  • “The pieces of gear that we can rely on are well built with some amount of creativity in mind and open up your brain.”
There is no shortage of this type of gear in our latest episode of Show Us Your Junk! Joel Hamilton takes us on a tour of Studio G in Brooklyn New York, home to a generous amount of impossibly rare studio gear.
But wait, there’s more! Combine all of those great compressors and preamps n’ stuff with a crap load of amps, bizarre instruments, and Joel’s enlightened DIY punk ethic. Seems like you’ve got yourself a really interesting joint here.
“Pre-production is not just based on my own personal theological approach to recording. It’s driven by what they’re trying to express.”
If they are trying to express being harpooned through the torso or listening to “The Who” in a church (in the back of their car), then it’s really going be a great session! Yo what?
    Just watch it!

It seems all these producers fall into two types: very precise or very free and easy

That's probably pretty accurate. It's the artist or the engineer, I suppose.

I like how the video starts with a Sesame Street session and ends with liking the idea of boarding a ship and killing humans

What an awesome studio. It’s like a museum. I love that he has such passion for the history of everything he owns. Incidentally, the Dunes is one of my favourite dirt pedals too. Sounds utterly classic, but totally versatile, dynamic and usable as well.

I'd like to tell earthquaker as a whole that these videos are invaluable in a time where learning from ppl in real life is impossible due to the horrible gatekeeper mentality of everyone down to the employees at the local music store up to some real mainstream artists if you started a school I'd enroll js

Yo you’re definitely right about that, thankfully the places near me aren’t like that. But we’ve all experienced some form of elitism from somebody at some music-related shop. Really sucks.
Keep at it bro. Watch some Pensado’s Place too! It focuses on the engineering aspect of music recording, more in-the-box stuff, but it’s INVALUABLE INFORMATION, just like these videos.
But his videos are a straight university course quality type of thing. You WILL learn how to engineer and produce quality music from his videos.

This was by far my favorite one of these I've seen. I learned so much from Joel, and like his ethos on creating records is so fascinating. Please never stop.
And also, one video editor to another, mad props to your editor(s). These videos are all amazing.
