BTW japanese blue is different from international blue. the changes are just encounters and in game trades

@Jrose11 You should watch Imported Cheese. He does videos on Japanese Green
I love that the sponsor of this video is such a hyper targeted seller whose product is so perfectly aligned with the viewers of this channel.
Thank you Jrose for being awesome!!
I really love everytime Jrose says "at this time Mewtwo already finished the game"
As if any Pokemon could compare to Mewtwo.
I feel like there needs to be a timer or something in the corner of the screen showing how far Mewtwo was into the game (until the time of Mewtwo completion is reached, where the line can be said).
Mewtwo is the talented older brother all pokemon wish to be like and that the parents compare you to.
…wake up in the morning…blearily make myself coffee…
Jrose: at this time Mewtwo already finished the game
What is the conversation of mewtwos to magikarps? Like is it mewtwo beat the game 11 times before magikarp ended the run at Erica

I remember the rock tunnel being sone daunting, overwhelming challenge back in my childhood. I was absolutely shocked at how I just breezed through it when I played through it again when it was re-released on the E-Shop for the 3ds. The seafoam islands was pretty much a no go for me and I had to have my older cousin help me through victory road lol. Fun times looking back on it now.

Reminder about the "bad" R/G sprites: Those are the original designs. The drawings that standardized the monsters were interpretations done by one single person. Had it been anyone else we'd have a different, but parallel set of gen 1 monsters. Neat to think about.
Just got to where you went over this in the vid - you have it the other way around. The "art first" theory feels intuitive and is commonly-believed, but the devs have said the sprites came first and the art was based off them.
Makes sense if you think about it - you don't need to shrink designs or palettes to fit inside the pixel box limits if that's where you start out.
And they kept the back sprites from Green in American Red and Blue. It’s why some of them (like Mew) look so weird from the back.
@@Neogeddon Something to add is that there were more than one person working on the sprites (Usually whoever made the Pokemon in the first place, of course), and this is why the quality is so inconsistent. There's ways to tell who did what, most notably, a lot of the better spritework has this checkerboard pattern used for shading, and I think only one of them used it.
@@rroadagain2810 It's definitely noticable. A bunch of Green sprites are jokes, but then there are also good ones that are noticably better than the Red/Blue sprites (Koffing would be an obvious example, considering they made a huge error on the Red/Blue sprite, but even if the face and symbol were swapped places the Green version would probably still look better).
This is the exact reason that dragonite doesn’t look like the rest of its evolutionary line, it was designed by a different person.
21:00 It's actually the other way around! The RG sprites were turned into art by Sugimori, who made them more consistent design-wise, as well as making small edits to the designs themselves.
Sugimori’s artwork is iconic
Fun fact! The gen 1 Sugimori artstyle was influenced heavily by Akira Toriyama, specifically with the sort of faded watercolor look he used for a lot of volume covers. You can also see it in the eyes, and some of the trainer's designs.
The watercolour style has yet to be topped either. Best style by far @@personguy94

