Complete Playlist: • Kanto Solo Challenges
Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

@Jrose11 Yo.. You good? You sound tired in this vid. Hope all is well.
The next pair of Pokemon you should do is Vileplume and Victreebel. I'm really interested to see how those two Pokemon would do in a red and blue run.
Hey man, congrats on getting your own place! If sponsors help you do it, then by all means, keep it up. We can always skip ahead anyways. Adulting is hard, so it is worthwhile to know how to keep a home. Knowing how to cook, clean, do laundry, and fix small things is extremely helpful. It's also easier than ever before, thanks to UA-cam. Seriously, there's a short instruction video for everything. Reddit is great if you need a very specific question answered. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to more quality content!
Promo code did not work for me :/
I like that you brought up that not every video is going to be fun to make. It's important to share that message because most people that run channels have to go through forms of tedium and challenge to get to where they are today. It's gonna be a crazy achievement when you've beaten the game with every Pokemon!
Cool to see you’re a fan of Jrose too!
It's always nice to see creators being supportive of each other, especially when it's in the small ways.

Interesting tidbit: sleep moves are guaranteed to hit if the target has the "needs to recharge" flag set, so when the opponent uses Hyper Beam (and doesn't KO you), you can safely use Hypnosis on them! It will even overwrite any status condition it already has, like Poison or Burn !
This is the first new thing I've learned about gen 1 in around three years.
Probably another glitch.
Doesn't surprise me! 😂
@@MH_0015 The part about making sleep moves guaranteed hits when the target needs to recharge makes sense, and it's an explicit check in the code, not a side effect, so I'd say it was intentional. The part about overwriting existing status conditions definitely wasn't though.

That is cool. Love that exhausted pokemon are guaranteed to sleep, makes sense since hyper beam supposed to be very powerful and probably tiring

First thought: "What? No!"
Second thought: "Oh yeah, it starts with Barrage."
Sabrina's Alakazam is the only Alakazam that will always go for recover because of Psywave. It being psychic damaging move that does not follow regular damage formula messes up good AI move prioritization in a way that doesn't occur in any other battle. Good AI will deprioritize not-very-effective damaging moves (i.e. psychic vs. psychic) only if there is a damaging move left it wouldn't deprioritize. Due to the special way of calculating damage of Psywave, good AI will both consider it as a damaging move it will not deprioritize, thus allowing the AI routine to deprioritize psychic-type damaging moves, and also deprioritize Psywave, leaving Recover as the only move it has not deprioritized.
Gen 1...
Gotta love how the "good" AI actually is the most exploitable, broken-ass AI in the games.
@@youtube-kit9450 It totally is. I find it especially funny with Dewgong and Pidgeot against Pokemon which are weak to Psychic. That this basically makes them completely useless.

MOST of the evolution stone Pokémon are going to be somewhat painful… On the other hand, wait until you get to Victreebel. It’s, pretty insane.
wow, Victreebel has a great lvl 1 moveset
@@justanobody0 Right? It makes you wonder how good it will end up being.
Body slam/swords dance/razor leaf/sleep powder is a broken set
@@YOSSARIAN313 Victreebel is going to hit like a truck with that kind of move set. I believe it’s base Attack is 120 and base Special is 100 in Gen 1.
Scott’s Thoughts had an amazing time with it and it’s his top Pokémon. (He didn’t do Mewtwo yet and he plays yellow.) I can’t wait for the Victreebel run!
Jrose: “I hate this run. I hate this run”

