Thanks a lot Mark for sharing and happy anniversary! I'm 44 yo and started surfskating 2 month ago because of you and your videos. I love it and I love that it is a really progressive sport in its learning curve. It makes the experience so satisfying and enjoyable.
Am I officially an influencer now that I influenced one person? Really happy to hear that you found something you are enjoying - It is so important especially in this past pandemic year. Thanks for watching!
Yesterday I bought a skateboard for my daughter...actualy I wanted to buy one for me too...but seeing the clip, and your reaction, now I think why not.
Kudos to u for starting at 61, I started last Nov at 59 & thought I was the most senior 🤔 Had my fair share of injuries but like they say, no pain no gain. Very comfortable with carving & sliding. Just started last week on a pump track to aim for pumping/snaps on bowls
Same same. Spending just 10 minutes couple time a week working on speed generation and getting my turns in. Then injured my Achilles’ tendon . :-( I’m 64 and trying to improve my surfing. And it’s working
I’ve watched this video so many times since I’ve gotten my board. Carving in a bowl on a surf skate is one of the most satisfying feelings ever. I’ve also had a lot of fun carving down a soap box durby hill learning speed checks and carving sharp turns while going fast on a pump track. I genuinely enjoy surf skating far more than regular. It’s so unique and feels graceful compared to how gnarly regular skating can be. To each their own!
Amazing video & advancement! Congrats, killing it! I'm 66, 3 weeks in on my first ever skateboard! I surf & surf skating has had a positive effect on my surfing, mainly because concrete is so much more scary than saltwater & sand! Already a subscriber, keep the content coming!! :)
Thanks, I really appreciate the support! I have a real surf trip planned for the end of the year, hopefully the first one in 2 years that doesn't have to be cancelled - Can't wait to see how all this practice translates in the ocean rather than the lake or river.
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer The actual riding will be quite similar, but reading the waves & catching them is the hard part! But, if you go somewhere where the surf is good, it makes it heaps easier! :)
Congratulations you beat me. I begin octobre 2020 at 65 years old. I lost 50 years of my Life not begin at 15 years old. Never too late. Guy sirois Canada
66 and got my first skateboard (surfskate) 2 months ago. Got it mostly to land train for surfing but once I saw a bowl I knew I had to carve it. Hope my knees hold up!!
@@daneroberts3738 it's a such funny tendency) my neighborhood is 58 and had four skateboard - arbor, carver, yow and he is very happy about it) I'll brought my first surf skate at 35))
Hey man I m actually on my first month of surfskate , I m 39 , and I came across your videos because I bought the carve bird oxelo You re really inspiring , thx for sharing those videos
Really appreciate that Andy, I am honestly surprised at how far I’ve come in this past year - It is kind of like snowboarding, it can be slow to figure things out to begin with, but you reach a point where things click and the learning becomes exponential. Enjoy your surfskate journey!
Lol. I'm 39 too. Got my board before Christmas last year, fell on my elbow at a skate park doing a simple back side turn on flat ground and that kept me off the board for about two months. Luckily I had a helmet. Before going back out, I invested in elbow and knee pads and wrist guards and gloves (should've had those from the start). It's amazing how wearing body armor increased my confidence to generate speed and lean into turns. I've surfed since I was 21, but never been any good at generating speed and power on a small wave with a short board. But surfskate really helps me imagine what that might feel like. Thanks Mark for your inspiration. Keep it up Andy. It's such a rewarding form of daily exercise for us "older" guys. Excites me to still be surfing at age 60. Haha
@@yuuu2ooob891 You’ll notice I am fully padded for most of my skatepark sessions, because I have learned lessons along the way every time I don’t! It lets me push myself that little bit harder and prevents me from missing time on the board.
I started surfskating two yesrs and half ago when I was 49 , I turn 51 last august and I'm keep going and keep having fun. Thank you so much for your videos, they are always helpful and inspirational
It's great to read so many comments on "mature" riders that are discovering this great sport. I am turning 40 next month and have just started with bowl riding with my Yow Pipe with the Meraki truck. This video is awesome to set up my next goals.
I heard about YOW and Meraki being really good.. except they are impossible to find. Can you fit the Meraki trucks to a standard longboard, or is it better to have smaller dimensions?
