Last update that I can find - the Magistrate Judge presiding over Joshua Rohrer's case has decided in FAVOR of Joshua, and recommends DENYING qualified immunity to corrupt Gastonia cops Maurice Taylor III and Cierra Brooks on all but one of Joshua's claims. This is so sad on many levels and he deserves any and all compensation awarded. I hope the comminty will continue to monitor of the actions of the police still employed.
I live in NC, cops here are trained to escalate. They are 100% quota based employees regardless of what they say. They wanted to arrest and they manipulated the situation to meet their goals. Cops here are animals

I know Josh. My dad served in Iraq with him. He has the kindest heart out there and has pushed through the very unfortunate hand he has been dealt. He is still deeply affected by this event and has been working hard to get justice over this. Thank you for covering his story; he was so wrongly assaulted.

What I noticed was how they all backed down and got outta there - they all looked afraid that those thugs would start on them next. They must have quite a reputation. I'll bet it took a lot of guts for those people to call those thugs out - each one definitely was upset about what they were seeing. And each one looked damned afraid. Not good. He was always happy to sit on my shoulder but one day in a busy gas station he flew off and pretty high. At first he was playing with me then he flew very far away. I lost my mind and went home but came out back to search for him. I parked in a spot and gave up hope, and looked up at the tree to the right of me and there was my parrot friend. Suffice it to say we were able to bring him down as he seemed scared by climbing 20-30 feet of a tree
It is an outrage that the Sgt is not in jail. He lied about refusing to ID, he lied about getting bit and he lied about the dog being aggressive before using his taser. Then again harassing the vet on his own facebook page using the official police account makes me think that whole PD is rotten
As a disabled combat veteran, I’m not even pissed off like I usually would be. This made me cry. Really cut me deep. Everywhere veterans are treated like this.

The “you’re disrupting traffic” line is hilarious. She has her car parked in a traffic lane, and then another officer pulls up and parks in the middle of the freaking intersection.
I can only imagine how horrible that veteran must've felt after his dog was harmed and he already has PTSD... you can hear the fear and trauma in his voice.

i already knew in the beginning the dog prob gonna get hurt cuz he want to defend his owner, that got attacked. and we know how stupid police is, thinking when they forcefully grab someone, surely the dog aint gonna do anything. As a vet with PTSD, this video was difficult to get through and these lying cops should be fired and charged asap. I'm going to pray for Josh's recovery and hope he gets all of the help he needs. Don't give up brother, you deserve better!
As a vet with PTSD this video triggered me and I am shaking right now. If I were in that situation I would have reacted much worse than he did and would be lucky to be alive.
I'm not a vet but I do have ptsd from being sa'ed several times in my early teens and it was heartbreaking to see sunshine try to comfort her owner like she was trained then get tased because of it. That officer should've gotten charged and animal cruelty and kicked off the force.
This made me tear up. Brooks, the female cop, created the whole situation. She refused to accept that maybe her interpretation of events was wrong and didn't want to hear his side of things. Everything that happened, even indirectly like the death of the dog, was her fault. She is an example of the worst kind of cops: those who see the poor or homeless as less than people and thus not part of the community they serve. Her ego trip caused needless suffering and the death of an innocent animal.
Brooks of all people (black and female) should understand the heartbreak of being marginalized and thought of as unimportant and less than human. Yet here she is inflicting the same pain on a disabled vet.

I wish I was a bystander who was there, those cops would have had another person to worry about. You mess around with a helpless kind animal, I will make you find out. No matter who you are. People who are like that shouldn't be cops, it shows how little they value life and they lack compassion. I could care less about feelings and how they were hurt but they straight up need to have a true compassion for others in order to be effective.

I am a veteran. I watch a lot of these videos. The thought of him trying to end his own life because the loss of Sunshine, perhaps maybe one of the few true friends he has (not to mention the care she provides for him) literally made me get up and take a moment. How awful, how disheartening, how inhumane this whole situation is.
Heartbreaking. I hope he has a really caring therapist to help him. Incredible that he is a vet with PTSD and must have experienced some terrible things and yet this is what he calls the worst day of his life. He loves his dog.