Jrose: “….. fine! I’ll keep going!”
Exeggutor is part of the Stone evolutions, and like many of them the principle is that you're supposed to be able to evolve them at any point (even at lvl 1) but in return you sacrifice moves. Most of their lvl up moves are learned by their 1st stage, so when you use an evolutionary stone, you have to trade moves for stats (either you stay with a less powerful 1st stage mon to learn more moves, or you go for evolution at the cost of moves like flamethrower/Sleep powder/Hydro Pump). As such trying to beat the game with only an Exeggutor/Arcanine/Poliwrath would be like using your stone at lvl 1, which makes for a very suboptimal pokemon, hence the difficulty. This is the kind of Pokemon where the evolutionnary line is better as a whole than both stages by themselves.
In red execute has terrible moves too
TMs
@@darthparallax5207 But there is a cost to using TMs, because they are single-use. So unless you do the Old Man Duplication glitch and wait until Cinnabar Island, you're going to have to sacrifice TMs that would be very nice for other Pokemon to use. Exeggutor is a fantastic candidate for Psychic, but that means something like Magmar, Electabuzz, Gengar, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Butterfree, Lapras, Snorlax, Chansey, or Starmie miss out. Mimic is an even more painful ask. Earthquake (which Exeggutor can't learn) was the most painful choice prior to Gen 5, even with Egg inheritance being a thing.
@@paddingtonbear-uk4wh Leech Seed, Reflect, and one of the Powders is at least more functional than Barrage.
I do think it would have been much less painful for jrose if he had interpreted "I beat Pokemon with just a X" as "I started the game with just X and didn't catch or use any other Pokemon, but it did evolve into its final form during our journey."
Although obviously that makes the "just Magikarp" run nowhere near as interesting.
The reason Sabrina's Alakazam spams recover and no other do it because of Psywave, it has a special damage formula that doesn't care about resistances and the game knows this. Smart ai pokemon only lower the priority of their non effective moves when they have an alternative damaging move either of a effective type of one of the ones that don't care about type. But because psywave is a psycic type move itself, it also gets a lower priority therefore making the highest priority move she has recover. It is very well covered in "Pokémon Red/Blue AI Tournament - Scientifically Ranking the Pokémon Red Trainers" by pimanrules
Just to explain this to people who don't get it:
1. The game checks if Alakazam has any moves which are either super effective, neutral, or don't factor in types.
2. Psywave counts as the latter, so the game moves forward with the instruction "Pick a move with a type that won't be resisted", as opposed to "Pick any move at random" which it would have done if it failed the check in Step 1.
3. The game now looks for a move with a type that won't be resisted. Notably, this *doesn't* take into account if the move uses types or not in damage calculation, unlike in Step 1. This is what you could consider to be the oversight that causes this behavior.
4. Because the game must select a move which has a type that isn't resisted, and the only such move Alakazam has is Recover, it is forced to select Recover.
EDIT: After re-reading my comment, I should clarify that my comment doesn't mention the priority system the OP alluded to. That would technically be more accurate, but I just explained it in the terms I use to conceptualize the system. Just wanted to point that out for accuracy's sake.
Thank you JRrose, this is one of my favourite series on youtube. Pokemon Red was one of my first ever games as a kid on my purple gameboy colour (still got it, framed with yellow, red and blue). Nearly 30 now and this tickles me right in the nostalgia. When a new red/blue solo run from you pops up I always look forward to tuning in. Your'e awesome!
Haven't seen the vid yet, but Exeggutor should be incredible on paper BUT it's a Gen 1 stone evolution, so I expect it to get stonewalled badly at first
Update: Yeppp. Gen 1 Movepools will do that
It's funny because Exeggutor is in the top 5 best Pokemon in competitive Gen 1. It's insane there because it has all the tools it needs while in-game it only does wayy later on.
@@plasmafreeze3018Competitive assumes the participating Pokemon are at peak condition. With all the TMs moves a party could possibly need.
The meta JRose's runs, on the other hand, is defined by how Kanto itself is designed.
@@plasmafreeze3018Yeah, I believe it's currently ranked at 5th in Gen 1 OU and is easily a central part of the metagame. But this ain't OU, this is Kanto
@@plasmafreeze3018 only problem is two of it's best moves in competitive (Sleep Powder and Stun Spore) could only be learned as an Exeggcute, which obviously got skipped for this run. Also another Staple attack it used was Explosion, which would be a problem here for...obvious reasons.
basically anything that's not an Eeveelution will have a crappy movepool (which expects you to learn from the previous evolution).
Got some Scott Steiner math vibes from that percent chase conversation against Blue in the Champion fight. Always weird seeing a Pokemon that is a menace on the competitive side of things struggle so much in the actual game play.
You know they say that all Pokémon are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Exeggutor and you can see that statement is not true.
I thought he had a 33 1/3 chance of losing but Jrose had a 66 2/3 chance of winning. He must have took the 33 1/3 chance minus a 25% chance to miss and he really only had an 8 1/3 chance of beating the elite 4…. Makes sense
@@joeb5958 But adding a slow leveling group and a lackluster variety movepool to the mix? His chances of winning drastically go down
I love the reference, these comments are gold.
It's because Exeggutor is missing all of its best moves which are Exeggcute exclusive - and it loves Explosion, which obviously isn't good for this run.
Glad you made it! The HelloFresh advertisement tells me you are real-deal now. Keep up the videos! Excited for you to get through all 151.
Thanks for your awesome videos
pretty interesting to compare this to butterfree, which has lower stats and also ends up only using psychic and mega drain. But I guess the faster level-ups and higher sleep powder accuracy really make a big difference. Of course starting with confusion is nice too.
Don't forget Mimic, except Butterfree needs it to...do more Psychics lol. Iconic moments of the series.
Gen 1 doesn't have abilities so sleep powder has the same percentage for all mons regardless of the user
@@lolidemon3163I think they meant Sleep Powder being more accurate to Hypnosis 75 compared to 60 respectively.