@@ColindeSilva Hi Colin, the Yow Meraki System is fantastic and I have noticed a faster progress and confidence with the Yow than with my previous Miller surfskate. I bought my Yow on their official website and right now they have a few models available, although their most popular models are out of stock. I started to follow their Instagram account to be aware of their new stock. In regards to your question, you can of course mount the Meraki truck on a longboard (I have done so myself in the past with their previous truck), but a shorter wheelbase gives you more radical turning radius. In my opinion this agility is much more fun. Hope my comment helps.
Thank you for this video, it is truly inspirational. I'm 38 years old and I street skated a lot when I was a teenager, now I felt back in love with it and started longboarding, and it's great to see people going through similar experiences and overcoming similar struggles.
Hey man, my story is nearly identical to yours, except I just started. The fact that you integrated normal skate tricks in your runs is super inspiring. Thanks for posting! And keep carving!
Congratulations on your progress & Another great vid , old guy here (51), used to street skate in my teens & twenties got back into skating (longboard) during lockdown last year.recently I was looking for a smaller board &/or something new & discovered the Decathlon board via your vids , so I bought it and so far I’m loving it !! Keep skating!!
Before this I was playing soccer 3 nights a week, when that came to a grinding halt due to Covid and shutdowns, I needed something to replace that really important stress relief. Something that like soccer that would be physically exerting, challenging, and which benefits from creativity and strategic thinking. The interesting thing is that you don’t have to read any opponents, just have to overcome your own limits and hurdles. Discovering SurfSkating is definitely the silver lining out of the challenges over the past 15 months.
That’s really awesome stuff. I’m 42 and was about to do the same stuff like you, but then suffered a broken ankle earlier this year which still makes it tough to come back. Now there comes the winter without any skate options close to here. You lucky guy:) integration of a boneless to your repertoire would be crazy, think about it bro and go on, it’s fun to watch. Stay healthy!!!
Boneless and Boneless 180s are regular part of this year’s tricks, trying to figure out boneless 3’s but having trouble getting enough air time to get it back under. Very soon, my movie “Unconventional.” will be dropping that will hopefully really inspire how limitless the playground can be with a surfskate! There is a preview up on my channel as I await sorting out some copyright issues with the music. Heal up quick and get back out there.
Glass half full outlook - I like it! I wish I could have discovered this when I was 14 but better than discovering it when I am 70! If nothing else, it is keeping me in shape so that surfing everyday in retirement stays a realistic goal. Although I am typing this one handed after trying to grind down a staircase ledge yesterday and spraining my wrist... maybe the health and injury neutralize each other.
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer That's so true. The trick is never think about your age when you are out there surfing waves, concrete or bombing the snow slope. The only thing that's should be in all our minds is.. "Its gonna be a good day". There's no room for word try, that don't exist out there. You only get two options, Do or Do not. I dig all your videos so keep it up and Cheers to your one year Anniversary!
Cheers Mark... Thinking of starting this too at 45... Last time I was on a skateboard was 35 year ago so... Good to see your channel... Thanks for sharing your journey 😊
I laughed so much, cause your journey with its successes, failures, and learned. Is what I’m going through now. Rode a plastic board in the mid 70s for about a week it wasn’t fun. Attempted to surf 3x got up several times but didn’t really surf. Now 54 yrs young and 10 days in surfskating, scuffed up body, sprained ankle n toe and whatever injuries to come. I’m LOVING it. Working that compression/decompression in the bowl is fun and difficult. Thanks your video has n is helpful n supportive. If ever in Atlanta, let me know
I'm essencially in the same situation - mid 30's, teenage years on a regular skateboard (stopped after I broke my wrist as a young adult), and a few days back I started surfskating which went surprisingly well so far, with first slides and stuff. I miss riding bowls and miniramps but was unsure whether it's worth to approach it again, but you are an incredible inspiration, thank you! I guess my waterborne adapters aren't first choice when it comes to riding parks (my deck, a Beercan Boards cruiser made of aluminium isn't anyways), but I'm already thinking about a dedicated setup. 😅 Greetings from Berlin! 🤜🤛
Yeah Mark, thanks a lot for taking the time to put this videos together and inspire (as I can read on thread of comments) a bunch of guys that aren't ready to throw the towel on some old dreams, yet. I'm 45 and I'm loving it. Last time I did some skating I was about 12 yr old! Life is good 🙏🙌
Omg thanks for this video! I’m 32 and just started a few months ago and am relieved to see your cringe phase! I’m right there in it and it’s motivating to see you get through it! 😊
There is still stuff that I do that I want to improve but it is amazing how much I have progressed in 3 years. Surfskating has a pretty fast learning curve to get to intermediate stage but the little style things take a long time to master! Keep going and enjoy your journey!
