Show Us Your Junk! Ep. 33 - Aaron Espinoza (The Ship) | EarthQuaker Devices

- Throughout February, EQD's "Show Us Your Junk" video series is showcasing the "Rock Block." It's an actual city block in Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighborhood that houses the studios of veteran producers, mixers, and musicians Aaron Espinoza (The Ship), Rob Schnapf (Mant Sound Studios), and Dave Trumfio (King Size Sound Labs). Also included is the Rock Block "OG" Manny Nieto, whose Suplex Audio has since moved to a new location.
Producer, mixer, engineer, and musician Aaron Espinoza has operated the studio The Ship as a collective with friends and other musical-production professionals for 20 years.
Espinoza is also half of the band Earlimart with Ariana Murray. The post-rock duo has released six albums and had their songs placed all over television and movies, including episodes of Ugly Betty, Vampire Diaries and House, and the comedy-drama film Humboldt County. Aaron didn't intern at any studio. Instead, he learned the hard way by constantly recording and recording more bands, learning what works and what doesn't along the way.
Today, The Ship has an impressive array of gear, mixing vintage and just plain old and unusual junk with new and boutique offerings. The Ship's client list includes The Breeders, Kanye West, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, Elliot Smith, Carly Ray Jepsen, and many more. Yet, despite the impressive gear and client list collected and earned over time and through maintaining relationships, Espinoza works to keep The Ship affordable. That desire to make it easy for young or just broke bands to make good records harkens back to his early days as a band member and budding producer, recording his friends' bands for free simply because capturing the music is what matters most.
For more from Aaron, head to the EQD blog and check out his Talk About Your Junk. Wherein he discusses his early boombox overdub experiments, his favorite producer and mixers, how being self-taught is a challenging but rewarding road to take, and the importance of establishing and maintaining good relationships. Also, find out how Aaron acquired one of Brian Wilson's old pianos, Film composing legend Ennio Morricone's Crumar synth, and The Doors Ray Manzarek's organ. Wow!

woooooooooooo! VICE COOLER !!!
Man, this series is unbelievable. I’m so glad earthquaker is doing this. And it seems to be soooo popular and people love it. Thank you so much!
YES!!!! thx EARTHQUAKER !!! rad people, making rad stuff!
In my early 20's back in like 2010, I recorded an album at the Ship with my band and went straight to 2" tape. No computers. I remember not being able to find many studios that had a working 2" tape machine at the time which was an MCI JH16 2″. I met Aaron and we hit it off. He thought were kind of crazy for 20 year old kids in a local psych-rock band wanting to go do everything entirely analog. We spent probably around a week at the Ship and met Zac Carper who was Aaron's assistant and learned about his band FILDAR. Eventually a year later, Aaron invited us to play at the Eagle Rock Music Festival on Kingsize/Ship Stage. Our band "broke up" about a year later, but those were some of my favourite times as a musician, fiddling around with gear in the Ship and learning about music, gear, etc. from Aaron. Good times.
That piano is heart stoppingly gorgeous.
I saw this episode at least 3 times, I think it's my favorite of them all. That piano at the end just kills me.
Its pretty touching🥲
Absolutely gorgeous piano!
These past few videos have been great!
Aaron seems like a great guy. That piano sound is unreal!
That piano is unlike any other U3 i've ever heard...super mellow, but still clear and even. Better than a grand in some cases. U seem great too reign charger!!!! ae
Love that he plays with his stuff. The last piece with the piano sounds amazing!
Thx so much...not much of a pianist...but LOVE to dabble. ae
@@theshipstudio6946 I'm surprised you managed to stop playing with your junk long enough to reply to youtube comments.
A fantastic episode. Seeing Aaron talk about people that have truly changed his life and perspective but that have since passed was sad to see but heartfelt and beautiful. He saw them as people first and foremost, but made sure to credit and appreciate who they were as creative individuals. It spoke volumes. Rest in peace to Elliott, Richard, Mac..
Can't wait for that Rob Schnapf episode ahhhhh!!
thanks for watching with us!
Yeh man... all 3 of em...so good. changed my life for sure! ae
Can't express how much I love EQD's films. Grateful to get an inside look at these artists' spaces and hear their stories. Inspiring.
Earlimart was a FANTASTIC BAND!

not everybody is Liberace... but we will mildly consider forcing them all to play from now on.

That ending with the piano was just perfect. Now I want to buy a piano and I don't even know how to play.
These are the best adverts ever made in the history of capitalism and I'm so happy.

Piano at the end was magic.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Great series! binge watched all the episodes over the last day.
YES YES YES!!!!!
I had no idea The Folk Implosion ever recorded at The Ship, that's awesome. All these bands I love are all connected! I'm really hoping we get some early Earlimart/Pine Marten/Silversun Pickups recordings on Bandcamp or something at some point, especially Pine Marten. Those guys were next level and I'm still pissed they only had one album.
PINE MARTEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! actually workin on gettin some of those old "lost recordings" out on the interwebs soon. till then...check new EARLIMART at bandcamp. New tune featured in this doc. Thx so much!!! ae
That piano ... man I'm stocked from the mellowness of that. Thanks for a great video at a wonderful studio!

