      Tesla's are no known for their reliability, and Tesla is known for not being very friendly to owners who are out of warranty. I will buy an EV (probably a model S), but it will be a lease and I will get rid of it before the warranty ends.

Maybe they need something like Microsoft's Hardware Certification Lab but in reverse - a way for modders to submit software mods to the full system regression testing that the manufacturer does. It's another entirely to demand they do it. Obviously, with EVs, this will become a much larger issue because the average person is even less qualified to work on these than ICE cars.

      Yes, but the mechanic's shop is also full of trained Monkeys that have no idea what their doing in regards to spark plugs. All they know is "engine no work, add new engine."
      Truth is, most mechanics and technicians are just not trained to deal with batteries, and most dealers aren't going to spend the money to buy the necessary equipment and train them when they make more money just selling new batteries, and get a massive tax write off (In some states) for sending the old batteries back to the manufacture to be recycled.
      Tesla was smart. The only way electric cars and namely batteries can be handled properly is when you cut out the middle man. As long as dealerships are a thing, until the manufactures or the government or both put a gun to their head, they aren't going to handle this right. And even once they do. look at what happened to Cadillac. Dealerships left, right, and center dropped them like a rock in the ocean once they heard about their electrification plans...

    • @AndrewAMartin
      @AndrewAMartin 3 роки тому

      @@TheSteinbitt I would bet it's more about the time to replace the whole pack vs. finding and replacing an individual cell or ten or whatever. Replacing the whole pack gets the customer back on the road faster, and the bad pack can then go through diagnostics and either be fixed or used as parts for other packs. We don't have any insight into what happens to the bad packs that Tesla replaces, but I'm pretty sure they're not just dumping them...

      All the best to Rossmann and the right to repair movement. I've supported him and its movement for ages. BUT guess what guys, there's a HUGE difference between a circuit board and a Tesla HV battery pack. The reason Tesla "wouldn't wan't that" is because the high risk of some future "authorised" unofficial Tesla SC unsuccessfully replacing a Tesla battery pack. Therefore they are unable to escalate the the service visit internally to investigate what went wrong and how to prevent this from happening. It's not about making a few extra bucks for Tesla. It's regards to the safety for the customer the safety for the company. Just the logistics behind a battery replacement, e.g load, ship and store a Tesla HV battery pack requires immense and specific knowledge. And it requires proper consequences if something goes wrong or isn't done properly. People can be seriously injured, or even worse, thus allowing the risk of external companies dealing with this isn't for the best for anyone, except greedy customers and workshops.

They want to change the whole thing, send the old one back to the manufacturer and know that the repair is at least warranteeable for some period of time. What happens if they do the $1000 repair and then 5 months later something else happens? You'd be pissed, that's what would happen.

      The study found that some of the CO2 savings made during the use of low carbon vehicles is offset by increased emissions created during their production, and to a lesser extent disposal.
      However, overall electric and hybrid vehicles still have lower carbon footprints than normal
      cars.
      For example, a typical medium sized family car will create around 24 tonnes of CO2 during its life cycle, while an electric vehicle (EV) will produce around 18 tonnes over its life. For a battery EV, 46% of its total carbon footprint is generated at the factory, before it has travelled a single mile."

