Suhr Riot Pedal: REAL ONE VS. $30 FAKE
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лип 2024
- Since its release, the Suhr Riot Distortion pedal has become a go-to, high quality, high fidelity, high gain distortion pedal. So it should come as no surprise that there are knock-off or even counterfeit versions of it. In this video we're going to compare the real $200 pedal to a $30 fake one! Do they look, sound, react the same? Let's find out!

Rubric: -5 points for Danzig references. -5 points for not reading the description. -5 points for not watching far enough into the video to answer your own question. -5 points for misquoting me in your comment. 20 points possible. Everyone starts with an A!
Both sound pretty rad. Time to buy that knock-off pedal, put some new Bernie Ball strings on my Paul Rudd Smith 509, and crank up the old Marshull amp.
Paul Rudd Smith wtflol
Yeah but the Sliver Ski has nothing on my Flanders Strapocastar.
@@presmasterflash7555 Those Strapocastars are nice but I opted for the Jazzblaster.
PRS itself is a Fender/Gibson ripoff brand, so no need to change the name
@@shanewalton8888 this might be the absolute stupidest comment here. At least we had fun with it.
If the opportunity presents itself to do more real vs fake videos, I would enjoy them. Great comparison video. Please keep up the great work!
The Joyo Baatsin has a Riot setting too. I don’t think it has as much gain, but it’s a cool pedal. I liked B better because it had a cleaner, clearer sound.
To be honest, I liked the tone on the knock off better. They were both good, but the knock off had a warmth to it that the real one didn't. The real one sounded more detailed though. If I was looking for a distortion pedal, I'd be happy with either one, but my wallet would be happier with the knock off.
Bet the knock off breaks or completely dies probably during a gig lol
@@ThunderFalcon333 It's actually built pretty well just FYI.
Max, Sir, my best wishes for your 2022 ............there.
The learning is great from your youtube channel. Thanks.
Muchas gracias por el video amigo!
Great playing. Cheers from LimaPerú
it was pretty easy to tell these two apart as while both had the same character of distortion, the real one had a higher quality audio signal coming through. That said, there were moments where the two sounded nearly identical to one another so the makers of the knock off would deserve sincere congratulations were their pedals not blatant knock offs. I mean, they could have simply given it a different but similar name like Mooer and others tend to do and it probably would have been fine. At any rate, great video and please keep 'em coming. In addition to outright fakes, I'd love to see some comparisons between these well known pedals and their more affordable clones. Thanks for all you do and please keep rocking.
Excellent video! Thank you!
Guitar Max rocks, keep bringing us info you are very helpful. 🖤👽
Nicely done keep up the good stuff
Thought they were pretty much identical,, but the fake one sounded warmer and deeper in the very first playing example. Until the reveal, I was pretty sure A was the Suhr. Great video, as usual.
Got me. I listened through pretty decent headphones. I’d buy the expensive one if it could make me play like Maxx.
From the demo it seemed like the $30 had mains hum, but I didn't have a real favorite. I do know that I'd prefer to save $170 though...
Thanks Max.
To my ears, and through quality headphones, the fake one sounded noticeably better than the real one. Also, I like what you said about being "ethical." Which made me think about just how unethical it is to gouge someone for $200 for a piece of metal containing simple wiring and circuitry, just because you can. Imo, the $30 fake sounds better and costs less -- so to hell with "ethics." I have plenty of cash and I'ma get me one of those fakes out of sheer principle.
The $ go for R&D creativity. This is a fairly original circuit, not just a tweaked something.
Better is a subjective word apparently...
@@therightisright8276 yeah, there’s not a $170 difference in sound. May not be as good, but it’s definitely not ‘better’.
@@terryenglish7132 It doesn't really matter if it's an original circuit, most pedal circuits are not patented, so there's really no issue of intellectual properties involved here.
The real ethical question here is copying the look and name exactly of a popular and expensive one, which can potentially enable people to pass them out as real ones to defraud customers who want the real one. If the pedal was made to not look exactly the same and use the same name, then there'd be zero ethical concern.
