a file backwards. Nothing will destroy it quicker.
