How to DROP IN on your SURF SKATE!! (Bowl Tutorial Pt 1.)

- One thing a lot of people are hesitant about with surf skates is dropping in on a ramp. Especially if this is your first experience on a skateboard, it can be pretty intimidating to trust those wobbly trucks. This week on Surf Skate tips, I break down the drop-in process step by step with plenty of slow-motion examples.
Check out some of my other surf skate tutorials!!

Nice! I put this off for sooooo long. When I finally got the guts to try it I was amazed at how it really wasn't that different from doing it on a regular skateboard. But yeah, can't emphasize enough that you can't back out of dropping in once that nose starts to drop. I went 80% commitment my first time on a regular skateboard and sprained my ankle. No less than 100%. Now my 8 year old can do it and makes fun of how she beat me by 30 years and got hers first try!
It seems like it would be so different!! Dropping in in general seems to be one of these direct moments of fear you need to get past, but after that it’s like muscle memory. That’s awesome you and your daughter can share skating together. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos man! Thanks for watching
I really want to do it. Did it like 8 times in total (6 today). Got totally wasted. Always too much on tail and not on front foot so I felt on back, elbow all these times. The problem is that I am quite confident on all those previous ramps and such but this easiest dropin possible always waste me. There is no midstep that would help.
Thanks for this tutorial man, I'm going to need it badly. I just started surf skating at 45...which means there's about 30 yrs since the last time I was on top of a skate board. It's incredible how some old dreams just don't die 🙌
Love that you’re still doing it Luis. Let me know how it goes. Keep shredding 🛹
Same here :)
Great advice, excellent video and tips! Thanks a lot!! Been struggling a lot with drop ins in general, bit that was some excellent breakdown of the various steps. Keep it up!
Made my first order for a shirt, coffee mug, and stickers. Best way I can say you are rad and keep sharing the positivity with the world.
My dude, always coming through with style. I built a surf skate with the Waterborne adapter. The first setup wasn't where I needed it to be to learn true surf skating so I rebuilt it in another board with shark wheels and now it is awesome.
Thank you so much man!!! You’ve been a huge inspiration and great support through this whole endeavor. It’s very much appreciated. Stoked you found a setup that works for you, looking forward to seeing how it rides and your new custom setup!!
Subscribed. Been looking down at my feet and falling. Will look forward thank you! :)
This is a great tutorial. Building up the courage to drop in on a surfskate is intimidating. Still working on it, so this helped a lot :)
Hey Richard, hope it provided some help for you! It can be intimidating but you got it, let me know how it goes!
Sir carves alot!! Miss coming to the park and seeing you shred!!
You too man! Always good times
I love avocados. I enjoy your reviews, your delivery, your instructions, and being able to be part of your lifestyle passions. I’m 47 and started longboard skating this summer. I have a SurfOne by Robert August. Love your Hamburg review. Subscribed and liked, enjoyed, and look forward to seeing more! Paul in Yuma
Hey Paul, sorry for the late response. Thanks for your message, it means a lot. Hope the stoke stays eternally lit for you sir, best of luck with everything
So sick man 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks dude!! Appreciate you watching
Thank you for the tips dude!
Glad it could be of help for you!!
I wish youtube existed when i was coming up 😂 if you were in a park with friendly people, they'd help you correct your posture, stance, etc., when you were there... but you couldn't get this level of help on command like the kids these days... having a hard time explaining it to the nephew? one quick search and BOOM, excellent demonstration!!
Thanks for the comment dude! Half of the reason I put out these tutorials is because I wish I had somebody explaining more niche topics when I was just starting myself. That's awesome you guys have skateboarding that you can share together. Stay stoked!
Very helpful mate ! 🤙🤙
Yeww right on man, glad it was helpful
Dude I need that griptape! Looks so sick!
love that deck!
Chris Miller Welcome Deck! Thanks 🙏
Very useful. Thank you!
Awesome, thanks for watching man!
I really love this guy
Cheers my friend!
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
Thank you so much. I really want to try but I’m so scared to drop in. It’s better to know how other people do.
thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful 🛹
💪🤘👌...POSITIVE VIBES
Been skateboarding for 12yrs now and surfing for 2 now and I gotta say that skating and surfing go hand in hand for some things especially pumping and turning
Definitely! For me it’s a lot of the body mechanics and movements to build up for muscle memory as well. It will never help me out paddle a massive set, but I like to try and find different components of my game that I can work on through other things. Happy shredding 🤙🏼
Great tutorial. Adventures in skateboarding at 40+ sent me here. Like your channel.
Yeww right on! Thanks for checking it out. He’s a solid guy, glad to have you in the community
That overview fish-eye lens is pretty cool
love that 360 cam too! Thanks for watching
2022 surfskate goal right here: BOWLSSS. After downhill carving, pumptracks & cruising, I want to improve my bowlriding, this seems like a crucial skill for it!
Surf skating in bowls is one of my favorite things for sure. I’m working on a video for it right now actually. What kinds of questions/things would you like to see in it?
@@WorkForAvocados surprise us, no specific question comes to mind ☺️
Thanks. So nice
Glad it helped you 🛹
LMAO!! if you look down, thats where you gonna go + that look to it 😂😂😂
And we definitely do not want that 😬

