Thank you VERY much for watching this episode of Show Us Your Junk! There are many great episodes on our playlist, and also more SWEET content yet to come! Stay tuned and subscribe!
I love that he almost said exactly verbatim what lee renaldo said about the cassette player
I hope he's just fuckin with the Earthquaker guys
So good! Hahaha
I noticed that too. Weird recording insider stuff perhaps.
Holy shit haha, that is a trip for sure!
sticker shown on the back is identical in each video. someone is fucking with us. lol.
18:30 he quoted the entire Lee Ranaldo speech on his Show me Yr Junk thing about that same tape recorder. Word for word.
he really did!!!! makes me think it could be an inside joke
there is no way that this wasn't planned
i realised that
Breaking my shit laughing. Word for word! What a genius!
It's SO spooky how he quotes exactly the same words and expressions..
déjà vu! This dude is such a trip. @18:33 he repeats , word for word, what Lee Ranaldo (from Sonic Youth) says describing the same cassette player in Ep. 18 (around 18:13 mark in that episode). Compare It. It is testament to how nerdy and weird Ed is and symbolizes the wack quirkiness that one can only expect from ze Deerhoof mind.
the modded strat at 14:50 is insane. inspirational stuff, Ed!
whenever I'm feeling like I have an unnatural connection to gear, I watch an episode of "Show us your Junk" and it makes me feel a lot less weird. such a great series.
We can relate!! ❤️
Wow, that cassette player is really like the holy grail for cassette artists. It has a variable speed control and everything.
Legend. Deerhoof is one of the most underrated bands of this century.
I've been a Deerhoof fan for years, but this was pleasantly surprising. I feel so inspired by Ed's inventiveness and creativity. What a cool dude. This was such a treat from start to finish!
Glad you enjoyed it!
He totally was! So excited to find this channel. ALSO HOLY FUCK DO I NEED AN EARTH QUAKE PEDAL. I was always an electro harmonix guy. I haven’t had a working overdrive or chorus ( or any pedal ) since I stopped playing in a band 8 years ago. Now it’s weird wonky iOS synth madness I’ve fallen back in love with guitar again.. Not that you asked Sadfay! Sorry. Ha. I wish I could get a stimulus check to get a damn overdrive or delay. I’ve ever heard of Earthquake but I’m gg to wait and not buy second hand. They are super affordable apparently.
EarthQuakerDevices wow I’m a psycho. I didn’t see your teams comment on here.... I commented here in the first place to tell sadfay that he needs to check out the new Deerhoof album that came out. Unbelievable. I just stumbled upon it last night and now I find this interview! Up next Lee Ronaldo? yes please.
He almost quoted Lee Ranaldo word for word about the tape machine haha
FR tho thank you so much for a new episode, this series is a blessing. Stay safe EQD gang
Ben Holdstock yeah. I was trying to remember who talked about that tape machine before
I love this dude, the way the band plays together is crazy and I wish I had known about them years ago
Always love deerhoof and how inventive each of them are. Microcosm of goodness
this is exactly what i needed exactly when i needed it.
The pickup with music box tines screwed on was a brilliant idea. Awesome man! I love these videos, Earthquaker! Keep them up guys!
him and Lee Ranaldo have the same cassette player for the blind!!!
Like they both said, it's the holy grail for cassette experimentalists.
I've never heard of this guy but I'm glad I have now. He's like a mad scientist of sound.
I've known about Deerhoof for many years and like a lot of their material. The biggest drawing factor is that they are just so damn fun! Some of their stuff is too weird for me....but by golly, it's fun! I really hope to see them live some day.
amazing live, seen em twice. If you can make it to a show def go!
love it when guitarist experiment with their own custom guitars. Keep that DIY spirit alive
That humbucker xylophone is insane I love it
18:35 love the slight sonic youth Easter egg! Sounds weirdly like Lee ronaldo
Both at minute 18 and both say it's the holy grail and proceed to read the label.
