Subaru Check Engine Light Lit And Cruise Control Light Flashing Fix

  • If you have a Subaru, and the cruise control light is flashing and the check engine light has come on, this video shows what can be causing it. The most common cause of a Subaru check engine light being on with the cruise control light flashing is a loose or missing fuel cap. In my case, someone lost the gas cap on my car, which caused the check engine light to come on and the cruise control light to flash. When this happens, there is nothing wrong with your cruise control. Tightening the gas cap, or replacing it will fix the problem, and the lights will eventually go out while you are driving. Watch this video if you want to know how to fix w Subaru with the check engine light lit and the cruise control light flashing.
Here's where you can get a Subaru repair manual:

Thank you. Just filled up my 2012 WRX on a 33 / 91 degree day. Took car to hand wash, super humid inside. Engine, traction lights on and Cruise flashing after car wash. Removed gas / petrol cap, pressure release evident, start car, no more warning lights. Cheers, JAYTEE

Thanks! This post and the comments helped me go from panic to calm after a bit of work. Cleaned and tightened down my gas cap. Started engine and still saw the flashing cruise and constant check engine lights as well as that skidding car icon. Opened the hood, disconnected the ground cable from the battery for a short while. Reconnected that then started up the engine to see things back to normal. Sure am grateful for resources like this versus the "old days" where I might have been forced to take it to the dealer and believe what they diagnosed was the problem. Surely Subaru could add a "check your gas cap" message or icon.

Pro Tip: If you loose your gas cap, go to a large gas station like QT. Tell them you left your cap their a day or two ago. They usually have a shoe box with 4 or 5 caps in it. Take the box to your car and use the one that fits. Don''t believe me, ask next time you get gas just to see.

These 3 same dash lights appeared, the codes all read to airway : intake issues, I replaced the air filter & cleaned the mess sensor as it was dirty , I was low on oil, I also put in some fuel injector cleaner & I drove away dash light free : wasn’t the fuel cap for me !

Reconnect battery terminals and proceed to idle relearn procedure. Took my engine light and flashing cruise away immediately in 06 forester, I Disconnect overnight .Cheers

There are several things that could be causing this. I did a fairly extensive search:
    1. Go to a good autoparts store that will use a code reader to plug into your car, for free. (Autozone is one). Get that code, write it down. Do a search for the code.
    2. There's a fuse that can blow, causing this. Sometimes happens after you swap the battery, or a deep freeze/heat wave. Finding the right fuse can be tricky.
    3. Try unplugging your + battery cable. Wait a few minutes. Put your foot on the brake (to drain any last power lingering). Wait a few minutes. Plut the battery + cable back in. Start the car.
There are several check engine light triggers that also nix the cruise control. Cat converter, O2 sensors, fuel sensors, many more. Go back to #1 above.

The brute force way to reset it by disconnecting the battery negative terminal. It forces the diagnostic system to reset its state, which causes the lights to go off. Also, the cap may just be not screwed on correctly. This also triggers the engine light.

I’m not complaining and I’m grateful I can get to work but let’s just say I’m trying to save up to have a car that won’t be dangerous to drive. They said it was safe to drive for now but definitely look into getting a new car within the next year or so.
I took it to dealer and they fixed the drive belts and some steering issues and I’ll have it taken in eventually for the 60,000k service just for added comfort and to last me the rest of the year but I will not be saving it unfortunately :( it’s such a nice car and the interior is almost mint condition. If anyone sees this comment & has any experience with pretty much any of it please let me know if there was any solution to any of the issues. I’m at my wits end & have given up. Luckily it’s paid off…..ha…😑 I’ve had this issue for the longest time. Car drives normal but the traction control light & ABS light come on every time I turn my 2011 Impreza hatchback on and drive for a few hundred meters. They come on at the same time typically when I tap the brakes. I gave up after all my interior lights won’t work, the lock/unlock fob on my keys doesn’t work for god knows why. Checked fuses, googled for days while wanting to pull my hair out couldn’t fix anything & became so frustrated feeling like I’m missing something. And to top it off a few weeks ago my check engine light started coming on with a flashing cruise control light but the engine sometimes acts like it’s not getting power…(which I’ve had this issue before upon changing the air filter but it eventually goes away) but after driving for a minute there is I believe a clicking noise when u press the gas but after a little bit, it drives completely normal. However the lights all stay on so idk. Lemme know I’m copy n pasting this to multiple vids in hopes that someone can help. If not thx anyways.

note to mechanic... when someone is holding a camera filming you, tell the truth. Just kidding this is obviously staged because a dishonest mechanic would not have answered any question while somebody was filming. ( proof, the camera is moving the whole time. If it was hidden it would not be moving )