Grate video bro! Is really the same with de c7? I'm skater but recently trying surfskate so boght c7 carver but I'm kind regreting for not geting the c5

🐊 ☀️ yewwww
I still need to learn it on a regular skateboard :-D for the surfskate I am a bit afraid that it would be too wiggly as normal pushing is also very wiggly. But maybe I should just try. Thanks for the video man!
It’s a little different but if you can go down a decent sized bank on a surf skate with moderate speed I don’t think there’s that much difference! Good luck
What tutorial do you want to see next? The new WorkForAvocados weekly lineup will soon be switching to trick tip Tuesdays, Vlog Fridays and Sunday Interviews. Very excited to bring you guys all this extra content!
I would love to see a step-by-step guide to frontside turns. I really struggle with them. Thanks man!
@Surfskate Love for sure, I can definitely do that! Like front side carves in the bowl or frontside grinds on the Coping
@@WorkForAvocados In the bowl.
Some tutorials / tips drills in top turn snaps would be awesome. I only have access to a pump park with some bowl sections. And having a tough time doing some top turn snaps. Hehe. Any tips to transition to em would be rad!!
Yes, wear a helmet! Great video, SUBSCRIBED!! :)
I am running that same grip tape so I had to sub lol What full set up you have for bowls now on your surf skate?
Love it! On my current bowl setup I’m riding C5s with 65mm slime balls on a whitetail whale shark. I’m this video I believe it’s a Chris Miller welcome deck
I need that shirt
Thanks, maybe next time at Lakeland. Looks simple...in like over 50 years of skating, I have dropped in like 4 times. But on the other side, I have done stupid fast speed on the Carver on flat and hills in Lake County, I need a young guy like you to take "wind boarding" to the next level, look is up on You tube.
Love the Lakeland park, wish it wasn’t so far away. We have a very similar Lakeland park in jax beach now. Can never go wrong with Team Pain. That looks like a lot of fun, does it really give you that much more speed? Could be a blast on a strong NE day. Thanks for being a part of the channel man!!
I have a surfeeling and they have an inverted truck on the back, so the wheels end up not touching the ramp when you position it for the drop in. I bought some protection equipment so I can try it anyways. Hope it works.
thanks
🤙🏼
Heading to the skatepark this morning befire work and god i hope no one is there. Lol thanks for the tips!
How’d it go for you!?
@WorkForAvocados - Surf, Skate and Stoke went well! Didnt get the courage off the coping yet but i started flat, then onto just some decline cement. Baby steps. Haha
I remember dropping in on a normal board used to scare me every time..with the smoothstar it the speed wobble possibility that puts me off..and finding a small enuff transition.
definitely seems weird at first! Good luck
Lol, try dropping in on a ripsurf. I haven't been able to yet, but I can on my carver loaded bolsa.
@@RmfDiz Yea..I wouldnt fancy trying a dropin on a ripsurf
@@middleagedshred it can be done, but It's just hard af apparently...
@@RmfDiz yea I seen someone do it..not much footage of smoothstar dropins last time I looked
What skatepark are you in? The bowl appears super shallow - that looks ideal for learning.
I was taught to drop in looking down to focus energy and weight down and forward. I look up once I'm off the ramp. The skate coach said it's like walking down a stairs, you generally look at the steps. Should I shift to looking up instead? 😅 I haven't had an accident using my look down technique.
Thanks for the comment! If that’s what works for you then go for it. I will say another advantage of looking forward is you’re already eyeing the next section or spot that you’re aiming for. All the best’
Hey man, this is a great help thanks! What size wheels are you using? Cheers dude 👍
Glad it helped you! In this video I’m riding 70mm sector 9s. I’ve recently dropped down to 64mm for park skating
@@WorkForAvocados thanks man, I've literally just gone from 70mm to 65mm for Park and Bowl riding. It feels better for the drop in. With the 70mm I found their was a really strange sensation no matter how hard I stomped the front foot, almost like a delay before the front wheels touched and every time my brain seemed to say 'are we falling???'
Haha I know what you mean. That “cloud” feeling can be good in certain situations but other times it’s definitely not desired. I just posted a new video on reviewing the Shark wheels in the skate park too! Check it out 🤙🏼 happy riding
Nice video and explanation. Thanks man.
What board are you on? Did you modify a skateboard to surfskate?
Cheers 🙏🤙✌️
For sure, glad it was useful to you! I threw my Carver C5 trucks on a Chris Miller Welcome deck. I think it’s a 10.5. I go through cycles of board styles but I think anything wide is best if you’re just starting out on transition! Good luck 👍🏼
