I started d&d back in 1984, back in Toronto, learning how to play at 12 in Saturday morning schools that were popular at the time (they were free schools where kids could learn things like photography, computer programming as well as book clubs and get tutoring). I remember spending all my money on the player's handbook, the dm's guide and the monster manual (the basics) and eventually campaign books. It was EVERYTHING to my childhood....until I discovered girls 3 years later. Still, it holds a special place in my heart.
As someone who started playing in 1st edition and had to deal with Satanic Panic, and all the stereotypes my whole life. Just thinking about how popular this game has become makes me feel so vindicated. I love it so much.
back in 2014 I was a senior in high school, when 5e came out. I had no money, none of the core rules, just paper, pencils, and imagination. Thanks to the base rules being free I bought a d20 and my friends and I made it work. 6 years later now, I run a weekly game for 6 players who became some of my best friends, through this hobby. Thank you WOTC for making it so easy and accessible, you've earned a lifelong customer.

It’s the greatest game ever made its that simple. The amount of great memories and friends I’ve made playing this game is endless. No better feeling than sitting down with friends or strangers and creating a new and fun world
It seems like a majority of the most creative people in the entertainment industry now played DnD when they were kids, or still play today. Makes sense since some of the most interesting and creative stuff is being done nowadays (along with the garbage that is always present).
This makes me unbelievably happy, and yet horribly sad at the same time. I absolutely love playing D&D. A few close friends and I had a campaign going for over a year, but then work schedules changed and we haven't been able to play for longer than that. I cant bring myself to find a "public" campaign, because I'm scared of not being able to get along with the people playing.
This is definitely what got me into D&D and LARP. I don't regret it one bit. My friends and I are currently world building and it's such a great experience. We're setting up the new world to be the future of our current campaign (as in our next campaign). Great memories and feelings.
I haven't started a campaign yet, but I have made a character and am supposed to start one at my friend's house this Friday. Erik Evenwood: Draconic speaking human warrior
I am starting Oct 11 and man has it been some of the most fun creating my character. I hope your first session went well! - Barusha "the Bruiser" the Orc Barbarian
I remember reading a study some years ago that seemed to show that individuals that participated in any role-playing game were better at thinking their way out of problems and that it showed up in their work.
"People crave face to face interaction." Actually this is very true. So much is done via the computer or phone now-a-days, that sometimes it's fun to just be with friends and play an exciting game together.
I'm 42, I've grown up with the Internet and computers. By some standards I'm practically a luddite, I have no social media, still buy all my music on CD or vinyl, no longer play video games, and I'm returning to my interest in traditional games like chess, D&D and wargames. I think it's my experience with technology which makes me distrust it so much. I've used dozens of different operating systems, gone through dozens of computers, I have a shelf of obsolete hard drives,. I have lost all kinds of data, I have had hard disks crash on me, and have seen how anything more than 5 years old on the Internet vanishes or becomes impossible to find. I have no great memories from any of the time I've spent online, but still remember D&D sessions from high school (American: middle school) 30 years ago. That's why I'm returning to the hobby.
That’s, no joke, exactly what got me interested in d&d. Literally watched it for like the tenth time yesterday. This video actually reminded me of it, so I can’t emphasize enough, go watch that video.
I started playing when I was 12, my dad got a group of my nerdy socially awkward friends and gave us a battered version of 2nd edition. 16 years later I still play with that group of friends every 2nd Saturday.
One of my absolute favorite things about D&D (aside for my massive hard-on for fantasy settings) is how welcoming the community is. Everyone I've met has been so eager to show others the game and get them into it. Their love of the game really shows and is just so contagious it makes you want to try it
I started watching critical role just before the rise of campaign 2, and I could have never imagined so many people around me now all knowing about dnd and the show. Also, thanks for this video- seriously, I cried multiple times.
I kid you not I was just finally looking into getting the 5th edition books to start my own little D&D adventures with my friends... the timing of this vodeo could’nt have been any better.. great video! Thank you IGN
starter kit if your DM is also brand new to D&D or if your group doesn’t have a DM and one of you have to take the plunge but the essentials kit is really great too and you can mix them together as they take place in the same hub location! Also buy a bunch of dice on the cheap from amazon ebay or wish because sharing dice the first few sessions were a pain! 😅 eventually you’ll all want your own unique cool dice and become dice goblins too!
Sean Ferrol Seconded - I've run a single session of the Starter Set premade adventure, and my friends and I had an absolute blast. They're entirely new, and my only experience has been more Critical Role watching than I care to admit, but it's really easy to get going with.
A teacher at my school started a dnd club I joined and got some of my friends who had never played before (I had played) I was expecting like 10 people to be there but there were like 30 and the teacher was like “woah”
I played DnD back in the day from '82 to '94 or so until Magic the Gathering took over my interest. Studying the adventures and running them, or playing in one, was a lot more real and fulfilling than watching most tv shows or movies, reading most books, or being in touch with the current pop culture. I enjoyed the complexity of the Outer Planes and the possibilities they represent - for example, imagining the difference between shedding your mortal coil and ending up at your final plane vs. choosing to visit the planes as an adventurer while alive. The game's many subjects was a safe character study of possibilities. 3rd edition changed things a bit, as did 4th and 5th edition. It isn't the same, especially with all the other kinds of very popular game forms out there (massive online games, internet culture, etc.) But popularities circle around. LEGO was popular, then Minecraft, and now we have LEGO Minecraft. DnD was popular, then Massive online RPGs were popular, then 4e was described as a massive online style of many many powers you tick off as a player character. That faded away and now we have 5th edition which is more a return to form. Still not the same, though - those days of old I don't think will ever be back.
@@iOnRX9 My online group is playing the Paizo games for now. But DnD will always be my teenage years and lower 20s jam. 4e though, I try to forget about that.
It's so nice seeing Maude and Trisha here, because I started playing D&D after watching them play on "Sorcered Fed" back in 2015. With that I found Critical Role and feel in love. Thanks for playing online, guys!
I recently started playing d&d, and I am loving it. It has helped me open up, as well as helping me getting more control over my anxiety. It's an amazing game and I'm glad I started playing it.
Memories of my youth. I have the original rule set as shown at the beginning of this video. My mom found the set at a garage sale. It's great to see it's renaissance.
Just started playing little over a months ago with my close friends. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever had the chance play! So much fun! We’re all in our mid 30s and having a blast!
Dnd beyond please, support more languages!!, it's so hard to teach and find players outside USA. Books are soooo expensive in my country, it's super sad.
@@mandisaw 4e? Why?. 2nd and 3.5 sure but 4e was awful and at most only slightly better than the very first original interation of D&D. Not OG D&D, not 1st edition AD&D I'm talking about the very original Chainmail mod version.

