The defense atrorney is just doing the best job she can with what she has to work with. It's hard to listen to but you want everyone to have a compentent defense. If a person doesn't get a competent defense then they have a case for appeal. I'd bet that attorney tried like crazy to her to take the plea deal knowing this was an undefenseable act she would have to try to defend.

The way she went about texting her step dad from her moms phone after shooting her essentially urging him to come home shows she knew exactly what she was doing and also proves she had the intention to commit the act and was thinking ahead. Premeditated. Period.

I agree. And they should be identified as well and applications for suppression orders should be denied. Sadly here in Australia, even if a child (under 18) commits a very serious crime, their identity is kept secret, which is ridiculous. They commit adult crimes, they should be punished and treated like adult offenders. None of this bullshit, oh they’re still young and should be given a chance to be rehabilitated and guided in the right direction. No, they’re old enough to know what they did was wrong, yet still choose to commit crimes, so they should do the time and be named and shamed.

The stepdad's 911 call was so heartbreaking. You can really tell how utterly devastated he is. And as another comment said, Carly crying over hearing that call kinda irked me for some reason. But more like "Oh no, who knew killing your mother would have permanent consequences?" Either way, RIP Ashley.

He even calls her "daughter" during the call, not step-daughter. I can't believe that Tiktok's discourse is that he was involved somehow or he was sexually abusing her and that triggered Carly to kill her mom. Do they really believe that her lawyers wouldn't have brought that up if that was the case? Or that the police didn't check Carly's phone? She would have told someone or said it somewhere if that was the case, especially if she was so over the edge that she was willing to kill her mom, IMO.

I thought it was kind of nice seeing her respond to the consequences of her actions on other people. Ideally, they would make her listen to it every night before bed so she could cry herself to sleep. Even if we assume the worse, people still grow emotionally. Especially young people. It's been a year and a half since she did it and she is in her formative years. It is inevitable that she would mature emotionally during that year and a half. But yaknow, it's a comment section, so we're just supposed to shame her and pat ourselves on the back for being better than her. 🙄

Why is no one talking about the mother? She seemed to be mentally ill as well. Ashley was so paranoid that her ex-might come over and kill her that she kept a loaded gun beside her bed. That reeks of mental illness. Was she getting treatment? Probably not. It also sends a message to others that gun violence is justified. Imagine your own mother making preparations to kill your father. How would that affect you if you were just a teen?

    • @Ipetam
      @Ipetam Місяць тому

@theeclectic2919 You make it sound like Ashley was planning a murder... Plenty of women are terrified of their exes. I don't necessarily think she was paranoid in a pathological way. She was scared of him and kept a gun for self-defense. The only thing she did wrong was keeping it in the manner she did. Zero gun safety.

My mum had a stroke last week. I don't say this to garner sympathy, - My mum is doing really well (at the moment). But there was a few days where I had to face the sobering reality that Mum might be gone, and I would never have her support or understanding ever again. To see her gradually re-emerge from pain, fear and confusion has been one of the most uplifting and hopeful things I will ever experience, but makes this case all the more confusing to me. One day I will lose the woman who is possibly the only person who truly understands me, a woman who will stand by me and advocate for me, no matter how much I may mess up. Our past hasn't been smooth sailing, there have been times I have been so angry with her I haven't been able to contain it. But I would never do anything to hurt her. I cannot understand this girl. I am sorry for your mental health, and being sexually abused. I congratulate you on your perseverance in life. I was physically abused as a child (My dad would whip me so hard with a belt that my little buttocks and sometimes my stomach would bleed...Mom would later start stepping in to protect me...I grew up in a religious household and I am grateful, and I agree with spanking but not whipping a child so hard while he was angry...I had very bad ADHD and us being poor farmers my Daddy didn't understand the disorder...He DID LOVE me, but he never whipped my sister and my little brother was rarely whipped and that was usually by Mom who would do it so Daddy wouldn't) so my Dad inadvertently gave me High anxiety or PTSD from the beatings and the hard farm work that I ONLY had to do...like making me climb up into Tobacco Barns at around12 or 13, these barns housed tobacco and you had to stand and balance yourself between to beams, only 2 to 3 or 4 inches wide. I then would have to take my hands of the rails/beams and pull up tobacco on sticks and lay them across where my feet were and the beams near my head. These railings could go as high as approximately 17 feet high. I got good at it quickly. I would later start having trouble in school and would pass out...the funny thing was it could be positive energy like when I got my first kiss, and the little girl (I was in 5th grade and she was in 4th grade) stuck her tongue in my mouth (LOLOL yes my friends still won't let this go)...I dropped like a sack of taters. Other times I would be Bullied or get in trouble due to my ADHD (remember I wasn't on medicine) and I would pass out. Like you, I persevered and but abused alcohol in college (I used it to be able to ask girls out in college). I was pulled out of college by my dad, and I joined the Army/ARNG. I graduated all my classes in medical school and became a Combat Medic (God really helped me during Boot Camp...I never had a panic attack/passed out. I then went back to EKU University in KY and graduated as a Rec Therapist under a BS in Health and Sciences and later earned titles of Mental and Behavorial Specialist. I worked with initially SVP's Sexually Violent Predators for the state of California (I performed stand-up and was in 2 movies ...I'll leave this part out...I hate texting and typing, but I have written a short story comedy, and it was put into a screen play format, and I wrote and illustrated a children's book) at the Infamous Atascadero Maximum State Mental Hospital. Later on, I worked in Anchorage, AK. at North Star Childrens Behavior problem Center (they lived here). Now I am a broken physically from back disorders, injuries, fighting for real and some MMA, over 12 surgeries with 9 being attributed to my spine. I can't work at the present time even though they pay here $80K. I still love video games and a more than a couple years back finally proved that I had severe anxiety disorder (not hypoglycemia like they told me as a kid) and that I have one of the worst cases of ADHD that my Doc said he's seen in 30 years. So, I take a few pills and several natural/supplement medications. Also, several years ago I became a Christian and before that I was just blind, awful Temper, and drank too much. I am now trying to get my pain taken a way or reduced...don't look good for me going back to my previous lifestyle and helping others while getting paid well (lifestyle without the Temper and Alcohol). So here I am and not ashamed. Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus? Anyway, feel free to reply or not. Sorry typing so much and God Bless. Ajax