That experimental "strat" at 14:35 is very inspirational. Anyone could point me to a recording of that improv band Ed mentions in that segment? This is one of the best EQD episode yet, thanks!
It’s hilarious that he copied Lee Ranaldo’s description of the tape player word by word.
I've had a deja vu while watching this and now thanks to you I understand why.
Haha
Damn! That ambient strat is BAAAAD ASS!!!!!
loved how unique that modded strat was, really cool stuff with the sideway pickups
I only got into The 'Hoof like, a month or two before the lockdown--I saw the Milk Man performance on Juan's Basement and was knocked out by the them! Greg Saunier's an incredible drummer and I loved the interplay between Ed and John, it reminded me of The Magic Band--no demarcated lead or rhythm--so I bought the banana yellow 180gm Polyvinyl reissue of the Milk Man LP and was hooked! I have like 11 LP's and 3 singles now, including the Shining 7"--so good! Also have the ATP double 7" and the Deerhoof Vs. Evil picture disc with "Hitchcock" etc. on it, I Thought We Were Friends and also I recently bought all the vinyl reissues of the early LP's that were originally released on CD-R--Holdeypaws and The Man, The King, The Girl are great, Halfbird is wicked too (beautiful vinyl!). Splurged for the three LP bundle on the Kill Rock Stars (no, it was Joyful Noise iirc) label garage sale and got Offend Maggie on deep purple vinyl, Reveille on lovely mid-blue vinyl and Breakup Song on white. A bargain even with US to UK postage! Future Teenage Cave Artist was great and I hope they release the recent collabo with the jazz improviser--sorry, I forgot his name, I got it on MP3, though!
I LOVE THIS BAND! Thanks for the look at Ed's junk!
hell yeah, glad you dug it. thank you for spreading the word! *wink*
@@EarthQuakerDevices Oh mate they're definitely my fave contemporary band! Just a big 'ol smoosh of TALENT and incredibly interesting records! Only LP that gets a 3 out of 5 for me is Mountain Moves. A bit too...gimmicky for my taste. But everything from The Man The King The Girl to Reiville to Apple O and especially Milk Man--BLOODY INCREDIBLE. Hell, Future Teenage Cave Artist is wonderful...Friend Opportunity has to be one of my faves, though. Nothing I've heard sounds remotely like that masterpiece. Just an incredible band.
I wish this guy was my homeroom teacher when I was growing up
8^O
thank you for being you ed!
That rigged up humbucker is crazy
I have already watched this so many times.
I love this. Deerhoof are one of the few bands around today that consistently surprise me.
That contact mic advice, great.
This is not just junk it is useful junk for him and band.
Am I the only one that noticed he said the same exact thing as Lee Renaldo about that cassette player? EDIT: Theyre the exact same player if you look at the stains on the back haha
and he says the exact same thing, verbatim
thats kinda creepy now that you point it out
Woah what the fuck. It's like they're the same person saying the exact same thing. Even the holy grail part? Weird. hahahaha
this is my favorite conspiracy now
Just cheked out the other vid, it's the exact same close up shot that's used! only a slightly different color grading!
Cassette recorders/players are really the unsung heroes of music making. Ed's tips with the blown-out drums and the Library of Congress player echoed Sylvia Massy and Lee Ranaldo almost exactly. I also learned that Afterneath makes everything better. Thank you, Ed and Earthquaker!
Awesome episode. Could've been way longer for my taste :D Thanks for doing this show! I love it.
What a clever cookie!
The deerhoof guitar looks great
That sideways pickup'd guitar is so rad!
Is this the best episode of SUYJ? I would say... yes. Yes it is.
Huge fan of these guys for years, seen them live at least 8 times and this video was everything I expected. These guys are next level sound alchemists. Every album feels completely different from the last. Offend Maggie has some of rock n roll's greatest jams though. My Purple Past, Eaguro Guro, and Numina O....god damn. The exploration in the later albums has been turned up to 11. Quiet, genius at work here.
