I have a Suhr Riot and can say with 100% honesty that it singlehandedly converted me into a Suhr fan. Everything about the pedal is just fantastic. Makes my George Benson HRD sound like a gain monster
Given the choice between the 2 of them, I would choose the 5150. It has EVERYTHING I ever wanted in my high gain tone, and blows everything else I have away 90% of the time!
They both sound sick. I have Suhr pups in my 7620 and I don't like them [came with the guitar when I bought it]. The pedal on the other hand sounds awesome. The EVH too. It's now on my list to buy. Thanks mate.
These two pedals sounded totally different to my ears. I can see having them both but if I had to pick one it would be the 5150, I'm a sucker for that smooth compressed drive. Plus that harmonic is killer.
I honestly don't hear much of a difference in gain over UA-cam. The only major difference to my ears was that the EVH seemed to have more mids. Great job on Crazy Train BTW. P.S. I don't get why someone would thumbs this down.
I gotta say, the "fattness" on the suhr definitely impressed me. From a pure tone standpoint, that has to be the better of the two IMO. I love Mxr and the noisegate looks appealing, but that thicker tone just sounded better to me.
Great Review Philip new to your channel so catching up on all your vid's. I have the 5150 it's been a struggle to get the tone i wanted but i think i have found what i was looking for and will keep it. Had to tweak my amp a little to fatten up those notes but it can be done. one of the only drawbacks of the unit that i see.
do you run this pedal as a pre amp or in the effects loop? i have mine set as a pre amp but i am very new to this and it looks like you have it run through the back
I've got a P2 sir.. I use it as a standalone preamp into an fx return of my 50w marshall.. completely avoiding the front of the amp.. into a orange 4x12.. it sounds better than the 5150 amp I had.. no kidding :D .. it just somehow paired well with the EL34 based power amp section and it sounds almost like a modded marshall/bogner?! I had 5150, 6505+, EVH5150III 100w, mesa mark4, mesa mark 5.. and my current set up costs a third of some of the forementioned amps and it sounds twice better for me at least (playing alternative rock/metal , 7 string 1527 ibanez guitar etc.)
+SandStormer Pedal advice is always a crap shoot because everyone has their own tastes, so take this for what it is. A Tele is one of my main guitars, and I love the Cmatmods Butah. Low gain, but very natural sounding. It works on it's own, or as a boost to another drive pedal.
I gotta respectfully disagree the ODC is an overdrive My MXR EVH is definatley a distortion pedal..and I've owned the sure riot as well .I can get Tom petty outta my OCD but noway with the evh or riot though with my volume down I can kina get there.:)
I have one of the first ones ever made on my board, and I absolutely love it through my main stage rig, but I liked the 5150 better for practicing at home, quiet.
I wasn't sold on the EVH but now I am. Thanks for doing this. Joe (not the one who asked the question)
i must admit, that i am just in love with the suhr riot, and is just soooo dang good and i am sooo happy i own it !!!
Both pedals sound like they have their advantages but I do like the noise gate and harmonics on the EVH 5150.

Both impressive, but I'm giving the EVH a slight edge. Noise gate pushed it over the finish line for me.
Given the choice between the 2 of them, I would choose the 5150. It has EVERYTHING I ever wanted in my high gain tone, and blows everything else I have away 90% of the time!
Ozzy and Skid Row? My morning just got better.

The harmonics on the EVH are impressive. Do either of these pedals work well as a boost to a somewhat driven amp?
I honestly don't hear much of a difference in gain over UA-cam. The only major difference to my ears was that the EVH seemed to have more mids. Great job on Crazy Train BTW.

I have been thinking of just added a noise gate and that way I use the other pedals more. I love my Suhr.
Awsome review man! Thank you! Nice riffs!!!

Awesome EVH kicks ass..thanks for the review man
Suhr had a nice fat tone, but I think the versatility of the EVH (higher gain, better harmonics, noise gate) makes the EVH the winner for me.
Congrats on the views!
Hey Phil. Awesome channel!!! What are your top 2 Distortion pedals? Include a pedal for metal. Booyaa!!!
Wow! I thought the Suhr sounded like it had more distortion than the 5150. Maybe it was the highs? or just my ears lol Great video! Thanks
The Suhr sounded darker...I bought the EVH 5150 a month ago and like it, but when you (Phillip) play through the Suhr I second guess my purchase...
Great video mate! I thought the EVH sounded tighter overall.
dang it'd be awesome if you did a comparison of these two and the Friedman pedal
Well, I like more the Riot. I just preferred how the mids sound.
Mr. McKnight...
I was wondering if you can demo the Super Crunch Box V2 ?
I like very much your views on distortion pedals.
Have you done a review of your new Princeton yet?? Would love to see that!
not yet. will be soon. Im just getting to know her take her on a date or two. LOL
If you get your hands on the new Blues Cube Hot...I'd love to hear that one too.
The Joyo Us Dream (I believe) is a Riot clone. May have to look into that...
5150 wins. More clarity and better harmonic overtones.
If you can't afford either try to find an old MK I Marshall Guv'nor :-)
Hey Phil, did you ever try the riot reloaded? Is it worth the extra $$$ over the original?
I also asked you the other day about bridge saddles and I didn't get an answer yet it's been about 3-4 days ago.
The EVH has much better note articulation and definition. The Suhr sounds anemic and brittle.
Can you demo the Super Crunch Box V2 vs the Riot? That would be interesting.
The EVH is so much better, just for the gate.
I like the compression more with the evh.
Hi Phil. What do you think of putting a MXR 5150 in front of a Bugera V5?
Do you own the Suhr Eclipse? How does it compare to the EVH?
hey Phil how about a comparison of Friedman be od and suhr riot?
Wondering your thoughts on that 68 reissue amp your using?
hea Phil mabe you know. why does a reverb pedal cost more than most all of the other ones?
I see there's a Krank Distortus Maximus in your board as well. Any thoughts on how that pedal compares to these two?
I like it a lot. might have to do a shoot out
Please do! :)
do you run this pedal as a pre amp or in the effects loop? i have mine set as a pre amp but i am very new to this and it looks like you have it run through the back
mxr 5150 or amt p2 which is better sir?

5150 all the way.
Pronounced "Sir"
Suhr Riot the best
Does anyone know of a really good uncompressed vintagey overdrive? I have fender telecaster and I want something good for that classic type of sound.
+SandStormer Pedal advice is always a crap shoot because everyone has their own tastes, so take this for what it is. A Tele is one of my main guitars, and I love the Cmatmods Butah. Low gain, but very natural sounding. It works on it's own, or as a boost to another drive pedal.
I'll stick with my ts-808
The suhr sounds better to me.
But Phil, the Riot is a distortion pedal and the EVH is an overdrive pedal, so I don´t think this is really legit...
I gotta respectfully disagree the ODC is an overdrive My MXR EVH is definatley a distortion pedal..and I've owned the sure riot as well .I can get Tom petty outta my OCD but noway with the evh or riot though with my volume down I can kina get there.:)
Suhr riot by a mile
Mxr 5150 vs real 5150
I am the 69th comment
Suhr Riot sounds better to me
Slow your vibrato way down
Never heard Suhr pronounced "Sewer" lol
Both decent pedals. But I think the Cmat Mods Brownie blows them both away.
Cmat is defiantly badass
I have one of the first ones ever made on my board, and I absolutely love it through my main stage rig, but I liked the 5150 better for practicing at home, quiet.
