I love those scenes.

Actually, it’s a wine tasting theme.
The name sommelier is literally a wine specialist. Throughout the discussion with the armorer he’s using words like “bold” and “tasting” to describe trying out wines.
The thing hanging around his neck is a tastevin, used by a sommelier for tasting and judging various wines.
@@TViper2369 Thanks, I had no idea there was such a thing.

@Okitan I'm afraid that will be beyond his capabilities as well, as I share his pure joy at witnessing each and every frame of this masterpiece.
And the music fits so well
ME TOO OMFG haha
A sommelier who's bored of the regular customers...then a connoisseur like John Wick walks in that challenges his depth of knowlege. It's exciting for him. Finally a customer that appreciates the finer things. His look when John asked for dessert
I fear i would disappoint him, though. If I asked him for a Smith and Wesson M&P (my preferred weapon), he'd probably look at me like I ordered a cheeseburger and a Budweiser.
EDIT: Oops, I retract that. I saw one on the pillow, under all the Glocks. A Taurus PT92, too.
@@oddish4352Sometimes a cheeseburger and beer is exactly what is required: while a man of the Sommelier’s…sophistication may have sampled the very finest of delicacies, he is also likely a man who appreciates the right tool for the right job; you would not necessarily want to bring an aged wine and a Michelin-starred meal to a backyard cookout. The true professional would be prepared for all eventualities, as long as the pairing was right.
@@LOVEMUFFIN_official He looks like someone who would appreciate you as long as you know what you are doing, you would prefer cheeseburger while on the run instead of full course French, for example.

You know the James bond is out of his element.
The sommelier’s face when Wick says dessert is phenomenal
Peter Serafinowicz is an unappreciated master in the world of acting. The trouble is, the British turn out so many outstanding artists that there isn’t enough films for him anymore.
Oh and, yeah, he was the voice of Darth Maul.
Well, streaming services exist in todays day n age
One of my absolute favorite things about the John Wick movies is how polite everyone is to him. Like when he wasn’t actually carrying out assassinations, he was just a solid guy that made friends with just about everyone he met through the Table. You can tell the shopkeepers even treat him like one of their favorite customers.
John himself is always polite, respectful, and appreciative to everyone he meets in this sub-culture. He remembers everyone by name, from bodyguards to bartenders. He's also very knowledgeable and discriminating about their wares and services. And he never kills without cause, and shows mercy when he practically can. As cold-blooded mass murderers go, he's pretty classy.
Because he was the best. A legend. The one you call to kill the bogeyman.

Seldom are those who are best at war very warlike.
Cool bit of trivia: the "actor" playing the tailor in this scene, Luca Mosca, designed the costumes for the first two John Wick movies, and is also Keanu Reeves' personal tailor.
He did a great job!
That is very cool!
That’s so cool! Didn’t know that
I'm sure Kenau probably was keen for him after the script required a tailor. The odds are they'd be quite friendly, and this is a way of showing how much he likes his product. He probably just said act like he always does at a fitting.
Soderbergh did the same thing in Ocean's Eleven: the guy suiting up Saul is the costume designer, Jeffrey Kurland.
The armorer's speech pattern is impeccable

Rei, in Bushido: The Soul of Japan covers this point nicely.
Peter Serafinowicz is just so perfect in these scenes (the tinge of delight/appreciation over John asking about "dessert"), I have to come back and rewatch them every few weeks.
I love how the Armorer speaks. So pleasant and cordial, like a chef discussing how dinner will be prepared with the utmost care and finesse. It makes me laugh every time i see it. I really missed him in the fourth and 3rd movie.
Either John wick 5 needs to visit rome again or this man needs to get transferred to wherever the next movie takes place because we need more of him
@@gavinw.347 this 100% we need him again going over whatever weapon particulars are needed.
Well, when John first asks for him at the front desk, he calls him the "sommelier", which is a wine steward employed by very high end restaurants (and hotels). The language between the two of them is intentionally framed as if John were selecting what wines to serve with different courses at a fancy dinner.
Same thing with talking to the tailor about formal/social, what time of day, etc, which are all real considerations when you're getting a high-end, bespoke suit.

The coins aren’t monetary they represent favors almost. He gave him a lot to insure his secrecy. He is handing John the maps for the home of a high table member.
Probably because four services were provided:
-a map of the catacombs

I use Léon logic for this - the skill of an assassin is determined by the last weapon he learns, which is the knife. The pencil is what you learn as a graduate-level elective.
That's because his exact title is sommelier - as in wine steward. And barely anyone thinks to ask for dessert wine, so that's probably a little extra hit of niceties for him from John.
Peter Serafinowicz is fantastic as The Sommelier. The way his face glows when "dessert" is brought up is classic.

