The only thing I would like to add is that, when you're talking about government in the Communist part, it's not really a government in the way we see it today, but more like an assembly of people. Like the soviets in Russia were planned to be but fell short
@Jay Money this isn't a novel idea. All government and socioeconomic systems end the same way...communism. It is the human condition greed, equality of outcome, power and legacy. Tribes, Feudal Systems, Monarchy, Empire, Revolution, Republics, Democracy, Direct Democracy, Representative Democracy, Socialism, Communism and then collapse. All civilizations have followed this pattern. Socialism is the beginning of the end for any sustainable economy, government or social structure. What matters is what we are willing to fight for.

@@IllustratetoEducate Democratic Socialism is a Socialist ideology, considered a branch of marxism, where the state is a socialist sate NOT capitalist state. A social democracy is also considered a branch of Revisionist Marxism (though there is debate here). A Social Democracy is a Capitalist Society, but with social policies and welfare, and a focus on the redistribution of wealth.
So what they're pushing for here in the US is social democracy? Taking those Nordic countries as examples, I don't think it's that bad as Republicans say so. I'm a new voter as a naturalized American and I wanted to understand which party has better policies for all.
@Yahir Hernandez thank you for your simplified explanation. I married a Cuban American who was a strong Republican and I can see now why but I think it's all because of lack of knowledge and understanding the difference between social democracy and communism in Cuba.
How many times do I have to say that a Social Democracy is NOT the same as Democratic Socialism. 1)Sweden is a SOCIAL DEMOCRACY; a fundamentally CAPITALIST system with a large welfare state. Democratic Socialism is when then means of production are owned by (realistically) the state but the people/workers have a say in how businesses are run. 2)Communism does NOT require revolution neither is socialism achieved through democratic means. Socialism is described as a post-capitalist and pre-communist state that can be seen as the transitionary state form Capitalism to Communism. Prominent examples of Socialism are the socioeconomic state of the USSR (pre glasnost/perestroika), the PRC under Mao and possibly, a more gentle version, Tito's Yugoslavia. 3) When most people today talk about "communist" countries their referring to Socialist nations run by a Communist Party. Nobody is ever referring to "theory communism" just like when people say "capitalist" they're referring to mixed economies with a prominent private sector, like the USA and not "theory capitalism". Both the theoretical versions of communism and capitalism have never been implemented and will, probably, never be. To sum up, -Social Democracy=Capitalism + Welfare -Socialism=State-owned means of production -Democratic Socialism=State-owned m.o.p. + will of the people -Communism=Moneyless, Classless, Stateless -When people talk about communist countries they're referring to ones like the USSR and when talking about capitalist countries they're referring to ones like the USA. Both terms are wrongly used but it is convenient so it's very acceptable to use them in that manner.

I have a deep understanding of communism. Especially from the Russia (Soviet) point of view. From 1984-1986 I served an LDS mission in New York City as a Russian speaking missionary. I had many older Russian friends who were in concentration camps and had lived their lives in the Soviet system (the perfect communistic system experiment). I could write a book on the terrible strife these people lived in. But my real learning on communism was living in the Soviet Union (Leningrad) the summer of 1990. This was the summer the Berlin Wall came down, and one year before the Soviet Union dissolved. I lived the life of a Soviet Russian for the summer. It was super exciting for me. But I can't even begin to paint the picture of life under Soviet rule. The young ones of today would not believe me. You are right, Dan. Socialism is the gateway to communism. Yes, it's important to frame communism and socialism as simply as possible, so it's easier to convince people. Once you get into the minutia of these philosophies, they fall apart and are easily destroyed in debate. By giving a very sanitized and dumbed down version of communism and socialism, it will seem reasonable to unsophisticated thinkers who've never heard any political arguments before. We've seen these systems play out, and it has always been a blood bath and complete economic failure.

