👋 About Me 👋
After a successful business career where I've started and sold a number of companies, I've decided to get out from behind my computer to pursue a lifelong passion and start career 2.0 as a professional pilot. My goal is to get to 1500 hours and then either work for a large regional, a major, or possibly even cargo. Once my flight training is done, I will work as an independent CFI until I have reached the 1500 hours needed to get hired by one of the above. You can learn more at www.FlyWithTrent.com.

I'm 65, so my chance has passed, but I'd like to tell the younger guys and gals, don't put off your dreams. I was 40 yesterday. Time sprints as you get older. Start NOW! Good luck.
Well said! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It all helps my channel to grow and help more guys/gals like us!!
Trent, this is awesome, I’m a 42-year-old Police Lieutenant and I have eight years to go to retirement. I’m currently working on my private pilots license and when I retire at age 50 my plan is to have a second career as an airline pilot. You have no idea how much motivation this video has given me. Seriously gives me something exciting to look forward to. Thank you!
You bet!!
Hey LT. I'm not a lieutenant, but also on the job. I'm in Cali, HBU?
✈️
As an ambitious guy who has gone through the last 4 years of flight training, I can tell you that this video is 99.99% not possible. Your 8 licenses will cost you more than you budgeted, will depress you beyond belief, won’t be possible for 50% of attempted pilots. I actually do think it’s worth pursuing though, but have all the facts before you commit.
Same here! I'm 36 going on 37 and have 6 years left in the Army and my goal after is to become and airline pilot.
Don’t underestimate the amount of work Trent had to put into get this done in that amount of time. It took me 4 years degree + 2 years of CFI to acquire all the knowledge to become an airline pilot. If you don’t have above average intelligence and aren’t willing to study every breathing moment, extend your time line. Just being realistic here.
I agree with you…and I’ve done my best to make that clear in my videos. I’ve generally excelled at most things in life and flying falls into that bucket. Plus, I was in a position to do this full time….and if I wasn’t, it would have taken a lot longer.
That’s literally what he said on the video. Maybe watch it?
🤣🤣

35 year old woman here, going thru my ground school with 0 zero flight hours…thank you for the information I don’t think can do it as fast as you but definitely hoping for a 2 year time line 🙏🏾

I’m 17 and looking to become a pilot and this is by far the best video I’ve seen on UA-cam on this topic
Glad to hear that. Thank you!
Go for it !
🙌
I teach my film students, "It's not what you know, or who you know; it's who knows you. You can know all the people in the world, but if they don't know you exist, nothing is going to happen. So place yourself in the direct path of the people you'd like to meet." That comment toward the end of the video about being present at the airport, which potentially leads to more flight instruction bookings, struck a chord with me. That is so important! Great information in this video! All the very best with your aviation endeavors!
Thanks Errol!
It doesn't work like that in aviation...it's about experience, hours and ratings - this isn't an art 🎭
My mentor David proved that “being at the airport” with the right ratings, can open a floodgate of students. He, like me, logged 120 hours of instruction per month.
Nice job! I had my midlife crisis at age 23 and left the USN as a Diver to pursue aviation. It’s been an incredible career path ever since - worth every minute of the effort!
Good to hear! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
How old are you zego?
.
3 weeks for all written tests is crazy impressive bro! I'm 67% through the online ground school for PPL and I start flight school in just over a week
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
This has been a dream of mine since my Dad surprised me with my 1st RC airplane as a kid.. My wife just surprised me with a discovery flight for my 45th birthday this month . Apparently I'd been watching A LOT of airplane / become a pilot videos and she picked up on it lol. But this series has definitely been the extra push I needed. Thanks Trent and keep them coming.
You bet! And tell your wife she’s awesome for giving you that flight!
As a fellow 53 yr old pilot, I love what you're doing here Trent. It got me back behind the yoke about 2 weeks after your big video launch back in May. Thanks so much for giving your insights to us old dogs and saving the young ones a ton of cash by following a proven path that you've shared. To heck with the trolls ! Let them hang out in their basement playing MS Flight Simulator 2023, while you earn those three stripes on your collar. Keep up the great work. Aloha from the beaches of south Maui !