Nice. What wheelbase you use? Did screw new holes? I modified a Globe longboardish cruiser, cut of the nose and dialed down the holes for the mount…but it’s pretty flat and almost no kick in the tail. Enjoy your weekend 🤙
I don’t remember the wheelbase for that one unfortunately. Recently switched to a Whitetail and that one is a lot wider at 17”. Before that I never put much stock in wheelbase. I will say though, anything that has a bit of a nose will help locking you in more. I think with surf skates the flatness is great for putting all your weight in slides but the magic is trying to find what works best for you!
Just googled whitetail…looks sick…enjoy and thanks for your time. Have a good one
Am I crazy or did he put vampire jaws on? joking xD, great tutorial
i broke my ankle trying to learn to drop in on my carver. i can (could) ride in on a steep ramp into the bowl, about 3ft bowl.
i think i skipped a few steps. do you recommend learning with a regular skateboard first?
Sorry to hear that. I’ve broken my wrist skating it’s not fun. I would say it really depends on what you most feel comfortable with before learning. If you’re already riding a surf skate then I’d say stick with that. Switching back and forth can lead to some confusion in muscle memory. If I try to hop on a regular board at this point I feel more unsafe because I’m not use to using such a rigid straight line. Maybe tighten up your trucks a bit if you’re having difficulty and also mentally I always made sure that I could carve up to that height and do a backside kick turn before I would go for something on the lip. Also finding an area that wasn’t necessary a half pipe so I could focus on the drop in part and not have to be concerned about an impending ramp on the other side. Not every area has a 2ft ramp so if you can’t find something that small, maybe even a parking curb or something to the extent. Best of luck on your recovery 🤕
If you're ever at sunset island park in the morning seeing me struggling please give me any tips. I've hit the pump track and hill bombing but I'm struggling on tricks and dropping in.
Sorry for the late response! how's the progression going for you?
At the moment I'm practicing when I can. It's summer and having a preschooler takes priority then hitting up the park. I have changed up my pump style(getting lower), I can get some air and go over small ramps but nothing major yet.
The biggest problem with surfskates is the very short tail. I can't lock my balance in the beginning because I have almost nothing to stand on. And my front foot keeps sliding of the board because there is no concave in the nose. Probably will get another deck for park riding.
Agree 100% with you!! I ride a C5 truck but i ride a 10” Chris Miller Welcome deck and feel like it’s a major upgrade. The standard surf skate decks are not the best for performance training. Thanks for watching and best of luck!
@@WorkForAvocados Best of luck to you too!
I have a Soulboardiy which is huge and has quite large tail. So build a surfskate that fits! Still intimidating to drop special old school bowls which are crazy vert at the top
It's My 7th time on the board and I tried to drop in
I smashed because of the loose trucks
With the carver it worked but the smothstar is sooo loose
Glad you made it work! Hope you’re still shredding
Does the gradient of the bow / ramp matter?
For example a 2ft bowl feels straightforward but a 45° ramp terrifies me
hey im sorry for the late response on this. I would say that the vert of the ramp does play a little bit of a part in the first initial drop in because if it's super steep like bowl coping there may be a very small moment of weightlessness. But if you suck your legs up a little more on steeper ramps it helps a lot. Hope your skate journey is going well
Great! btw. I love your teeth 😁
Speed is your friend
Agreed! Makes the slides easier, turns tighter and airs higher
How tight should the trucks be bro?
It really comes down to a personal preference. I ride my surf skate trucks relatively tight. Some people prefer a bit of give! Start small and see what works best for you

If my skateboard tail is flat its still posibble?
Absolutely. I’d say if your nosewas flat it may make it a bit harder to learn at first. I think the flat tail may make it easier for you
@@WorkForAvocados Ok thanks
This video proves the earth is round
👩🎨 🔭
Do you drop a two-foot bowl? Is it possible?
Totally possible! I think 2-3 is the perfect range to start
@@WorkForAvocados 2-3 foot, ok, and 2 Meters?
@@criscaires6713 the biggest I’ve dropped in on a surf skate was 9 ft, so a little under 3 meters
@@WorkForAvocados Thank you man, your testimony encourages me to evolve, in my city there is a bowl of two meters and there is no access ramp, I need to learn to drop, but even with the fear of falling face down on the ground, you showed me that it is possible, thank you for your feedback...
