Hi guys! Welcome back to my channel. In today's video I discuss the term 'Dangerous' airports. What makes an airport dangerous? Think for example about Airplane Performance, Terrain, Weather conditions and Air traffic control. Some runways are short due to surrounding terrain, they just can’t be any longer. Climb gradients can be high due to surrounding terrain as well, there could be a mountain on the extended centerline.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to comment below and maybe I will be answering your question in the next video. If you liked my video do not forget to SUBSCRIBE and THUMBS UP!

In 1997, I was late for a flight at London City to Rotterdam by VLM. I had to dash across the tarmac and board. I needed to get to the office in Rotterdam by 10am. The plane took off and flew slowly over central London turning at Buckingham Palace. I looked at the passages and noticed they were mostly school children. I thought the worst that I have accidently got on the wrong flight which is a sightseeing trip. The captain started taking about the sights you could see from the aircraft.
After five minutes, the captain announced, today we have schoolchildren aboard, and therefore I wanted to show London to them, we are now off to Rotterdam and I will make up the time. And he did, we arrived a few minutes early.
Loved this seque.
Pre 9/11 flying was something else! I understand this is in the UK, but I imagine protocols have changed since 1997 as well. It was always a treat to have an aviation enthusiast in the cockpit during cruise back in the day :)
She is brilliant. Not because she has so much knowledge but because she is able to share it with the average lay person so that it makes sense. The brilliance is in her teaching ability. Her brain is always three steps ahead like a chess player.
Enjoyed hearing just how smart you are when you started explaining complications that might arise based on various factors in second half of video. I know idea difficult for some people to grasp, but I loved every minute of this.
Wow so cool to see london from above
Great way to think about airports being challenging and not dangerous.
No airline employee is gonna show you their doubts
One of the best pilot channels out there. I love it! Keep it, girl!
Incredible video. Beautifully edited, lovely graphics, and then thoroughly educated by a brilliant and stunning woman.
What an excellent video. She does an excellent job of describing everything. She has super facial expressions and she's my favorite pilot for sure.
The beginning was so satisfying. What a great video. Hope you are doing good, too✌
Yes, it really was, as well as her pretty face in the second part. She is so cute and adorable.
Attila Kiss her accent 🤤
Such a shame being a man! A woman that looks good makes a video about something, and all you guys do is writing about her look or accent... Don‘t you think that she would rather read comments about her work? And by the way, she will daily meet man like you during her work!
Martin Sofka they are allowed to compliment her but I get what your saying we shouldn’t drool over her or make her uncomfortable
Really enjoyable opening to your video. I liked the callouts of some landmarks as well as some notes on what you are doing on approach. Thank you!
I once flew there marking my father's 30th anniversary since returning to his homeland. The year was 1969.
It was a magical time for him since leaving 1939.Connected with his brother and many relatives.
We stayed a month.
Loved this video, I used to work at Reuters in London, our docklands building is directly opposite the millennium dome, loved watching the aircraft fly over us coming into land.
Keep up the brilliant work……
Amazing video. Short useful information, beautiful Michelle and the approach on the beginning. Thank you Michelle :3
The Shard - 72 floors, 6 bars. Glad to see you're keeping track of the important stuff!
What a beautiful (and probably stressful) approach!
What a beautiful Pilot?!
No, approaching LCY is normally not stressful but you need to be qualified and that takes quite some training! You are not always flying in perfect weather conditions. It is not only challenging due to the steeper 5.5 degrees approach (until approx. 60 feet above the runway) but flying on runway 09 also requires a typical approach with some nice turns over the city (but that's up to the autopilot) and if you must avoid inbound traffic to Heathrow you fly low at 2000 ft. You take manual control at 1000 ft (autopilot cannot handle it) and from there it is straight forward. Glideslope interception is just before Canary Wharf. If you are not used to a steep approach, by default it is rather difficult to orientate, because you are used to a 3 degree slope. It just doesn't comply with what you are used to. I've only flown it in the simulator (Dash8) but being not used to it, must say it ain't easy.
@@francinevanzanten8368 Trust me, there is a stress involved in such steep approach in this size of the airplane. In Dash-8 it is going so fast, London City has pretty short Rwy and it is not really wide either, when you are approaching from Canary Warf side and you need a steeply go down you have power on idle, full flaps, gear down and it still feels like you are accelerating during approach having papi lights on correct glide. I've done it few times and it is always challenging and a bit scary no matter how experienced you are.
If you are not used to something it is automatically making you feel nervous, the lack of possible adjustments to pitch makes you even more nervous. It IS in fact difficult approach!
Michael Ksiezopolski I’m with you on that one.