Thanks man. I’ve been at it 5 months on flat and am now going 4 days a week at 615 am at the local park. I’m starting to buy different boards from Carver now and I’m always fully padded up. Yours ,(scared shitless) Joe blow 65 years young.
Yes Joe! Padding up can be uncomfortable in the heat, but it sure beats missing out on months of skating or regressing in our progress while sitting out injured, and the older we get the longer those recoveries take.
Hi Mark. Thanks for the cool surfskate lessons. I am 39 years old and started surf skating 3 months ago. Your videos motivate me to improve my skills every day. Greetings from Switzerland
So great to hear! I keep on exceeding my own expectations of what I thought I would be able to accomplish, so definitely don't think you started too late, just think of how lucky you are to have started when you did!
Thanks for sharing! It’s great to see your progression! Also super cool that you are combining traditional skateboarding tricks with your surfskate! Looking forward to year two 😊
Thanks so much! If you want to see how far I took that street skateboarding / surfskating hybrid in year 2, you might enjoy the short film I put out in October: ua-cam.com/video/jRcxtchqEjQ/v-deo.html
Im 37 turning 38 in 2 months bought a landyachtz pocket knife 1 week ago for $90 brand new, can't beat that price😁 Just started surf skating and I love it. I also been skating for 24yrs. Awesome video by the way🤙🏼
Im a month into surfskating, and this video was really motivating and uplifting to see where my skills can go 🤙 Awesome stuff man. Cant wait to see your progression in year 2!
Awesome progression Mark. Thank you for sharing it. I am in to my 5th month of surfscating and seeing how far have you come in a one year only motivates me more. By the way I am 48 so imagine the looks I am getting when I am riding.
If nothing else, the replies to this video show we aren't alone in the #laterskater crew! If you look at where I am at that point (month 5), I still hadn't reached my Eureka moment when things really started to come together and I know you have the passion so you have lots of new milestones coming soon!
👍👍 Mark, your goal(s) for year 2 are spot on. Style seems to be way down the list of what to work on for too many folks these days.... however when you see a group of skaters or surfers at one spot, I think you will notice that the guy with the smoothest, flowiest style, stands out in the crowd. Little things such as hand placement, body lean, a relaxed posture, etc., go a long ways in the style department. Hang loose my friend. 🤙
Exactly, sometimes I fall into the trap of treating things like a checklist and just wanting to move on to the next. But you are right, the people I love to watch are more about having the effortless “steezy” (I feel like at my age I need to put that in quotations) style, rather than those who can just land a million different technical manoeuvres or tricks. Thanks for watching Dave, I honestly doubted anyone would watch that far to even see that part 😆. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
This is super motivational my dude. I just bought my first surfskate. I'm 31. Haven't skated in about 5 years. But I started longboarding this year and got curious about surfskating.
SurfSkating is like the best of skateboarding combined with the best of longboarding! It feels amazing just carving down a hill or through the City like a longboard, and it feels incredible getting air off a kicker or grinding the bowl coping like a skateboard.
Grew up skateboarding from like 8 to 22. I’m now 49 and really considering grabbing a surf skate just to experience the baseline joy of skating again. Thanks for the video, just solidified my decision.
You won't regret it. If you do it the way I do it is still pretty high impact, but you can have a lot of fun on a SurfSkate doing lower impact stuff, feeling the flow and speed, a perfect way to reconnect with skating after a long absence!
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Thanks, Mark. Went ahead and purchased a Carver Greenroom ( I’m 6’3”) based on one of your reviews and can’t wait for it to arrive! Cheers, Mate!
Hi Mark, great vidoe mate. I'm 50 years old and have just ordered my first surf skate. I'm a bit scared but i used to skate and surf many years ago. I currently have a long board but really like what you an do on a surf skate. Anyhow, your video was a bit of an inspiration mate so thank you. Chris
I love hearing that Chris, and frankly I can't think of anyone who has tried surfskating, especially those who may have been off a board for a while, and not fallen in love with it. You are in for a treat! Enjoy your surfskate journey and have a look at my tutorial videos as you start to progress.
