I had a good friend who flew for Pan-American world Airways for many years as a first officer. He stayed as a first officer well into his 50s, and he could bid any trip he wanted on the airline anywhere, anytime. He always told me the same thing. His quality of life was so much better than if he was a junior captain. When Pan Am folded, he decided to take a deal that was offered, as United had acquired Pan Am’s Pacific routes. If you don't wanna be a CA fine, but don't wear 4 bars for youtube. People work for that. They carry the responsibility. It's not only seniority. You gotta put in the work.
Hey Garrett, I got a question for you or anybody willing to answer. Is everybody in the company in the same seniority pool or does is go by aircraft, FO, Captain? For example, when you do decide to upgrade to captain, will you be at the bottom of the barrel for captains or will you have seniority over people that joined the company after you but upgraded before you? Hope that makes sense. Thanks!
Everybody is technically in the same seniority bank overall, but then it is broken down to base/aircraft type and CA/FO. And yes you are also correct, if he upgrades to captain later he would have a higher seniority than someone who joined the company later but upgraded earlier
Ignorant question as I'm looking to change careers. Is seniority based entirely on how long you've been with a company or is it based on accumulated flight time? Also, does that seniority reset as you change bases or aircraft? Just curious if there's a way for a new pilot to accelerate or catch up to those with a more casual, quality of life focus that have been with a company for a while.
Seems like it’s short term gain for possible long term pain. Why not put in the work now, build your seniority as captain, put in the long hours now while you’re young and no one is at home to care - no wife, no children to miss out on. Put in the long days, lower quality of life now so when you do have family and children you can choose your schedule so it works for family life. Set yourself up now for the kind of family time you want in the future.
Could you bid with only 2.5 years of FO seniority for a junior captain position on the B737 at a junior base like NY? Or are you just emphasizing the QOL is a higher priority that you'd rather remain in NY because of the top 10% seniority, versus moving back to the Charlotte base?
Mia or nyc ca is probably the most junior, he wants to remain an FO just so he can bid and get what trips he wants versus getting a pay increase and going back on reserve or not being able to get the trips he wants
@@equilibrium788 I understand his motives. I was just curious on whether he had the chance to bid for a junior captain after only two and a half years with the airline or not. That was my question.
Being able to bid for captain is solely based on seniority (and having the hours eligible for being a captain). Since he was at the start of a hiring boom, his seniority shoots up fast so at a junior base like NYC and as a FO, he’s at the top in seniority of his group (Base, Aircraft, position). If he wants to fly a 777 out of Dallas, well, he’d be pretty junior as Dallas tends to be a very senior base.
@@matrixwalker I dont even think he could hold widebody first officer yet. I think 2017 or 2018 hire date is the most junior widebody first officer right now at his airline.
you don't need a degree, you must get an ATPL (air transport pilots license). In order to get this, you must get a CPL (commercial pilot license), ME/IR (multi engine piston aircraft and instrument rating), MCC (Multi Crew cooperation), and ATPL theory exams passed. This will give you a "frozen ATPL". Once you have gotten this, you need your type rating which allows you to fly large jet airliners. Usually you apply for a job as a first officer at an airline and they provide this training, but you must pay for it. You need to now build up your hours to 1500 hours of flight time to get your ATPL unfrozen. Hope this helped.
Just never going to be a better time to upgrade to Captain. Seniority will keep going up and you'll always have to reset to go to captain. I wouldn't put it off for too long if I were you
Of course possibly by scam as if you went from pilot to contractor to can’t pay your employees and need help from Belgium home because your mom passed away what a shame people would do to someone and take someone’s identity!
didnt you say you would love to be a 787 Dreamliner pilot one day? going to miami for a month? better learn Spanish quick, you dont have long left before you go since this video was made about a week ago now.
Your pay might be similar to your dad’s A330 captain pay back in the day but money went so much farther back then….every passing day our money becomes more and more worthless
You're screwing yourself in the long run. You'll likely regret not earning and investing more now. You'll regret it when you have a family and when you're older, nearing retirement or if you lose your medical. You didn't learn from your dad's experience. You'd be smart to get out of NYC, live somewhere more affordable, buy a house and earn more money. You've got it all backwards.
Has not sense! So, why did you study all that time if you have no desire of achieve better position in your career! Is this actual generation a waste?!!! 😶🌫️
Working hard doesnt get you anywhere as a pilot for a US based union airline. Seniority is everything. If he upgrades now to captain, he might get paid more but his schedule will suck for a very long time. He values his schedule more than a larger paycheck. I dont blame him one bit. As he said, 70% of the captains in his base and equipment get to pick their schedule first and then he would get the leftover scraps. At a first officer, he gets to pick his schedule before 90% of the first officers do so he gets what he wants.
It's so refreshing to hear someone who's choosing quality of life as a priority. We place so much focus and value on "the hustle" and the cost is family, friends, partners, etc.
Man your energy when you talk about aviation and the smile that you get is exactly how I feel when I think about aviation. It has been my dream to a 330 pilot for Air Transat (I’m Canadian) since I was 7 years old. Life got in the way and I had to put my dream aside for a bit. But I never forgot about it. I’m turning. 30 this year and I promised myself to make my dream come true before I hit 40. You’re an inspiration man ❤
My son is off to flight school in September... he was born at the perfect time to bring his dream into fruition, and making it to captain faster is the cherry on top!!
