Raphtalia in this episode was amazing. Take note Hollywood. This is how you have a strong female character being traditionally feminine. Most of these woke (usually male feminist type) writers don't know how to do that trope anymore. Or do they think femininity is weak? Raphtalia was nurturing, empathetic, genuine and saved our hero from himself.
The character i was most infuriated by in this episode was actually the king. He criticizes the shield hero for having a slave (witch I agree is wrong of course) yet he as the king could probably use his influence pretty easily to end slavery. What a hypocrite
No he wasn't being a hypocrite, he wasn't even thinking on punishing the Shield hero for that. Te reason why he did it was because of the Spear Hero's reaction. Like Naofumi said, slavery is not forbidden in Melronarc. Not only that Demi-humans have close to no rights whatsoever. Not a single one of the royals or nobles think that it's wrong to own a demi-human slave. Still, if it's going to punish the Shield hero, they will definitely change their minds. It wasn't shown yet, but the main religion in this country only aknowledges 3 of the heroes. According to their holy scriptures the shield hero is not a hero but a demon. This is the main reason why everyone always try to sabotage the Shield hero.
@@TheKing-ve7lz You are probably only watching the anime right? What I Said it's so Minor to the plot and so easy to conjecture that it shouldn't disrupt anyone's enjoyment. As a matter of fact most of my comment was from elements present in the episode you just watched, plus some elements from Episodes 2 and 3. Believe me when I say that there is much more to happen in the next few Episodes, and that this amounts to less than 1% of it.
To everyone feeling anger and rage at Myne and the King in this episode: Take a deep breath, let it out slowly. Done? Good, now realize how awesome the writing is in this episode that made you feel that angry. :) Give credit to the voice actors who are playing their part to the fullest (and probably having a blast at the same time). This is an awesome series that deserves heaps of praise, both for the heroes and the villains being who they are meant to be.
Oh myne gets the justice she deserves the king too as well. When the queen returns she punishes them and publicly humiliated them stripped them off their royal statuses as well

Being able to taste his food is a sign that he is actually beginning to heal. Severe psychological trauma can call people to partially lose senses - lose the ability to taste food or see color or the like - as a product of the damaged mental state. Naofumi is finally beginning - just beginning - to emerge from the state where he is unable to trust anything and anybody. Raphtalia has in a real sense become the only light of hope in his life. He is actually fighting for something instead of against everything.

@@skylerk2516 If you've ever read a story where something awful happens and a character says or thinks that the food tastes like ashes or some such, that's not purely figurative. It's psychosomatic, sure, but when severely depressed your brain just isn't processing any of the stuff you enjoy. Of course, the brain is weird. Depression can make you obsessively seek out simple pleasures like eating to avoid facing your real problems too. And there's all sorts of things that can cause physical damage that can cause you to lose your sense of taste. But in this case, it's pretty plainly Naofumi's mental state causing him to not taste his food.
Ah, that also explain why Naofumi doesn't see Raphtalia growth. The only time Naofumi look at Raphtalia is at the market where he buy her. After that he only see her as a employee or a slave/Servant not as people. Despite that, Raphtalia still grateful to him. but When Raphtalia praise, and vow to be loyal to Naofumi, he begin to trust her as a comrade and friend.
It's more than that. Remember he triggered a precursor to the Curse Series in the first episode after the accusation and sending him away. IMHO that caused him to lose his sense of taste and it tainted his view of everything and everyone around him.

I liked how the shield hero is far more versatile with his equipment. The spear hero has a full party and likely hadn't had to use his weapon to its potential before. Shield on the other hand has to work with all of his options every single day of his life. Even with a 20 lvl difference, he was able to hold his own for quite some time by playing his class far better than the spear hero.
Imagine if he was at an equal level to the spear fucker. That shield will do more then guard,it will be used as a hammer and bash the dudes head against it.
I would be frank, Shieldbro held his grpund so well that Bitch and Trash was *actually afraid* that Spear was gonna lose. With a 20 level difference and a defense-focused weapon. Bitch made one mistake: She forced Shieldbro to grow, struggle, eat dirt time after time; and thus he became the strongest out of the bunch due to his pragmatic mind working with his resources and tapping into potentials the other three idiots couldn't see.
When I watch this episode, I start questioning, how can the best girl 2019 and the worst girl 2019 in the same amine? And why was Myne in the arena the first place
David Ji actually in the light novel Myne was in the crowd, she cheated there, but for whatever reason they decided to put her right in the arena in the anime, which makes no sense at all, why would anyone be IN the arena besides the two who are duelling, but honestly it's not that big of a deal, I mean the anime really did great job at other parts, like unlocking the curse series

Gotta say Mob and Shield Hero are kinda tied imo with Neverland being a close third. I'd say all three have A tier storylines, but each is a master of a different area, with shield hero having the best narrative themes, mob being the best for characterisation, and Neverland being the best for atmosphere (Neverland falls short in my book for having worse quality of themes, while Mob and shield hero are both pretty good with atmosphere and their other trait).
I actually like this Myne character a lot, i mean she's a villain you love to hate. Looking at the perspective of the history, she is a great antagonist.