This is so inspirational. I turned 40 in November and after buying my first surfskate about 2 weeks ago i am hooked! I am trying to get out as much as i can (mostly on the flat) i even tried a few skate parks, feel so old with all the kids and a bit daft lol. But i am loving it and it’s definitely my happy place at the moment. Just trying to work on my flow for now. But my goal for this year is to learn to ride a bowl. I love to surf in the summer but I was made redundant from my job and am now looking at jobs away from the coast. Surfskating is helping me keep my spirits up. Thanks for the video👍
Through the pandemic, Surfskating has been my saving grace when I had to scrap surf trips, soccer and everything else. Definitely check out my Bowl tutorial video if you haven’t already to help speed up your learning process. Best of luck with the job hunt!
Now that I own a YOW and see what all the hype is about, I want to prepare you to not expect YOW performance from the Carve540, but it is an awesome board for getting started. Where I live, you can buy 3 Oxelos for less than one YOW.
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer The 540 is €99 here in Berlin from Decathlon. The Yow I tried that got me hooked was over €300! I’m not good enough to buy a Yow....yet. At least I can always borrow my friend’s’ Yow when she’s not around haha. Might even buy it from her when she outgrows it in the future. Congrats on the anniversary. I’ve been going 5 days now and still have uninjured knees and hips...so far.
Wow. I so missed the last 2 years. But now I'm subscribed. I resurrected my transition skating, skating period, at 61, after at least 25 years of no skating. I got a frozen shoulder about 6 mos. into COVID due to a fail on my longboard over a 7' wall with coping. Duh! This really got in my head. But I am still progressing at a more cautious rate. But at the same time exposing myself to more ideas, approaches and just skating. Just more safely for an 'ole man. Thanks so much for the inspiration and skill sharing.
All about calculated risk and finding the enjoyment in little things. I've been really getting into curb skating lately and having a blast. Feels great and gives the same stoke but less risky than having to ollie onto a tall ledge. Keep finding that stoke!
Thank you for watching! Tomorrow is the end of year 2 and I can’t believe the progress I have made in the 2nd year also. Don’t be afraid to push your limits!
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer thanks for the encouragement Mark! I’ll grab the c5 trucks tomorrow at Rollin and try them out! I have been training with Cx and C7 and I love them. I hope to see you around Ottawa when I get back!
Happy anniversary dude! Amazing progress, im nowhere near that good, hope you post "how to" videos too, I'll have a look. I'm still carving at 45, the greatest coolest work out 🤙
Great progression! Thx for your inspiring video. I’ll be 38 in August and want to buy a Slide Surfskate next week on our Italy vacation. And maybe also get a learning session there from a local skating school. I never really skated much. But I did use a Snakeboard a lot in my youth, so I hope this helps me with the Surfskate. I also want to use a helmet and protectors, even though i never see anyone with protection in Austria. But since I’m a medical Masseur it’s important for me and especially my hands. Hope there will come more of you!
Snakeboard experience might help, or it might cause bad habits? I saw a girl at my local skatepark tearing up the park on a ripstick but she took a bad fall and stopped skating. To try to cheer her up I went over and suggested she try out my surfskate. She kept trying to use her back foot to engage the turns. But probably could figure it out soon enough. Definitely use the helmet and pads! Every now and then I go without and usually end up regretting it. When you are in your late 30s, you don’t heal as fast. Hopefully you are less worried about looking 😎 cool now as you may been have in your teenage days!
Great Video mate ! the only thing I'd do is to make some contrast on your voice, ( ups and lows ) to break the monotone. other than that excellent, keep it up!
That's awesome Mark!! You are a good challenge! Question: where is that snake (6:01) run that you found on the road trip? I have a CAVER CX track. What track do you use at 15:36 ?
Thanks! I didn’t want to venture there initially as there were so many good tutorial videos out already. As I’ve grown more confident, I am starting to realize things that worked for me are sometimes a little different than what is described in other tutorial videos, so I have more planned for this year. Sometimes one little way of describing something differently can be the thing that clicks to help others learn. Stay tuned!
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Exactly. I think we can't get enough tutorials. And it is the huge demand on my channel. But we need better riders like you who actually know what they're doing. 😂
Congrats on finding so much enjoyment and a year of great progress! You inspired me to get back to skateboarding in my 30's and have been enjoying progressing in Kingston. Thanks :) Have to go on a park tour your way eventually! I'd love a surf-skate but most options sold out currently. Keep well enjoying!
