Read engine, ABS, and TCU codes on a 2005-2009 Legacy Outback without a code reader

  • Got a CEL light on but don't have a code reader? 2005-2009 Legacys and Outbacks have one built into the cluster. 2005s need a white diagnostics connector hooked up to work. It's tucked inside the fuse panel just inside the drivers (LHD) door by your knee. It may possibly be wrapped in (blue?) tape. There is a pair of green connectors as well but those aren't needed for this.
Once the white connectors are joined put the key in the ignition, turn the key to on, and press the trip button that's just below the gas gauge once while the gauges start sweeping. Any stored codes will be displayed in the odometer display.
2006-2009 have a slightly different method. Link describing how to use that here: www.subaruoutback.org/forums/9...

It is so hard to find videos for this engine. You are a hero, Donald.

For 2005 outback xt at least, they are there but they are really tucked up in there. They are paired with the green connectors he was talking about

I wish I knew this when I had my 2005 Outback, it would have been so handy!

Sometimes those wires can be found below the glovebox.

Thanks man! I was wondering if these were similar to my 1992 legacy and has connectors to plug in to read codes

Brilliant thank you. Worked for my 05 Legacy 2.51 but there were no codes in memory even tho CEL had been earlier that day

08 Outback XT. Not seeing these connectors. Also looking at FSM I see nothing. My green test mode connectors are on passenger side kick panel by ECU. Same as when I had 05 OBXT. Still looking for a way to read ABS codes. In the fuse panel area the FSM shows 181 and 182 as a "short connector". I found it and one of the plugs is a loop of wire connecting the other 2 wires of the other plug.. Like it's name indicates. Not sure the purpose of this but it looks similar and in a similar location to what you're showing in this video.

I have a 2005 Subaru Outback. I don't see the white connectors to connect. Do I need to remove the panel underneath the fuse panel (by unscrewing the screw holding it in place)?

yes, Its much easier to access the interior of the fuse panel when removing the lower dashboard panel under the steering wheel. Yes, there are indeed 2 sets of green and white connectors located there, both sets are taped together with blue coloured tape. ( 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0L H6 )

These 2 white connectors you speak of do not exist in my 2005 Outback. I have 1 White connector and 1 Green connector.

They are tucked away above the fuse panel. There will be 2 sets of a green and a white connector taped together. It's there just dig around for it.

    • @solaron99

YES!... there are indeed 2 sets of green and white connectors (1 Female set and 1 Male set... each set of connectors are taped together with blue coloured tape ). Inside the fuse box area of my 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0L H6 with 5 speed Automatic Transmission.
Its much easier to access the interior of the fuse panel when removing the lower dashboard panel under the steering wheel. Connected the white connectors together and received my error codes. Thank you for indicating this!

It helps to remove the left side panel that is normally facing the door. You can see the connectors taped in there then.