This comment seems really sarcastic xdd
I always love seeing the old sprites. They have a certain charm to them that you just dont get with the newer 3D games
i had fun playing green. didn't learn any japanese but learned what shapes were the damaging attacks haha
So many content creators use "Pokémon Green" to be more exotic since that's the version _name_ that we never got here, but aside from the sprites and the bugs that are exclusive to Japanese Red/Green, Green is functionally the same as international Blue. The actual "exotic game" that was never released outside of Japan was _Blue_ Version, which has a different Pokémon distribution, new layout for Cerulean Cave (though I can't remember if it's the Blue layout or the Red/Green layout that made it into international Red/Blue), and different in-game trades. Fun fact: because international Red/Blue were made using the upgrades from Japanese Blue, any text changes from Red/Green to Blue would be preserved in international Red/ Blue. In Japanese Blue, there are two in-game trades featuring the trade evolutions--a Machoke for a Haunter in Cerulean City, and a Kadabra for a Graveler in the Cinnabar Lab. In both cases, the NPC says "the (Pokémon) you traded to me went and evolved!" when spoken to again after making the trade. While the Machoke-Haunter trade was Poliwhirl for Jynx in Red/Blue and Poliwhirl isn't fully evolved, the Kadabra-Graveler trade is Raichu for Electrode, leading to the NPC claiming that Raichu evolved.
Incidentally, the Poliwhirl evolving immediately after the trade would be possible in any generation _other than_ Gen 1...crazy fan theory that due to translation errors, the NPC that you get Jynx from was actually the discoverer of Politoed?
...Anyway, I agree that Tangela was the Pokémon most screwed over by Gen 1's awful move pools. Due to its Special being what would eventually become its Special Attack, its effective Gen 1 BST is actually closer to *Tangrowth's* than to its own post-Gen 1. (60 extra points of Sp. Def means it goes from 435 to 495; Tangrowth's is 535). In theory, it should be a great tank that hits hard on the special side...which would be great if its Special movepool weren't so bad that it literally gets more damage per turn with a two-turn move with no invulnerability turn than it would attacking twice with a weaker move (though the weaker move still pays off because it's HP-draining). Absolutely terrible.
Edit: Oh he actually talks about the Red/Green/Blue thing later in the video.
If I'm not mistaken, International Red/Blue uses:
Red/Green encounter Tables
Red/Green in-game trades
Red/Green NPC Rosters
JP Blue graphics
JP Blue Codebase
JP Blue Cerulean Cave(the US wouldn't get the Red/Green version until FRLG)
JP Blue game script as basis for translation.
An the use ofRed/Green in-game trades and JP Blue game script is why there are some in-game trades where the NPC says the mon you traded them evolved when its a mon that doesn't evolve via trade. In JP Blue, those trades were changed to involve the trade evolutions.
They were planning on adding a Tangela evolution in Gold/Silver originally, that might be part of the reason they nerfed Tangela so hard with the Special split. Were they not orginally planning to give it an evolution they might have gave it a better Special Defense stat.
You guys are far too invested in this
Been watching Jrose for years now and he is one damn hard worker. Good job keeping the content feeling fresh. It's gonna be such a momentus event when he finishes this gen 1 series. Congrats on the sponsor! This guy even makes the ad enjoyable
Watching Jrose play the version I played when I was little puts a smile on my face.
Especially the "Weird seeing a 10 in the name" part.
It's so wild seeing the Green sprites again. I haven't seen these since I was a kid on my Uncle's computer playing an emulator of the game.
Green was the first pokemon I played emulated on my first pc in the mid 2000s...
The coincidence of Jrose doing the "stay tune for the next episode of Jrose Ball Z" for the first time and Akira Toriyama's death made me smile and a bit sad
Dude, your foreshadowing is beyond universe
Jrose, this video was nothing short of being a real treat. Thank you for all that you do. It was such a joy to watch and to see all the different sprites of pocket monster green.
I very much enjoyed the “Japanese Sentence” in the thumbnail.
I spent a semester studying Japanese in Japan, and it happened to be the summer that B2/W2 were released in japan (this was before they started simultaneous worldwide releases). So I picked up a copy of White 2 the day it released in Japan, and had a lot of fun playing it. I was far from fluent, but the games are simple enough, and I treated it like practice. While translating dialogue was easy enough, the real problem ended up being the Pokemon's names. My favourite example was "Trainer is about to send out Windy, would you like to change Pokemon?" I had no idea what a "Windy" was, so I just had to guess. I figured it was probably a Flying type, so I switched to Galvantula (bug/electric, for those less familiar with new mons), who was very unhappy to discover that Windy is the Japanese name for Arcanine! Why? No idea. lol
Same man same. Had to just guess typing based on color and name
Tangela was the favourite çpokemon of a friend when we were children becuase the name of his mom sounded similar. Sadly, the mom, who was like an aunt to me, passed away some years ago. Now, Tangela continues remembering of that woman. Thanks for doing something special with Tangela, Jrose.
Recently found your channel and been really enjoying this series! Had an eye surgery last week, and was also in the hospital for some severe back/shoulder pain which has made it tough to sleep, and you videos have become a great comfort for me! Thanks for making these, and I'm looking forward to a solo run with my favourite mon, Raichu!
Great video!
Also, Some of the sprites are actually amazing!
The Pokémon Green sprites are really neat. Some of them are actually more spot on than the sprites from Blue. And the others... well...
I have to say this video's concept feels like an April Fools prank that came a month and a half early
I'm so glad you did this run in pokemon green. These sprites are so interesting to look at! Also glad you put in all the extra work of not knowing japanese 😂 made it very relatable. Keep up the great work jrose! Love to see it ❤
I'm a simple man. I see a new Jrose video uploaded, I watch it
so fun seeing the different sprites. loved your outro too haha
I love your videos mate, these give me such nostalgia and it’s so great to get my fix through your videos as I don’t have the time to replay the games myself. And your commentary is brilliant, loads of great analysis but in a comedic and light hearted tone, really shows you’re someone who enjoys the games and cares about explaining their quality and the best way to enjoy them, to the viewer! Please keep it up! Love the 1 hour+ videos especially! All the best from the UK
Jrose your videos are a lot of fun to watch and relaxing especially before bed, I appreciate the time you put into them and thank you for your service
Love your content, JRose! Hope you'll eventually be so crazy as to do this for other gens as well!!
Gengar is so freaky looking in this game. Great work, as usual; I enjoyed your asides on the sprites!
This is a top 3 Jrose plot twist videos.
Finally, the Tangela “impossible challenge.” I’ve been waiting for my favorite Pokémon to be played for over a year and the fact that it’s being played on Green version just makes it awesome and worth the wait… Thanks, Jrose11 for this series. Keep up the entertaining content; you rock.
I dug this one. Seeing the alternate sprites and Pokemon names was neat. I'm probably going to grab this soon =)
Omg I loved seeing all those different sprites!
Gotta love that title! It really sounds like a mistranslated blurb from back in the day
It sounds like something that could come from the anime 😂
It's an anime episode name for sure
25:57 I love Haunter's Green sprite. Too bad we only got to see it for a couple seconds lol.
This is definitely one of the most fun videos in a while. The green sprites are hilarious and fun 😀
I was just thinking about when the tangela one was going to come out! Excited to watch!
I'm so excited for this!! This is the one solo run I've done so I'm curious how JRose will do!
Fantastic. Your vids are always a treat.
I love these videos but I especially love the music, both by MakeGameMusic, but especially the remixes!
Ah I needed that to support me throughout this week, keep up Jrose !
I like how the thumbnail had the effort put in to have ジェイローズ11 (Jrose11) and 日本語文章 (Japanese Writing). Its interesting to see how some Pokemon have the same name in Japanese. I noticed スターミー (staaamii = Starmie)
Then you have Haunter which is "Ghost" and Ghastly which is just... "Ghos" 😂
JRose really did a whole-ass run in a language he doesn't even know. Absolute legend.
If you have played red or blue, then you can do it too.
Honestly it was a lot more common back in the day before games were routinely localized and released simultaneously. I remember putting 200+ hrs into FF Dissidia for the PSP before it finally got localized. Sometimes good games are worth not knowing what the hell is going on.
@@JebAlert I've heard of Dissidia about one month after its local release and I was totally overwhelmed by this accidental discovery. Then I immediately took my bike to the next best store, bought the game and was sucked into that universe for a similar amount of time.
And then Dissidia 012 came out and the original game felt like it was just a demo.
you say that like it’s difficult lol