SurftheGreats had one available last I checked just as an FYI! More of a skatepark one with park wheels and C5 trucks but it looks like a great board if into learning bowls, grinds, and more progressive skating than just carving. Surf Ontario has waterborne adapters to convert a regular board. Let me know if you are up this way!
The roundhouse cutback in Month 5 is so clean! I need to spend more time drilling on the kickturn portion. It'd also be interesting to see what maneuvers are categorized as beginner vs intermediate (Because I feel like SUCH a beginner... ALL the time!)
I think you said on FB that you had no street skating or surfing background? That makes a big difference. Like if I try to do any of this switch, I am pretty much at month one, but I also kind of like that because whenever I am trying to teach someone and they are having trouble, I can just try it switch and put myself in their shoes! Honestly, just spend lots of time on your board and try making tiny adjustments. Experiment with foot position, weight distribution, where you put your arms... One day I was leaning back a little further than usual and all of a sudden my pumping was just working twice as well. Keep going! It will get easier once you reach that breakthrough month.
I have been doing normal/cruising skateboarding for 1 and 1/2 year and just bought a surfskate because I have started surfing and at my age doing those crazy olie jumps those youngsters are doing in skatepark is just impossible for me. So surfskating looked perfect to me, allowing to train for surfing and doing some nice cruising turns. I have adapted a YOW system on a cruiser board but sorry to say it took me at least a week to dare doing a few meter as the front wheel was so wobbly. So what you are doing in Day 1 will take me 1 year or more to do. Thanks for the video anyway
Everyone has the right pace for them, and I was stoked to find this because I was such a slow learner when it came to surfing. But remember that progress isn’t linear, you’ll get to a stage where things begin to click and your progress will start accelerating faster!
YOOOOOOOOOO!!!! FOA, you rock bro. This is my FIRST MONTH surfskating and I'm 32. You just gave me all the confidence and motivation I need! Subscribed!!!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Where in Canada are you? Hope to learn from you in person one day!
Great video diary, Mark. Very inspiring. I started skatesurfing 2 months ago. Took some nasty falls, but nothing too serious. I try to get to the skatepark 3-5 times a week. Love the bowls. 🤟🤟
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer I’m finding that out right now as I’m searching for boards lol. I really like your skatepark setup. Any recommendations on surfskate completes around that size?

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer thank you for the reply/recommendations. I’m considering purchasing a Coyote board and converting it with the waterborne surf adaptor (seeing how all carver trucks are sold out at the moment). Based on the custom setup options on their website if you start with the deck only, what setup would you go with for something that would perform well for both cruising and an occasional trip to the skatepark? I want to learn how to speed check with this board. I would appreciate any feedback you might have! loadedboards.com/products/coyote-longboard-skateboard
@@BetterWithAir I know ShredShack did a review of the Coyote recently, that might be a good resource. I like waterborne for carving on the flats but they add a lot of weight for skatepark use.
Hi Mark, first of all: absolutely ripping! I was wondering if you can give us some more detail on how you believe surfskating helps your regular surfing in the ocean? What is really replicable, what is (very) different, any other things worth to mention. Just started surfskating to progress my surfing on flat days, but really like it!! Cheers
Finally got to put it into practice the past week! I am not an advanced surfer by any means since I usually only get to do it a couple times a year. But the last time I went I definitely noticed that my ability to shift my weight to the right spot, get into the tuck knee position, and use my upper body more effectively was a lot better. But I had to really think about it. Like I needed to be mindful and think of doing what I would do on the surfskate rather than fall into old habits.
Well, doing surfskating with prebuilt skateboarding skills/muscle memory, is a whole different story than learning surfskating with no skating/snowboarding/surfing background at all, which is something I'm doing at age 37. It took me two weeks to just roll into the bowl...Now 8months has passed and I could only do basic things like carve a 5ft with grinding coping, flyout, slope slide/snap 180. Drop-in is still a nightmare that I don't want to touch...