2:02 nice they mention this. body armour is thick for a reason, not just to stop the penetration but also soften impact. his suit will stop the bullet going through him, but the impact will still be painful
Well it should be cause this tupe of materials absorb all the kinetic energy but does not divide them equally and transfer it to the layer below it which is his clothing skin
So this given him a feeling like someone has stabbed you with a huge pin
Is it realistic? I'm a novice gun enthusiast with reasonable knowledge in body armor and penetration of cartridges, so when the tailor said "0 penetration, but quite painful" my brow furrowed a bit. Feels unrealistic that at least one asshole in the John Wickverse wouldn't be _the asshole_ that has a golden .50 D.E. or shoots with a .50 rifle at close range (I know I would, 'cause John is _that_ terrifying). So 0 penetration sounds dubious, it will stop the first or handful of first shots but after that? Body armor degrades with use, as any object.
@@genkureshima9834 I suspect John wasn't intending on getting shot more than once or twice.
@@Resi1ience
Watch one of the final scenes in the 4th movie, when John and Caine remove their jackets. You can literally hear dozens of shells falling off of the _tactical lining_ they're wearing. It's not about "intending" to be shot, in case you haven't noticed.
@@genkureshima9834 I dont think the tailor meant "zero penetration from anything, ever", just zero penetration from the pistol bullets that had just been fired at it in the scene. It becomes less realistic as the movies go on, since by the 4th film the same armored suits are shrugging off bullets without the wearers so much as wincing. I'm a big gun dork too, but it's so clear the John Wick movies were made by very passionate people, at least some of whom were also gun dorks. So I can suspend my disbelief.
The way he said "desert" back to john...oh I felt that, man could kiss him. But he's too professional for that.
The expression the armorer has for “dessert” for his fine “cutlery” just shows how maniacal this guy is. A guy who likes it up close and personal

What is great about this scene is that it builds character in John Wick. By this point the audience knows that Wick is an experienced killer. Despite this, Wick is still willing to ask the advice of others and take said advice.
All of the people he consults are as expert in their specialties, as he is in his.

As an admitted firearms enthusiast, there were only a couple great options here. The German Walthers and HKs that John's used in the past are still remarkably capable despite their age, but the Long Slide Glock options currently offer better capacity, and aren't a compromise on durability.
Despite the popular myths about their reliability, a reasonable AR15 is more robust than any AK known to man. As the money you spend on an AR increases, so to does the precision it's capable of delivering on target. A rack grade AR is 1-2MOA, but you can get sub MOA AR15s which is hard to beat. 5.56 doesn't mess around inside 200yards even out of an 11.5inch barrel. I highly doubt that they stock cheap rack grade AR15s at the Continental. The rest of the stock I can ID in the wine room are shotguns, 16-20in AR15/10s, and MP5s. The MP5 is a fine weapon, but it's still a pistol; and when you're expecting trouble you want a rifle. If it had been in stock, a P90 would have been an excellent choice as well.Terminal ballistics on 5.7FN are nuts, and a 50rnd magazine is :chefskiss: Something that I think people overlook about this, is that he's getting multiple weapons in case one of them gets damaged or destroyed, or isn't solving the problem. In an ideal world the AR15 would have solved everything. I'd have liked to see more AR15 mags stashed with the M4 in the cave fight before he transitioned to the Benelli.
It's REALLY hard to beat the Stoner M16/AR15 design.

Hi beautiful hows life treating you so far
The gun sommelier, who really stole the scene, is Peter Serafinowicz, a British comedian. Directors like putting comedians in small, but important roles because they're able to bring a lot of life to a character even while given relatively little material to work with. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul did it with Lavell Crawford and Bill Burr, but then went a step further by making a comedian one of its leads.
Comedians are amazing at playing weird stuff straight. The tailor is in real life Kenau's tailor.
He is also the voice of Darth Maul in Phantom Menace.
Also in Pasanger movie

The fact that John Wick is still talking in code even though there are two people in the room an the other is not is beyond me
It's not even code, since the Sommelier straight up says what the guns are anyways. He's just kind of pretentious. But nobody gets anywhere in the John Wick universe without a sense of style.
Not as much code, John is a man of a very few words. He doesn't say something if it isn't needed to be said, same way he kills. He doesn't kill someone if it isn't needed
Just before this scene, John asks Charon if the sommelier is in. A sommelier is someone whose whole job is to KNOW wines. They taste wines, learn the vintage, everything they can know about a wine, so they can recommend foods that pair well with it as well as help a customer find wines to fit their tastes. Notice John asks the sommelier for "a tasting." This man is a sommelier of weapons. John is merely following protocol. He takes his job very seriously, but also notice John's expression and how he says "a tasting." It's almost as if John doesn't care for the act of discussing weapons like someone would discuss wine, but John plays along. He uses this terminology because that's what the sommelier wants, and John obviously respects this man's recommendations. John is established as one of the best assassins in the world, if not THE best, yet he still asks the sommelier for his opinion when choosing weapons for this job. If John Wick is going to ask someone else to recommend a weapon, damn straight he's going to indulge the sommelier's eccentricities. You can even see the level of respect at the end when John asks for a recommendation for dessert. It's as if the sommelier doesn't get requests for knives much anymore, and is pleased that John would ask him for such a detail, when most assassins would probably be happy with any knife.