Michael Ksiezopolski as someone who works in aviation, I really wanted to see the approach to LCY, and I did, in a bad weather. It can be and it was a terrifying experience. I have flown on a Q400, and as a former system engineer, I knew all the problems of that aircraft(flap power fault, hydraulic leaks in the nacelle, lock link issue on NLG, spoiler actuator AD,proximity sensor issues which got worse after introduction of new PSEU).When you have such a steep approach(it is really visible in Q400, it seems like it is falling from the sky), strange flare, and short runway surrounded by water in a bad weather, I believe it is really challenging for a pilot to land there.
I flew into the old Hong Kong Airport in the 1990's in a 747. It was awesome!!!
Same here it was crazy
rockin and rollin'
yes Kai Tak...here's a simulated approach: ua-cam.com/video/Gi9svs-X3rA/v-deo.html
Oh man....I'm so jealous! Unfortunately I only know this from the videos on youtube. Kai Tak must have been amazing in real life.
Then they turned it into a cruise ship terminal. I was on the first ship that ever docked there, Mariner Of The Seas, doing a repositioning cruise from Galveston to Shanghai...
The flight into London was a spectacular scenic flight and a pretty short runway it is. Your talk on the challenges is reassuring. Nice video.
Very interesting video Michelle about the challenges pilots face every day , well done and continued safe flying to you.
I love this. The music is perfect, so airy, so tranquil. I live in the UK and it’s great seeing London like this. I love the text and text sounds. So James Bond like. I showed my 90 yr old father (who worked 35 years as a crew chief mechanic for American Airlines based at LAX) and his eyes lit up watching you land with crosswinds. You’re doing a fantastic job with your flying videos. Keep them coming.
YAY THIS WAS MY REQUEST! thanks so much for doing this!!! I enjoyed it keep up the good work
Hi DutchPilotGirl! I just recently found you on UA-cam and you've immediately shot to the top of my "Must View" videos. Your presentations are very full of life & energy and easily understandable to those of us who are not pilots but fascinated by aviation. This London City landing was beautiful, terrific and amazing. The photography was beautiful, and together with the music, made the whole video dream-like. Please keep the videos coming and hope you are having a great day as well!
again.... amazing video!! love it, superb job.
YAY THIS WAS MY REQUEST! thanks so much for doing this!!! I enjoyed it keep up the good work
Buttery landing by the way
Excellent video. Amazing. Pilots make it look so easy. I’m taking flying lessons and this video has inspired me to get in the air more frequently. I currently use X-Plane 11 as a ground based sim. Love your videos! So glad I found these and subscribed!!
I got lost in London many times but you where right on! Smile! You come along way dear!
Your channel is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing these views. Great video!
I remember London City airport well. Flew Dash-7 turboprops into the place while it was still an 800metre runway. 7 1/2 degree approach angle. Huge fun.
Awesome video, love watching your take off & landing vlogs the cockpit views are truly amazing💗😀
I have watched videos of that airport coming in right off the beach and when that big planes take off those people line up to get hit by the thrust sometimes getting knocked over. I would not think that would be a very good situation with the sand flying everywhere so much for getting your kicks and giggles. Love your videos keep them up Dutch pilot girl.
She has excellent facial expressions and is so much fun to watch and listen to. I'm no expert on airports or airplanes, but I'm pretty good on what I do or don't like. I like to watch her videos. Very educational and in my opinion, very well done. I think I'm in love.
Damn girl, beautiful video and music. Nicely done. Awesome POV.
Looooooooved this video: the sights, música, editing, the info layout, everything! Excellent work!!!!
Really enjoy your work DPG! I ran an airport for 2 cities in Colorado here in the Rocky Mountain West.. but your videos really offer insight and feeling for the love of aviation.. nicely done!
Frank from Boulder, Colorado, USA
Never saw London before from the air. Very beautiful.
Let's see you landing in challenging situations.
If you see it from the ground it's not so nice these days. At least it still looks good from the air.
I like the way you outlined so many factors, each and all of them very important to improve safety; you even mentioned the language factor that affects situational awareness; please keep on that path; you're a gem in all senses!
I could have watched that approach all day... magical
P.S. your videos are perfection, the layout, font types, sound effects & presentation.
Beautiful video. Really beautiful and interesting. Great Michelle.
I had Lukla in my mind as I started watching this, I have been to this area of London many times and took for granted what is obvious now.
Fascinating, thumbs up.
Wow, I didn't remember London looking so snazzy. It's changed so much since I was there 25 years ago. Thank you for your educational and sensational videos. I am glad I subscribed a few days ago.