@@dustyrhodes2717 No, it's the perfect time. It was a perfect time 8 years ago, sure, but there is a massive pilot shortage atm and this generation is not interested in becoming a pilot as in the past. Factor in that there is a huge wave of pilots coming up for retirement, this combination will definitely get them to Captain status and seniority much quicker.
I agree with you 75%. Unfortunately, on the mainline Bus side I’ve flown with some Captains who were…horrendous. Landing with unacceptably low amounts of fuel, making bad decisions, not wanting any input or, on rare occasions, berating me. So take that into your QOL calculation, it’s so much better being in charge and setting the tone (as you know from the regionals). Hope all the Captains you fly with are great in the meantime. Take care.

@@enriqueosuna he could probably bid captain and get it but he would be very low seniority, sorry if I misread your question
That shirt is what; an extra small? I used to try to wear my clothes like this too; how you get that thing on and off without ripping it?
What degree do you need to be a pilot
You don’t need a major
thank you for your help
you don't need a degree, you must get an ATPL (air transport pilots license).
J@@albalqanican you get license online
@@albalqani You don't need a degree but it is highly recommended if you want to get hired at any airline company.
Could you teach me yourself
Very nice!
So why are you wearing four bars
Just never going to be a better time to upgrade to Captain. Seniority will keep going up and you'll always have to reset to go to captain. I wouldn't put it off for too long if I were you
What's the shade of your teeth? My guess - bleach 2. Am I right?
You have 4 bars..I thought FO is 3 bars.
He lucky true
Have you spoken to garret before
is that an AP on your wrist?? XD
❤❤Oh my dear, you are so sweet, mashallah
Have you spoken to garret before
Thank you for information❤😂
737 😅. Wide bodied all the way but not for part time jockies
8de Março 2024 meu BOA noite ❤😂😢😊
Some leave if they get wealthy. Friend made $6 million in crypto so left last year
Of course possibly by scam as if you went from pilot to contractor to can’t pay your employees and need help from Belgium home because your mom passed away what a shame people would do to someone and take someone’s identity!
@@stephaniebaker4828 huh?
Don’t need to go into more detail but yes it’s happening I don’t understand why they can’t put a stop to it!
❤😮
Hello.....how are you.....💞❤
✌️
Do you work for JetBlue?
And Airline Captains Salary Is Definitely Higher!1🥂👌💰
Your quite cute.
Happy for you😂.
didnt you say you would love to be a 787 Dreamliner pilot one day? going to miami for a month? better learn Spanish quick, you dont have long left before you go since this video was made about a week ago now.
I used to like this channel but then i noticed he uses his body for clickbait.
Your pay might be similar to your dad’s A330 captain pay back in the day but money went so much farther back then….every passing day our money becomes more and more worthless
C‘mon dude, youre flying for 3 years only, you didnt even get the time and experience yet to see the perks of been a captain
You've got it all backwards.
lame.
Yup. Some positions require more of your time and life although more money is coming and sometimes you have to ask yourself if it’s worth it.
You’re an inspiration man ❤
Nice to see that someone prefers quality of life before money! Your priorities are right!
So why do you have 4 bars again?
My son is off to flight school in September... he was born at the perfect time to bring his dream into fruition, and making it to captain faster is the cherry on top!!
What do you mean when you say, "he was born at the perfect time?"
Exactly. He was born at the perfect time if he started several years ago
LoL that makes no sense: Perfect time would have been 8 years ago. He’s missing out on a bow wave of hiring.
Take care.
by yur pay chart FO 2yrs on B738 739 gets $141/ hr.... so why u say u get $200/hr ??? whaaa ?
omg dont get it..
yur FO why u wearing 4 stripes 👚 shirt?
An awesome collab video would be you with Paul Holte from MyLayoverLife
It would be amazing if they fly in the same airline. 🥰 I follow them both.
I would prolly do an onlyfans collab with bruh myself.
The industry in the US is so much better than the UK. The quality of life and the pay just doesn’t compare. I am an experience long haul captain in the UK and the SFO’s in the US even in short haul are earning more then I do and with a better quality of life. You have been VERY lucky!
I had a French buddy who flew for Condor. Captain 747 at 34 years old. Small company, good timing, and a superb individual. Dude lived and breathed to fly.
condor is not small
Best video you’ve made in like a year! Thank you Garret for sharing
Aspiring pilot here- thank you so much for the insight! I love your content!
Then why the four stripes?
Once again great content. With that said many may not agree with me but I feel make money while you’re young and not tied down. Quality of life is so important but more so when older. You want to be able to retire younger and enjoy that quality time when you’re older. Just my opinion. ❤
Because your name isn’t Captain Joe. Wait. He’s a First Officer that calls himself Captain
You are 100% making the right decision to put quality of life over a position. U can always pick up an extra trip to boost the monthly income. Being on call or reserves is no fun. I did it in health care and getting a call at 0230 was anything but fun. 😎
I’m a captain, 4 stripes.
I have no FO.
What am I?
A poor chopper hopper.
😂