I’m a kid and I want to be a pilot when I grow up! Is there anything for me to know?
(I would really appreciate some tips)
Watch the videos :)
Thanks Trent .I am a burned out truck driver and to be honest with you, I don’t have an access to much guidance as far as moving forward. I’ve been sitting on my finished ground school portion and trying to figure out if moving forward is a worthy endeavor, shooting past 40years of age and wondering if I’ll be able to support myself after getting commercial license and not having enough time to get a job flying. So, videos like these do help. There aren’t many of them online though.
Glad you are finding my content helpful! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Dude! Thank you for this. I'm 45 and have spent a lot of time regretting not joining the Navy back in the day. I assumed it was pretty much all over for getting to fly the big planes. Your channel has given me so much hope, Trent. I'm meeting with my mentor this week to carve out a plan for all of this. Thank you!
👏👏👏👏 I’m so excited to hear that!!! BTW, I’ve got a free email course on how to become a professional pilot as fast as possible. Does my plan sound realistic. I want to join the Air Force and get a bachelors degree there, and somewhere down the line become an airline pilot. I would definitely like some feedback. I’m 20 yrs old btw living with my grandma so I want to come back before she passes
Yes!
Trent, i love these videos from you! Getting ready for my first checkride and plan to start my instrument training asap and hopefully get to where you are soon! Congratulations on your accomplishments.
Thanks!
I turn 35 in April. I’m currently in a stuffy office, working as a private banker, getting lazy and out of shape more and more every day.
I have played Microsoft flight simulator since I was 12, been obsessed with commercial flight since then.
So the other night I was sitting next to my wife as I was flying a b747 to her home state showing her all the bells and whistles and she asked me “Why didn’t you become a pilot?”
That stuck with me…cause I didn’t have a good reason. Never really looked into it. Always thought it was out of grasp.
Suffice to say right now I’m working hard to get in shape and healthier (I am healthy) just could be a lot better before I start having issues that would ground me. I am going to flight school.
I love hearing stories like yours…..especially when your spouse is on board. (She wants the free travel!!)
I’ve just started CrossFit. My wife is a CrossFit beast and got me into it.
Thank you for this video. My wife is a flight attendant and brought me to multiple countries in just a week and all those times, my heart was saying to pursue my childhood career dream. Im 30yrs old. Praying by 35 I'll be flying the airplane she's working in.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It all helps my channel to grow and help more guys/gals like us!!
You’re doing big things! It’s incredible how far you’ve come so quickly. Thanks for sharing your journey with us and inspiring everyone to follow their dream. Much gratitude- time to make it happen!
Thank you so much!!
I am 42 with a Private Pilot and about 80 hours. I'd like to return to flight training and have been trying for a number of years... but life has just got in the way at every pass. I am taking drastic steps now by selling my small business and getting minimal responsibilities. I have a wife and 3 kids but we own our property and our vehicles. As soon as the business sells, I'll be debt free and have a little extra to get started on my instrument rating. We'll see how it goes. I may go back into the IT industry to continue to pay for the rest of the ratings. I won't be able to do it fast like you did, simply because I don't have the money and I don't want loans.
Glad to hear you are going for it. I wish you all the best on your path. Please keep watching videos and leaving comments with updates on your progress.
@@trent_dyrsmid hey Trent , love your videos. Would be cool to see a detailed video on the skywest cadet program for a parts 61 study. Currently working on my instrument at a parts 61
I don’t yet have plans for a video like that. Once I’m in the program, maybe.
Good on you Trent for being such an inspiration to us “older” aviators. I just acquired my PPL 2 weeks ago and can’t wait to continue my training to finish up my ratings.

Great info! In my case, at age 58, I blocked 4 months for training and achieved my Commercial cert and Instrument rating, and finished with my CFI/Airplane. Although my brain feels like oatmeal, yes, it can be done! In our neck of the West Virginia woods (I18), we're doing Part61 training in C150s and Cherokee 140s from $110 to $140 an hour. Our goal is to have our pilots complete their Private/Commercial/IFR program at half the cost of ATP schools. Should be interesting!
Cool to see a few others that have been able to achieve similar results to my own! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
You are inspiring! I'm a 59 year old, 38 year veteran law enforcement officer, on the verge of retirement. I have always dreamed of flying. I live in Venice, FL and we have a flight school here. I'm driving there this morning because of your comment.

Hey again Trent. Congrats on getting all your certifications!! Nicely done! I’ve been following you since you posted your first video. I’m in a similar situation as you. I’m 42, have my PPL, haven’t flown in a long time (22 years) but want to get back into it and get all my qualifications. I live in Canada so the process may be a bit different than yours. But I’m encouraged. I’m just waiting on my aviation document book as well as my medical before I can start. Once I get those I’m gonna get going. My goal is to fly and study full time to expedite things.

So inspiring Trent! I just finished "writing" most of my tests including Advanced Ground Instructor, just one more to go later this week which is FIA. After that probably will go do all the simulator hours, then finding a local CFI to get more dual instrument hours before my Instrument checkride. What sucks is that my plane is undergoing an overhaul which is costing a LARGE sum of cash out of pocket. Considering instructing out of my own plane when it's all done, that way I can get paid for both instruction time and time for renting out my own plane. That might just be enough for me to replace my current income. Regardless, because of you, I joined SkyWest Cadet program, you've been a true inspiration for those of us that are a bit older (I'm 47) and aspiring to be a professional pilot. Hope to meet you one day.
Damn! That sounds like a terrific plan! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌

The DPE thing is huge!
People are flying to other states or scheduling months in advance in the Denver area. I've spoken to a few DPEs who don't have availability for nearly 6 months out. That just seems ludicrous to me.
You can thank the FAA for that.
100% that’s if you can get them to call you back! 😂
Same down here in Louisiana. We have to start talking turkey for at least a month or more in advance
🤯
Thank you. Theres a lot of info to navigate. I’ll take notes. Good to know this is possible!

