I expected to see a clip from Dexter's Laboratory "D & DD" episode, heh. Shame, that was one of my favorite references as its the one that got me into D&D besides Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale cRPG series.
I'm pretty sure the game store in my town started DND sessions for people every Wednesday because they saw this and were like "Hey, that sounds like a good idea.". Me and my friends didn't start doing it until a few months ago. I'm really glad, it's the highlight of my week.
Once a guy I was playing with just said “hey guys, watch this!” and did a front flip. But he rolled a 1, and instantly jollies his pet bird on his shoulder.
I actually agreed to join a D&D group with my friends today even though I never played the game. I was a bit nervous so this video coming up was really convenient. Thanks Marcus!
im honestly so glad that dnd is making a huge comeback wave and it's being more accepted among people you wouldn't ever expect to be the type to like dnd. it's so amazing to have more people in the community who show this common interest in such cool shit

JMPro2610 in my opinion, that takes away a lot of the fun, i played today, got three N1 in a row, and my character put himself to sleep, threw hinself out of a window, and almost killed everybody by screaming like a little girl and attracting 12 enemies that was a fuckton higher level than us. Then i saved us by putting them all to sleep and we killed them and the evil wizard that had made them
I started playing a one-shot dnd game with all of my 5 roommates in college, just 4 weeks ago. Now my other friend wanna be the DM and we're all making another character from scratch. Its very homebrew as we make our own world and universes and gods. So far I think it brings us closer as friends because we play every week now, and one game could last for hours on end.
I've wanted to play D&D for years, but I have NO FRIENDS. Like none. And the few people I do hang out with abhor the idea of playing. Like, I have a starter set. But there are no game stores and no people to play with 😭
Same, the learning curve isn't the intimidating part, it's trying to find people who'll play and not get pissed cause you suck or are interested at all
The most hilarious part of all that was Holly started the open marriage bullshit, but then got mad and tried crying about being cheated on and neglected by jet husband just cause he got laid more than her... she wanted to cheat during the marriage and he got the better end of it and she got jealous over it.
Even if you don't have an iPhone if your phone has Google on it you can Google 'spinner' and it will have a spinner with a customisable amount of results. If you don't have a phone it probably works on computer as well. If you don't have a computer you can just ask to borrow somebody else's dice.