I don't get angry very easily, but watching the reprehensible and pernicious conduct displayed in this video has me absolutely fuming. Those officers had such a vile and observable contempt for this homeless man. So much so, that they deliberately escalated it so they could inflict punishment on him because of it. Let me get this straight: These two officers arrested a homeless veteran with mental illness for minuscule crimes and then tased his disability support dog?! I have watched many videos on ATA. I have never been so upset at an officer's action. Indeed, "ego" fueled this entire encounter. These officers have the wrong temperament for the job and do not protect and serve. Their actions were egregious across the board and merited the termination of their jobs. Rest in peace, Sunshine.
Not minuscule crimes. Their “local laws” were a violation of the 1st amendment. There was no crime here, and police have acted this way for years. When people allowed police to get away with violating the rights of criminals they opened the door to rights violations across the board. The next time you see someone with a criminal history getting treated this way for no reason it should concern you like it does now. Just as we are given free will by our creator, those documents affirm our inalienable rights - those we are born with. Obviously we need a huge overhaul in our education system in general, not only police training. Bring back Civics classes - if people had a better education in how our government works and what those documents mean, law enforcement training wouldn't need basic courses in civil rights. They could teach more than the basics. A bigger tragedy would be if he sacrificed so much for nothing. We owe it to our vets to support them when they come home so badly damaged. They deserve our respect and support. The way he was targeted and disrespected by this female LEO is a disgrace. She should know better. It is up to us to see this is dealt with. As a vet, it was extremely painful to watch this. I just can't imagine the complete lack of empathy and compassion from the Gastonia PD and the DA. They need a complete re-vamp. My pops was army for 34 years. Poor, working class and was recruited at 16. Spent his life doing what he thought was serving his country, comes home and the average person has no respect or regard for vets. Doubt he gives a shit, but I do. Being a dog owner, this case immediately hit me hard. Sunshine was clearly a good and beautiful dog. I feel so bad for him losing his best friend. It brought tears to my eyes. These cops are tyrants and deserve to lose their jobs for this. It's very scary to think that this could happen to me and it'd be completely out of my control.

I remember when my dog got hit by a car worst day of my life and ran for a mile and a half screaming watching her eyes flutter in and out of consciousness when got to the vet luckily they saved her life but she wasn’t the same I cried for hours days after now thank the Lord she is now back to normal and turns 2 next month
As someone who is currently homeless in a town where the police department more like a mafia, I am terrified of the day I have to interact with them and have to "refuse" to give them my address.
Because theyre nothing but a bunch of hypocrites! "Rules for thee but not for me" ive been pulled over for having a headlight out (there was actually nothing wrong with the vehicle) and the officers cruiser had a headlight out. I told her that they work fine & when she came back from double checking i told her that She has one out though, thats when she claimed to smell Marijuana.
Too bad these "officers" weren't held accountable for the dog's death! Never once did Sunshine stop wagging her tail, raise her hackles, or try to defend the poor owner! I have to say that I cried through this, also. The dog didn't deserve tazing! The officers...how many of them ended up out there? Fifteen? Twenty? And all over a possible $5-10 maximum donation? But what truly broke my heart... Sunshine! My own service dog? She, also, was named Sunshine. And she almost got shot in the backseat of my car when I was stopped for a ridiculous reason that couldn't even justify a ticket. But my Sunshine put her head over the seat, trying to figure out what was happening. Her tail, also, was wagging. I feel so for this gentleman! And not to mention the dog!

The supreme court ruled on a daytona beach case in florida that it does violate ones speech to arrest or harass or ticket a person simply asking for help. Panhandling. It isnt illegal.

Liar is right!! The dog was more concerned about his master and from the film clip didn't seem interested at all in hurting the police. Any arrest that officer makes should be heavily scrutinized for lies. I would also guess that attorneys will be looking at any cases he testified in trying to find other potential lies. Came to this story after reviewing a story out of Ironton Ohio where it seemed as though several members of the PD, the jail staff, and the Judges in the town were all engaged in lying or some other crimes. I've never cried so much during a UA-cam video. As a veteran I can't tell you how much our dogs mean to us. In a lot of cases they're the only ones some of us have left.
I ended up crying too. I'm not a vet. But I'm very empathetic and I know that no one on the outside can truly understand just how important your companion can be and how much they mean to you..I was already tearing up when they were threatening her.
Im a former Police Officer and a veteran who served overseas in Afghanistan. This video made me angry on so many levels. It’s baffling how an officer can behave in what I would consider a malicious manner with no sympathy or empathy for an individual.

