Helpful! I am buying a Model S in this week and the sunroof is extremely slow. I am thinking of just unplugging the motor and never using it so it never gets accidentally partway open and stuck.

Hey InternetDude. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'm hearing quite a few stories of them having sunroof issues. My only concern on your method of avoiding the problem, is the car computer constantly seeing that it is unplugged. I'm not positive, but there might be a way of just lock it and nonop it in the computer. You might look at it hat before going through the trouble. Thanks again. - Sponge

@@spongestechtips-xu1xg there is one way to find out LOL - I realized that I probably only need to unplug one of the motors, since one is probably for opening and one is for closing. If I disconnect the motor that does the opening I could look in service mode to see if there are any alerts. If there is I can just plug it back in.

Hi. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. As I've mentioned in other responses, I haven't had to get too in depth with these roofs yet. For the most part, they've been surprisingly well operable. In regards to your question, I don't know for sure, but I suspect that both motors assist in both operations. I suspect they are just separated by left and right drives. I suspect that the track that they are in dictates the positions of the glass.... Up, down, open and closed. As I am tasked with deeper repairs, I'll for sure get more videos and tech tips uploaded. If you learn anything more, before I do, be sure to get back in here and let the other owners, and me know. Thanks again. - Sponge

@@spongestechtips-xu1xg cool thanks for info. My car has problems opening but not closing. If I’m moving at a fast speed or accelerating I can open otherwise it just vents when I try to open.

Thank you for your video:) My sunroof shows that is not fully closed on the screen, but it actually is closed on the outside. When i try to open and lose it, it just makes a cracking noice and nothing happens. Do you know what the issue may be?

Hi. Thanks so much for your question. Unfortunately, without being there, and troubleshooting it in person, it's very difficult to really conclude what your issue is. The best I can do is guess. You say it makes a cracking noise. I have not encountered what I'd consider a cracking noise. If it's making a reoccurring popping noise, and if it's coming from the areas where I showed the motors to be, you most likely have a jammed mechanism or cable, and the gears of the motor might be skipping across the teeth. Not sure if that is what you're dealing with, but it's a guess. Maybe that helps. Thanks for watching. - Sponge

You can try recalibrating the sunroof. Go into the service menu.

Hi. Thanks so much for your comment/request. So far, I have not been tasked with a full service of a Tesla roof. I've watched as we've had to have Tesla come in and replace multiple main battery systems, but not much in the way of sunroofs. To be quite honest, I'm quite impressed with the amount of Tesla's that have crossed through my clients facility, and the majority of them have the roofs operating properly. As soon as I can tear into one completely, I'll be sure to get a video. It's bound to happen eventually, so, if you haven't already, please subscribe to be notified when I do. Thanks for watching. - Sponge