I have a very unpopular opinion to share; I don’t expect anyone to agree but I do think it’s important.
I’ve raised a child with a severe mental illness with psychotic features. That child is now thirty and thriving, with a masters degree and having served in the Peace Corps. There were many many times during their life where that future was not secure. Watching this story unfold was like watching an alternate reality in which my child could have been Carly. I was fortunate to have my child diagnosed very early and to have gotten excellent care particularly at the beginning, and very lucky in that my child was not at all interested in drugs or alcohol. It was not easy and there is no way to describe how difficult it was at times. I think it’s easy to dismiss a child like this as evil, and I understand the sentiment but I don’t think it’s that simple. If we as a society can’t recognize a child with a mental illness as having the potential to be rehabilitated, I’m not sure what the justice system is really for. Again, I respect that I’m in the vast minority on this, and I don’t want to dismiss the very valid feelings and opinions that differ from my own. I just wanted to give a glimpse into a world that most parents never see.

    • @M.ds87

You may be in the minority, but you are correct.
People are emotional creatures, and the majority is unable to put that aside in order to make progress - and some are fully aware of it and abuse the fact for their own selfish desires or agenda.
You're absolutely correct though, and we all could do with a little more empathy and understanding for our fellow people.
The human condition is something we are all suffering from.

And that’s great for you & your child. This girl doesn’t have a mental illness. She’s completely void of empathy & compassion. The vast majority of monsters are made through years of abuse & or neglect and then there are the rare few that are simply born that way for whatever reason!
It’s not easy or comfortable labeling a kid as evil. I don’t know where you’d get that idea… This has been debated for some time and it’s not taken lightly on either side. It’s commonly referred to as the Bad Seed Theory. And there’s a split down the medical community about its validity.
You’re either born with empathy & compassion or you’re not. It can’t be taught.
Your parents can tell you why you should feel bad or guilty for hurting someone but they can’t make you feel it.
Ted Bundy was an adorable little boy once too! And he more than likely committed his first murder at 12! How about Aaron Campbell from Scotland? He r@ped & murdered 6yo Alisha Mcphail! He was 15!
Carson Peters-Berger, he was 14 when he r@ped & murdered his cousin 10yo Lily Peters! Josh Philips 14, who murdered his neighbor Maddy Clifton, 8yo!

Question is how will she be able to live with that for the rest of her life. Will she be able to forgive herself in time? Nobody knows, not even Carly. Why was there a loaded gun laying around the house when they knew she was having problems. Didn`t they think that maybe she was considering suicide knowing she had been hurting herself. idk, if you look at the earlier pictures of her compared to around the time of the crime she definitely had gone weird. to me it doesn't seem so much like manic depression as her being what's called 'prodromal' for schizophrenia, which is hard to catch and is often mistaken for depression, it's like a phase before someone becomes fully schizophrenic. perhaps, like she said in her diary, she really had just had her first psychotic break before this. but to me i think maybe that was more causing stress that triggered the crime, rather than her being actually confused at the time. but like the defence lawyer said, sometimes it's hard to tell, sometimes people can seem rational but reacting to weird thoughts and perceptions.
another element of the prodrome of schizophrenia (and the full blown condition), is they can sort of stop fully understanding that other people are 'real' as they lose grips with reality in general, they often actually write stuff like she was writing about things being meaningless, because their brains aren't properly assigning meaning, then under full blown schizophrenia they have like spurts of meaning which makes like random things seem super important, that's what leads to the disordered thoughts and paranoia, in part. i would be interested in seeing what her school friends say, if she had bouts of disassociation where she was just starring off into space or had started talking about weird things that didn't make sense.
just my thoughts tho, no expert.

      America needs help!
Nowhere else are guns such a "normal" thing in a household.
And here in this case, these parents should also shoulder the burden, by keeping a gun so nonchalant, open to a depressed child who has showed violent behavior.
This is also the case of kids doing school shootings, they have open access to weapons.
Even the american police are so trigger happy.
I live in South Africa , where though it is said crime is high....BUT
Most of the population, don't know how to use a gun, haven't held or seen a real one.
And that is a absolutely great thing.

Don't get me wrong, she deserves the lw/o sentence and have her face shown to everyone, but I remember when they overturned the whole not sentencing a minor to lw/o. I haven't had my morning caffeine yet so I apologize if this came out as word salad. Lol

The judge mentioned some supreme court cases but wasn`t able to make a ruling on them. It would have to be done at higher court. So there will be another trial about the sentencing phase of the trial. The trial will have nothing to do with guilt as when you plead insanity you are pleading guilty.

The Defence might have been aiming for the sweet innocent Catholic School Girl look. But she wound up looking like the chick from that horror movie “The Orphan”.
It’s not unusual for a teenager to take permanent/drastic action to solve a temporary issue. But the extent of this particular action, is so damned tragic.
The abundance of calculated thought, planning, strategic action & evasive manoeuvres taken by Carly on that day was overwhelming. She may not have been mentally “well” but she knew exactly what she was doing. What a waste
