Subaru’s GENIUS Way to Check (and erase) ABS Codes

  • Subaru designed a GENIUS way to read and erase ABS codes in their vehicles. This DiY video walks you through all the steps involved, including (1) how to read, (2) how to interpret, and (3) how to erase ABS codes using only the diagnostic components Subaru included on every vehicle from the factory. This DiY video applies to all 1993-2001 Subaru Impreza models, however, Subaru used this diagnostic approach for many other models over the years, so this video actually has a much broader application across the entire platform.
This video highlights many of the factory procedures that Subaru published in their technician guide manuals. I’ve archived all of these manuals as PDF documents that you can access on the www.SubaruONLY.com webpage - check it out for more detailed information, including a table of all Subaru ABS fault codes.
This video is part of a "Build Series" (see "Playlists" tab for all videos) for my 1998 Rally Blue Pearl RSTi Coupe (Impreza 2.5RS swapped with a EJ205 turbo engine), which is 1 of only 720 sold in the USDM for 1998. This RSTi Build has come a long way and includes a full archive of videos documenting how to: (1) Pull a EJ-series turbo engine, (2) Replace the head gaskets, (3) Add key upgrades to increase long-term reliability, and (4) Restore the interior to OEM specifications.

ABS sensors, one of rhem or more, need replacement. To perform hard reset, disconnect positive yerminal to battery, wait 5 minutes, hook back up. Depress brake pedal to remove any built up electricity, then turn key to on position, but don't start. After 5 minutes, start car. This will buy you some time to finx problem sensor and replace. Factory sensors are about 135 bucks apiece, usually sold in pairs. I used after market sensors for 35 to 40 bucks a pair

It went a full week and several hundred miles after the replacement, which was better, but now is doing it more often again. I'm hoping the fact I used cheap Chinese sensors isn't the problem. Make sure you always put your gas cap on tight, and that it is clean and fits well. That will trigger a bunch of lights and codes too. Not changing the oil often enough will trigger it too.

The procedure for later models is even more confusing. For most 05-09 it's this mess.
Starting condition: key off, headlight switch off.
Steps 1 through 7 must be performed within 10 seconds.
      1. Turn key to ON position. This is the normal running position, the click just before starting, when all the lights on the dash come on, but before you twist to START. Don't start the engine!
      2. Within 3 seconds, turn the headlight switch ON.
      3. Press the Trip/Odometer button 4 times.
      4. Turn the headlight switch OFF.
      5. Press the Trip/Odometer button 4 times.
      6. Turn headlight swtich ON.
      7. Press Trip/Odometer button 4 times. At this point, the DTC display will begin.
      8. Turn headlight switch OFF. Not necessary for the procedure, but your display may be dimmed and hard to read in bright sunlight. Besides, why drain the battery?
I believe you do it 3 times instead of 4 for steps 3 and 5 to pull airbag codes instead. Crazy, but it works. It then gives you numeric error codes which are actually 2 parts and you have to piece them together from the FSM to make sense of them. It's pretty wild, hahaha.

Hi I need help with my subaru legacy 2000. It will turn over UT not start I've been trying for a year and a half n is. I've replaced everything with the fuel line and pump. On the I/M readiness it shows: DTC 0, PD DTC 0, MIS green check, FUE green check, CCM green check, cat red x, HCAT 0, EVAP red check, AIR 0, 02S X, HRT X. could you possibly know what that's means or point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Hmmm, sorry to hear!! Love that model though. I don’t know off the top of my head, but I’d get a tool to verify spark is working at the plugs (they have inline tools that verify this). Spark issue is pretty common. Then verify the fuel is making it to the cyl. Good luck!!! 👍

Does it matter which of the pins you use? Is there a different function for each of them?

Hi, for those loose pins leads, you can use either one. Just got to install it in location #6. Cheers!

I will pay money for someone to show me where this connector/pins are in my car. I've got the bottom panel off. I've looked for 30 minutes. Untaped bundles. Can't find anything like this. It's a 2007 Subaru Impreza (sedan). Is there something different or another procedure with this model??

@@SubaruONLY No, never found it. I feel that I did give it a pretty good go at looking for it. In the end, I sucked it up and just bought a scan tool that reads more things (like ABS) than just check engine stuff. It quickly pinpointed the problem(s). But I appreciate the video you made!