I like how you show your frustration sometimes with these videos. Not every single one is going to be a walk in the park and still you get through it. You're a trooper!
Congrats on getting your own place man! You make the long days at work just a little bit easier
Pimanrules actually figured out that weird glitch with Sabrina's AI.
Basically, the Smart AI down prioritizes a not very effective moves if the Pokémon has damage dealing moves that are normally or super effective.
So against a Pokémon that resists Psychic, all Psychic Type moves are down prioritized if she has any damage dealing move that isn't not very effective.
Psywave does qualify for this, so therefore all psychic type moves are down prioritized.
This ends up including Psywave, so she ends up just using Recover.
If Exeggutor had started with confusion or something, maybe it could have been higher up in the tier
I mean it probably wouldn't make sense as exeggutor doesn't have vines
but vine whip would help a lot too
It certainly would've helped a lot, tho I do question what tier exactly it'd make it to. Seems like the bad combination of the slow level-up group, underwhelming movepool, and low speed would've likely still knocked it down a tier or two.
mabe he could breed it in crystal give it psychic then transfer it back to red but the problem with that it would disobey a lot lol
@@ladyriethegoldendelmo5441 if he's going through all that trouble
all he would have to do is have his lvl 5 starting exeggutor, transfer it to another red or blue that has a spare psychic tm
teach the exeggutor psychic, transfer it back. It still has the same trainerID, so it won't disobey or nothing just like he never traded it
A 75 BP move going off its insane 125 Special instead of a 15/85 physical going off 95 Attack (30 points lower) would have been an absolute blessing, especially with all the poison pokémon in the beginning and how many pokémon tend to have better defense than special in the early game. How many psychic pokémon resisting it do you even meet until the rocket hideout?(where you'd find double-edge). The rival's Abra/Kadabra, the odd Slowpoke and Drowzee?
While its issues in the late game won't be addresseed, the first half of the game would have been way better.

Beautiful color palette, as always! Don't think I've ever seen Exeggutor's back sprite before; it is hilarious!
One of the many fun things about these runs is getting to see back sprites of Pokémon you've never seen before 😄
Only found your channel in the past few months. Love your content. Big JRose guy, so dope to see a sponsorship on this video, you definitely deserve it.
This is one of the runs where it would be really interesting how different the run would be if you would start with the unevolved pokemon and evolve it once it learns its good moves.
Unfortunately, I don't think it'd be much better at all... About the only relevant moves that Exeggcute learns over their(?) evolution is Leech Seed at L28, Reflect at L25, and Sleep Powder all the way at L48. Exeggutor is actually a bit better off of you can believe it, mainly due to learning Stomp where its pre-evo can't. This thing's move pool is pure garbage, and it's still in the Slow level group.
well it's obvious the pokemon were designed a certain way
missing out of all of exeggcute's level up moves by having exeggutor at lvl 5
or Moltres getting it's first lvl up move at 51, because you're expected to get Moltres when it's lvl 50, and normally if you have gotten to the point where you have moltres, you probably can go beat blain and get fire blast, especially with moltres
like agility is a move that helps fire spin, and Moltres gets agility at lvl 55
but if you play with a lvl 5 Moltres, you're 50 levels away from getting agility to help firespin
while normally you're 5 levels away
so you basically have to play the entire game without agility
and if you play with a lvl 5 moltres, you'll probably beat Blane and get Fire blast before getting agility anyway (I mean that might happen in the regular game anyway)
I could tell from the tone of the intro that this one was a chore. Thank you for doing this so that we all can watch (and don't have to do it ourselves!)
The rival really said “I’ll whip you eggs as a warmup for the Pokémon league.” Wow how thoughtful of him!