As for "charging more than the material's worth", that's hardly an ethical concern. You can charge anything however much you want, there's zero ethical problem there because nobody is forced to buy it, it's a free market. The $30 fake doesn't charge you the actual cost of the material (plus labor) either, which probably comes to no more than half of the price tag. In fact, the cheaper labor cost probably warrants ethical concerns since it is made possible due to non-humane labor conditions and/or environmental impacts. So if anything, the cheap pedal probably has more problems in this area.
Exactly.
I heard the difference right from the start, and knew the real one. It was subtle, but it was there. As for having to set the controls differently to get the same sound, you have to do that to any two “identical” pedals due to variations in parts and their tolerances. Just ask Josh Scott and Brian Wampler. Thanks for the good videos.
Disagree. The difference was pretty obvious to me. The real Riot had a much tighter low end. Like a kick you in the face level difference. I started out playing bass so a mushy low end like the fake one had was a dead give away it was cheap. Even on the higher notes where the two sounded very similar there a smal but noticablee gap in clarity.
that is a pretty close competition. i noticed on the fake riot the clippings is a bit harsher, but not that much of a difference. good content Max. keep em coming
I vote for more Real vs Fake videos. Definitely!
Both work but I prefer the multi effect you sampled a few months back. That had 5 or 6 effects that covered everything I need.
The "US Dream" pedals are Suhr Riot clones. They are a great style of distortion. I own the Joyo US Dream and it's pretty good.
The US Dream is a Marshall in a pedal !
@@motorcyclemark2889 no. US dream is Suhr Riot clone. Marshall in a box from Joyo is Joyo JF-16 British Sound. Marshall is from UK.....
Definitely need more real vs fake videos
The Joyo US Dream is a clone of the Riot and very similar looking and sounding without being an out and out copy!
I have one and love it!
Worth checking out!
if you compare the fake one with the Joyo Dream US which is better ??
There is a point on marketing and branding and Suhr defintely puts a lot of dollars into that and it reflects on the price. But there is also the work on research and development of the product. For the most part I couldnt tell the difference on the two pedals, and it is kind of eye opening that a $ 200 pedal can sound the same as a $ 20, but there is also something to be said on the research to create such a product.
Without having seen the demo on its entirety, my vote is for B..the clarity in it is subtle, but it IS noticable..
Great demo! I’ve got a real Suhr Riot and fortunately preferred pedal B :)
Pedal "B" sounds a little more refined. A touch more "High end Product'. But that's just a guess
Great Comparison Test...
It would have been interesting to See the Internal Build Quality of Both.
Thank You for the Review... Cheers AAA
I thought A pedal was the Suhr pedal and was fooled,🤣 they both sounded almost exactly🤔 great 👍 video 📹 ✌🤘
what no link for the chibby??
Great info. How about a guitar review of a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 with Sustainiac . Thanks.
*Fantastic video, Sir! Thank you for sharing this!*
*I would actually love to see more of these "Real vs. Fake" vids but I would hate to see you run the risk of spending money on fake gear for our entertainment and education. That said, if it doesn't bother you, that's cool too and MUCH appreciated.*
*I had wondered if "A" was the fake because it seemed to have a muddier (but not by much) quality. The real Suhr had a sharper clarity, if that makes sense.* 🙂🤘🤘
Thank you for posting this video. It was informative and interesting. Both pedals sounded good and extremely close to me. The Suhr definitely did not sound 7 times better in order to justify the significant difference in cost. Honestly, most people can't afford a $200 distortion pedal, which makes a good sounding $30 distortion pedal very appealing. More of these types of videos would be quite useful. Allowing people to hear and judge for themselves if an alternative cheaper version is for them.
Nice guitar I just seen that brand on andertons UA-cam channel and the plum purple one Lee was playing was amazing looking
Great video; so glad there are more affordable ‘clones’ out there. JOYO makes a Riot clone as well, same knobs, placement, purple case and all; another really hairy pedal at around $30, FYI!
I totally guessed wrong.. Wow.. What happened to your arm? I love this channel. Great video.
Great video! You should do one on the Chinese OCD drive
You should do some podcasts, your voice is so calming
I have a first gen Riot pedal & its my main go to !
I liked the pedal A better, I found the sound warmer and thicker in the bass.
I thought A was the original pedal 🤔😂
SO did I!
Same here 😅
In the 70s you could get a Manshell amp cheap overseas and they were surprisingly good. A friend bought one .
