I got this excellent question from a follower last week:
"I’m looking for buying a new computer screen/monitor and would like a modern 34” or 38” ultra wide screen. But because of my small room I have some problems to not have the screen interfere with the line of sight of the speakers. I could place them higher and tilt them down. Or place them closer right next to the screen etc."

Computer screens are getting bigger and bigger, but is there a too big?
Especially if you’re room is small and you can’t place your speakers endlessly far apart.

Thanks Jesco. Your speaker placement advice is super helpful, even for those of us that just want to get the most out of our speakers at home, without going crazy with room treatment.
I think this is the only video I’ve seen cover this issue .. thanks! Any chance you could also do a video on optimal speaker distances from the ear, and how to judge this optimal / possible / ideal distance, based on speaker size, power etc.

If you prefer not looking left to right as mentioned, worth thinking about a larger screen but rotated to portrait allowing windows stacked on top of each other.
Many have the track/mixer windows that way anyway if using a laptop with a second monitor above.
Unless working with video having screen in landscape is just convention.

Great video as always. I have a well treated room but was getting a bad slapback delay in the listening position and worked out it was coming from the computer screen and a bass trap with a membrane on the back wall so had to add some difusion on top of the trap to fix the problem, also i noticed that if i push the computer screen further back behind my speakers instead of parallel, the feeling of depth in the stereo feild opened up much more.

Which are the acoustic panels that you use ? And the bass traps that we can see ?
All examples here have the display pretty much between the speakers. I would like to to hear your comments about a setup where the displays are more in front of the speakers and therefore the sound is partially reflected back from the computer monitors.
My new control room is nearing completion. I will run my standard set up of my near fields stand mounted and woofers 64.5" apart. (may adjust once set up)The near fields are around 30" off the front wall and my new Samsung 32" curved monitors will be placed around 19" off the front wall. The video monitors are set on devices I built with acoustic insulation in them and binary diffusion facing me. Jesco's Better Bass Trap course is worth every penny. Thanks for all you do Jesco.

Another straight-forward video...thanks! Regarding speaker placement, my room has an 8' ceiling. My ears and tweeters just happen to be at 4' from the floor. I'm told this "mid-way between floor and ceiling" is NOT a good place for the tweeters to be. Which is better/worse...raise the speakers and angle them downward or leaving them at the mid-way height of the room?
Super interesting! I just got a 49" curved monitor (the best thing that's ever happened to me!) and if I'm too close, I get an awful ringing at 410Hz. I gotta make sure to back up to the mix position in order to not hear that. My speakers are a little farther apart than is ideal, but I have 15 of your 8" bass traps from Build a Better Bass Trap that are taking care of the major issues!
Hello! I am in a similar situation right now where I got myself a 49" ultra wide monitor which I am super happy with, but now I want to buy myself a pair of studio monitors and with my current desk setup its impossible to get that equilateral triangle. My monitors would be roughly 140 cm apart but I am sitting at 100cm distance to the hypothetical studio monitors. How did you tackle that problem or what is your current distance between the monitors and from you to the monitors?
@@lucus1717 I just push my chair back a little bit when I'm doing some critical listening. Since I work in dialogue post production I'm usually doing the bulk of my work in headphones, then just do the final mixes on monitors with my chair pushed back a bit. Not perfect, but it's working!

I'm currently hunting for a new Studio-Room (Music Production/Mixing/Mastering). Thanks to your Guide I know what to look for when it comes to dimensions and symmetry, however, I can't find anything about door placement... Where is it best to have the studio-door? I guess it is a bad idea to have it directly in the corners because you want to use this space for corner bass traps. Having it at the back wall could be a bad choice too. Reflection points could be located there, also the door is normally made from a different material than the walls. Therfore, I consider searching for a room having sidewall door placement, near the back wall with some room left for corner bass traps. Could have the door at the sidewall mess with the stereo field?
Would love to know your thoughts/advice about this, including the factors which I should consider.
Again: I don't have the room yet, I just want to watch out for an ideal room matching all the criteria to keep the later effort to a minimum.
the older generation, even someone as pragmatic as Bob Katz, insist in taking the screens completly out of the monitor horizontal line.
they argument with comb filtering while having a glass wall at the same position the screen could go.
than they say the screen has to be behind the monitor line. logic tells me it is better in front of them (obviously without beeing in the direct sound line) because all the reflections will go in direction of the frontwall and from there mostly into the sidewall absorbtion
Hi Jesco, in your setup you are getting the very first reflections from you racks angled ”roof”. Can that cause some canceling?
What about a wall-mounted 43" TV? Sounds like I could just move the equalateral triangle off the wall a little bit with some speaker stands?
I tried ultrawide (34"), but it was too big, got pain in my neck from moving around. I'm now on a "standard" 32" Samsung, fits my speaker setup well.
I agree with your comments. May I send you a photo of my room where I have a 70" Promethean Monitor and two 24" Lenovo monitors with LEDE acoustics.

I have to put my speakers about 50cm near the rearwall and sidewalls. Thinking best would be to put plateresonators in the corners, knowing that only low frequencies are send in all directions from the speaker.