Hi Mark, what brand of surfskate do you ride? I’m 50 years old and two months in on my Carver Super Surfer which to be honest I brought because of the epic graphic underneath. I’d only ever seen Carver boards in my local Surf/skate shops here in Wellington New Zealand. I didn’t know there were other brands until I checked UA-cam. A great way to learn. Yours looks a lot lighter or maybe it’s your years of skate experience. I’ve surfed for 36 years. Glad I got all the pads as I work a physical job and can’t afford to get injured. It’s brought my 13 year old son and I even closer
I have ridden about 30 different boards over the past two years! But at the moment my go to board is the Whitetail Whaleshark deck which is perfectly designed for my skate-surf hybrid style of riding. I've been switching between the different Carver trucks and YOW meraki mainly in recent days.
I’m 41, yep maybe a midlife crisis but I’ve always wanted to skate but when I was a kid I couldn’t afford one. I bought one at 18, bought a nice board from Fairmans in West Chester PA. A couple days into having that board, my cousin graduated high school and really liked the board so I just gave it to him. 23 hrs later and here I am ready to get a cruiser board and just ride… no tricks just enjoy riding and see where it takes me. Wish me luck and don’t laugh at me if you see me.
hey Mark I see at 5:39 that you have the board carver x bureo the ahi 27 surfskate. i begin since a moth and have also the same board but it feels completey different then a wooden surfskate have u maybe some tips for me?
The first one I owned! This board got me hooked on surfskating but I did outgrow it pretty fast. The flex and the short deck held me back a bit from really advancing. I ended up switching the trucks and wheels to a wood deck and in that way it is still serving me today. I did a review of it here: ua-cam.com/video/s9-s2sFsEHE/v-deo.html . Also, if you loosen the kingpin, you can get a little more carve from it, it came pretty tight when it was new.
What wheels are you riding the most? Or what wheels do you prefer? Thank you for your work! It is so inspiring for me. I‘m 37 and i‘m starting with my first surfskate experiences.. :) Regards from germany
For flat ground, I really like the roundhouse concaves, they are 69mm 78a. Super traction but they still release well enough for slides. I have a video on my favourite skatepark board that goes into detail on my fave park wheels, where I prefer a smaller harder wheel that runs faster, releases from coping better, and slides well. I think from memory they are 65mm roundhouse 81a, but do not get the ecothane ones, I really didn’t like those.
Hi Paul, I find that to be the case because you have so much mobility from the surfskate trucks, whereas on a regular skateboard there are some tighter turns in which you'd have to lift your front wheels off the wall and initiate a kickturn to get the board back down the transition. Right now I have a setup with Carver c5 trucks that is great for riding bowls and being able to grind the coping and do airs out of the bowl. For more simple riding and carving I love the YOW Medina. I have videos about both of these boards on my channel that you could check out. Cheers.
I have a huge list of videos in development right now, so it might be a bit of time before I could get around to that, but the good news is there are some good tutorials on instagram for that one, as well as debate about what it is actually called! I call it a BS 180 powerslide revert to forward, but there were like 30 different answers to someone's survey question. @ShaneLai has a video on how to do this same move but frontside here: ua-cam.com/video/AmSGdQtCql8/v-deo.html
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Mark! 36 and looking foreward to scoring a surfskate and learn how to use it!! Let me ask you: is it a "classic" skate deck you're using at around 2:50-3:00 min? With C5 trucks? Can you talk a little bit of the wheels and how you felt it?
Thanks for answering! Does it performs ok? Would you recommend using that kind of decks? (Thinking of a bigger one right now, as I'll be learning, but i'm curious)
@@alebrenna441 I think it depends on your intentions for getting into surfskating, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first SurfSkate. Better to start with something more standard with a wider deck and longer wheelbase to learn all the basics of pumping and carving, and when you are looking for new challenges, that is when you should look into customizing based on your own style. However, some of the old school powell peralta style pool cruisers do work well as surfskate decks.
Hi! Nice vid! I've got a question about the C5 trucks. How do they compare to your normal skateboard trucks? I was wondering if it is really different from simply running your regular trucks very loose?
More different than night and day! I can’t explain why, but they are. I tried making my own hamboard, I put reverse kingpin longboard trucks on a huge angled riser and thought it might ride like the C5s but it wasn’t even close. Just kept wheel biting.
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer hi Mark, thnx for that. I don't know why there's so little to be found on the C5 trucks. They seem to be the best of both worlds.
Yeah, I have never claimed that this will translate to the ocean. I`m just having fun riding my surfskate since I rarely get the opportunity to surf ocean waves.