I really could tell it was B months first play.. great sounding pedal🎸🎸🎸
I thought "B" sounded better on every example. Good review and comparison!
I prefer A. Don't know which is which yet. But that's my honest opinion. Thanks Max. I really enjoy these comparisons.
Great video. Maybe I would have liked to hear something with less distortion, and why not, also the differences in the possible use as a crunch.
Mr. Max, Pls send links for Chinese knockoffs of Strymon BigSky and Hologram Microcosm
Never heard of this pedal, but assuming the setting are the same on both, B sounds brighter. Can't wait until the end of the video to see which pedal is which.
Wow! I thought A was a bit dirtier, not as smooth and less sustain, so I'm glad I got it right. I can't see spending 200 on the real one and especially any amount on a fake because you can get a Metal Master or Boss DS1 overdrive/distortion pedal used from GC, pawnshop or craigslist for 50 or 75 bucks all day long.
pawnshops sell a lot of fake pedals, on ebay its the same.
I own a US Dream from Joyo, and it's a Riot clone. It's amazing. Seriously. Amazing.
They sound identical! :O
The noise floor on the knock-off immediately made it obvious the moment it was turned on.
Very similar. Because of hum, I guessed right just from the start. And the real one is more elegant. But the sound - I prefer the fake one 🙂
Where can I buy one of these fake Riot pedals?
Crom is pleased with your shirt
The B pedal had a slightly richer full tone compared to that A pedal knockoff, but if you were to be in a sketchy area doing a gig, I guess it's better to have knockoffs in case of theft, but I do agree that the clear choice is an original, or brand pedal for that matter.
Uh oh, I liked the cheap one more.
Me too I guessed wrong I thought A was the best sounding by far
I don't as much mind products that are obvious imitations or "inspired by" another product, but I avoid these things that cross the line to "counterfeit". Like you said, if I were to purchase one I would get the real thing or another pedal altogether.
There is a 3rd choice, lol, just scrape the pedal name off the fake. Maybe write BIG FAKE on it with a sharpie. Course, then you wouldn't have the extra circuits the Suhr has
Pedal B has a more scooped sound with crisper highs and tighter bottom end.
The difference was huge to my ears.
I agree with the assessment. I don't have $200 for the real Riot, so if I wanted that tone, I would just spend $60 on a ProCo rat and get pretty close.
I would like to see if you could get that sound from just the fender amp alone. I bet you can.
The real Riot voice switch has three positions - left to right, while the fake Riot switch goes up-down. How do the positions match? I mean, real Riot has position 1-2-3 (from left to right); position "1" (i.e. left) corresponds to switch "up" in the fake Riot?
I’ve got a riot and a mosky crazy tone….it sounds exactly the same as the riot but cleans up with my les paul volume knob better. I’m selling the riot asap.
Listened through Bose Headphones on my PC and Recording Studio Sound Card that was Eq'ed Flat the Knock off seemed to have a touch more Muddy sound on the leads how ever in the Rhythm Style playing very close. Perhaps if the levels were really more tweaked it would be closer but the real thing was did I hear 170.00 difference in sound quality not really. Now listening with the Bose plugged into my Samsung Galaxy virtually identical but the Audio Circuitry in a Smart Phone does not touch the quality of the Sound Card in the PC.
Also when I played this video review on my PC I then went back and played with Reverb Hall and Dolby Thx on and gave it a dramatic difference between the pedals. Probably for small Clubs that Knock off would be fine in a Large Hall or Venue on Stage it would sound like the Audio Engineer needs to drop the mids.
This is why 10 Fuzz boxes isn't enough. Pod xt live gets me through the day.
Pedal A!!!..great job
I thought both sounded exactly the same but I heard some noise and humming in the knock-off, but nothing dealbreaker. Only reason I'd not buy it it's a counterfeit and I'd gladly buy this circuit labeled differently
Donner Morpher is what you want.
The middle ground is the Suhr Riot Mini. Same killer tone.
Aug 6, 2023 ____The pedal is now just sold as the DemonFX Solo ...same pedal same color as all the different knockoffs from Joyo etc are that purple/violet type color.
Sempre muito bom 👍
Both sound pretty good. But I could tell by the echo of the fake. Didn’t have the snap to it. Like the real pedal. Cool video.
