    I have SRAM Rival eTap with the power meter crank and absolutely love it. I'm picky and yet have zero complaints with it, as it's all thoughtfully designed and engineered.
    It really seems to be a superior product over the more expensive Shimano, which already seems outdated.

    I prefer Shimano in the aesthetics/ergonomics department. For starters there is a tactile difference between the two buttons and you can feel it so I don't think it would be a problem with gloves. Looks sleeker is a plus compared the bulky SRAM counterpart. And the two buttons means that you can shift with only one of your hands which is what I do.

    Nice shirt :) I've been playing with the idea of going electronic. There is no doubt that shifting on electronic is smoother, lighter and looks cleaner but it won't make me faster or significantly improve my rides. This is subjective of course. I ride a lot, including winter with sub -15 temps, rain, wind and gravel are always fun. So for me, mechanical offers the durability and reliability I need with easy on-the-go maintenance in any condition. So I’m sticking with my UT - Dura-Ace mechanical setup and instead I upgraded some key components that make more of a difference for comfort - Saddle: Sella Italia SLR 3D + FSA K-Force Light carbon seat post + some very nice 55-60mm wave full carbon (inc spokes) wheel-set (which already is noticeably better in crosswinds) with ceramic hubs + R2900 Dura-Ace Disc Rotors. Overall this price is higher (much higher inc wheel set) than going electronic, but my ride is more comfortable, smoother and focuses on more time on the saddle. :) Waiting for your KOM vids.

      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      Yeah I agree, I definitely wont be getting any faster from this! Although I'm hoping the lower gear ratios will help with the climbs. I hope the durability is good, I'll be taking this out on some pretty wet and muddy uk paths, we'll see if it's still working well in a year or two!
      The KOM vids will be a long time coming, I've been off the bike for two months so for now it's just a case of getting some fitness back!

    I have Apex AXS. I decided to go 1x because it eas cheaper, and because I'm don't really have crazy hills. I also changed my chainring from 46T to 50T because inwas spinning out in my sprints

      I was very close to buying Apex AXS, all the advantages of 1x seemed worth it to me, and being cheaper is of course a big plus. But I just couldn’t find it in stock anywhere :(

    The 12 speed Shimano Di2 only has 2 cables running from the battery to the FD and RD. The video at around 6:50 you are showing is for the older 11 speed Di2. These had to have another wire running to a smaller junction box which then had another cables going to both shifters. This is not necessary for the 12speed ones, as they are operated 2 coin cell batteries.

    Had AXS for nearly a year now after moving from 10 speed Tiagra 4700 52/36 with 11-36 on the rear. For reference it's very hilly where I live, now I absolutely spin up hills and consequently, down them too as the ratios are so low with my 46/33 crank with 10-30 on the rear. I had an issue with the front mech over shifting and this is mentioned quite a bit online as SRAM don't let you adjust the front mech. It took a lot of tinkering but I think I've finally got it 'right'. A second hand dub power meter was only £80. Brakes are a bit crap as 'turkey gobble' but recommendations are to go for Swissstop 35RS pads which I might do later this year.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      Is the Tiagra hydraulic? I think for me coming from sora the upgrade to hydraulic brakes should be quite an improvement. I have Shimano hydraulics on my mountain bike so it will be interesting to see how the different brakes compare.
      I'm not too worried about speed downhills, hopefully my extra bulk will mean gravity does most of the work 😂

    SRAM has the better wireless implementation, but is heavier. Also Shimano is the de facto standard (~80% are using Shimano). You often need special tools for SRAM (e.g. you can't just run your SRAM wheelset on a kickr, because you need get an XDR freehub first, etc.). Pick carefully because you're most likely going with the same brand on your next bike as well.
    Also wanna mention that there is small delay when shifting with SRAM due to the system also has to detect for simultaneous shifts for the front derailleur.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      That's true, I did have to buy an XDR freehub for my smart trainer, but that was only about £20 so not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