“Who can resist unconventional dice?” Well, I only started playing D&D a few months ago but I’ve had 6 dice sets for years now. Do with that information as you will.
I got in on the initial push for 3e but the first campaign I played in was 2e. The game has come a long way since then but I think it has been evolving in the right direction.
Bean a Role Player since I was in Single Didgets, D&D wasn't my first (Travller, Twilight 2000, Dragon Warriors & CoC) but I did play a lot of Basic, 1E, 2E and a little bit of 3e and some D20 stuff, I still drag out my 1E library from time to time.
did you know matt mercer specifically made a dnd class for vin diesel? based off the witcher and like bloodborne, it's called the blood hunter, and while it's not technically legal within adventure league, it's still approved material.
I’ve been watching Aquisitions Incorporated for about three years. You seen the characters grow on screen and seeing all their adventures is like following a long running show you’d see on TV. It’s crazy how you don’t see people playing a game and rolling dice, you see a story unfold 🙌
My friend/coworker got me into dnd and it has taken over my life. I am forever grateful that he showed me the greatest game of all time. I'm working towards being a DM so my friend can get a break and play
No. D&D had been around for ages. What changed was the perception of it as not being the goofy game a bunch of losers play on a Friday night and being able to actually see how the game is played and what it's all about as opposed to listening to someone try to explain it. I should know, my girlfriend once tried to ask me about D&D and even though I tried to put it in as simple of terms as I could she thought "no that's too complicated" but when I showed her Dice, Camera Action and Critical role that's when she realized "oh, okay it's actually pretty simple and looks like fun"
@@willnelson9906 Technically, doesn't she not have a character atm? I'm not caught up on The Mighty Nein yet, but I heard Yasha betrays the team and becomes a NPC Bad Guy. And I haven't heard of her rolling another character yet, so...
D&D is the only game I've played where I can truly show off my insane choices. If you get angry at the shop keeper you can steal from them, if you decide to stalk an old man and steal his apples while snapping your fingers aggressively you can do that. Truly a masterpiece :)
I'm usually a shy and awkward person, but now I DM for 5 groups, play in 2 and I continue to try and get people in to it. And everyone opens up over time
D&D is badayss! originally i thought it'd be too complex to get into so I jumped into a party with an established story and dungeon master and just got completely engrossed in it!! the amount of theatrics and imagination. Just awesome!!! If you were ever on the fence it IS AWESOME!
I know of this guy who was all hyped up about D&D, he tried to get into the game. In his first session, he cried out "WHAT?? You have to IMAGINE things?? EVERYTHING is done via IMAGINATION??? That's not what they did on Stranger Things!!!" He thought D&D was a boardgame with figures you move on a board LOL
I mean it kinda is, I've always preferred playing on maps than purely theatre of mind, how else are you supposed to maximize the damage on that fireball? 🙃 but I still enjoy pure imagination games too
lol. I've played both ways. One group never had a map and the DM just explained our relative positioning and let us move when we needed to. The games I'm in now are on Roll20, though, so we use the maps pretty extensively.
Most games rely on their structure to carry the players through the experience. Using your imagination is precisely what makes ttrpg’s so fulfilling. But the imagination is like a muscle; the more you use it, the easier it gets
He may be more of a visual kind of guy then. A mini map, or some terrain pieces might be the way to go for him. I've played without, and with maps, as well as with mini terrain pieces. I really like the last option the best, even though it takes more work.
Me and my friends have started a DnD group, none of us have any experience but we were all interested. Yesterday, we had our first meeting and made characters as well as a bit at home. In two weeks we will have our first ever game. I'm pumped!