@Illustrate to Educate Actually, and sorry to nitpick, but when you say "Democratic Socialism", I think you're actually referring to "Social Democracy". The two terms are infuriatingly similar, and I've only recently learnt the differences between them myself. Democratic Socialism is a form of more moderate socialism that was labelled as such by it's advocates to differentiate itself from other forms of Socialism, like the USSR, Cuba, North Korea, that they saw as undemocratic and that they wished to distance themselves from. Social Democracy is the softer form of Capitalism, where the economic system is maintained, with the Bourgeoisie owning the "capital", but that aims to lessen wealth inequality and increase public ownership. This is what the Nordic countries support, along with politicians like Bernie Sanders. Aside from that, great video. It really helped me get a grasp of the differences between the two systems.

While socialism meets the inherently social needs of humans, what about competition? Capitalism fulfills it, but without it, I fear that people will find a way to be cruel or exploitative to one another in some other way, like through further division between political ideologies or sports rivalries. How can this be combatted? How can our competitive sides be satisfied?
The idea is not to completely remove capitalism. There will still be rewards for achievement. It's just that with socialistic policies that would negate abuse of workers. If people had their needs met (food, housing, healthcare, leisure time, etc), then they wouldn't be ripe for exploitation as they are in the US. If you don't have to be a wage slave simply to stay alive then cooperations would have to pay you what you deserve or they wouldn't get the workers.

Wow! I was finding a good video about communism a while ago and I am grateful that I discovered this. Now I finallt understand it. I was confused with the idea of communism because I did not know there is a country that is like that but then you cleared all the confusion and questions that is on my mind by saying that there is no country that has a pure communism. Thank you! It was such an educational video❤️
I really hate it when people say *Can communism ever work?* Like what do you mean by work? Communism is a philosophical, social, political and economic ideology and movement. For communists, a communist society, in which there is “common ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes, money and the state” is an ideal state: that is, no existing system actually reaches that ideal. There has never been a communist country and never will be one because we are humans with biases just like there can never be a truly capitalist country either. Although communist ideas existed before Karl Marx wrote the ‘Communist manifesto’ in 1848, that document has come to represent the core ideas of modern communist ideology and movements. Marx later wrote ‘Capital’, a more detailed analysis of how the existing ‘capitalist’ system worked. His writings inspired many movements, including the 1917 Russian revolution. As a result, ‘communism’, which is an ideology, is commonly confused with the political and economic system that developed in the Soviet Union after the Russian revolution. Marx suggested that on the path towards ‘common ownership’ there would need to be a transition phase involving state ownership. In the Soviet Union, the government nationalised private property, but state ownership itself is not ‘communism’. Nonetheless, the Soviet system has become the commonly used meaning of ‘communism’. Your question probably refers to ‘communism’ in that sense. The Soviet Union’s ‘communist’ system imposed central government ownership and control (a system also imposed on other countries in the ‘Soviet bloc’ in Eastern Europe), rejected elections on the grounds that the ‘communist’ party represented the people, and used a repressive system to suppress dissenters. Its economy stagnated and it became increasingly unpopular until its collapse in 1989-90. So the Soviet system (which had gone through various stages) lasted just over 70 years, but clearly, in the end, did not ‘work’. Why did Soviet communism not work? That is another complicated question, but it boils down to an over-centralised, oppressive, bureaucratic and rigid economic and political system. The failure of the Soviet system has been widely hailed as proof that ‘communism’ does not work, but this idea is based on the mistaken idea that communism means the Soviet Union’s system. In some cases when communists have gained power, economic and social outcomes have been relatively positive. In the state of Kerala in India, where the communist party is strong and influential (often winning elections), it has helped to build a relatively strong economy, educational system and social safety net. In terms of economic performance, China, where the Communist Party rules with no other legal parties, has been outstanding in recent decades; while in Cuba, also with a one-party community party-ruled government, economic performance has been weak but social indicators (life expectancy, educational level) have been remarkably good. These three cases are examples of very different systems ruled by communists. That is, ‘communism’ is not a single political and economic system. However, the communist ideology, which argues that the current ‘capitalist’ system is unfair and that it is possible to challenge it, has therefore ‘worked’ in the sense that it has inspired people to push for social change: communists have therefore been among trade unionists using political and industrial pressure to secure fairer working conditions, and campaigners for health services, equal opportunities, and a fairer global economic system.
Thank you for this simple, informative video. Well done with no bias. My only suggestion would be to have it at half speed to make the information easier to assimilate.
Socialism and Communisms suffer from the same weakness that Capitalism does. Humans are naturally competitive. They prioritize themselves and their immediate loved ones over a stranger. All three systems are inherently flawed because those who would exploit the systems always find ways to do so and rise to prominence.
I appreciate this video didn't justifying term but also talked about their similarities and differences this helped me to understand it more, thank you
NOT KNOCKING YOU OR JUDGING YOU but there's actually some key things wrong with this. Second, "communist state" is an oxymoron as a communist society would be stateless. There are other things but I'll suggest Paul Morrin's Socialism 101 series on youtube.
I want to say, I think you defined socialism/communism so much better in this video than your last. Im a socialist but not a communist. Communism would have to be entirely without corruption, theft, envy, hate or jealousy and I dont see that happening happening with the way we humans are now. Socialism however is possible and if both properly democratic yet rigid enough it would be a better system than capitalism. I dare say it would be more free, except if you wanted to be like Jeff Bezos, at which point you'd deserve those limits. Capitalism has been good at innovation and technology, so to not compensate our exceptional people for their capabilities is a bad idea, but there just has to be a limit. Also I dont believe in nationalism, I believe in self determination between cultures, but borders are absurd
One thing to note is that Marx never wrote about "equality" as he thought that term was utopian in nature. Marxist thought is material in nature and accepts that pure equality is not feasible or even desirable.
@jonathandeere6232 I can't tell if you are agreeing with me. Both me and Marx would also say that equality of outcome is a bad goal and does not work out. No existing socialist country has ever considered equality of outcome a part of their doctrine or even something that would be good.

