  • Korean Reacts To: Uncle Roger & Auntie Hersha in Chinatown + MUKBANG
In this video, I react to @mrnigelng 's Uncle Roger taking @Hersha Patel to London's Chinatown! No egg fried rice in this video, but yummy Asian pastries instead :) After watching their video, I was so curious to try them for myself so I included a small mukbang at the end 😋

As someone who works in medicine, I always have to do this when I hear people mention that MSG is unhealthy. I saw someone write a comment on your first Uncle Roger video, but still.
Msg isn't unhealthy, the whole thing started with some journalist saying it caused a headache when he ate Chinese food. It was disproven in many studies, it isn't unsafe, salt for example can be dangerous in high doses, nutmeg and cinnamon are carcinogens (You'd need to eat a 25 kilo sack in one sitting for it to have effect), alcohol is also a carcinogen.
Use MSG if you want! If you like the taste and it helps you cook better, go right ahead!
Tomatoes have a lot of MSG in them naturally, so if it was unhealthy, I doubt there would be 100+ year old Italian nonnas to make gnocchi videos today.
Also, if someone says ''but it's a chemical, you shouldn't put chemicals in your food!'', nope, everything is a chemical, and chemicals don't care if they naturally occur or are manmade. They don't have feelings. Enjoy your MSG!

@@user-km7vy7ch7i Well comparing something that was studied extensively to a time where living 50 years was extraordinary is a bit unfair. If MSG was proven to be unsafe, I wouldn't eat it or recommend people to eat it. But it is proven to be safe, so I see no problem consuming it.
What I do have a problem with is people that say it is unsafe, and that it eats brains and other ridiculous stuff.

Yes Nigel himself was married. He devorced and separated as good friends since being a uprising comedy star is such time consuming. There was no space for a relationship anymore. However, his character Uncle Roger, who is a devorced one too, needs these stereotype lines to show that he has learned from his mistakes in the past, that he is actually trying to improve himself. Thats why he often shows his flaws which were that worse that his spouse left him. But he also plays an character who is still stuck in stereotypes of men and do not want to understand why certain attitudes are wrong. In that way many men can relate with him and laugh about themselfs, in that way even many women can relate with Uncle Rogers stories and giggle , either because they agree or they see their attitude may need to be re-evaluated.

In China sometimes the supermarkets keep the rice in big tubs with no lid on, so the customers can scoop however much rice they want. When we buy rice we'd grab a handful and inspect the rice, but as kids we like to stick a hand in the tub to feel the rice flow around😆Kinda like smacking rice packs, which is very typical as well😁

The holes in that sieve are small enough to retain the food but too big for the oil to form a film bridging them, so that the oil drains properly, unlike the ones sold in mainstream kitchen stores with small holes.

The cupcake and wife cake are my favorite. That said, it's been a long time since I've found a wife cake that lives up to my childhood memories of it. The filling is candied winter melon, and I prefer it with recognizable chunks with sesame seeds, but most bakeries these days turn it into a sticky paste or goo, which is not the wife cake of my memories. The cupcake is usually the same type of "egg cake" that bakeries make in larger form for parties and such - eggy, not too sweet, and light/spongy.

My mum and I slap the bag of rice always when we buy. I usually use that age-old technique to check whether there is no hole or opening in the bag, if there is, upon good slapping, you will see the rice coming out. We slap it around a bit(not too much or it would seem awkward in the store) and check it full, not just slapping on one side, little bits about the bag. I also use it when buying bag of flour or bag of sugar(both sugar and flour, we take in big bags like that), quite an effective method. So, we use slapping to check if the bag is alright or not. And it does work(at least worked for me and my mum), when there is a leakage in the bag. But I see many people have forgotten the reason and proper method to do it, and just slap it offhandedly like a meaningless ritual, just like Uncle Roger.
Sometimes the bag has dust upon it, by slapping, you remove the dust, so some people use it in that way too, I use it that way also. Because we have to hold the rice in hand when going home, so dusty one would dirty the clothes. And when clothes get dirty, you mum beats you.

Slapping the rice sack helps to determine the quality of the rice.

Some Chinese restaurants requires giant size cooking utensils when they host banquets, most commonly Chinese wedding dinner can up to few hundreds pax. Giant size wok and other cooking utensils allows the chefs to cook the same dishes more effectively and quickly, while having low manpower, to be served to 100 guests. Of course, chefs with strong arm strengths are required to master them.

3:27 This is a strange but true phenomenon 😂 people in my home town do this especially if they are about to carry it, and people don't even know they do it, it's a second nature to almost everyone.
My guess is that it is one way to feel or validate that it definitely contains rice and not a counterfeit.
It will probably sound different if it contains anything but rice, or dusts or other substance will come out if the vendor added anything nasty to add some volume to it to try and sell more of them.

I prefer the Portuguese tarts, too, esp the black caramelised bits. The Chinese also make a different type of egg tart, the ones sold at dim sum restaurants. Don’t know what its called in Chinese but these have different pastry from the Portuguese eggs tarts and are not the same. Its possibly called egg custard tarts in English

Actually they are called Portuguese tarts as well in china and taste basically the same. The Portuguese brought that to Macau during colony time, from where it became popular all across the country. However some of them may not be authentic outside Macau so go there if you wanna try the good ones (or the ones from KFC if you are in mainland China lol)

At 3:20, that's Guizhou style chili oil from Guiyang (the provincial capitol of Guizhou) - the lady who founded that brand uses her old family recipes, and I don't think that she even finished high school due to the Cultural Revolution...
Good chili oils and the like - even the flavors that I don't like so much are well made...

going to an Asian market, and walking by pallets full of rice bags, its almost a necessity to smack the rice bag haha. like uncle roger says, "very satisfying"

Try the mooncake when it’s mouldy and just a bit rancid. an acquired taste, for sure, but tastes better imo.