Maybe it’s just because I’ve stared at the Gen 1 sprites for so many hours but I kinda like the OG Japanese sprites more than what we got.
This is really cool. Awesome idea to play Pokemon Green!
What a pleasant surprise! I just did a living Dex on Green. Playing the game in a language I can barely read wasn't easy but after a while I was able to pick out some key vocab words (plus the battle animations did a TON of heavy lifting). Currently doing the same in Crystal!
Your videos and the Behind Bluey podcast are my feel good content.
Tangela is cool because it has Sonic shoes.
I lowkey expected him to start the first few seconds speaking Japanese 💀

Won’t lie I probably would not have clicked on this since it’s Tangela but I saw you playing green and that definitely intrigued me! Great vid
28:48: What Exeggcutor missed was "saimin jutsu", which Google translates as Hypnosis.
I love it how you titled the episode like a Japanese anime title from Pokémon.
Pokemon Green is the only Gen 1 game that I never got to play, but I always wanted to since green is my favorite color. Amazing that you showed up this game at least once in your series, with the this deep green side-background and all.
Oh man, that was the closest Rival Fivel fight you've ever lost
I remember playing Secret of Mana in Japanese at some point, and because I had played it so much before, I could navigate most areas and things without much trouble. It was kind of fun to recognize, how much I could do without knowing what the characters exactly represented - I hope you had a similarly fun experience :)
I played Pokemon Green when I was first learning Japanese and I loved it. I still remember learning how to say "shorts", tampan, from the youngster on route 3.
Gengar looks like something that came out of "Where the Wild Things Are" movie/kid book

It’s fun seeing the Green sprites
If Tangela had some better early moves, it's amazing to think how much farther it could have gotten. It's awesome you did Pokémon Green! That Dragonair sprite still almost made me cry, though.
Pokémon green Alakazam really rocking the kelp stache like the SpongeBob movie
The title reminds me of a lot of the original Japanese titles of Pokemon anime episodes which I assume is intentional. As for the Pokemon Green while it is a nice change of pace I have to wonder what GameFreak were thinking when they chose to use those original Pokemon sprites as many are just bizarre.
I mean those sprites are just what the artists originally drew when they designed the Pokémon lol. The modern equivalent would be if a 3D artist at Game Freak had an idea for a new Pokémon without drawing any concepts, immediately made a 3D model of it from memory, and got to put it in the finished game. It’s a process that would never fly today with concept artists and dedicated character designers, but back in the early stages of Pokémon’s development, that’s how they worked with the team they had.
I had a similar experience as a kid playing Pokemon Blue when I was trying to learn English. I got stuck at Victory Road for many weeks because I didn't know what Strength actually did. However, the game taught me many words, such as "attacks", "super-effective", "unaffected", "fainted", "badge", "thunder", "rainbow", "elite", etc.
So much is changed from region to region when various mediums are brought to other areas and translated to different languages and whatnot. Very cool.
16:25 And That is Koffing correct sprite
XD Well other than missing the "And that's a wrap" punchline everyone wishes they got (though I find the DBZ reference funny), pretty cool vid though pretty unfortunate ranking for Tangela despite the strong end game. Also interesting you used Pokemon GREEN for this despite US Blue functioning a similar way.
Love the sprite changes on this version, so interesting to see all the differences.
I am in love with the term "luck sandwich", and will be adding it to my vocabulary
5:58 Haaaa!!! Dude, I can't tell if that's Ekans doing a pog face, a Bellsprout impersonation, or was originally part duck. The original JP sprites were WILD sometimes!