@@thedude3065 I could ask the same about the current system. To prevent people from raising their fists goes against the very idea of freedom that you claim to support.
In Capital, Marx begins his analysis with an already existing capitalist economy. Marx can't explain how the capitalist economy came into existence because such an economy couldn't come into existence according to Marx's peculiar analysis of the capitalist economy where surplus-value created capital must first exist, but since surplus-value doesn't exist yet, there can be no capital to begin the capitalist economy. To overcome this inherent contradiction in Marx's "investigation", he begins Capital where we find an already existing capitalist economy: “The wealth of those societies in which the capitalist mode of production prevails, presents itself as “an immense accumulation of commodities," its unit being a single commodity. Our investigation must therefore begin with the analysis of a commodity.” The "investigation" needs to begin with how the commodities came into existence, that is how the capitalist economy came into existence, an oversight necessitated by a fraud. Let's see if we can commence the Capitalist economy using the following Marxist tautology, "Hitherto we have investigated how surplus-value emanates from capital; we have now to see how capital arises from surplus-value.":* (1) What do we need to initiate the Capitalist economy? Capital, of course. (2) So let's get some capital...where is this capital, according to Marx? (3) We get capital from surplus value, Marx tells us, "capital arises from surplus-value." (4) Okay, so let's get some surplus value to get capital. Where can we find surplus value, according to Marx? (5) "Surplus value emanates from capital", Marx's tautologically informs us! ------------------------- * Capital, Chapter 24, first sentence (1867)
I appreciate that this is not biased but it is also not correct. In the description of Communism, everything was right until the claim that the State controls all property. This is not what Communism is. The first part of the explanation is right, Communism is a classless society where productive property and assets are held in common by all of society, by function Communism is also a post scarce society (meaning commodities for use-value, goods which satisfy human needs and wants, are in such abundance that profit isn't necessary). There is no state at all in Communism. 'Communist states' of the 20th century, and including China, Cuba, Vietnam and Laos today, all claim to be Communist states in that they are controlled by a Communist party under Marxist-Leninist ideology. Marxist Leninism states underdeveloped countries that are not sufficiently developed for socialism or communism to evolve must be controlled by a strong vanguard Communist Party which is made up of workers and intelligentsia (theorists, thinkers) to guide economic development so that when conditions are right, a peaceful transition to Socialist and Communist society can be achieved. Communist Parties are meant to ensure a safe transition to further stages of development, but those states like the USSR, are not Communist societies and nor do/did they claim to be.
I like to have opportunity and be self sufficient. I don't want a government to feed me or own the roof over my head. I don't want to support people who do not want to contribute.
Neither of your definitions of these ideologies are correct. When you defined socialism, you specifically defined state socialism, which functions through a democratic government, the true definition of socialism is more simple, worker / collective control / ownership of the means of production. There is no central government under communism, communism is by definition, a stateless, classless, moneyless, communal society.