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Oh sorry I meant the coping, at 1:23, didn’t know the term sorry. Haha from flats to riding that high up and that speed would probably take me half a year! But I appreciate your videos, really helpful
@@gershom86 Ah sorry! I read too much into it! Definitely the snowboard/skateboard/surf background helped me figure out riding transition faster than is probably average, but I know that with lots of practice everyone can get there!
Thanks for sharing @Mark! I want to buy a surfskate that I can use to improve my surfing (tight turns, slides etc) but at the same time use in bowls and mini ramps....would you recommend the Carver Scape/Bel Air with the C5 trucks?
Hey Aaron, wondering if you have a skateboard background? If so those board options might be great choices, especially if spending a lot of time in the miniramp. If you are more interested in surfing practice, C5 trucks might not be the way to go, as they don't have as much rail to rail lean.
I’m new to skateboarding and have had the Decafhalon Oxelo as an entry board for a couple months, and I’m wondering if there are “better” trucks (C7, CX) or complete boards that you would maybe recommend for a next step board.
CX are similar to Oxelo but turn smoother. C7 would be sort of the next level up to get a bit more flowy surfy feel and a lot of intermediate riders find these to be a good next board after an entry level. Personally, my favourite all-around system right now include the YOW meraki truck system. They will feel a lot more loose and have much more lean than the oxelo so they are a breeze to pump and generate speed from a standstill. It will take a bit longer to get used to than C7 but really not a big deal after a day or two of practice.
You seem to use quite a few boards, could you elaborate why? Do they all have different purposes? I have the decathlon board, seemed like a good beginner choice.
Décathlon board is a great starting point! Each board you see does have unique characteristics, and they all get regular use depending on style of riding and terrain. But really I just fell in love with the sport and every time I saw one pop up for sale second hand at a good price (not often where I live), I added to the collection. Then I started experimenting with different decks and wheels from there.
Hey I wanted to start taking my carver to the park I’ve really been enjoying pump tracks but I wanted to know how tight you run your trucks for the park or not would be a huge help!!!
Personally, I like them as loose as they go, but I would recommend sticking with what you are used to to start so that they behave predictably. As you get comfortable you can tweak to your liking.
Glad you asked! I have been communicating with a board shaper to create exactly that and she delivered what I think is the perfect deck for that need. It is called the “whale shark” and it will be available in mid-August from www.jackalop.com . If you send a message to them you may be able to pre-order from the first run as I expect they could sell out quick.
Good sharing. Started last year at 61, pulled the calf muscle once and injured the knee ligaments once. After that everything ok now.
Yesterday I bought a skateboard for my daughter...actualy I wanted to buy one for me too...but seeing the clip, and your reaction, now I think why not.
Just what I needed to hear ... 59 here
Kudos to u for starting at 61, I started last Nov at 59 & thought I was the most senior 🤔 Had my fair share of injuries but like they say, no pain no gain. Very comfortable with carving & sliding. Just started last week on a pump track to aim for pumping/snaps on bowls
Likewise, I'm also 61 yrs old. Started a month ago, guess is never too old to have fun. Thanks for sharing
Same same.
Spending just 10 minutes couple time a week working on speed generation and getting my turns in. Then injured my Achilles’ tendon . :-(
I’m 64 and trying to improve my surfing.
I lost 50 years of my Life

66 and got my first skateboard (surfskate) 2 months ago. Got it mostly to land train for surfing but once I saw a bowl I knew I had to carve it. Hope my knees hold up!!
@@daneroberts3738 it's a such funny tendency) my neighborhood is 58 and had four skateboard - arbor, carver, yow and he is very happy about it) I'll brought my first surf skate at 35))
Hey man
I m actually on my first month of surfskate , I m 39 , and I came across your videos because I bought the carve bird oxelo
You re really inspiring , thx for sharing those videos
I’m gonna be you! Way to go man.
Just adding for the algorithm! 😉 I am 43 and just have my first month of surfskating behind me. I am addicted and yes, you are an influencer!
I started surfskating two yesrs and half ago when I was 49 , I turn 51 last august and I'm keep going and keep having fun. Thank you so much for your videos, they are always helpful and inspirational
Thank bro !! I am 42 years old and I discovered surfskate !!! Love it so much !!
@@JFKaufmann Thank you - makes sense. Any chance of a video? :-)

this is a freaking AMAZING video! so beautifully done!!
Yeah! You should definitely check some of my more recent stuff, major progress since this video!