I've never played D&D but I'm a huge Star Trek and video game nerd. This really makes me want to play; such a cool video. I think because of this video ... I'm going to pick up this so called 6th edition thingy.
I'm about to be certified as a teacher and I've realized that playing DnD and specifically DMIng has made me into a better teacher. It's been a really interesting experience to see how the skills that one develops in DnD can be directly applied to real life.
Same here though now I have a group of 8 who get together(when we can) and see how many baddies we can destroy or how many places we can get kicked out of..also were all from Maine so NE represent
As a befinner dm i really like how you can play the game without knowing all the ruled. It makes it a lot easier and probably a lot more fun for the players
We started playing last year and now have 3 campaigns, of which I'm a DM of one. And I just started to DM another game because people from work were interested too. I absolutely love it and so do the rest. And this version is so easy to learn. Even DM'ing is not super hard. Although I did have the advantage that my DM had been playing since ADnD so he helped me a lot.
DnD is and always be one of the best games I have ever played PERIOD. Yes I know my opinion is biased but I don't care, as long as your capable of imagining something being told to you, and you have a decent DM anyone can get into it!
@El-ahrairah Yep, even here in my country (Philippines) the community is still very active. An unaware person just wouldn't know because it doesn't have that kind of media exposure, unless you went to a mall and there's a shop there that hosts MTG tournaments with countless tables and people gathering around.
Magic the Gathering was invented to be a quick fame to play while you wait for the rest of the D&D group to show up or while somebody goes and gets snacks/drinks/pizza or whatever. The first set has HEAVY D&D influence.
The best feeling I have ever had was one of my players telling me that playing dnd for the first time was the best experience he has had. He went to hawaii a month before playing DnD
I used to play a lot of role playing games when I was a kid in the 80's (D&D, Robotech, Rift, etc) It was a place for the not-so-cool kids to let their imaginations run free and to be able express themselves in a place when folks who "two strapped" back packs and read books was uncool. I had no idea that D&D had this kind of audience now. I'm glad to see things have changed.
No, this is an oversimplification. There are so many pieces to why, there's a reason this video is as long as it is and it's nothing more than a broad strokes overview of the things specifically related to 5e D&D.
you can sum these 20 min' with the last 3 min' - it's. all. about. the storyTELLING. you hear a joke, you listen to lyrics, you watch a show, a movie, a performance of any kind - you're less likely to re-tell or remember about what was in it, as much as how the "story" was told. how the performer/s told you, with words or actions or body language, a story that made you feel a certain way. but the thing with roleplay - you are a part of the story, and you are a part of making up the story. so you don't just take it in, you feedback off it both ways. and THAT'S what's really great and outstanding about roleplay. you don't have to know ANY rules just start to tell a story, with other people, and make it up as you go along, togather. that's all there is to it.
While I've been a huge fan of the table top game. Dungeons & Dragons based pc games I have been hardcore. And I'm happy that the new Baldur's Gate 3 will be using 5E rule set.
5th edition and putting base rules online was a gift to DnD - I know I started playing again with a bunch of parents from my daughters school class and they were thrilled because now they could finally try IT :-)
Matt Colville is ridiculous. I watched only one of his videos and he spent the first 10-15 minutes blabbering before finally making the point. That 10-15 minutes was him repeating mostly the same thing in different ways. He also makes a lot of sentances/points overly long without adding anything of substance to excuse the length. Sorry but he is a bad UA-camr.