To sum up,
-Social Democracy=Capitalism + Welfare
-Socialism=State-owned means of production
-Democratic Socialism=State-owned m.o.p. + will of the people
-Communism=Moneyless, Classless, Stateless
-When people talk about communist countries they're referring to ones like the USSR and when talking about capitalist countries they're referring to ones like the USA. Both terms are wrongly used but it is convenient so it's very acceptable to use them in that manner.

I have a deep understanding of communism. Especially from the Russia (Soviet) point of view. From 1984-1986 I served an LDS mission in New York City as a Russian speaking missionary. I spent my two years working with Russians, all who had immigrated from the Soviet Union. When I see the democrats pushing socialism I just can't even believe it. They have absolutely NO IDEA what they are messing with. It is scary, scary, scary. Thank you for such a powerful video.

@Illustrate to Educate
Actually, and sorry to nitpick, but when you say "Democratic Socialism", I think you're actually referring to "Social Democracy".

Socialism and Communisms suffer from the same weakness that Capitalism does. Humans are naturally competitive. They prioritize themselves and their immediate loved ones over a stranger.

Equal outcomes means everybody loses.
@jonathandeere6232 I can't tell if you are agreeing with me. Both me and Marx would also say that equality of outcome is a bad goal and does not work out. No existing socialist country has ever considered equality of outcome a part of their doctrine or even something that would be good.

Great job dude. Very talented and informative. New sub 👍🏾
Thank you so much!
I think Democratic Socialism is a good balance between Socialism and Capitalism

Yet those that obtain high positions in the Socialist or Communist parties are wealthy while the majority are in poverty. Regardless of system, there will always be the rich and the poor.

Great video.
One thing that was missing at the end was that the existing (declared) communist countries also fail to provide properly for their people and that the people have practically no say in what the government does.
Exactly
They are no communist countries, just socialist ones. But the second point is just too true, half of socialists dont even consider them socialist because of this problem.
@MadGod Артур
I agree, that's why I put "(declared)" in there.
I should have said "alleged", to be more precise.
However, I do agree with your point. One of the best example are Scandinavian countries, first and foremost Sweden. Imo
Nice job..Part 2...please provide more specific examples of how each system would work modern day.
Great video! North Korea follows extreme Communism which is essentially Totalitarianism.
Socialism seems like a gateway to Capitalism, because there are bound to be dissatisfied individuals who are more efficient and work harder than others.
Communism seems like a gateway to Totalitarianism, for obvious reasons.
@@loturzelrestaurant Ofcourse its opposes Capitalism, but that doesn't mean it cannot potentially give rise to Capitalism due to dissatisfied individuals