I could listen to that modded guitar @17:20 all day
This guy is the best
I love this series!
thanks for watching! more to come!
dude is a mad scientist with the gear
absolute mad scientist level, the genius a work sign is an understatement! thank you, your junk is life changing
Thanks for watching!
duuude Show us your junk is exactly what I need during quarantine (even though it gives me great despair over my lack of gear)
Thank you EQD! I've been waiting for a new Show us your Junk episode!!
This is an incredible interview. wow. The Strat alone is one of the single most creative ways I've seen to use a guitar. and sounds good too. not just a useless flashy mod. Cheers!
That is some really cool sounding "junk"!!!!
Thank you VERY much for this content. I really love this series!
Make an episode with TY SEGALL, please!
We love Deerhoof!
Fantastic.
I think I’m a Deerhoof fan now!
I have discovered a lot of new music because of this series. I really love this stuff, please keep it up!!
Such a great episode !
So incredible. Ed you’re a hero!
I LOVE this series and your pedals E.Q.D! Keep up the great work!!! 🖤
One of my favorite bands!!
Always loved this guys guitar
Would love to see more of his junk! This was a great episode, there should be a part 2
This was amazing to watch, I really liked the cassette trick with the drums
This is so great. Thank you Ed R. and EQD.
I've been waiting for something like this!!
Go go, champion! B-ball champion! Big smiles from Borneo!
Just so cool
I loved watching you junk your junk with us! Thank you xoxox.
LOVE LOVE LOvE. Thank you for this
Who am I to argue with a genius?!?
Awesome! As Always!!!
A. I'm not a musician, but this was incredible.
B. I can't find the Snow Magics on the internet anywhere. Seems like they would be cool.
C. The music at 16:55 with that Snow Magics guitar was just candy to me. I would love to listen to an hour jam of that. Wow.
I was just wondering when this series would return. Thanks, EQD. Very grateful for this!
Yay! It’s been so long. Great one too...
Possibly my new favorite episode(?) 🤔🤩 Heard OF but never heard the band before even, I don’t think, but I’m going to go rectify that now! 😜😄👍🏻👍🏻
love ed n deerhoof, great vid
amazing!
Please do Omar Rodriguez Lopez
Ed! Deerhoof is so great.
So good 👌🏼
This video is so beautiful
This is my favourite from the series, I had heard of Deerhoof before, now I think I am going to listen to them a lot more often.
King Flippy Nips Ha! I just posted almost the exact same thing before I started scrolling through the comment section 😜 lol
Even if Deer hoof became as famous as the BEatles, they would still be underrated. We need to populate every planet in the Solar system and make them the greatest band on all of them to give them the fame they deserve
what an absolute ruddy legend this fellow is
yeah! San Francisco sound = Deerhoof
I love these videos, thank you!
Glad you like them!
Much appreciated during the quarantine guys👌
Such a unique approach. I am amazed. 😮
Amazing! Thank You!
Thank you too!
A fellow Portlander?! Would love to pick his brain on some music dork stuff, I’m such a huge fan. Always nice seeing these humanized contexts of people, rather than just the musician ideologue.
So very glad to know the NERD amps are still in use!
amazing musicians and sonic scientists
Cool film, thanks.
Great stuff!
GENIUS
So many loves
So good
I really love this series of videos!
thanks for watching! more to come!
This is great
I've watched this vignette over and over as I've always liked Deer Huff, but never knew process of their sound... WoW!
That last guutar, oh man, just fuqed up my morning. Wow.
That casette player is giving me deja vu
Lee Ranaldo explained his using the exact same phrasing in his video. Wild.
This comment totally gave me deja vu!
now please someone take that tape portion from Lee and Ed and make a stereo clip. call it "holy grail tape".
@@sergey_engel There's a very creepy clip of Ed in a suit doing a word-perfect mime of a recorded comedy routine, complete with laughing audience, in a sad, empty room, filmed with alienating 'King of Comedy'-type camera angles. It's very strange.
Those old Library for the Blind cassette players were very cool. Back in the 80s a friend hinted at dumpster diving behind a library for the blind. Used to get piles of free cassettes!