  • @nemixCOD
    @nemixCOD 5 місяців тому +1

    Just a thing to remember, there is no holes to route the cables for internal cables in the domane, so when you choose Shimano, you have a battery in the seat post and the front and rear mech is attached to the battery, so unless you attempt to drill a hole to route the cable to the rear derailleur then you are out of luck, also there is no place for the front either. ( I also attempted to do this with my domane al 2 disc, but its not a viable option) sram is your best bet as the whole system is wireless.
    I was going to attempt to drill my frame for a short period until I get a new bike, however the likely hood of stress fracture is high and will result in frame failure, and you dont want that to happen on the road at speed.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes that's a good point! I did read a bit about frames needing to be di2 compatible. Luckily not an issue with SRAM. I definitely don't have the skills to be drilling a hole through a frame, far too easy to mess something up, and like you said probably not very safe either

    I live in the hills. I have SRAM Rival 46/33 with a 10-36 and the Rival left side power crank. I love the 33-36 gear for the steep hills. I do recommend a K-Edge chain catcher to prevent inside chain drops which did happen once in a while. After that was installed, no more issues. Buy a Sram bleed kit - easy to do yourself and will save a bunch of $$$ over a bike shop.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      Nice one, I'll see how it goes with the chain drops and if I have any problems I'll definitely check out the K-edge. Bleed kit is on the way, I'm going to install the whole thing myself so hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult for a first timer!

    Don't you already own a Magene powemeter? And you probably need a new Bottom Bracket since the spindle is wider. And just a comment on the buttons on Shimano, being electronic. You can control how you want the buttons to behave, and using synchronous shift you only need two buttons to gear through the whole range. So you can have up and down shift on one shifter, or you can have up one one side and down on the other.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      Oh good point about changing how the buttons behave, I completely forgot to mention that. I'm going to move my magene power meter to my really old bike and use that for rides where I'll be locking my bike up outside.

  • @JohnSmith-ox7xc
    @JohnSmith-ox7xc 5 місяців тому

    I would never be able to lock my bike up outside if I had an electronic groupset on it. I'm surprised you didn't cover app or software useability. AFAIK one thing that puts me off and I don't know if it's true or not, is that Di2 11 speed won't work with Di2 12 speed and vice versa. IMO any electronic groupset should work with any speeds and the app should at minimum allow you to microadjust the "pull" at each shift.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      I'll probably make a video about the app and other things once it's arrived and I've spent some time tinkering. Yes I also read that Shimano 11 and 12 speed aren't compatible. It seems quite ridiculous and it is definitely just a software limitation they put in to force people to upgrade to newer models. Some of the cheap chinese electronic groupsets allow their rear derailleurs to work with however many gears you want.

    I have used Sram and Shimano cassettes on the same wheelset for years, you should get a new cassette for the Sram derrailler but that's about it. Go for SRAM

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      sram cassettes can be used on shimano hubs if the smallest cog is 11t, but if you want to use a 10t sram cassette you need to change it to an xdr freehub

    I just picked up a new gravel bike with SRAM Etap Apex electronic 1x12spd and I absolutely love it! Even though the Apex is the lowest model in SRAM's lineup (Apex, Rival, Force, Red), it doesn't feel cheap at all. I also love the battery on SRAM's, you can easily carry a spare with you just in case, can't do that with Shimano. Go SRAM!

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому +1

      I agree 100% about the batteries, a lot easier to just have a few spares lying around in case. With shimano's seat tube battery if you forget to charge you have no option but to wait hours for it to charge!

    🤔 are you sure you have to change the hubs as I use a SRAM cassette on my 105 gearing 11 speed. Are the splines different on the 12 speed cassettes now? And I think the Shimano 12 speed cassettes don't fit 11 speed hubs too. Just a thought

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому +1

      From what I gathered online if you want to run SRAM with a smallest cog being an 11 tooth then it will work fine on a Shimano hub. But if you want to have a 10t smallest cog then you need to change to an XDR driver

    I will not switch to any electronic brand, due to simple facts, in the long term, and weather conditions, (temperature, rain, etc) all these gadgets will stop working, and batteries will be flat within 2-3 hours. It's been proven by many cyclist. Mechanical is the King! You can fix it quickly, it isn't influenced by weather, no batteries. Shimano, and Campagnolo has developed perfect mechanical 11-12 speed groupsets, which are easy to maintain and affordable. HAving Shimano you can use any other components, mix and match with Rotor, and Sram etc.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  5 місяців тому

      I hope it lasts a few years at least!
      With the electronic groupsets there's one feature that I really care about, especially when it comes to making videos, which is I can overlay my shifting data onto the videos. Probably quite a niche feature for normal people but if it wasn't for that I probably would've stuck with mechanical!