ok as a person who needs things simply explained, this was super helpful so thank you!
No problem!
Hitler called himself a socialist.
Well he wasn't one
He’s as socialist as the Nordic countries
2:44 "...with the central government controlling ALL means of production."
It doesn't matter what is tried, as long as the government has this much autonomy, it will fail
There is no state in communism, per Marx state is just a tool of the minority class to keep the majority from taking their stuff, thus in a classless society it would be irrelevant. The government doesnt determine what you want under communism, you decide your need.
Thank you so much, I couldn’t find one honest source not influenced by a neoliberal standpoint that could lay all this out obviously. The biased sources would just say both are bad and not get into what they actually are.
The thing is, I'm not sure you got the definitions and differences right...
But I don't blame you since I feel like even in leftist circles there is confusion
Yeah that’s the thing. There’s so many different definitions out there. I tried sticking to the most “text-book” definition, which even then, doesn’t really exist.
@@IllustratetoEducate Yes that is true indeed.
That is why I don't blame you and I respect that you tried nonetheless
As a socialist, I'm not complaining. We can barely agree on anything ourselves.
This whole time I thought communism and socialism were the same thing. this video really helped clear things up for me :)
This is a must learn course for Americans since they have been browbeaten to reject everything except American Capitalism, which, as we have seen during this pandemic, is a failure.

something about a raised fist angers me
@Evan Scammell I think I can put into words
to me it says
"agree with us or die"
ultimatums go against freedom
and freedom being America's foundation has no place for a mentality like that
lest we become what the colonists rebelled against
@@thedude3065 facts
@@thedude3065 I understand the sentiment, especially having been right wing in a previous life myself, but to leftists, the raised fist simply means the throwing-off of oppressive forces. These forces oppress people of all ideologies, like the Wall Street suits or the lobbyists in the halls of congress, and the fist is the symbol of the people willing to stand up and fight against them.
@@bshbhyuh how long until the ends no longer justify the means?
@@thedude3065 I could ask the same about the current system. Millions of people die every year because of the current organization of the economy, and Americans suffer everyday because of the way our government works. The system itself says “Agree with us or die,” the system itself commits violence against the people, so who are we to stop people from raising their fists in protest, especially peacefully? To prevent people from raising their fists goes against the very idea of freedom that you claim to support.
This is an excellent overview. Thank you!!
great one!!!
The difference between Socialism and Communism is that Socialism is a stepping stone towards Communism.
Karl Marx also advocated the “removal” of certain groups from society. AKA racial/ethnic cleansing.
To overcome this inherent contradiction in Marx's "investigation", he begins Capital where we find an already existing capitalist economy:
“The wealth of those societies in which the capitalist
mode of production prevails, presents itself as “an
immense accumulation of commodities," its unit
being a single commodity. Our investigation must
therefore begin with the analysis of a commodity.”
The "investigation" needs to begin with how the commodities came into existence, that is how the capitalist economy came into existence, an oversight necessitated by a fraud.
Let's see if we can commence the Capitalist economy using the following Marxist tautology, "Hitherto we have investigated how surplus-value emanates from capital; we have now to see how capital arises from surplus-value.":*
(1) What do we need to initiate the Capitalist economy? Capital, of course.
(2) So let's get some capital...where is this capital, according to Marx?
(3) We get capital from surplus value, Marx tells us, "capital arises from surplus-value."
(4) Okay, so let's get some surplus value to get capital. Where can we find surplus value, according to Marx?
(5) "Surplus value emanates from capital", Marx's tautologically informs us!

* Capital, Chapter 24, first sentence (1867)
thank you for this 😁
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was so helpful! Thank you for the clear explanations.
This channel needs more love.
Thanks! I appreciate it! I hope it gets more attention as time goes on!
Yeah. No thanks to either one. Both subdue constitutional rights
I like to have opportunity and be self sufficient. I don't want a government to feed me or own the roof over my head. I don't want to support people who do not want to contribute.
Karl Marx said they were the same lol
Neither of your definitions of these ideologies are correct.
When you defined socialism, you specifically defined state socialism, which functions through a democratic government, the true definition of socialism is more simple, worker / collective control / ownership of the means of production.
There is no central government under communism, communism is by definition, a stateless, classless, moneyless, communal society.
It’s my understanding that private property, not personal property, is abolished under communism. “You get to keep your toothbrush”
Thank you! This is very helpful ❤