She doesn't possess the charisma lovable villains possess, a quirky character or gimmick that makes her stand out, mischievous cunninngness, nor a tragic story, motivation or reason for her actions. She just a bitch, through and through, that enjoys making a person's life a living hell, kick him while he's down at every opportunity, and manipulate others into sympathizing with her while villanizing her victim. There's nothing to like here
Well the anime didn't show a couple of scenes and so it may be confusing. 1) Naofumi unlocked the cursed series because of his extreme anger, during this event Naofumi was extremely angry and hatred completely took over him so that he couldn't see anything. The entire world was black and evil in his eyes and he also thought that everyone including Raphtalia were laughing and taking enjoyment in his humilation which fuels his anger even more. This anger is directed to this entire world. This anger and cursed series plays some vital roles during the future arcs. 2) Like chibi mentioned, this event changes how Naofumi views Raphtalia. Before, Raphtalia was only a tool to him but after she becomes his most trusted companion and a close friend. 3) At the end, Naofumi kisses Raphtlalia on the cheek to show that he is grateful to her and he also starts to develop feeling romantically for Raphtalia, although he himself considers it to be parental love because he believes that Raphtalia is mentally a child, which causes Raphtalia to be a little angry at Naofumi from time to time. 4) Raphtalia was actually extremely angry at the spear hero and this was actually one of the very few times when Raphtalia becomes so angry . Unlike Naofumi, Raphtalia is actually much more kind and quite upright so she, sometimes, don't like Naofumi's way of doing things. 5) This event causes doubts in the mind of the sword hero and bow hero as to whether Naofumi actually raped Myne or not. 6) During the time when Naofumi was about to lose himself in anger, Raphtalia said that if you cannot believe anyone who is your slave then let me become your slave which pulls out Naofumi from being consumed by anger. Edit point 7) After this Naofumi no longer keeps balloons with him.
I read the manga too and I was confused that they didn't included point 6 which it would've been the icing on the cake on that scene, Also I legit yelled at the ending "wait! That's it?! Where's the kiss at?!? The manga has it!" I was waiting for both points...and was kinda disappointed but over all I love the episode

And the Web novel has a harem ending with one of the girls being Raphtalia, which i don't like for this kind of anime. Still i highly doubt the Ln will also have a harem ending because they changed quite a bit of things in the Ln from the Wn.

