My absolute favourite airport anywhere! I love that, effectively, the runway is a motorway bridge! And Madeira is such a stunning island, it's always worth a revisit
Super video. I remember some challenging take offs and landings, as a passenger, some 20 years ago before the runway extension. Aircraft could not take off with a full load of fuel, resulting in a short trip to the adjacent island, Porto Santo, and full refuel in order to take off on thier longer runway. Landings were also a challenge with pilots informing passengers that they may 'go around' if they did not like the final part of the approach given the winds from the mountins and the very short runway. Landings resulted in heavy reverse thrust and hard breaking, ending with lots of passenger applause from the cabin!
Absolutely stunning. The extra graphics referencing the CLs, all the procedures, the charts, etc. adds an extra element that increases the immersion. I'd love to become a pilot.
Excellent video, Michelle ! Your presentation of the take off makes one feel that we are sitting in the cockpit watching the event live. Thank you once again for another inspiring and exciting video. Happy flying.
i'm so impressed with these videos, i never realized how so many things went into preparing a flight. you make it look a lot easier than it is. thank you for taking the time to teach us these things
Thank you for the nice video! It was fun to see a take-off sequence. In fact the take off was very quick and smooth. The views of Madeira are breathtaking! Awesome!
@@DutchPilotGirl Hello. I was curious, but were you in the Dutch air force? If you were, do you prefer flying fighters or large cargo transports and airliners? Thank you.
We landed here in May. It eas kind of scary as the wind was so strong that after on attempt we diverted to Tenerife were we had a terrible landing. Lots of circeling before we made it. So I have the highest respect for what you are able to do in stressed situation like this. We got one less day on Madeira but it was worth it. I enjoy your videos.
Another brilliant video, Michelle, full of great content. Have you ever considered a Q and A session? Your videos are so engaging, and prompt a few questions here and there! Keep them coming!
Another great take off Michelle. Thank you. My sister worked for Sabina Airlines. She nearly started working for Air India. When an Air India plane crashed in Mount Blanc. But the Air hostess that was on that flight was my friends sister. They lived on top of our flat. Her father was devastated, when he heard of the accident.
Thank you Michelle for these beautiful videos, as always very professional I'm always waiting for your videos, thank you again for your time, God bless you.
I always have the feeling that qualifying for landing/take-off at Funchal is closely akin to qualifying for the same on an aircraft carrier. Thanks for this one, Michelle. I've watched a few cockpit videos of landings in Madeira but yours is the first I've seen of a take-off. I waved to Manual Caldeira as we took off. He produces excellent UA-cam videos on restoration of vintage radios and we passed him to port on the way out.
Enjoyed your video. I was on this island last week while our cruise ship was making a port call there. I enjoyed your well-produced and informative video. Thanks for sharing, well done!!!!
Madeira take-offs are always west to east. And yet they still do a turn to the right to get away from the hills and be able to fly above the sea. From the picture she showed, they fly off back to Europe in a different corridor from planes coming in. Like two lanes traffic road. In the other video when she landed it was also west-east which forces a hard turn right since planes usually come from east. That hard turn is always something else. I've been in other landings where the planes did turns, but the one in Madeira is one you can't ignore. The sea and high hills create such striking reference points that you can't help the butterflies in your stomach. I actually would like to see a landing east-west. It's the rarest. And understand why the winds usually don't allow it. So, Michelle, here is the request. If you happen to land east-west, please make a video and explain to us all the little details.
Nicely done, Michelle. Thanks for taking your viewers inside of a cockpit of a 737. Pulling for you and praying for your continued safety in the American Midwest, north of Chicago. Safe flying and happy landings. We are on your side.
As a truck driver I pass thru Chicago every week, I so enjoy passing OHARE and watching the incoming flights and the takeoffs. Too bad I can’t park the big rig and really enjoy more closely.
I have known you a few days ago and I want to become a pilot and I knew that you made a book ( Become An Airline Pilot ) and I really wanna buy it You are an amazing pilot and I wanna be like you one day ❤❤❤
I am very impressed with the videos and how professionally they present the information. One thing: what about a crisis situation? What unusual events are you trained for in a simulator that you may need to have an "automated checklist" in your mind to prepare? For example, when I first learned to ride a motorcycle in my mid-teens, I took a training course. I'll never forget the instructor saying, "Be prepared to think that every vehicle on the road will kill you. Prepare for an "out"--a way of avoiding or escaping whatever situation you're in. Look far ahead to determine traffic flow and possible problems." That meant preparing with emergency braking, running into a ditch, heading toward a driveway or parking lot entrance as a method of escape, handling your motorcycle on wet or dirty roads, and so on. I had to run through escape scenarios and be prepared to execute them while riding. It greatly elevated my defensive driving style when I began driving cars. I've still had accidents--but could have had many more, and worse. Thanks again for your flights! 🤩
As always, an interesting and informative video, Michelle. Next week I'll be on a long haul flight for the first time in years, having formerly been a frequent flier for my work (I'm now retired) It's reassuring to have knowledge of what's happening up at the sharp end! Many thanks.
Thank you very much to take us with you into the Cockpit!😃 It´s really a difficult Approach and Take-Off! The Airport faced three Crashes back in the 1970ies - it´s of course a long time ago and the Aircraft´s in use have changed very much since then, but it´s indeed nevertheless a real challenge to operate at this Airport.
It was only one accident. A plane landing could not stop the plane in time on a rainy day, if memory serves me right. The runway is in high terrain. It fell off the runway. The airport was too small for how bigger the airplanes were becoming. There were probably some near misses as well. They did an extension and later the huge engineering wonder that is the runway extension nowadays.
If you ever come, you will be spoiled for choice. Lots of different paths. Different difficulty levels. Be prepared to join excursions for the better known paths. In a bus you can seat from 9 up to 60 people. The parkings are not big enough for those same people and their rented cars. Lesser known paths you'll be ok. Respect weather warnings, stay on the path. Always inform someone of where you will be if you go alone.
Hey Michelle great video...dont know but the intro watching you, your pretty hands and hair ❤ love it..its amazing those pretty hands handle so many buttons and such aircraft..anyhow you RD best DutchPilotDoll...have a great week and be safe❤
Cruise ship. I'm not sure if the ferry is back... There was a service from Canary Islands, Spain, to Portimão in the Algarve, south of Portugal and to Madeira Islands, Portugal. But it stopped. Not sure if it has already returned. If yes, probably only in the summer months.
excellent video, beautiful island, Michelle you have come a long way and you have become very professional, I think your airline should start considering you soon to start flying on the left side of the cockpit with an extra bar over you shoulder, good luck, and god bless you.

Yes, the runway on both sides ends higher than the surrounding terrain. You can say it ends on a cliff... 😉 You can actually be on the bottom of one side on footh. It's a regular road with a sidewalk. And just look up at the belly of the airplanes landing.

Saw a documentary once about it. They had a LOT of issues in designing and constructing the runway. Was fascinating what they all had to account for.
Another great video Michelle and another great location. I do hope you get some personal time to enjoy these places. Keep up the amazing work!

For fifty years now that feeling at vr still blows me away and I remember the first time , it just happened again, thanks.❤
I have not flown a plane since the early 70s. I just love watching you fly, you are so skilled. Be safe and please keep the videos coming !

That was fun. I didn't feel any turbulence during takeoff. Such is life on UA-cam. 👍👍👍
