Thank you so much for this video. I have been riding a carver around my neighborhood for years. I feel like I am pretty good at it. However, after watching this video and trying what you are saying here...... I now realize why my surfing has gone downhill the last few years. I have been riding my carver all wrong. All wrong! I have formed some real bad habits around generating speed and flowing. I have not been throwing my weight around and using my arms and springing my legs up and down. I spent 20 minutes today flowing around my garage using this technique. Huge difference in the feel of the board and much more smooth. I could imagine myself on the face of a wave. This video is really gold for me. I can't thank you enough.

Great job simplifying the best movement universally across all board sports. This is surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding. This movement of hips and shoulders, using up and down patterns works equally well in all these 3 sports. I see so many snowboarders doing the same thing wrong. Fighting their own bodies with every turn..
Very informative thanks dude. You're a natural coach. Stoked to skate my Carver some more. Been sick and injured and out of shape and looking forward to train and get strong again and eventually back in the water.

You do make it look so easy. Compressing and extending on a surf skate requires considerable balance and that takes several months of slow gentle practise.
I am quite comfortable on a skateboard, but I would disagree that it takes several months. once people can comfortably stand upon a board and move forward, they're more than capable of extending and compressing. it just requires the correct approach. some flat ground "patterning" can help as well

Because thats how you snowboard with a duck stance... you cant tuck your knee like that unless you have double positive stance angles. Good luck hitting the park with a narrow double posi carving stance lmfao
Great and informative video! Awesome taking the neuroscience & biomechanics approach to it👌🏻 Realised my form sucks 😅 Been looking for a proper surf skate program for awhile now to do on my Smoothstar! When is it anticipated to be available?
hopefully within a few short weeks. it was nearly ready, and then upon review, realised it needed a couple other chunks of content to streamline the learning process.
"Muscle memory" . Central nervous system: Muscle memory is a result of motor learning that occurs in the central nervous system..."Neural pathways" Strengthening: Practicing a skill repeatedly strengthens the neural pathways associated with it, making the action feel more natural..Both muscle memory and neural pathways need repeated strengthening, practice repeatedly correctly...If not you ingrain wrong muscle memory that takes twice as long to undo via repeatedly practicing correctly....Nuances come from a base of "muscle memory" where you relax and adjust accordingly, yet are emergent from a solid fundamental technique... Amateurs practice until they occasionally get it right, professionals practice to rarely get it wrong..
Some feedback on the "rant" section for your coaching: people learn differently. Some by feeling/doing and some by analysing. The analytical ones are probably the ones asking the how and when questions because that's how they process their learning, so you shouldn't really be taking that away from them in a surf lesson just because you think it is a feeling thing. To be able to understand the feeling, you first have to experience it. And to experience it you have to know how to create it. So to get that first feeling, even if just for a split second, the how and when questions become useful. After they have experienced how it is supposed to feel then they can try replicate that and chase perfection for the rest of their life. You don't learn to write by someone telling you just to feel the flow of ink on the paper. You learn to write first by learning to construct letters, then words, then sentences. After learning how to obtain the correct feeling through a process (and muscle memory as you pointed out), then the flow can be achieved Coming from an analytical learner 👌
I appreciate the comment, and hope you took something benefical from the video, other than the rant. I feel that you're jumping to some conclusions about my coaching or awareness of how to coach, so please let me elaborate. also take note that this is just a silly youtube video, filmed ad-lib, and in no way portrays, nor could, my entire approach and understanding of coaching. I am exceptionally aware of the different learning styles of individuals, as having been a successful trainer, coach, and surf coach for 15 years now, and also running highly successful surf coaching trips. we cater to all learning styles, as that is absolutely necessary to relay information in a digestible format for our clients and guests. I too am VERY analytical, but I also understand the necessity of kinesthesia in surf coaching. details are fine IF they're relevant to the skill and learning style of the surfer. an issue is that many newfound surf tutorials dive into "details", finite minutia, when in reality they often hold minimal relevance to the aspiring surfer. figuring out foot pressures is of little relevance if the surfer isn't able to visually perceive where or when to bottom turn. the minutia of pressures holds little relevance if a surfer can't simply compress into a bottom turn and lead with the rear arm. the specific details often asked generally don't hold relevance, YET, to that surfer. the approach needs to "broadened", as many aspiring surfers aren't yet at a point in their surfing where in the midst of flying down a wave face can they focus on tiny specifics, like slight alterations in foot pressures in a bottom turn. that type of specificity is for the advanced surfer, as they are comfortable enough in that type of surf situation to "slow down" the moment and place attention on details, rather than racing to the shoulder. Nowhere in this video did I say students or aspiring surfers shouldn't ask questions or ask for details. Asking questions is a necessary step of the learning process, and is welcomed and warranted. I simply impressed the aspect of needing to FEEL positions. simply considering or analytically thinking of details is only one aspect of learning surfing.... the magic happens in the feeling. an analytical approach is welcomed and highly relevant, but I always impress upon people the NEED to transition from a solely cognitive approach to a kinesthetic approach, as we are surfers, and it all comes down to being able to perceive and react. I hope you see some of my other videos and realize that I am a rather well-rounded coach, and have spent a LONG time learning how to best communicate with my clients (it's impossible to convey this in its entirety in a short singular youtube video). :)
@@SurfStrengthCoach yeah don't sweat it too hard man. Simply saying don't neglect people's way of learning and push your own idea of it too hard because everyone is different. The part around 9:30 was a bit of a dig at a certain type of learning and teaching, so it opens the doors for a dig back. People who just want to jump in and do it are the ones who learn like that and the people who wait and ask questions are the ones who learn like that. It's constructive feedback, not criticism 😊 Potentially jumping to conclusions indeed! But that is how I interpreted you message. Nonetheless I did learn something useful here
What I think really helps to simulate riding a wave on these things on flat ground is to ride in an arc! Never ride it straight. To me it feels like the centrifugal force of the arc simulates the force of the wave. When you pump while riding in an arc (for ease of visualization just think of riding in a giant circle) it feels like this. The turn that tightens the radius of the arc is the bottom turn and feels "heavier" because the centrifugal force of the turn combines with the centrifugal force of the arc. The turn that loosens the radius of the arc is the top turn and feels "lighter" because the centrifugal force of the turn subtracts from the centrifugal force of the arc. Just be careful and don't slide out on a "bottom turn" when you start pumping really aggressively.