I too liked the fake one better, luckily I'm not in the market for a high gain pedal.
I guessed right & right away without hearing B....the knock off is a bit thin but still pretty nice
The fake one had a less cleaner sound, but to be honest, is incredible close in sound to the real one
Yeah you could get the similar tone form both pedals but I felt that there was more noise with the fake pedal than the real pedal
I couldn't tell much difference. A noise gate would help. You might try the EVH 5150 overdrive by MXR.
The Riot is awesome in my opinion.
Nice vid, I thought B sounds thicker, richer, more harmonics, more sustain. A sounds like a rehearsal, B sounds like an album
Granted I was listening on my phone but, I actually like the 30 dollar pedal, had a better tone, the orig had more definition/clarity but the cheaper of the two is way more worth the money to me.
"B" has a little more treble. Sounds better to me. Nothing an EQ pedal can't fix. I'd save the $170 and get the knockoff. Then again, I could buy the real one too and send the fake one back in its place and get my $200 back. 😁
The biggest giveaway is the hum on the fake. Other than that the fake is a very usable pedal.
Close, both have their places I guess. I just don't like distortion that is only from a pedal. Good video.
Really liked the fake over the real. Awsome
I thought A was the more expensive one but I'm just a guitar novice. I love that guitar though.
thumbs up for purple pedals regardless of tone
..but green guitar, with purple pedals.. hmm may have to ponder these fashion choices ..
*hair flip*
Pedal A has the lower end and Pedal B has the higher end of mid ranges yet you could tone in with a mixer on the pedal B and it will come closer for the pedal A it will sound at it's finest as well there
I like the concept of real vs. fake
I correctly identified them. The real pedal sounds better. The fake pedal sounds good enough. They were quite similar.
I guessed right! The real pedal sounds articulate and clean. The knock off sounds to muddy and muted.
Cloning circuits is a practice with a long history that I can't fight against but I'd rather not get a counterfeit, largely because I don't want those entering the secondary market. The two sounded mostly the same, the real having a bit more top. Either way, I'll probably stick with my fuzzlord Fet120 for my distortion sounds because I like a sound that'smore sludgy than icyhot.
I've been using the Riot for quite a lot of time. When I was listening to the comparison I felt like the correct pedal was the Riot cause it felt more gritty if that makes any sense, but... I liked the sound of the copy more. I also have a Joyo US Dream and I also like it's sound more :( and yet I use the Riot, I guess I'm just a snob :(
I didn’t know mine was fake til after I bought it at guitar center
Ok I'm paused at 5:08 so I don't know which one is real and which is fake yet, but I can definitely say I prefer the sound of pedal B! Pedal A is not that far behind though. It'll be interesting to see which is which!
Edit: Ok, so the one I liked better is the official one! Question is though, would I spend $170 more to have that improvement in the sound when I can come close and save so much money...maybe could even use some Eq and get even closer.
I haven't watched through to the end yet, but I'll be damed if I can tell which is "better". I sort of prefer "B", but if I have to really concentrate to tell any difference at all, what's that extra $150 getting me, exactly? It's a great time to be a guitar player!
I like pedal B but it was a close comparison. Makes you wonder why the Suhr is almost 7 times the price. You could buy six of the knock off and it achieves a close comparison for a much lower price. When looked into further I would suspect Suhr uses higher end components and it would have been interesting to have seen if that were the case.
These differencies were made specially for not being blamed in making a counterfeit.
Both pedals have the same schematics. As a pedal maker I would say that the original Riot's parts cost is near 30$
The fake one sounds great! Compared to the real one. I really couldn't tell
Wow, both are really close. I would have guessed "A" to be the real one.
No link for the fake pedal? 😉
I just bought friedman be od. Greatest pedal so far. Internal switch to add on extra gain if needed. It's got a (tight) knob. 🔥 📛 👨🚒 🚒 🧯 🎆
... why do I like A more? It just sounded so much more crisp.
I liked "B" before I knew which pedal was demo'd
I preferred the sound of the fake version more but in a song, I doubt I'd be able to notice any kind of difference. I'm surprised they tried to make it a counterfeit while barely putting any effort into making it look like the real thing. I'm sure this is just one of the many other clones that are already available but with the Suhr branding on it.
