    It is indeed a very lucrative career. I will say that I know a couple of pilots and they’ve felt the effects of what is considered a difficult life (e.g., multiple divorces, health issues, etc). There’s often a reason that wages for a job type are high. Hard to get folks to live that life. But if you can persevere, yes, you can retire well. I’m sure you’ll have that 4th stripe soon Garrett! 👌👌

    Great info Garrett!
    The legacy airlines put 16% in your 401k with no match. Not sure where the 6% match is from. If you make $200,000 they will put in 32,000$. You can put your own money in as well but they don’t match it. Goal would be to hit 55,000 or whatever is the current limit.
    88 hours is easy to blow past with over time being double pay and taking extra reserve days. And I know at my airline the profit sharing check is “pensionable” as well.
    After you hit $55,000 in your 401k the airlines automatically put the 16% back into your straight paycheck as the IRS requires.
    It’s a great paying career after you get thru the years and years of hurdles. Right now it’s good. In about 7-10 years the new pilots will be in the regionals for a long time after hiring slows.
    You also need a college degree at the legacy airlines. So be careful you second career people. You will not make this kind of money unless you play the game and get a bachelors degree.

    Most match the percent you give. Instead of 6% of 10k, they'll say if you put 6% of your salary into your 401k we'll match that 6%. So on a $100,000/yr, you save 6% to your 401k, then the airline would match that 6k, giving you an additional 12k into your 401. You'd be crazy to not give the full match there, because you'll make enough without that 6k to live on and you'll set yourself up for a good retirement, and possibly an early retirement with continued investing into smart stocks. You could also use a money market account to increase your pay each month once you've managed to obtain a meaningful amount each month.

    Just some IRS info on this topic: The individual IRS maximum 401K contribution limit is $19,000 for 2019. ... Your employer's maximum 401K contribution limit is entirely up to them - but the max on total contributions (employee plus employer) to your 401K is $56,000 in 2019 (or 100% of your salary, whichever is less). The important take-away... invest invest invest... start early!!!! It will be tomorrow and you will be 65!!!! Yes, it happens that fast!!!!

    It’s sound amazing for retirement, but what is a current salary for a pilot as soon as she or he get the atp license??
    Because I heard it is really really expensive to get the license and become a pilot.

      Talking from experience here in portugal it costs about 60-70k to go to flight school and get a license it's expensive yeah but considering TAP pays in your first year 84k euros a year that means in just your first year you have already paid the cost of your license and now it's just profit which is pretty cool

      45 is fine. You can work 20 years if your medical is OK.
      That is the thing that knocks some people out.

    Great first video! Very informative. I have a question about doing a "side hustle" on top of working as a pilot? 88 hours a month is not a lot of work time, so I feel like you would have a ton of spare time to maybe start a business or do something else to make money? Is this true? Thanks!!

    • @flywithgarrett
      @flywithgarrett  5 років тому +2

      Like I said, the 88 hours is simply door close to door open time. That does not include time away from home and such. But yes, many pilots do have side "hustles" to keep them busy on their free time.
