  • It's been a while since I've touched grunge on this channel, and I really wanted to hear more Layne Staley and Alice In Chains. What better choice than what Jerry Cantrell called "the master piece of our record", and dives into the private relationship between Layne and his then girlfriend Demri. This song is HAUNTING!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Alice In Chains performing "Love, Hate, Love" for the first time.

Agreed. There was a truly unfortunate and rapid drop off in technique as the drugs took hold. Once the "Dirt" album showed glimpses of the darkness they were experiencing with possibly the emotionally heaviest album ever recorded, Layne could never quite recover. In more ways than one.
Once you get a chance, I would like if you could do a reaction to something from their third, self titled album where Jerry starts picking up some of the slack and a few of the songs are sung in tandem like "Again". Jerry actually had to do many of the lead vocals solo on that album.

The thing I can't get over in this song is how coherent the whole band feels. The drumming is playing all of these staggering, syncopated beats and never feels off time, the guitar is working through all of these tri-tone scales, the bass is plowing through the foundation, and Lane is spilling his guts out in front. It never feels disjointed even as it is wallowing in dissonance. It's a tremendous accomplishment.

I take some issue with how much the drummer rushes triplets, both here and on Sea of Sorrow right before the chorus- as a drummer, it is off time- but it's part of the charm. How much their songs speed up and slows down is actually a great hallmark of the pre-grid era.

I had the pleasure of seeing Alice in Chains @ Lalapalooza in 1993. He came on stage with a 5th of Jack in his hand, eyes closed, obviously not sober... put his foot on the front monitor speaker and belted out Dirt in its entirety... never opened his eyes once. It was jaw dropping. The entire audience was just entranced. Layne's voice was one of a kind. It's pained, embattled, sad... but just magical. Many have tried to duplicate it. Live at The Moore was filmed in ‘91. I personally think when he was sober in ‘93 his voice was even stronger than the Moore Theatre show. If you were in the first 12 rows at one of the Amphitheater shows on the Dirt tour in ‘93, you could absolutely FEEL Layne’s voice when he was hitting high notes! Layne was a phenomenal singer and always in the moment when he was singing. I’m really glad that I saw them as many times as I did. I seriously wish that I could have afforded to see them even more back then, but those Lollapalooza tour dates were so spread out state to state, it was hard to afford the tickets, gas, hotels, doing all the driving ,and getting the time off work as well. I saw them 4 times in ‘93 alone, so I can’t complain.

I saw them back in March 1991 - 5 months after the release of Facelift - they were of all things opening for Megadeth. The Almighty sandwiched in between them - a something of an eclectic mix to say the least! At that point I hadn't heard either AIC or The Almighty and let's just say they had an off night! Layne was general all over the place and they really didn't sell what Facelift had to offer, The Almighty however came out and knocked it out the park - I went away from the gig and bought The Almighty's albums and didn't return to AIC until the release of Dirt.
The irony of this being that Facelift nowadays is somewhere in my Top 40 LPs ever - but that performance went down as a forgettable mess to say the least.

      @AddLies Рік тому

I think Wake Up is a track that adds two important aspects to Layne's legacy, as we retrospect. Firstly, places Layne amongst the pantheon of great classic American counter-culture singers - as in those found in the '60s. Yes, he's a great alt-rock singer, but with Wake Up, he transcends that label. His performance in that song is like an echo from the past emerging within him decades later. It sounds absolutely like him, but at the same time requires a double-check. Nowhere else does he sound quite like that. Secondly, and sadly, it hints towards a whole new direction he could have taken as he aged. As such, it really emphasizes that distinctly tragic notion of a life cut short - another, albeit heartbreaking, allusion to the greats.
It would be a pleasure to hear an analysis of it on this channel.

AIC is a top all time band ever. And easily in my top 5 ever in US bands. I love everything about this band. Their music has always spoke to me the most of all the bands of this era. And lets not forget the vocals that Jerry Cantrell brought to the sound of AIC, not to mention his phenomenal guitar sound. Their dual harmonies/and better said as dissonant harmonics that the lead singer Layne Staley and guitarist created are among the best ever in any band in the world that's ever existed period. They are the gold standard in my opinion and have been unmatched since. Layne's technique for singing is all emotion, purity and his existence in his expression and sound. Yet he was likely never classically trained his voice was a powerhouse. He's forever a king among rock vocalists. When people study rock 100 years from now in music history they will study Layne Staley's vocals. Thank you for this amazing analysis!

On top of his game-Layne was untouchable. How he can easily growl himself into a effortless clean vibrato blows my mind. Even later in the years when he was not at full capacity - he still gave his all-this man just oozed that special ‘nectar’ that made him a true rock God. I love that, to this day, he is celebrated - he deserves all the accolades and appreciate for what he gave.

I can only imagine what the people at the Moore were experiencing that night. No one will ever come along with this level of power, clarity & passion, still get goose bumps to this day. R.I.P Lane, what a legend.

Most folks get the wrong idea about Layne's abilities by listening to his near end of life unplugged performances first. Not understanding how powerful he was in his prime. Roaring like a pissed off mountain lion.

The MTV Unplugged is very good anyway, then considering the shape he was in and the time that had lapsed since they had performed live together, it's a miracle that it even happened.

@@scootypuffjr. Yeah, I'm just speaking in terms of introduction to him as a singer and performer. People always say listen to the unplugged stuff first when it doesn't really show what he was capable of. It's a shell of him.

An amazing performance by any measure. Also consider that he is just 24 years old here, and not only is this live, but I get the impression that it is the first song of the set, so he may not even be completely warmed up yet. Unbelievable power and control.

It actually is in the middle of the set…..if you have the time, try & watch the whole thing- it’s only about 30 minutes. I promise-you will not be disappointed. Each song just gets better than the one before. The entire thing is phenomenal :)

One thing that I also notice is that the crowd is completely silent all through the song. No stray sounds at all even during lulls or the false ending. It's mesmerizing enough on video - I'd have to imagine it would be doubly so live.

I love how you dont look at these vocals just through a classical filter. You look for what makes them unique and special in their own way. Layne Staley is far and away my favorite vocalist from this era (my teenage years) so hearing you listen to the uniqueness that was him and being able to appreciate it for what it was is awesome. You are an inspiration Elizabeth for everyone to keep an open mind.
The thought of his vocals ever being autotuned is horrifying to me. Lets not try to make his voice conform to any preconceived notions of what is "correct"