As someone who started playing in 1st edition and had to deal with Satanic Panic, and all the stereotypes my whole life. Just thinking about how popular this game has become makes me feel so vindicated. I love it so much.
It is a glorious time to be alive as a DnD fan.

back in 2014 I was a senior in high school, when 5e came out.

🎵 *Critical Role* 🎵
The adventure begins
They were always beside you
Your nerdy best friends
And the DM to guide you
And they rise from flames for the battles ahead
Villains beware 'cause you're 'bout to be dead!
They got magic and flair
They got falchions and cunning
They don't see over there
There's a monster incoming
Inspiration is waiting
Rise up, don't think twice
Put your fate in your hands
Take a chance, roll the dice
Can you answer the call?
Dig in deep in your soul
As the legend unfolds
Now it's your turn (your turn)
To roll!

Just reading it without hearing the actual song out loud still gives me chills. Those lyrics are spot on and Sam Reigal is amazing.

The real world tells to avoid stark fate, or capricious chance. Be safe, be safe.
But this game, highs, lows, comrades, raging silliness, high drama....
It’s the greatest game ever made its that simple. The amount of great memories and friends I’ve made playing this game is endless. No better feeling than sitting down with friends or strangers and creating a new and fun world
Mazzy it’s great but....Call of Cthulhu ....

I never thought I’d see the day that the Russo brothers were playing dnd... this makes me immensely happy beyond anything I can dream of
Guardian Metal Sonic they had an episode where the characters of their show “Community” were playing DnD
There are a lot of celebrities that play
They're notorious geeks, they love Magic the Gathering too
It seems like a majority of the most creative people in the entertainment industry now played DnD when they were kids, or still play today.
I blame lord of the rings. Being able to see a high quality adventure took away the majority of the negative stigma.
This is definitely what got me into D&D and LARP. I don't regret it one bit. My friends and I are currently world building and it's such a great experience. We're setting up the new world to be the future of our current campaign (as in our next campaign). Great memories and feelings.