@@TheSamgo plus the expansions the dice the dungeon master screen the board if you didn't buy the starter pack for some strange reason I mean you don't need like half that stuff but when I was getting into DND a lot of people stress that this was better than this so I can see this being really taxing on anyone's wallet because they thought they needed this or that
Here are my current problems with playing dnd because i would love to play it but i really can’t. 1. I can’t spend too much money rn. I know the you mentioned free alternatives but still. 2. HUGE language barrier with my family. I would love to play this with my family but the really awkward situation is that we moved to Sweden when i was really young and therefore i can speak fluent and complex Swedish and English but have problems with my home language while my parents speak fluently in my home language but struggle with Swedish and English since they moved here when they were older. We can communicate but a lot of the magic of dnd is lost when you can’t use complex adjectives and such to make any sort of environment. 2. I don’t have a lot of friends that have the patience to play or that aren’t into dnd. Pretty self explanatory but still i have difficulty with finding someone to play with. 3. I live in a very small town rn and there isn’t really any tabletop place i can go to too play. Seriously the population of my city is like 60k. Not exactly new york city lol. (I’m moving in a month though to a way bigger city so maybe that could change. Also since I’m moving, i will be able to meet new people and maybe they will be more willing to play dnd) 4. I find it really difficult to find any place to play dnd online. Often due to timezones, availability of games and annoying requirements like being a experienced player that can only play on Monday mornings have hindered me from finding any game online. Anyways rant over i guess it’s just kind of a shame that i can’t play dnd since i love it even if i have only played a single game before.
60k is a HUGE city for D&D. I had your same problems, but start pitching the idea of D&D with the premise of Stranger Thinga ("Yo I watched ST, how about we play the game in the show?"). If you have Reddit, go to r/lfg, you can find groups online pretty easily. If anything fails, you can try with Telegram. I'm DMing 2 sessions, one on Telegram and one irl. Tell us if you succeded!
Rasul Abdullayev “very small town” - has more people than any city near me for hundreds of kilometres. I still be playing tho. (I have lots of friends tho)
I played dnd with a club for a month and then they said one of my friends hadn't paid for the club and his mom wouldn't let him so I'm just like "fuck this, were playing during lunch, im dm'ing" and then we just sort of have been playing for a few years now
I am now really seeing the appeal of DnD when I found out I was already playing it in another way! I had played in various roleplaying sims on Second Life, that use DnD based hud's and meters, fully equipped with rules and complex weapons systems. One of the sims I played on was called Remnants of Earth, which is a cyberpunk world. They use a custom hud that is HEAVILY based on DnD's rules. It took more effort to learn, and I almost gave up on it, but I stuck it out, and in the end, I enjoyed my experience. Within the last couple of months, I had begun watching DnD videos and how DnD sessions go. After watching a few quick sessions, I think I can now see the immense appeal of it all. One of the primary reasons I preferred to play in these DnD style sims on SL was because of the freedom I had, I could do anything literally as you said and I am only limited by my imagination and the luck of the dice. I think a lot of people tend to be very unfair in their judgment of DnD players or even gamers in general and to be fair; I use to be one of those people. I am now two months from 30 years on this earth, and a lesson I have learned the hard way was to give everyone and everything a fair shake. When I was younger, I use to be very judgmental towards things I didn't immediately form an interest in. Because of my shortsighted views, I missed out on a lot of gratifying experiences in my life. I can't count how many times I decided to try something that I thought was stupid when I was younger and ended up LOVING it! Rap, R&B, Jazz, classical music, opera, roleplaying, sports videogames, basketball, medieval combat competitions, classical literature, poetry, and countless other things that I don't have the time to list. Things I have learned to enjoy merely by giving it a try and approaching it with an open mind. I may not like something the first time I experience it, but if I take the time to learn more about it, I will usually come to LOVE it! In terms of recreation, I highly recommend to everyone, try it and keep trying it, because you might end up realizing its not only something you thoroughly enjoy but something you are very good at.
We had a moment where I (dm) laid out the situation where there was wolves guarding an entrance. If they fed the wolves it would be easier to tame them. So what they do is CUT OFF THE FOOT OF THERE DOWNED TEAMATE AND FED IT TOW THEM. Wow.

Honestly, there's just about no excuses that people could give. I have no friends and I'm poor/too lazy to go buy crap, but I've still been able to find a game to join and play. You should also not feel intimidated by the book, and feel like you need to read it all [especially if you're like me who can get sidetracked real easy when it comes to reading] Literally, there's so many videos that can help introduce you into the game. And if anything just watch a few podcasts. Some great ones are SourceFed D&D - which is a very simplified version of the game, helps you just understand the simple concepts of it. Critical Role - Just a great podcast, and a really awesome dm. There's a bunch more podcast out there that probably fit to more of your taste. But you also need to at least put some effort into it to get yourself started off.
Don't know if you know this already, but robots created by wizards now exist in dnd as official playable races. They're called the Warforged. Sorry if this seems kinda dickish to say, not trying to be, just wanted to point it out in case anyone was wondering or maybe wanted to play as a robot.

Actually, my last session was a one on one, and it really was kinda more intense than my usual group battles. It was actually really fun though! I got to fight a bearded demon and his two imps, and I nearly died, but being a paladin, I used Devine smite on him twice and he was dead. Very fun, would recommend.
Fantastic video, broski. I wish this was made 10 years ago. Really fucking cool to see people talk about things they're passionate about. I'm an example of one of those long-distance Roll20 people, it's how our DM who lives half a state away can hang with us every Saturday.