I've watched dozens of these videos but I have to say that this one hits pretty hard. I can't imagine being in his shoes and losing your only solace and friend in the world due to cold blooded cruelty. The actions of these officers is reprehensible and they should absolutely he harshly punished. I just hope that this man gets the justice he deserves and can recover from this absolute nightmare. The veteran made one stupid mistake. He told the officers that he was taking it to trial. BIG MISTAKE! NEVER tell an officer that you're going to deer them in court. Stay quiet no matter how mad you may be. By telling them that you're going to fight them will only serve the officer(s) by making the remember more details.

This word is the root for most of the terms we use today. Including politician or politics. Policy is a much newer term that is not used globally. Last update that I can find - the Magistrate Judge presiding over Joshua Rohrer's case has decided in FAVOR of Joshua, and recommends DENYING qualified immunity to corrupt Gastonia cops Maurice Taylor III and Cierra Brooks on all but one of Joshua's claims. This is so sad on many levels and he deserves any and all compensation awarded. I hope the comminty will continue to monitor of the actions of the police still employed.

He was always happy to sit on my shoulder but one day in a busy gas station he flew off and pretty high. At first he was playing with me then he flew very far away. I lost my mind and went home but came out back to search for him. I parked in a spot and gave up hope, and looked up at the tree to the right of me and there was my parrot friend. Suffice it to say we were able to bring him down as he seemed scared by climbing 20-30 feet of a tree
It is an outrage that the Sgt is not in jail. He lied about refusing to ID, he lied about getting bit and he lied about the dog being aggressive before using his taser.

Police NEED to give veterans the respect they deserve
As a vet with PTSD this video triggered me and I am shaking right now. If I were in that situation I would have reacted much worse than he did and would be lucky to be alive.
I'm not a vet but I do have ptsd from being sa'ed several times in my early teens and it was heartbreaking to see sunshine try to comfort her owner like she was trained then get tased because of it. That officer should've gotten charged and animal cruelty and kicked off the force.
Charged by who? Oh, that's right. Nobody.
This made me tear up. Brooks, the female cop, created the whole situation. She refused to accept that maybe her interpretation of events was wrong and didn't want to hear his side of things. Everything that happened, even indirectly like the death of the dog, was her fault. She is an example of the worst kind of cops: those who see the poor or homeless as less than people and thus not part of the community they serve. Her ego trip caused needless suffering and the death of an innocent animal.
The icing on the cake is her talking smack about him and his dead dog on her social media account. Reprehensible

Let me get this straight: These two officers arrested a homeless veteran with mental illness for minuscule crimes and then tased his disability support dog?! I have watched many videos on ATA. I have never been so upset at an officer's action. Indeed, "ego" fueled this entire encounter. These officers have the wrong temperament for the job and do not protect and serve. Their actions were egregious across the board and merited the termination of their jobs. Rest in peace, Sunshine.
Not minuscule crimes. Their “local laws” were a violation of the 1st amendment. There was no crime here, and police have acted this way for years. When people allowed police to get away with violating the rights of criminals they opened the door to rights violations across the board. The next time you see someone with a criminal history getting treated this way for no reason it should concern you like it does now. You’d be surprised how many convictions are as false as this arrest.

As a vet, it was extremely painful to watch this. I just can't imagine the complete lack of empathy and compassion from the Gastonia PD and the DA. They need a complete re-vamp. Being a dog owner, this case immediately hit me hard. Sunshine was clearly a good and beautiful dog. I feel so bad for him losing his best friend. It brought tears to my eyes. These cops are tyrants and deserve to lose their jobs for this. It's very scary to think that this could happen to me and it'd be completely out of my control.
I had to scroll for sometime before finding a post that had sunshine in mind. I am disappointed in having to do so. Thank you for being the one to talk about it. I wish I had room for this man at my home. I’ve got two dogs that would love to be there for him. God that rest sunshine. That's insane, in the Netherlands it takes 2 years to be certified. No wonder so many f-up, 20 weeks is not even half a year.