Awesome dude!! I started at the age of 40🤟 i have never been on a skateboard.. My first board was a surfskate.. And i love it🤟
Yeah! That is awesome Britt 🤙🏽
Thanks for sharing, I am 36 and I discovered a surf skateboard a couple of weeks ago. It's so much fun.
You're still young my man, I'm 53 and still rocking these board and surf...but more cautious lol.You are young!!! Stay stoked you're awesome!
If ever in Atlanta, let me know
Yeah, keep going it is worth it! Check out my playlist on surfskate skills for lots of tutorials.
Greetings from Berlin!

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer I got a few skate parks near by. I wanna ride this bowl and this down hill pipe. Bowl is my goal right now.

Chris

The snow gap was great!
46 starting out here as well. New to surfing too. Skated as a teen but never progressed to tricks more like pushing only. Want to progress to bowls

Super inspiring, Mark. So glad you put this together. And very much look forward to more videos from you. How about some tutorials for your tricks?

Good job this is awesome! Can’t wait for my first year surf skate anniversary this next October!! Ha ha cool edit -s great content!
Great job man! Awsome progress and skills!

Amazing bro!
That sounds like great progress for someone with no boardsport background! Keep it up!
Never too late man! Get out there and have fun!
hey Mark
I see at 5:39 that you have the board carver x bureo the ahi 27 surfskate. i begin since a moth and have also the same board but it feels completey different then a wooden surfskate have u maybe some tips for me?
The first one I owned! This board got me hooked on surfskating but I did outgrow it pretty fast. The flex and the short deck held me back a bit from really advancing. I ended up switching the trucks and wheels to a wood deck and in that way it is still serving me today. I did a review of it here: ua-cam.com/video/s9-s2sFsEHE/v-deo.html . Also, if you loosen the kingpin, you can get a little more carve from it, it came pretty tight when it was new.
60 is actually the perfect age for this.
What wheels are you riding the most? Or what wheels do you prefer? Thank you for your work! It is so inspiring for me. I‘m 37 and i‘m starting with my first surfskate experiences.. :)
Regards from germany
For flat ground, I really like the roundhouse concaves, they are 69mm 78a. Super traction but they still release well enough for slides. I have a video on my favourite skatepark board that goes into detail on my fave park wheels, where I prefer a smaller harder wheel that runs faster, releases from coping better, and slides well. I think from memory they are 65mm roundhouse 81a, but do not get the ecothane ones, I really didn’t like those.
Exactly my question and also 37 and just starting 😅
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer thank you !! 🙏 i‘ll give them a try
I'm the same age as you and this gives me inspiration thanks man and keep shredding! Did you just put the surf skate trucks on a standard board?
I have a mix of surfskate completes and my own creations in this vid.
Are bowls and transitions easier on a surfskate than a traditional bowl? Also, what is your favorite board for skatepark and bowls and transitions?
Hi Paul, I find that to be the case because you have so much mobility from the surfskate trucks, whereas on a regular skateboard there are some tighter turns in which you'd have to lift your front wheels off the wall and initiate a kickturn to get the board back down the transition. Right now I have a setup with Carver c5 trucks that is great for riding bowls and being able to grind the coping and do airs out of the bowl. For more simple riding and carving I love the YOW Medina. I have videos about both of these boards on my channel that you could check out. Cheers.
Impressive!
Hi Mark I love your channel! Could you do a tutorial for the move at 1:07 please!
Thank you so much you rock 🤘🏽
Yes this is a standard 8x31 popsicle deck on C5 trucks with Carver Roundhouse wheels
Thanks a lot Mark!
Hi!
Happy for you bro! But from being graceful on land to riding the lip is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge gap. Not all of us have the natural talent haha
I’m just now learning to carve and pump six months into long boarding/surf skate.🤨
Longboards do make it a bit tougher but they are a lot of fun on long downhill sections.
I've just notice you have more videos in your channel :D I will check them out.
Varsity of tricks 😮🤩✨
What would be the board that you recommend for combining easier traditional skate + surfskate tricks?
Glad you asked! I have been communicating with a board shaper to create exactly that and she delivered what I think is the perfect deck for that need. It is called the “whale shark” and it will be available in mid-August from www.jackalop.com . If you send a message to them you may be able to pre-order from the first run as I expect they could sell out quick.