Legend I use your app loads of UA-cam videos best out there 🏄👍👊🌊
Pumping is great. Not everyone who rides a carver gets in the water. Travelling onboard without feet pushing is great.
I did the Poo man on a Snowboard while turning toeside, a nice police lady took a picture to show me and told me to stop and I'm very grateful haha.
She showed you the light... and you were forever grateful for the awakening. Hahaha!
Because thats how you snowboard with a duck stance... you cant tuck your knee like that unless you have double positive stance angles. Good luck hitting the park with a narrow double posi carving stance lmfao
Dude, you are the Bruce Lee of surfing!
Best instruction vid out there!!! Thank you
Great and informative video!
Nonetheless I did learn something useful here
thanks for sharing ur wisdom, man !! spot on !!
Love your energy 🔋 💪🏻 🏄🏻♂️ ⚡️
Great video I teach surfskating as well and I love how you guys dont overcomplicate things keep up the good content :)
Thank goodness I watched this. I took a video of myself after this and realized I am 100% poo man. Time to start over!
Just be careful and don't slide out on a "bottom turn" when you start pumping really aggressively.
best thing to do is not ride flat ground! start surfing some ramps so you can actually interact with centrifugal forces.
This guy speaks my "language"
No bullshit.... short and easy to understand stuff...
One picture a thousand words... Poopstance face 😆
Thanx
The face says it all......
@@SurfStrengthCoach YOU CANT SKATE
When are you guys doing another coaching trip!?
We do coaching trips all year long... every year. Although this year was a bit funny. 2021 is mostly booked with guests we had to move from this year to next. But we are releasing more trips / dates soon. If you want to get notified and have a chance of making a trip, I’d suggest you sign up for the notification list. We book out about a year + in advance. You can sign up here for notifications. You’ll see we don’t have 2021 trips listed yet, because we’re still allocating all our 2020 guests to 21’ trips before we release them to the public. Do you prefer carver or smoothstar
My PERSONAL preference is carver. for beginner surfers or those new to skating, I would recommend a carver. Smoothstars are great if that is someone's preference for personal style and feel, but they can be difficult for beginners.
We need more poo man wiggling footage!
Great vid with loads of helpful tips, thank you 🙏
thanks Tim, you're welcome!
Great video. Super informative! Thanks.
Great video, lots of solid information
Great content I like to do reverse lunges on the bosu ball for pumping and my stabilization.
"Pooman wiggle" it's phenomenal🤣
Wonderful vid to practice with my Knox !
Great tutorial. Thanks 4 the advices!!
I love a rugby ball thing at 4:28! :)
What are your thoughts about using a rip stick where the board flexes compared to a skateboard?
I have no idea, I don't know what a rip stick is!
Tysm! This is super helpful 🙏
you explained it very well buddy, thanks !!
Really enjoyed the rant at the end after seeing for myself the do’s and don’ts. Made a lot of sense! Thanks
