    To this day Layne has been blackballed by the music industry. The year he died the music award shows excluded him from the ending tributes to musicians who had passed that year. He was a phenomenal talent and because of the issues that plagued him throughout his life (and ultimately ended up being the longest suicide in history) he was swept under the rug. Yes Kurt was just as talented and even shared the same issues as Layne, but history paints these individuals in separate lights. Layne became (re)addicted following an injury. It was how he coped with the silver tongued industry. Such a similar story these days, yet no one wants to give Layne the respect he deserves officially. Never forget the lengendary Layne Staley.

    I'd rarely seen my dad cry, Jimi Hendrix, and Andrew Wood were two other times. My dad is 73 now and I recently played some of Layne's isolated vocals for him. We both agreed that it was one of the most moving experiences either of us had ever had. He's in late stage Parkinson's but for decades we were concert partners seeing over 600 shows together. My dad is the greatest father the world has ever known and although Parkinson's takes and takes until there's nothing left to take, we definitely LIVED.

      Most ppl praise the MTV unplugged video. What most ppl dont realize is by the time they recorded Unplugged, Layne was in the depths of his addiction and had already lost most if not all of his teeth. Layne had final say on the editing of the footage. He did not allow close ups of his mouth and edited out shots of him seemingly asleep between verses. While I do agree that AIC Unplugged is historic I can only imagine how magnificent it would have been if his voice was as powerful as it is in this video and having all of his teeth. In Unplugged you can see Layne struggle to make the powerful vocals as he did in this Bleed the Freak taping.

      You can say the same with many other songs of their’s, not just this one. Rooster @ Tilburg demolishes the studio recording. MITB @ ABC concert is amazing, but the version performed in Osaka is like a revamped, uptempo edit. Forgot the name of the concert, pretty sure it was in ‘93, they performed for about 25 min only and opened with Nutshell and THAT version might be, in my opinion, one of the best of that song. Down In A Hole unplugged outdoes the studio recording etc etc
      Great in the studio, but they really shine during live performances.

      Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
      However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
      ua-cam.com/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/v-deo.html&pp=ygUQYmV5b25kIHRoZSB3ZWxsIA%3D%3D
      Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
      Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

    Craziest most underrated live performance in my personal opinion
    Jerry absolutely shreds his solo... as Layne walks off stage which is badass mid performance... Sean Kinney stands up then giving almost a sarcastic cymbal rip himself...Then Layne comes back and gives again in my opinion the craziest pitch I have ever heard in anyone’s voice ever...

  • @normanperez5008
    @normanperez5008 5 років тому +140

    People must understand that even though Layne's vocals are phenomenal, the unique sound of AIC was the combination of both Layne and Cantrell's voices on the choruses. Layne on his own is un matched as we hear on the Mad Season Songs and other projects Layne participated on.. But the true AIC sound is the combination of Layne and Cantrell, a sound we will never again get no matter which singer AIC gets. That haunting, but heavenly AIC sound will only exist in history...

    • @sasha219
      @sasha219 4 роки тому +2

      You are right. OG AIC vocal sound wasnt just Layne but Cantrell too. Their music/melodies were truly collaborated between them all. In AIC Layne had the power vocals. His sound exploded out of his chest. In Mad Season you can hear the transition to more of a head voice with a more gentle sound. Some have speculated that after years of abuse he could no longer make those powerful chest sounds we all love. He was obviously weaker while in Mad Season but he was also finding his voice without Cantrell. As AIC has been reborn with William the collaborated vocals with Cantrell, while still encompassing the Cantrell sound and is great, the "it" factor just seems a bit off. Maybe they should have dropped the AIC name...idk. Just wonder what else Staley would have given us. No hate just love. Its hard to pick up the pieces and even harder when it gets thrown in your face even 20 years after the fact

      Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
      However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
      ua-cam.com/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/v-deo.html
      Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
      Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.