The beginning was amazing!! 😍 Thank you for this 💗
What a fantastic and breathtaking view over London. It must be a great landing experience.
You have quite the office, great choice of music. I'm sure this never gets old. Thank you for posting this!
What a satisfying start. I wish that hadn't ended.
Always loving Aviation and Dutch Girl pilot from LUKLA, NEPAL...
Great info and insight into a pilots world. Thank you!
Thanks dutch pilot girl for this wonderful adventure. By watching this comes my dreams hopefully that oneday I will be a pilot like you.
Fab Video. Thanks -
Excellent information put over is a very pleasurable and watchable manner, thank you
Yes! You read my topic suggestion. Fantastic approach, beautiful scenery and wonderful explanations of different approaches in different airports. 👍
Thank you so much for that information. It’s very kind of you to explain the factors at play regarding aircraft arrivals & departures. Regards 👍
Loved this video. So soothing and the flight pattern was excellent. Great pilot!
I could listen to her all day, every day 😍
You just reminded me of my trip to Hong Kong many years ago. Of all the airports I’ve been to, looking out the window while we landed at Kai Tak was the most memorable of all.
Hi
Wow, that beginning brought amazing memories back. It was October 2014, just a few days before I became infected with the aviation virus. 2:45 North Greenwich Station. That place where I watched planes approaching the airport while waiting with my classmates for our pickup. Thank you Michelle
Yes.
No danger,only challenging.
Smart human can handle any odds.
Your video always the best.
Mind quenching.
Almighty bless you all time.
Wow, stunning opening to this video, loved it!! Very interesting info, thanks D.P.G.
I only just found this video, Thank you for changing dangerous airports to challenging. Much better. London City Airport, I used to deliver and collect new cars from there when it was the Royal Docks. That very place where the airport is, was where cars from America came, they were the American Embassey staff cars. I would collect them from that dock and take them to the embassey in London.
The beginning of this video was SO cinematic. I loved it !
Love, love the video, Michelle! Please do more!
I enjoyed that. I am no pilot but i did grow up in East London in the 1970s and remember the London City Airport area as the Royal Docks although they were very run down by then.....
Beautiful editing. Love the choice of music.
This was really an amazing video ... Loved it
The best approach video i have watched in a long time.
Very informative. Thanks Dutch Pilot Girl.
wow how nice!! the music is awesome. Thanks DPG!!
I really love this yt channel
I just got a 65" TV and the beginning was spectacular! And thanks for pointing out the sights, and the details. Very cool. 👍
Hi Michelle, prachtig, wat een super mooie intro en heldere uitleg.
Bedankt!
Good explanations to some challenging technical material. Great Video.
nice video maam
Nice editing of the approach. Great explanation of what makes an airport challenging.
Thank You for taking the time to explain short runway landing! Very interesting to hear and learn about this things that You Pilots go thought to make flying a great and enjoyable experience 👍 Mahalo 🌸 for all You do…… 👩✈️
Cool video. Beautiful approach.
Hi Michelle,
Love your introduction and the details about London.
Excellent your explanation about all things related to dangerous airports.
I watch some youtube videos of Nepal airport, which is between 3 mountains and you have to do it in 1 attempt because there is no GoAround.
Very informative and extremely well explained
3:30 - that patch of land below to the right is where the Stormzy - Vossi Bop video was shot.
Amazing video - very nicely graded! I've flown into City a few times, and easily my favourite approach was in a Dash 8 coming from Glasgow - we came in from the east, circled around the airport and did a super tight right hand turn over Canary Wharf into runway 10.
that was excellent!
Prachtige en leerrlijke video. Ik geniet er altijd van. Lots of succes with your work and all the info you share.
Interesting and informative. Thanks for taking the time to produce.
The descent into London City is beautiful on a clear day!

Terrific video. That is one short runway for a heavy.
Great opening video. Thank you.
Very good video, informative and dealing with the challenges of these uniqe airports :)
Loved the starting.
Awesome!! Thanks for your brilliant channel!
Thumbs up DutchPilotGirl - interesting clip and well done - Lovely to see a professional - happy flying from us all
I’ve always been fascinated when I fly. I know a lot now thanks to videos like yours. I’ve only ever been on one go around on all the flights I have been on. That was at Gatwick with high winds. We got down on the second go…..I was slightly nervous….lol!
oh wow.. legit goosebumps.. also great production o,o
A fantastic video looking down on London from the cockpit this airport has a difficult approach coming in over river Thames but yourself and pilot made it look so easy and you are so cool/ calm brilliant once again and very informative.watching from belfast northern ireland
Thanks for such great information and a beautiful flight to London. I'm going to tighten my seat belt now, bye.