10:24 That was the pep talk I needed man. I just bought a car that is turning out to be a bit more of a heap than I thought. It's a long road to rolling, but you really got my head on straight with this.
This is such a depressing case too. This is Exeggutor's best generation too, he's so incredible in competitive. You send him out and something is going to die. Makes people fuckin' dance.
This is a more extreme example of the Tauros run, because Tauros is the king of Gen 1 Competitive, but in these runs, he's only slightly above average compared to all fully-evolved Pokémon.
@@samperez1727 Tauros is a lategame cleaner that comes out when the enemy team is all paralyzed and at 50% health, and you need hyper beam on it which is actually really annoying to get ingame because you need so much money for it and you're buying coins 50 at a time too
@@franslair2199 Yes. Kingambit is basically following on the footsteps of Tauros (different tools, but similar role and outcomes).
@@samperez1727 They're generally very different (tauros can't setup and doesn't have priority) but there's an interesting comparison between the kowtow cleave/sucker punch fifty-fifty and the classic Tauros ditto where everyone knows the combo is slam slam beam so are they gonna stay in on the beam or switch into Rhydon or Gengar?
@@franslair2199 Yes, late game cleaners with powerful moves. King has setup, priority, boost being the last one alive. Tauros has great coverage for every potential switch-in to keep the opponent guessing, high crit rate (which is almost like a Swords Dance) that can turn the tide.
What's funny is that Exeggutor is one of the best competitive pokemon of the first two generations.
The things that matter in these runs are: level up group, starting moves, body slam access, something to deal with Agatha that isn't mimic, special and speed stats.
They vary in importance but if your starting moves can't deal with brock and you can't deal with Agatha, the mon will just kinda... Not be very good.
It's strange, but there's something so nostalgic about that early game when you're struggling to beat Brock, like you know the cusp of your adventure is right around the corner but first you have to prove yourself against the toughest opponent you've faced yet.
I remember when I first played Pokémon Yellow when I was a kid, and I found Brock so difficult.
And then remember the feeling of finally beating him and from there the game just flowed.
Such a difficult feeling to recreate.
At least it can learn Mega Drain. I never understood why Exeggcute couldn’t but Exeggutor could.
He called Lt. Surge "Giovanni."
Surge is beyond losing titles. He doesn't even get his name anymore
Barrage until like level 30 will be brutal!
This was rough... Body slam? Nope. Struggle Strats? Nope. Badge Boost? Rarely. Mimic? Only for Elite 4 area. This tested the limits of how OP Psychic worked in 1st Gen.
This is one hard boiled beginning
Love to see you getting some good sponsors! Hope you are doing well JRose and happy 2024!

Congrats on the new place! Your hard work and dedication is paying off; I remember watching your early videos of this series in 2020
It always seems to come down to movepool. Exeggutor being a Stone Evolution hurts it mightily because it gets ONE more move via level-up, Stomp at 28, so Brock is going to be horrible by default because only Normal moves (and Hypnosis). But after hitting Celadon and getting the Freshwater to go to Saffron to get access to Psychic, things should be much more manageable.
Books also often have "the part that sucks". It's the chapters focussing on that one side character you hate.

Love the new video and glad to see another pokemon evolution having a comparable time to its base stage! Just out of curiosity, when it comes to Pokemon like Kakuna and Metapod, will you be allowing them to know poison sting and tackle respectively, from their previous stages or will you only allow them to know harden and use struggle?
Metapod is not going to matter, because regardless of whether it has Tackle/String Shot or not, it has nothing to hit Ghost-types, so the run is impossible. Kakuna with Poison Sting/String Shot also won't matter much, because its 25 Base Attack is lower than Weedle's 35 Base Attack, and Weedle is already too underpowered to complete the run.

Hovering over the video showed me the food prep stuff from the sponsor ad, and I was like oh my god, the man made breakfast with his exeggutor!!
I started doing these challenges a few weeks ago, already did Golem, Rhydon, Kabutops, Fearow, Pidgeot, Dodrio, Poliwrath and Mewtwo.
I'm loving how different every run is and I'll try do all the 151 Pokémon
Our boy Jrose coming for that sponsor. Never thought I’d see food prep and Pokemon speed runs in the same video though 😂
Yooo congrats on the sponsor! Hell yeah. Stoked for the video
"we only get 3 moves by level up" oh god "my only moves for the whole early game are barrage abd hypnosis" oh god! "we dont even get body slam" OH GOD
Love the video! I also really love Voyager, definitely my favourite Star Trek series despite the questionable episodes
Eventually, all Canadians talk about Hockey.
I've seen almost every one of these videos you've made and I love them. I'm always looking for the next video but I wonder, who do you think you'll save for last? Idk if you've said yet
I'm pleasantly surprised I knew what your final moveset would be for the Elite 4. I also knew this run would be nearly as tragic as the exeggcute run when I saw the initial moveset.
Jrose wanting to be a goalie, it makes sense. Thanks for sacrificing the body.
I can tell how a run goes by the amount of stress and defeat in your voice when you say hey everyone. Love your videos thank you for your sacrificed sanity
24:42 i thought you choked there for a second buddy. you had me worried for a moment XD
Omg as a therapist, it's so encouraging that you're modeling radical acceptance in your videos! One more reason I love to watch! Embrace the suck y'all 😄