      @redbaron6805 3 роки тому

      @@Rover200Power "One of the questions I’m most frequently asked about electric vehicles (EV) is: “Are they really a cleaner option?” While it’s obvious that a fully-electric vehicle eliminates tailpipe emissions, people often wonder about the global warming emissions from generating the electricity to charge an EV. The latest data affirms that driving on electricity produces significantly fewer emissions than using gasoline and is getting better over time.
      Electricity power plant emissions data for 2018 has just been released and we’ve crunched the latest numbers. Based on where EVs have been sold, driving the average EV produces global warming pollution equal to a gasoline vehicle that gets 88 miles per gallon (mpg) fuel economy. That’s significantly better than the most efficient gasoline car (58 mpg) and far cleaner than the average new gasoline car (31 mpg) or truck (21 mpg) sold in the US. And our estimate for EV emissions is almost 10 percent lower than our previous estimate two years ago. Now 94 percent of people in the US live where driving an EV produces less emissions than using a 50 mpg gasoline car.
      To compare the climate-changing emissions from electric vehicles to gasoline-powered cars, we analyzed all the emissions from fueling and driving both types of vehicles. For a gasoline car, that means looking at emissions from extracting crude oil from the ground, moving the oil to a refinery, making gasoline and transporting gasoline to filling stations, in addition to combustion emissions from the tailpipe.
      For electric vehicles, the calculation includes both power plant emissions and emissions from the production of coal, natural gas and other fuels power plants use. Our analysis relies on emissions estimates for gasoline and fuels production from Argonne National Laboratory (using the GREET2019 model) and power plant emissions data released by the US EPA. The data, released in January 2020, tallied the emissions from US power plants during 2018.
      When looking at all these factors, driving the average EV is responsible for fewer global warming emissions than the average new gasoline car everywhere in the US. In some parts of the country, driving the average new gasoline car will produce 4 to 7 times the emissions of the average EV. For example, the average EV driven in upstate New York has emissions equal to a (hypothetical) 231 mpg gasoline car. And in California, a gasoline car would need to get 122 mpg to have emissions as low as the average EV."
      You were saying...????

    • @redbaron6805
      @redbaron6805 3 роки тому

      @@Rover200Power "But what are the global warming emissions of electric cars on a life cycle basis-from the manufacturing of the vehicle’s body and battery to its ultimate disposal and reuse? To answer this, the Union of Concerned Scientists undertook a comprehensive, two-year review of the climate emissions from vehicle production, operation, and disposal. We found that battery electric cars generate half the emissions of the average comparable gasoline car, even when pollution from battery manufacturing is accounted for.
      All vehicles experience three distinct life stages: manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life. Each stage is linked with carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions-but those emissions differ between gas-powered cars and electric cars.
      Both types of vehicle begin in much the same way. Raw materials are extracted, refined, transported, and manufactured into various components that are assembled into the car itself. Because electric cars store power in large lithium-ion batteries, which are particularly material- and energy-intensive to produce, their global warming emissions at this early stage usually exceed those of conventional vehicles. Manufacturing a mid-sized EV with an 84-mile range results in about 15 percent more emissions than manufacturing an equivalent gasoline vehicle. For larger, longer-range EVs that travel more than 250 miles per charge, the manufacturing emissions can be as much as 68 percent higher.
      These differences change as soon as the cars are driven. EVs are powered by electricity, which is generally a cleaner energy source than gasoline. BATTERY ELECTRIC CARS MAKE UP FOR THEIR HIGHER MANUFACTURING EMISSIONS WITHIN EIGHTEEN MONTHS OF DRIVING -shorter range models can offset the extra emissions within 6 months-and continue to outperform gasoline cars until the end of their lives."
      So.... electric cars offset their manufacturing emissions in 18 months.... You were saying...??????

      No they're gonna save the earth!, we just have to mine battery's for all the cars and change them every 10 years, totalling the car. You stupid people with your gas burning cars. Ill stick to the eco friendly battery muncher. My coal PowerPlant and battery replacements and planned obsolescence are much better for the environment obviously 🙄.

      @@tiepup I did watch the video, small indie shops are figuring out referbs and work around. In the video he says tesla is throwing battery's in them even if they don't need them. So yes the industry around these cars are still very wasteful and inefficient.

      Not even taking into account that these cars need electricity to work. Most of which is still fossil fuel run. Truthfully it doesn't seem like it's doing much good for the enviroment.

    I had a 2011 Prius (Hybrid and not a plug-in) and in 2024, when I totaled it, the Big battery was still charging (from the engine and braking system) up up 80% all the time (the car then had 205,000 miles). The battery, if Toyota needed to replace it, was about $5000 but luckily I never needed to do that. Also, there were 3rd party batteries (refurbished) for a lot less than that. Some as low as $1500. Hertz car rental bought a ton of Tesla's but it was a bad business decision and they are selling them all pretty cheap to the public.
