I’m doing all mistakes. Thanks for the great explanation. I love that you’re doing the mistakes as well. It’s easier to see “average” persons instead of pros who are already skating/ surfing perfectly 😅
Ronja! So stoked to hear that you were able to get information from the video. Even years later I have to go back to watch this video to keep working on mistakes. Hope you're shredding wherever you are in and out of the water
61 years old and have surfed since i was 10. Took a 40 year break from skating but saw the surf skate and started again. I love carving bowls and skate parks when the surf is flat. Love you channel and your stoke. You get what it is about and it’s awesome you are pimpin’ stoke.
You’re an inspiration Derrel! I hope I can be as active as you at that age. I love the freedom that the surf skate gives. The generated speed just creates such unique lines in the environment. Thanks for being rad and I really appreciate the support 👊🏼
57 myself and similar. I lost interest in skating when it went to narrow boards, tiny wheels that didn't roll, and lost any connection to surfing. I used to go everywhere with an '80s Alva pool board. I would tic tac to generate speed without pushing. It was a lot like surfing around town, which is what I wanted. I respected what the new school of skating was doing in the '90s but I no longer had any connection to it. I have bought and sold longboard skates. They always disappointed me. I bombed a big bill road once or twice, but it was a busy road with lots of blind driveways, so I quit quickly due to the genuine risk of death. Surfskating has really rekindled my interest, both in playing asphalt with bigger soft wheels, and now, messing around in transitions on my latest build (which is why I'm watching this).
Surf skate is all about that back shoulder pump. That open shoulder feeling is definitely different from everything we have learned in skating. But that back shoulder pump really gets the flow of the surf skate flow. I like the phrase, "actively getting low." You did an awesome job explaining everything. Always enjoy your narratives. Stay Rad Sir.
Definitely feels like a whole different world. Now that I see the difference it’s hard for me to go back to a more skate style stance. Glad to hear the information was well received! The actively getting low is definitely one of the things I need to work on with flexibility. Thanks for tuning in, have safe travels 🤙🏼
Awesome vid. Other hand, ey? Gotta try that too! What bugs me as a beginner surfskate bowl carver is how we do these crazy things with our arms and shit… then you see a streetskater zooming through the bowl with hardly moving his body at all?! I know bowls are different than these “surf” ramps but tbh I always thought those exaggerated arm movements weren’t nescessary on a skateboard. My surf teacher in France said a surf board is much heavier to manoeuvre in the water, so you need that whole body movement but surfskaters just look silly! 😂 Long story short: This is the first video that brought across the point of surfskate for surf training. Well done buddy, thanks for sharing! 🤙🏻
Totally hear where you are coming from! I think that’s one of the things that stopped me from progressing much sooner. I saw my board doing the motions and making it happen so I assumed I was getting the full value of the practice. I also used to laugh at the over exaggerated movements but now seeing the benefits, I guess I’m going to be one of the silly looking ones myself haha. Thanks for taking the time to comment, glad you enjoyed the video!!

It’s crazy how much of a different plane it puts you in to operate out of. Really feels like from that position, every pump and movement makes a huge difference. Thanks for watching!
For sure! I was watching some other videos of people using chalk and some of them will use different colors as indicators for different speed sections or personal reminders. The limits are pretty endless
The setup was perfect! I’d go back and forth between the pool and skating haha. I think you’d really like a surf skate. They make longer ones that you could use as a mid length trainer. Maybe something in the 34-38” range. Let me know how it goes!
I've noticed when I started to surf skate my surfing progressed, but this thing you mentioned about leading with the back end just melted my brain. Also the slashing of the hand coming down. Will definitively try those soon. Thanks for the pointers!
It really makes you feel like you’re making the most of every movement when you do it that way. Still things I’m working on myself but total game changer. Glad you enjoyed it and found it useful, thank you!

I been riding my Carver for day. Style and body mechanics depends on the person. Like there's no specific direction you need to hold your palms in? I took my board down to da Venice Skatepark today and carved the hell out of everything I could. I honestly didn't feel any real advantage as far as carving goes. My regular set-ups seem to have the same carving abilities, just with a slightly different feel. I will say they are good for generating speed without putting your foot down, I was easily able to s-turn my way down most of the Boardwalk. It's a fun ride. But they do have their limit's...
what an awesome tip about the arms! Does he make any reccomendations for surf skate setups for trainers, e.g. a preference for type of trucks or board shapes? asking as a short boarder
That one was my favorite! Made so much sense and explained a lot. Honestly that is something that we didn’t touch on at all. His board was pretty chipped and beaten up too so I couldn’t even tell you what kind of deck it was. I assume it was some version of a Carver though
That's a ramp? The alley behind my house is nicely concaved, like this ramp. Last time I checked waves come in all sizes. This would be like 1 foot or less surf...best spot I've seen so far for Carvers is the snakerun in Venice.
@@WorkForAvocados 100% agreed. I do the majority of my skating out on the streets. I've always had a sidewalk surfing style. No matter what kind of board I ride. 10-15 years ago kids kinda laughed at my style, it was unique to them. To us older guys it's more natural feeling, because most of us rode them like surfboards way back when we learned. I had taken a 15 year break and didn't realize kids didn't skate like that anymore... But I stuck with the style anyway, on regular boards. I just purchased a small Carver Surfrider yesterday and am headed out to really test it. And have some fun. I had no problem adjusting to it yesterday and carved anything I could, and tested how long I could generate s-turns and keep the board moving without pushing with my foot. Endless once I got it going. I think it's perfect for sidewalk surfing. I wouldn't trade my regular set up for one, but why not add one to the collection. Can't hurt.
If you really wanna learn to surf/skate and with some style. Don't overthink it. It's not surfing. It just resembles it. Concrete banks don't move like waves, so body mechanics will be different. I just bought a small Carver. It took me about a day to master it, I try to ride it like MR surfs. Maybe the almost 50 years of skating that way helped a little? And being from Dogtown. Like Skip said at the 70's Del Mar Skate contest, "Where's my trophy". Lol. When someone told me it was an actual thing I couldn't believe it. That's been my natural skate style, especially when I skate around town, since I was like 8. I'm 56 now. It's always been a part of my surfing routine. Like when there's no waves. It's basically skateboarding without the tricks and pretending you're surfing. I can shred that style on any board though. It doesn't have to have special carving truck's. When I surf/skate I stick with legit surf moves only. No flip tricks or tricks that can't be done on a surfboard.. Right now I'm working on a clean looking frontside 360° on a nice 2-3 foot transition. It's fun as hell because you don't have to paddle anywhere, wait for waves, or be cold, like real surfing.
Is Puro Surf the resort where that surf skate wave is in the video or is the concrete wave somewhere else. I went to his Instagram and I don't see any info on Puro Surf

Yew!!
Waiting on that next swell while the temp drops 😬
Was that the full warmup or could you do a separate vid if poss?
There were a few other exercises and drills I didn’t include because I didn’t want to give away Stanley’s entire program. Best of luck!
Surf skating is different. You gotta face hips forward , get your back arm out front, and look where you want to go .
Is there anymore video on this with training from this surfer
I don’t believe he has his own , but if you are ever in El Salvador check him out at Puro Surf!
Is Puro Surf the resort where that surf skate wave is in the video or is the concrete wave somewhere else. I went to his Instagram and I don't see any info on Puro Surf
IS THAT THE CX OR THE C5? AND WHAT SIZE WHEELS?
what type of trucks are you using?
In this I’m using the Carver C5s