The scene I laughed at was the description of the body armor. All soft body armor is quite painful to be shot in. Its designed to be like a catchers mitt, catches the bullet but the energy still needs to go somewhere and that place is into the soft tissue of your body, so no penetration but all the bruising.
AHHHH!!!! NO!
Basically its the equivalent of getting shot at with paintballs.
They're not going to puncture your skin. But it'll hurt like hell and leave a lot of bruises.
@Furion Max not exactly. As he said, the bullet force has to somewhere. And the bullet momentum is much much more than a mere paintball
Its not just bruising, but it will cause internal damage, which will probably kill the person
@@Random_dud31 wonder what that says about arrows? Bc in the fourth movie the big main bodyguard got shot in the arm with an arrow and didn't even flinch.
One of my minor grips with John Wick 4 (which is still an excellent movie) is that they seem to forget entirely that the bullet proof suits don't make getting shot painless, they just ensure you'll survive. Everyone with one of them in John Wick 4 has little reaction to the shots deflecting off their suits.
They way he says “Dessert”
always gets me. Awesome scene!
One of the most satisfying shopping experiences ever!😂
I'd watch like an hour of John just shopping for new clothes and weapons. Its such a huge departure from the usual badass shootout and kill scenes it's oddly relaxing
I just love how everybody loves their role, it seems they had a lot of fun in this movie
It makes sense too. These people are professionals, tops in their field. It would be stranger if they DIDNT truly love their role.
And we definitely need to give a nod of appreciation for the woman running the combat effectiveness test on the suit., The look of intensity on her face for those few seconds, that is somebody I would not want to piss off with a gun in her hand, and you have to seriously appreciate the grouping of rounds that penetrated that suit material.
She should have cameo'd in 3 or 4!
Two handed press-out into an isosceles stance… Attention to detail was awesome (as is the actress).
@@jcdenton2187My headcanon is that she sewed the Marquis's suit (He hired the same place)
he's seen escorting Wick into Antonio's office. That's a position of high trust. Antonio wouldn't have a receptionist who didn't know her business right down to the last detail.
That woman came across as rather twitchy from the start. I wouldn't want to piss her off under any circumstances.
Robust, Precise. the look on his face. such a good scene.
Scenes like this combined with the shootouts are the reason why I think John Wick is the best action film franchise.
I love how the gentleman doing the tasting. Was so pleased that John asked for dessert. It was lovely to watch.
These scenes are incredible for so many reasons. The acting and dialog are fantastic but also shows the viewers a glimpse of how vast and intricate their organization is.
ITS SO ROBUST
When the Terminator does tactical shopping, it's about killing the target quickly.
When John Wick does tactical shopping, it's about killing the target quickly with style and elegance.
Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range
Imagine a T-800 made in the image and likeness of John Wick, programmed with the expertise of John Wick (not in regards of combat data or weaponry, but in regards of opportunities and usage of ordinary items as weaponry)
@@elementxxrider Sarah Conner wouldn’t stand a chance!
The shop scene in T1 is still amazing.
And extreme prejudice.
One of my all-time favorite movie scenes. All of them, their lines were perfect, but the armorer...he did a better job curating John's "menu" than some sommeliers and omakase chef's I've seen!
The Continental hotel chain caters to the international criminal elite, so it's reasonable that the services they provide use the very best personnel.
2:02 "quite painful I'm afraid". A fact that then will be entirely ignored thruout the rest of the franchise.
One of the best scenes in the four movies for sure!! "I'd like a tasting," lol, that line kills me every time
i loved the tactical suit in this, because you could tell how much they compromised efficacy for subtlety, he really reeled from every shot he took, always thought is was a bummer how in the late rmovies the tactical suit basically made you invincible
The John Wick films became increasingly unrealistic. In 4 the characters might as well be comic-book supers.
@@danieldickson8591 great movies in their own right, (3-4) but not quite the same
1&2 are definitely superior. Same with the fast and furious movies.@@danieldickson8591
Cool thing about the whole scene is the bald guy is the actual guy who did all the costumes for the movie. Keanu wanted him to do the parts for the tailor
Behind the Scenes tidbit?
From "we need guns, lots of guns" to a man with taste :)
To hear Angelo and the weaponary guy voice is like an ASMR to me. They sounds so professional.
The way he talks about the weapons n knives .. i almost feel like like sayin. ." Yes ill take the benelli m4 medium rare, the ar medium and for dessert, the knives w a little cherry 🍒 on top😅😅😅
This is customer service at its finest. I'm not into suits and guns but if these guys are selling, I would definitely buy. 😁
#Budapest ❤
The salesman needs an Oscar. He could get anyone to buy anything of anything hands down. They all killed there parts but to me the salesman was on another level
those are my favorite scenes and I love how they speak with both customer and weaponry with elegance and respect. I also love how the armorer and tailer keep within johns interests and or preferred favorites but also show him a different variety all at the same time while staying within his past preferences and faudness of a specific variety being from Germany.
Just the smile on his face "Dessert". No one appreciates a fine dessert anymore.
"Should your hands get...wet." I love that delivery.