Literally in the exact same boat, creating my character was insane amounts of fun
I would like to shout out a channel called "cosmonaut variety hour" for making a video that completely got me into this game
Yea Marcus over there is great
That’s, no joke, exactly what got me interested in d&d. Literally watched it for like the tenth time yesterday. This video actually reminded me of it, so I can’t emphasize enough, go watch that video.
I got into DnD because of him actually
if I may..check out Web DM, Dungeon Dudes or Matthew Colville... those are top-notch DnD content makers !
Same thing for me I saw that video and started looking it up more and now I've been playing for about 2 years and it's a blast every week
Deborah Ann Woll says something quite deep and accurate : 12:24.
I kid you not I was just finally looking into getting the 5th edition books to start my own little D&D adventures with my friends... the timing of this vodeo could’nt have been any better.. great video! Thank you IGN
I would recommend to get the Starter kit or the Essentials kit if you dont want to create your own story from scratch
starter kit if your DM is also brand new to D&D or if your group doesn’t have a DM and one of you have to take the plunge but the essentials kit is really great too and you can mix them together as they take place in the same hub location!
"I attack the darkness" - Kate is so awesome.
Well to be fair...sometime it's still "I attack the darkness".
I magic missile the darkness.
I summon the darkness
I walk into the darkness...with Devil’s sight.
And that's also super-cool!
I called darkness, but he wasn't home so I left a message.

We always used figures or pennies when we didn't have any figures.
Me and my friends have started a DnD group, none of us have any experience but we were all interested. Yesterday, we had our first meeting and made characters as well as a bit at home. In two weeks we will have our first ever game. I'm pumped!

I missed the days sitting around table during lunch to play Magic...
Would be nice to see the full Rothfus interview.
The answer is quite obvious. Only two words:

No, this is an oversimplification. There are so many pieces to why, there's a reason this video is as long as it is and it's nothing more than a broad strokes overview of the things specifically related to 5e D&D.
you can sum these 20 min' with the last 3 min' - it's. all. about. the storyTELLING.
you hear a joke, you listen to lyrics, you watch a show, a movie, a performance of any kind - you're less likely to re-tell or remember about what was in it, as much as how the "story" was told. how the performer/s told you, with words or actions or body language, a story that made you feel a certain way.
but the thing with roleplay - you are a part of the story,
and you are a part of making up the story.
so you don't just take it in, you feedback off it both ways.
and THAT'S what's really great and outstanding about roleplay.
you don't have to know ANY rules
just start to tell a story, with other people,
and make it up as you go along, togather.
that's all there is to it.
"but that's a whole other video." Hopefully literally, because that topic sounds fascinating.
As a fairly new player/DM I have found D&D an amazing outlet to Built worlds and tell stories.
While I've been a huge fan of the table top game. Dungeons & Dragons based pc games I have been hardcore. And I'm happy that the new Baldur's Gate 3 will be using 5E rule set.
Just hope that the storytelling lives up to the standard of Baldurs Gate 2
Matt Mercer is an amazing DM. He brought together a great group as well.
My first experience of DnD was through Stranger Things. Usually the simplest explanation is the best one.
Lol exactly
5th edition and putting base rules online was a gift to DnD - I know I started playing again with a bunch of parents from my daughters school class and they were thrilled because now they could finally try IT :-)

Matt Colville is ridiculous. I watched only one of his videos and he spent the first 10-15 minutes blabbering before finally making the point. That 10-15 minutes was him repeating mostly the same thing in different ways. He also makes a lot of sentances/points overly long without adding anything of substance to excuse the length. Sorry but he is a bad UA-camr.