This was truly great. Aaron comes across as a humble and sweet person. Thrashing on the Mustang then playing the piano part at the end... He's inspired me to try and record again. Thank you.
This Deluge of SUYJ has been very rewarding!
DELUGE!!! DAMN...i gotta use that one more often! love it. ae
I’m so gonna record some tunes there someday. What a magical spot with such cool history! ⚓️🏆

@@EarthQuakerDevices awesome
@@EarthQuakerDevices OH SHIT!!!! MY HEEEERO
This is first time I've heard of someone else doing the dual ghetto blaster multi tracking. I thought it was just me. I had a shitty Casio keyboard as my drum machine. I ran that through a clean amp, eq'd to get the drum "thump", with a home made 1/8" to 1/4 cable from the headphone jack of the keyboard. Then down tuned my guitar to A, ran through another amp. Played along with the tape and recorded with a ghetto blaster. Then played that tape through the clean amp, played a standard tuned guitar with the tape and recorded with another ghetto blaster. Then took the tape with the guitar, "bass", and drum machine and played that through the clean amp. I ran a "real mic" through another clean amp, and recorded vocals and tape with a ghetto blaster. It took about an hour, sounded shitty, and used William Blake's "A Poison Tree" for lyrics. I couldn't afford a four track at 14 years old but I made it happen. Early 80's home recording!
DAMN!!! that is advanced...BADASS! ae
Just had breakfast with Aaron this morning chatting this topic as did as well Ha EQD for life!
Awesome more Elliott stories. More
Great Episode! That piano!!!
SO GOOD! thx...get over here and record it! ae
that u3 sound, holy smokes. gorgeous.
sure does...i owe u an email too!!! ae
This must be my favorite Show Us Your Junk episode until now. And that says a lot
DANG....thx BASS ! ae
Great episode. Got super lucky with that U3… Yamaha pianos are great, but also known for a very bright tone. Kind of the opposite of what that one is doing!
100% all the others i tried were very bright... lucky penny.thx for watchin! ae
The sound of the piano 👌
good shit. get over here...lets record that sucker!
The Sam Amp is so rad!!!
This has to be one of the best, show us your junk Aron is like the coolest dood, reminds me of my uncle even looks like him a bit when he was younger. Not to take anything away from the greatness of Sylvia Massy's videos.
I AM YOUR UNCLE!!!! HA
2:19 It's alright. Most of us watching this are hoarders too.
haa
Sam from Highland Music is a complete badass! Rad to see on here! I assume he picked that up while Earlimart was on tour…probably played Bottletree
YEH SAM!!!! u nailed it. stumbled into music shop. played the sam amp...played bottletree. went home. came back to alabama. BOUGHT the amp. played the bottletree again. RINSE AND REPEAT! ae
He's in Earlimart? Cool! I saw them with Ozma way back in the day at a place called Kilby Court in Salt Lake. Good show!
kilby courttttt whats upp
WHOA!!! I remember playin on those astro turf covered pallets at KILBY COURT. Thx for comin to the show!!! ae
That anecdote about Elliott Smith was really touching. Thanks for the ep guys
That man changed my life....think about him every day! ae
His words about Elliott Smith are touching.

Can anyone tell me if there is a recording of the piano tune at the end?
Please, no more fun facts, I’m in fun facts overload! Great great video, I love recording and gear, too.

It’s so weird how nautical stuff was in the zeitgeist in the late 90’s . June of 44, Storm and stress, nautical Almanac etc
cuz we were poor...and decorated via thrift stores...an abundance of nautical stuff at thrift stores back then! Wonder why? kids of seafaring parents...giving away all the goods
Im assuming that broadcast console is what the hudson broadcast is based on? Cool stuff.
Im not familiar. whats the deal with hudson broadcast? ae
Whats the name for the 1st song??? How can I find it??
Wazzzzup Aarón!
WAZZZZZUUUUP ?!!!! ae
Please do the hidden gem in the inland empire called World Class Audio run by Shawn Sullivan!
That piano diddy at the end reminds me of a national song and i cant figure out which one.
Maybe a slowed down Nobody Else Will Be There? Similar piano tone at least
Old deep sea diving equipment is horrifying to me lol
isnt that a sort of "condition" ? a phobia perhaps? just curious.ae
Aarons the goat
maybe so!
we shall see...got ol Bob Schnapf up to bat! ae
Aaron seems like a very dope dude.
so dope he should be unjustly classified as a schedule ONE drug
HAAAAAAAAA thx man!
@@EarthQuakerDevices oh shit!!!! who's writing this gold?!!!
Great interview, thanks EarthQuakerDevices. One thing, is it just me but what's with the endless refocussing of every photo, not very pleasant?
We're punk. It's art. Thanks for subscribing and watching our vids!
is what he plays on the piano at the end anything specific?
hmmmm probably some EARLIMART derivative. check out the new EARLIMART tune at bandcamp....that tune was used in the intro. ae