I saw this video 6 yeas ago, eminently after watching the video I texted a friend whom mentioned the game before. I've now watched almost all of critical role and play twice a week. I keep falling in love with the game more and more. I've build my own DnD table and bought a 3D printer for more emersion. Marcus, thank you for getting me into DnD (idk if you'll see this comment bc the video is so old but still wanted to say it)
Nice one! I'm an old school 3.5 player but I'm not having a great time trying to adapt to 5th edition. I'll give it another try when I get where I want to go. I should be able to retire early next year (13 years early) and I plan to expatriate to Cambodia. I'm hoping I can find a few expats and maybe some locals who want to work on their english and see if I can make a gaming group out of them. Talk about a challenge!
I know this is two months after, but really, if you haven't already switched over, I'd fully recommend switching to 5e. It makes things a lot more streamlined and learnable. Also, balanced. And if a problem is losing all the extra content from the 3.5e books, you can always adapt it, or buy the new expansions. If you were to get an expansion book, I'd suggest Volo's Guide to Monsters if you want more monster variety, or Xanathar's Guide to Everthing for character variety, and some cool common magic items.
5E plays a lot like a video game MMO. The best version for actual roleplaying would be AD&D2E. Head on over to DriveThruRPG.com and pick up the three PDF core books (Player's Guide, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monstrous Manual) for a song. It's DEFINITELY better than 3.5's miniatures war gaming hack and slash. And there's hundreds of sourcebooks (not splatbooks, but actual sourcebooks) with actually fleshed out and vibrant worldbuilding and NPC characters and dialog. Much simpler and faster DM setup too, as you don't build enemies exactly like player characters but instead use only stats that matter.
Interesting that you think 3.5 is "old school" considering Gary Gygax had little (if any) involvement in designing it. I thought "old school" would be from the 1970s or 1980s, not 2000s. I guess I am wrong.
Awh man, I used to play AD&D2e - was my first and last D&D experience. I did dip into 3.5, but hadn't got any friends for it at that time. I loved the handbooks for AD&D2e though. Everything apart from THAC0 was great. Fuck THAC0.
This one time a person in my party seduced a black dragon into go into human form (you can figure out why) and then our ranger ran in shot him with his blunderbuss got a NAT 20 and Insta gibbed him. We were level 3.
I would normally question the players relationship with the dm if they were running into black dragons at level 3, but the fact you pulled it off works for me.
MARCUS, I'm starting a simplified D&D campaign with my friends and I'm gonna be the DM, but I've NEVER done it before! A simple startup video would be dope as SHIT! I'm PRAYIN' for it! The most I can do thus far is help with Character Sheets and that's it. I have a story idea I want to roll with as well, but not sure how to make it all work in terms of making enemies for my buds to fight, etc etc. It's complicated stuff!
I would recommend running some test adventures first to get into the feel of it. Also don't include the bags of magical beans, in my game my players accidentally had a giant pyramid with a mummy lord inside sprout out of Neverwinter's sewers when they were level 4.
yes also he does a bunch of different dnd things and one of them is called critical role on geekandsundry's twitch channel thursday nights 7pm pst where he dm's for a bunch of other voice actors
yep. He's the DM for a d&d show called Critical Role. It's still running, and you can get started here on youtube quite easily. Some of the players are the voice actors of Ilidan, Jaina and Mograine from WoW
Critical Role is my favourite show of all time. I doubt there will ever be anything as epic. For all those who don't know it yet: /watch?v=i-p9lWIhcLQ&list=PLqTT_VuffgDP0I6accl0jP5p3kxBRPVPa A playlist with all episodes. Enjoy ^^
Being the DM is the best part of dnd. It’s can be frustrating when players don’t do what you expected, but the stories you weave are the best part of your life. And when you see the smiles on others faces, you know you did it right.
I'm a very, VERY tired father who has to do everything at work and at home and this..THIS is the only thing holding my sanity. And by "this" I mean potentially playing DnD with my kids when they grow up. I've never touched this game but I know I'm gonna and it's going to be awesome.
well, my first D&D session was when i joined my friends(was the 4th person), and created a lvl 9 Monk/pirate. With boons and shit... God that character survived for 5 MONTHS! with so many close deaths, that it's not even funny! + all of my fellow payers were new, except the DM, he's already a veteran with 5+ years of expiriance in the game, and has a lot of books for it ^_^ we do it on Roll20(since were internet buddys) and we make a session happen each week. Also, just to spite you pple, my character managed to survive, but i was pissed at how he was always treated in the party, so i just retired it, now a Kenku monk Pirate, with his soul taken by a wargod, makes storms in the oceans, and i prey our current party doesnt meet him, cause he was pumped up quite a bit. A.k.a. This is fucking awesome game to play w friends, even with strangers, it just works.
The most hilarious part of all that was Holly started the open marriage bullshit, but then got mad and tried crying about being cheated on and neglected by jet husband just cause he got laid more than her... she wanted to cheat during the marriage and he got the better end of it and she got jealous over it.
You actually got me to finally get this game. And when I got it I played it with my school friends during lunch, and now they’re into it. You have spawned 4 new players with one video. You’re doing the lords work
9:29 honestly, my main problem with the starter set is that it doesn't actually explain how to make a character but it's not as if that information is difficult to find online, just run something like "how to make a D&D character" through a search engine
Thank you for making this video, about 2 months ago I asked one of my friends who mentioned it if I could play and since then I've had so much fun playing the game.
Not necessarily, it depends on your players and how well you know them. I can often predict how my players will react to a given scenario, though they do still surprise me from time to time and I always enjoy it when they do so.
Looking into how to getting into the game at the moment. I am obsessed with the idea of being able to find others who I can go on adventures with. It seems like the best hobby I didn’t know about until some month ago
Frownigami I started playing first with a friend I went to church with. Another friend has a pastor who plays. Play a D&D gave when God sent you on a quest to fight demons with Jesus as your mentor nda an angel as your quest giver. Go wild, dude. XD
Gary Gygax the very founder of Dungeons and Dragons was a Christian himself. Ive read Dark Dungeons, and I'm a Christian, honestly Jack Chick didnt do enough research on Dungeons and Dragons, it was all because of the Satanic Panic of the 80's where so many Fundamentalists believed a lot of things are from Satan.
I watched this video waayyy back and it officially convinced me to play, but I was still super shy about it. Then I went to secondary school, got a bunch of mental friends, and now we’re in the middle of our first campaign. It is AWESOME. Thanks so much :)

