Hi Garrett! I’m a retired Air Force pilot and now a Southwest Airlines Captain. My sons are 15 & 16 years old and they want to fly for SWA also but the civilian route is so different from my military path. Your video was awesome to learn how the current system works to build time and ratings. Thanks so much brother!! I hope you come fly for us soon. 🇺🇸👍

Care to shed any light on why the minimum amount of hours to join one of the major airlines is 1500?
Not sure if you know this but here in Sweden, education is free. Yes, there is free education to become an airline pilot with a b737 rating and an option to also get a ppl in the course. There is even 2 schools, one in Lund and one in Västerås. I know EASA have different requirements but I think the minimum flight hours is 200 so you get that plus they have agreement with both Norwegian airlines and SAS so you basically have hours as an apprentice first officer there as well, during school and if you arent a complete moron, you will land a job there, if they survive corona. They take 20 students each year. One is starting in the spring and the other in the fall. All you need to pay for is a medical, an pilot aptitude test, a complete degree for your upper secondary school (we start at age 7 and go 9 years Foundation school, then 3 years of upper secondary so kind of college). I used to work as a cabin crew and im going to work my grades up besides running my business because it is just too good of an opportunity to pass down on.

Captain Garrett, Thank you for such an informative video! I didn’t get the part where you talked about building hours and then after you went straight down to AA ??? The school I go to , they offer CFI employment and after building hours, employment with Piedmont Airlines, where after you can get a job w American Airlines...
First of all think you for your video :) I have a quick question, I know that you said we don't need to do a bachelor degree at University to be a pilot but what is the advantage if we do it?
Tia Thenel from my understanding from reading the comments, if you don’t have an associates/bachelors then you likely won’t work for a big airline and mostly regional
Tia Thenel The advantage would be having a better chance of getting a job at a major airline. I recommend you do get a degree if your goal is to work for a major.
I left American Airlines SEA base for ramp in 2012 because they tried to get me to breakride in the cockpit for a 757 tow that I was not properly trained for. Could have destroyed the airplane or worse injured some of my ground workers.. Better to quit then to get fired right
Curtis Simpson probably works out better anyways. There’s an $18k difference in going to them Zero Hours vs. Private Pilot. If you can get a Private Pilot somewhere else for only $8k-$10k you still save 8-10k in the end
Curtis Simpson I saw that you need an Associate's Degree, 60+ college credit hours, equivalent work experience, or military experience. You need an US Citizenship (or Permanent Resident). You need an FAA First Class Medical Certificate and adhere to Height and Weight Limits. Would registered nurse with an associates degree quslify? Would I still need an FAA First Class Medical Certificate?
My husband has worked for Piedmont as ramp/ CSA agent for since November 2014. About 2.5 years ago they came to us and said if you have certain criteria met we want to give you a nice sign on bonus and a contracted spot with us. He has been time build as a CFI/CFII and next week he goes to ATP- CTP training. What tips do you have for FO and ATP training with Piedmont? Did Piedmont pay you while at ATP- CTP course?
Soloed at 11 hrs, private at 40, Instrument at 4 month, commercial at 7 months, now working on CFI :) if you want a job other than CFI you gotta be willing to move or just get really lucky
hey. i have a stupid question. please answer. so, all the flights you said that you did like for example marthas vineyard. who keeps track of these flight hours? and how do you show it to the airlines
This was incredibly informative, thank you! As far as I’m aware, don’t most Major airlines require a bachelors degree to apply? Is the ultimate goal of a airline pilot to advance from regional to major? Or is there even much of a difference?
Hey Garett are you telling me that i don't need to get a bachelor in aviation and that i just need to go to any flight school and get my Licences and Instrument Ratings and airlines would employ me even if there is someone who also got his licences and hours but also got a bachelor? TBH i found this video really confusing, im currently doing an integrated course and already got my ppl but you telling me that im wasting my time and money when going to college really disturb me. Please enlightened me
zebadman n GO TO COLLEGE!! 😂 the degree itself doesn’t matter much, but they really want that at the majors. Maybe for a regional it’s fine, but you don’t want your whole career at a regional.

I didn’t get the part where you talked about building hours and then after you went straight down to AA ??? The school I go to , they offer CFI employment and after building hours, employment with Piedmont Airlines, where after you can get a job w American Airlines...
What school did you attended?
Legacy aviation in PA
First of all think you for your video :)
I have a quick question, I know that you said we don't need to do a bachelor degree at University to be a pilot but what is the advantage if we do it?
Tia Thenel from my understanding from reading the comments, if you don’t have an associates/bachelors then you likely won’t work for a big airline and mostly regional
Tia Thenel The advantage would be having a better chance of getting a job at a major airline. I recommend you do get a degree if your goal is to work for a major.
I left American Airlines SEA base for ramp in 2012 because they tried to get me to breakride in the cockpit for a 757 tow that I was not properly trained for. Could have destroyed the airplane or worse injured some of my ground workers.. Better to quit then to get fired right
Becoming a pilot, which is most important and beautiful part of this job?? I think it's pretty cool job for you.
What do you think of United flight academy??
I called ATP and they told me in order to be eligible to be a student. You must already have your private licence or at least 50 college credits.
Curtis Simpson probably works out better anyways. There’s an $18k difference in going to them Zero Hours vs. Private Pilot. If you can get a Private Pilot somewhere else for only $8k-$10k you still save 8-10k in the end
Tony Rivera yeah sort of it’s 63995 from ppl or 80995 from zero time....
Curtis Simpson
I saw that you need an Associate's Degree, 60+ college credit hours,
equivalent work experience, or
military experience. You need an US Citizenship (or Permanent Resident). You need an FAA First Class Medical Certificate and adhere to Height and Weight Limits.
Would registered nurse with an associates degree quslify? Would I still need an FAA First Class Medical Certificate?
It’s so weird flying so long from right seat then fly left seat. Takes a min lol
Great video! Awesome intro and logo, what editor did you use?
fiverr!
Thank you Garrett, nice advice!
When did you take your written test for your private license towards the end of before your check ride ?
Were you a CFI at Epic Flight Academy in NSB?
This was super helpful!!! Thank you
Thanks a lot!!! God bless you for the lessons you giving us. 🙏
Do you recommend at least getting your associate's degree or would it be acceptable to go into the ATP straight out of High School?
hey. i have a stupid question. please answer. so, all the flights you said that you did like for example marthas vineyard. who keeps track of these flight hours? and how do you show it to the airlines
This was incredibly informative, thank you!
As far as I’m aware, don’t most Major airlines require a bachelors degree to apply? Is the ultimate goal of a airline pilot to advance from regional to major? Or is there even much of a difference?
With a high demand in pilots today, not anymore. However like the inflation that went up on everything, so did the flight schools.
Just got into American airline cadet program working on 890 hours have my IR and my CPL
