The most insane pedal collection ever! - Jamie Stillman Interview at EarthQuaker Day 2018

  • Interview with Jamie Stillman at home in his basement where he has his insane vintage pedal collection. But it's also where EarthQuaker Devices as we know it today began. Jamie Stillman takes you through the entire story, while I mix it all with images from his crazy gear collection and scenes from EarthQuaker Day 2018. This was a true highlight of my life. Something I will never forget.
    Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
    Sorry for the slightly blurry images at times. It's dark in a basement, you know. So my camera would go out of focus at times. But if you're a nerd like me, you will devour everything Jamie has to say anyway
    It would mean the world to us if you followed our social channels:

    Blew my damn mind when he pulled out the Morning Dew. I think I made about 150 of them in 2006 - 2007. Great to hear my work inspired him!

    For all my guitar life I have had a Boss Compressor Sustainer pedal on my board. So I always thought "meh...I got the CS-2, I am good, no need to go anywhere else" and that was it. Then I was at a clinic at Sam Ash on a Saturday and one of the other students had his little board and he had The Warden Optical compressor. I just casually inquired about it and he said that it was his "secret weapon". I asked if I could try it out and plugged into it. Holy shit, this is the most musical pedal I have ever heard. It takes your tone and makes it sound like you're in a studio. It is $200 but oh so worth every penny. I still have the CS-2, it's just in a drawer now. Take my advice: Just get one. You can come back here to thank me.

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 років тому +5

      The Warden is so criminally underrated, it's insane! Think it's because EQD are more known for making more spacey/otherworldly effects, and that makes people disregard a humble compressor in their lineup. But it's 100% my favorite compressor. Just makes everything sound better ❤

    Although mostly known for its otherworldly designs, I own their most common, the Palisades. I chose it as my main overdrive and over many others. Very versatile tube screamer-ish. These guys do it all very well. Always nice when the head of the company is as cool as this wizard.

    • @thepedalzone

      EQD do everything so well. One of my favourite pedals of theirs is actually their The Warden Compressor. It's so damn underrated because it lives far from the wild experimental and otherworldly nature that so many of their other pedals contain. I just think it's cool that a company is equally adept at making allround bread-and-butter effects as well as crazy innovative special fx ☺

    I'd never heard the Arpanoid until after watching this video. I've looked for that effect forever! The old DoD Tech4x had an effect called the Pixelator that did the Arpanoid thing and mixed it with a bitcrusher fuzz. I used that Arpanoid thing to write songs a few times!

    The Dunes overdrive is the first EQD pedal I've ever owned and it's amazing. I also have a 90's Black Russian Big Muff Pi and, when running the big muff into the dunes, they stack extraordinary well, I was very impressed with both. I'm currently looking at......EQD's entire line of pedals LOL I want more!

    Amazing video as always Stefan! What an great interview-perfect length, great mix of history/personal/professional--really showcased Jamie's passion for what he's so lovingly created. Oh- and your soundtrack reminded me I gotta grab the wet-only switch for my Plus Pedal- you tackled that beast yet? despite its imperfections-I think its my favorite pedal ever-and not to sound like a new age guru but it's worth can only really be experienced not explained.

      Happy you liked the interview, man! I could listen to Jamie’s stories forever 😊 And the Plus pedal does look like fun. Only tried it briefly at NAMM though.

    • @winstonsmith8236

      oh man, especially for a lover of ambient playing...the Plus really is in a league of its own. Being a big EHX Freeze guy I was stoked on the simple sustain aspect of it but it is SO DEEP. The layering of notes into chord structures, the efx loop, the rise and tail control- It really is an extension of your instrument, really intuitive and expressive. haha- you're gonna have a field day with it- i can't wait to hear/see you review. It was made for folks like us who just simply - love sound.

    No way!- been wanting an Arpanoid since it came out, finally was able to order one this morning ( before watching this!), so amped to use it. It's not the first pedal you "need", so it has taken awhile to come to being able to order one, cash flow wise, but I can am so happy Jamie made this pedal- rad! Screw the "tap tempo" haters btw... Learn to deal with it! As far as I'm concerned tap tempo is a new fangled luxury, it's fine but people should learn to be creative and also accept that sometimes limitations make them more creative and more interesting, not just as musicians... Ok rant over....huff huff...

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 років тому +1

      This is rad! And couldn’t agree more with the creative power born from limitations. I just don’t think the world was ready for the Arpanoid when it came out. It’s more an instrument in its own right than an actual effect 😊