So again, I want to follow your directions and I’m looking for a larger screen, actually, a new screen, because I have an old iMac 27” that needs replacing and I’m working on getting a Mac mini M2 Pro and I would need a new screen. What are your thoughts on dealing with reflections from computer monitors? I went from 2 flat 22" monitors to one curved ultrawide 34" and noticed that the concave shape focuses the reflections, so that I have to slightly turn the monitor to the side when mixing and mastering so it doesn't focus reflections right at me.
Easily one of the most relevant people in acoustics right now IMO. Of course, our elders in acoustics that are still around have plenty of solid information, but it can be really confusing for some because their generation wasn't nearly as concerned about bass as we are today. So much traditional acoustic advice goes out the window when you are making computer music, since so much traditional acoustic advice literally wasn't considering the ~< 90hz range all that much IMO.
Music doesn’t matter when it comes to acoustic treatment. Kicks in rock/metal does go below those 90hz and whatever you are treating below 90hz, you need treat 40,50 hz anyway to get that accurate 90 hz or any harmonic above.
This comment perplexes me. Studios have always been built with proper bass control as one of the prime criteria. Mastering suites have always been concerned with accurate bass down to the limits of human hearing. No idea where you're getting that 90Hz number from, that's absurdly high and nobody in professional audio would ever have been happy with a room or monitor system that lost accuracy below such a high frequency.

Talking about higher speakers placement - I have put my speakers 25cm higher than my ear height (and tilted ofc) so that the tweeter isnt in the middle of the room height (My room is 256cm high which means that both my head and speakers are exactly in the middle of the room) I did the bass hunter method and tried to get best possible low end for like one month of various experiments, but nothing really works except putting them really near the rear wall... The worst part is if I stand up the low-end is great XD (im 190cm tall)
Do you have any tips that might help me?

One touch screen monitor close about 50-60cm from me,another big behind the speakers on the wall. Unusually I do absorption on my desk and infront of my monitor also.

Is there any issues if I am near field at approx 70 cm triangle with the screen almost flush but I have my PC tower on the desk about 5 cm from the right speaker?

Hmmm… this just made me think it might be worth trying put a couple foam pads behind my HS8s to see if it helps with the bass reflections I’m getting in my condo’s setup. Possibly not as I’d guess it’s coming from the sub, but possibly worth trying.

Get the smallest screen you can work well on and have it as low as possible. Curved screens will introduce more acousitc problems than flat ones.
My monitors are horizontal at ear level. The 45" monitor is behind the desk, there is no interference with the speakers.

I’m firmly in the camp of having absolutely nothing in between monitors as well as nothing close to the sides either. As much free space around the speakers as possible. In between the speakers is where the magic happens!
I have some serious lowend treatment and decently controlled reverberation times which allows me to back up as you’ve mentioned. Speakers are about 6’ apart. When I listen I can almost reach out and grab the vocals. Wide stereo/spatial elements move beyond the speakers.
I still have 3 screens though. My 15” laptop and small 7” field monitor angled back on my desk. Plus my biggest 22” screen low on a rack sitting next to me on casters. So as little interference as possible is my approach.

I still didn’t figured out what my problem is… To me speakers, even high end, do not sound good. Meaning that in every scenario (different speakers in different rooms/studios) I can hear their limits or problems. I still didn’t find speakers or rooms where I can say “that sounds perfect”. Is it an ability or a course? 😅

I have my near field monitors placed on a window sill with a desk in front of it that carries my 32" 16:9 monitor. The screen does not block the line of sight to the monitors in any way, but sitting in front of the speaker plane, wouldn't it cause some comb filtering by introducing new reflection points at its sides? Could this be a real concern in terms of sound quality? Thanks!
How big your speakers are? I'm surprised because they look really small.

On Cyber Monday, I bought a 57" TV and have been using that as my studio monitor. I went too far.
This can work if you mount it on the wall and have your speakers off the wall in front of the video monitor. I did this for 3 years and it worked great. The near field speakers were over 2 feet off the wall and 68 " apart.
@@RecordProducerRob It works ok acoustically, but my room is on the smaller side so I'm sitting so close to the screen; kind of like a little kid in the 80s watching saturday morning cartoons. My neck is killing me lol
You'll be ditching that monster soon enough, just as I did my 43". Now I have a 25" in my studio. Best decision display-wise for sure, and this is coming from a fan of screen real estate
@@MiDnYTe25 yup, I moved that to the living room, and went back to my original ultra-wide monitor (32”)...sooo much better.
Side-by-side screens don't work for me, either, but I still prefer an ultrawide for the extra timeline real estate (less horizontal scrolling/paging). However, I find two stacked screens-with at least one ultrawide (on top)-is ideal. That way, I can keep my extended timeline up top with a mixer down below. The top screen sits between the monitor speakers at eye level and the bottom screen sits on the desk surface, angled up toward the viewer.
I have a 34" curved aswell as a 46" tv above it on the wall. I have some great measurements and am in the sweet spot. (I'm only having abit struggle with 1 resonance peak at around 85z, and another resonance at around 125 that i need to deal with). HOWEVER, the accoustics does not work great the other way around. Whenever i talk i have this weird echo bouncing on the table, tv and monitor almost making me dizzy lol! So the accoustics in my room is very good from the speaker point of view but from the other side - not so much :)
Ps. It actually helped moving the 34inch display from the desk to another lower desk just behind my main desk. Tilted the screen abit up towards me. I now have to "look down" on the screen which is way more comfortable to my neck aswell
The best screen is the biggest one...or 2...or 3, lol.