I remember when my dog got hit by a car worst day of my life and ran for a mile and a half screaming watching her eyes flutter in and out of consciousness when got to the vet luckily they saved her life but she wasn’t the same I cried for hours days after now thank the Lord she is now back to normal and turns 2 next month

I told her that they work fine & when she came back from double checking i told her that She has one out though, thats when she claimed to smell Marijuana.
Kind of like getting a No Seat Belt ticket from a motorcycle cop. That's when you know it's not about safety.
Too bad these "officers" weren't held accountable for the dog's death! Never once did Sunshine stop wagging her tail, raise her hackles, or try to defend the poor owner! I have to say that I cried through this, also. The dog didn't deserve tazing! The officers...how many of them ended up out there? Fifteen? Twenty? And all over a possible $5-10 maximum donation? But what truly broke my heart... Sunshine! My own service dog? She, also, was named Sunshine. And she almost got shot in the backseat of my car when I was stopped for a ridiculous reason that couldn't even justify a ticket. But my Sunshine put her head over the seat, trying to figure out what was happening. Her tail, also, was wagging. I feel so for this gentleman! And not to mention the dog!

The supreme court ruled on a daytona beach case in florida that it does violate ones speech to arrest or harass or ticket a person simply asking for help. Panhandling. It isnt illegal.

Liar is right!! The dog was more concerned about his master and from the film clip didn't seem interested at all in hurting the police. Any arrest that officer makes should be heavily scrutinized for lies. I would also guess that attorneys will be looking at any cases he testified in trying to find other potential lies.
Came to this story after reviewing a story out of Ironton Ohio where it seemed as though several members of the PD, the jail staff, and the Judges in the town were all engaged in lying or some other crimes. Disgusting.

He gets out and is now a cop with the Port Orange PD in Florida. He seems like the type who, without his badge and gun, would be nothing more than a chump.

I've watched dozens of these videos but I have to say that this one hits pretty hard. I can't imagine being in his shoes and losing your only solace and friend in the world due to cold blooded cruelty. The actions of these officers is reprehensible and they should absolutely he harshly punished. I just hope that this man gets the justice he deserves and can recover from this absolute nightmare. Nobody acting in good faith deserves this kind of cruelty.

This word is the root for most of the terms we use today. Including politician or politics. Policy is a much newer term that is not used globally. Hands down one of the most upsetting AtA videos I have ever seen. The corruption, condescension, and blatant lying even in the face of body and witness cameras is astounding. It breaks my heart that Sunshine's life ended the way it did and that the vet suffered from the loss of her, which was entirely preventable from the get-go . These "cops" are horrid cops and people, as are any of the government officials that are protecting, excusing, and covering up for them. Beyond disgusting.

The sooner all of us recognize the police are a government entity and therefore the antithesis of freedom of the people, the better.
A convicted felon doesn’t deserve to be treated like this either if they have paid their debt to society, and I can’t believe I still see people just now realizing this. You should take a look at how many people spend years and decades in prison on false charges. Also take a look at who profits from the very large private prison system in this country, and how arresting agencies get paid to house offenders. The tax payer is ultimately responsible for all these actions.
LOL @ "Call your dog off." That dog wasn't "on" anything or anyone, and from what I can see, the officers were at risk of being drooled upon and nothing more. I want to see the medical report for that "bite". Edit: officer says "it bit my foot"?! Which is protected by a boot. Did it latch on and pull? cause any injury? Didn't think so. From the time they started trying to put the suspect in handcuffs, until they tazed the dog, the dog didn't bark once. This officer is making up "facts" on the spot to justify the actions he wants to take to make his life easier: to wit, tazing the dog, and arresting the vagrant, so he can get this "interaction" over with.
They won't face justice, this is America, not a normal country.