SadistSerpent how did it go?
SadistSerpent Wish I had friends who were into role playing. 😦
im honestly so glad that dnd is making a huge comeback wave and it's being more accepted among people you wouldn't ever expect to be the type to like dnd. it's so amazing to have more people in the community who show this common interest in such cool shit
It's like LotR sure, but he only if everytime Legolas fires his bow, there's a 1 in 20 chance to trip on his bow and look like a dumbass.
Hah, well there's also that 1 time in 20 where he fires his bow into the eye socket of the orc and brain matter explodes out of the back of it's skull like an over-ripe melon.
ThePinkRubberDucky or just don't use crit fail rules if that's not your thing xD
Then i saved us by putting them all to sleep and we killed them and the evil wizard that had made them
JMPro2610 but as you say, play like you want to, that is the beauty of D&D (or any other pen and paper RPG)

I play d&d with some friends every Sunday and I have had so much fun and love playing it so much
there's a great youtuber by the name of matthew colville! he has 20+ 'running the game' videos with a whole bunch of new DM advice
Yeah! He's great. He is even close to 40+ videos right now!
Also since I’m moving, i will be able to meet new people and maybe they will be more willing to play dnd)
Rasul Abdullayev well inkwell why don't you just take a shower
You can play on discord
Or play a cheaper pen & paper game. A better one too
60k is a HUGE city for D&D. I had your same problems, but start pitching the idea of D&D with the premise of Stranger Thinga ("Yo I watched ST, how about we play the game in the show?").

I already started playing Pathfinder.
Oh, no... :(
Nooooooo!
HERESY!
Hey man, cool. I started out with pathfinder and shadowrun.
TheTrueChuster YES! Preach!
BURN, BURN AT THE STAKE!

Critical Role - Just a great podcast, and a really awesome dm.
There's a bunch more podcast out there that probably fit to more of your taste. But you also need to at least put some effort into it to get yourself started off.

I keep falling in love with the game more and more. I've build my own DnD table and bought a 3D printer for more emersion. Marcus, thank you for getting me into DnD (idk if you'll see this comment bc the video is so old but still wanted to say it)
you know you have a sick life when you have watched all of the episodes of all of the different dnd shows he showed clips from.
Fuck THAC0.