Thanks Trent! Very inspirational. I'm 54 with about 90 hours. Getting ready for my PPL checkride in a month or so. Been at this for about a year here in Denver. We've had insane weather this past year. I have a sweet SIM I built so hoping my instrument goes much quicker with the amount of training I can do on it at home. I'm glad you mentioned the SIM part with the school though. My current school doesn't have one but the school down the hall does. So it'll probably make sense to go there. Like following your journey. Haters will hate. At the end of the day only results matter. Thanks!!!!
Thanks Ron. And yes, results is all that counts :)
@@trent_dyrsmid
WOW! This is crazy!
I'm 54 and wanting to get back into aviation.
I earned my private in Dec.1998. I then shuttled planes between the 3 fbo's for my flight school to build free hrs. I was also an EAA Young Eagle Flight Leader for a few years.(very satisfying) Got bored and decided to move from Wisconsin to Colorado and earned a degree in aircraft maintenance and an A&P. Worked for 12 yrs as a structural tech on business jets/turbo props. Which absolutely burned me out. That's when I left aviation all together.
Now, at 54, I want back in! But am hesitant bc of my age. I do not want to go ATP, but would be content as a cfi or designated examiner.
You've given me hope again.
My biggest hurdle, besides funds, is that i lost all my logbooks during many moves.
Right now, I'm considering approaching a major flight school and reaching an agreement to go through currency, instrument, commercial, cfi/cfii, me, mei, meii, then d.e., while also offering my A&P services in trade.
I don't know if that's realistic… ..but I'm going to try!
Thanks for this video!
Might you have any suggestions?
Hey Ron! Just wondering how you are progressing? Sounds like we are in a similar situations. I'm 54 as well, and actually live in Grand Junction, Co. Love to hear your situation.
@@lestvee4948 I have my checkride scheduled for Feb 28th! I will know more then. LOL. Should be good but I’m definitely nervous. You? Are you finished? I’ve been at this about a year and a half. I’m flying out of Centennial.
@@ron1969
That is awesome! I'll be thinking about you on the 28th.
Me… I actually received my ppl on 12-8-1998. Then was a ferry pilot for about a year, shuttling planes for my fbo. Got bored, broke. You know, life happened. Decided to move from Wisconsin to Denver and got an A&P, and a degree in aviation maintenance technology. Worked for 12 yrs as a structural tech on business jets/turboprops til 2010. Then got out of aviation all together. Lost all my logbooks since. (That hurts). Now, I'm thinking about trying to work out a deal with a major flight school to fast track thru meii while hopefully working part time for them (during training) as an A&P.
End goal is to be a Designated Examiner. I have no idea if that plan is possible, but I'm tired of grinding in something I don't enjoy. I'd rather work my ass off again in aviation, to at least end my working days doing something I love and miss.
I'd be interested in knowing how the SIM training works out. That wasn't an option in the late 90's for me.
Good for you. So you put on pause being a husband and be your wife's kid for 3 months. Lucky!
No, I was still a good husband… And I am very fortunate to be married to such a supportive wife!
@@trent_dyrsmid she’s a keeper. Bless her heart

Seeing and hearing a lot of UA-camrs stories on how they became pilots gets me super excited and yours is my favorite so far and I’m trying to get ahead of it early at 23-24 years old but I need assistance on the time planning piece with a few other obstacle in the way that I’d need assistance with. But this video has definitely gotten me even more excited and motivated to get my license and I can’t wait to start.
Glad to hear it! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌

Hi Trent, love the videos. I am in a very similar position that you were in back in May. I'm currently 53 and I'm looking to start my training in January next year. Like you I had done about 100 hours of flying trying to get my PPL in 1995. I was about ready to take my PPL check ride when I ran out of money. I had just completed my second long cross country and passed my PPL written with a 98. Long story short I ended up graduating with a degree in aviation management and went on to become a successful web developer and filmmaker for many years. I now have a wife and family and now I'm ready to try going back to flight school to finish what I started 30 years ago. Watching your videos have been super inspiring to me and I want to follow your blueprint. Like you I will have 100% focus with no distractions to get it done. Thank you for sharing your journey and keep up the great work.
Grey….sounds like you’re in a good spot. If you’d like to do accelerated training, please check this out flywithtrent.com/flight-training/

Trent, I love watching your inspiring videos. At 17 I turned down a free ride to the USAFA and have been teaching since. You are such an informative and positive role-model for anyone looking to fly later in life. Much love to you man!