Am in a treat already for being a light novel reader i dont remember anything about the spear user team having a fan user is this forshadowing well spear will flirt with any female.but ya did not knew he have a fan user in his party.
The Spear hero would literally be a Protagonist in another Series. Hell, to him, he's the "Main Hero" with a princess by his side. He's a dummie and he likes glory, but I don't judge him. He even stood against slavery despite it being the norm in the kingdom. Hate him for being on the opposite side of Naofumi, but he's a good guy fighting the wrong battles. Direct the hate on him towards Myne.
The guy is so dumb. He could have used the part when the king forced Naofumi into the duel to leverage an offer to outlaw all slavery. Even if if fails he would have at least tried to make things better.
I never said "fuck you all" as much as I did during this episode. Raphtalia is best girl of the season, maybe the year depending on how good the other female characters are in future seasons. Loving this series so far, looking forward to see how the story and the duo progress.
I'm still shocked by the quality of this adaptation. So much more information is conveyed by the animations and internal monologues, much more than the manga. Well fucking done, I'll keep this studio on the radar from now on
@@portalmanHUN The pacing is not horrible. And honestly, the best fight was the one from the novel, it is a pity that neither of the manga or the anime showed it. Related to the information, both the manga and the anime cut out some things that appear in the novel while adding their own stuff. Sometimes the manga has more "canon" lore, sometimes the anime does, but both are good in my opinion. Due to the ability of anime to include dub and soundtracks, the make a better use of the dramatic moments by making them larger, while the inner monologue in the manga is more present since it is much easier to implement, the anime makes a good use of it too. Each version has its advantages and disadvantages, but taking in account the original source, to me both of them are pretty good. Still, I am enjoying the anime much more thanks to its extra dose of dramatic moments.
Minor spoilers but let me just say this now. None of the other three become any more likable, as far as the manga goes, from here on out. This was ONE of the very FEW moments where the Bow and Sword hero has any sort of human decency, and they actually cut it short in the anime which I'm disappointed by. So allow me to crappily summarize the bits they cut out from this episode. After they call out Myne for cheating and Motoyasu defends her "but the crowd didn't say anything!" Either Bow or Sword says "She's the PRINCESS! Do you think anyone here wants to speak out against the Royal Family?" And he still tries to argue "but he cheated using monsters! And he said he was going to attack my face and crotch!" (FYI in the LN, he actually does for a good while) They argue back "Naofumi literally has no attack power. The only thing he could do was try to humiliate you before you beat him. You were wrong for challenging him in the first place when you knew he didn't stand a chance" I really really wish these few lines were kept in.
I wouldn't be too broken up if they shift a bit from the LN. I haven't read it, but from what I understand, Naofumi creates a harem at the end. I'm honestly sick of harems because it just makes each female lead even less developed to make room for more. Remember "In Another World with my Smartphone"? There were 4 female leads that Touya engages, and they were already underdeveloped before mentioning the 5 OTHER WIVES HE WOULD EVENTUALLY HAVE. I love Naofumi and Raphtalia's relationship and I want to see it grow WITHOUT being diminished by subsequent relationships. I doubt they would stray that far from the source material, but I can only hope.
TBF, Itsuki has White Knight Syndrome, so coming to Nao's aid at the time would make sense. While Ren might not be sociable or as vocal as he would want, he is indeed fair.

Harsh Vardhan in the anime, Motoyasu (spear hero) takes the role of the typical SJW (not done on purpose, just his character thus far). When they remove Raphtalia’s Slave seal, her whole interaction with him there is an inadvertent roast of SJW’s.
This is the best episode so far actually. I'm going to leave alone the main part with the Shield bro and Raccoon Gal development and focus on the rest. Archer Guy and Sword Guy have actually redeemed themselves of only a little with actually admitting that there was interference in the duel with Spear Douche. In the end they actually admitted that Spear douche lost the duel and seemed to have more respect for Shield Bro and possibly starting to believe that he is innocent after seeing some of Princess Bitch and King Fake News's dark side. Although they obviously aren't 100% convinced that Shield Bro isn't a Douche I'm hoping they slowly change over the course of the story to completely believe him and take his side by the end.

@@RENO_K nah, LN/Manga spoilers ahead: The pope is the head of a religion called the cult of the three heroes, which basically views the shield hero as the devil because they tend to have good relationships with the demi's, which have their own kingdom called Siftvelt which had a major war with Melromarc thus making the shield an enemy as far as most of the nobility and papacy of the country is concerned.
The entire series kept me at an edge and kept it going and going. I could taste the anger building up inside me dude. Like no joke I felt this series down to a personal level. The anger that has been in side me and how my GF helped me just by hugging me one time from losing myself. This episode was Perfect.

This series portrays how our real world works nowadays: People with high social/political status always uses their position to stomp those below them. Women are always right most of the time and backed up by the system and whiteknights. False accusation everywhere even without strong evidence brainwashes others. Slavery is a thing but in discrete way. Fame and popularity is more important than real hard work. Everyone will hate you if you're different or labeled as different. Most importantly, Karma will always chase you later.
Don't forget the religions, ppl are blinded by religions. Respect to your religion fine. Attempted or done case extremities by blind religious faith leads to nth but bad shit to themselves and others.
Naofumi was sucked into his own delusions, not really seeing the world as it really was. He hated and rejected the world so much that the world he saw also rejected him. That's why he saw a little Raphtalia abandon him, because he literally couldn't see her because he was stuck in his little world of despair. It's also why he couldn't taste anything either: it's because he's detached himself from the world in order to deal with his pain. He was so blinded by hatred and loneliness that he couldn't see clearly anymore, and food had no flavor because there he held no regard in any way, shape, or form for the world he was in. He's trying to be the bad guy so that he wouldn't be hurt anymore, but he was just digging himself deeper into despair. Raphtalia's words to Naofumi when he was at his lowest are what supports him as he traverses the hole of despair he has made for himself, for he is not out of the woods just yet, but he now values and loves something in the world, and that's what gave him his sight and taste back and keeps him out of the madness of despair he was in for the past few episodes. He enjoys his life because he has found something to love, and not living just so he can keep on hating everything. You can't escape emotions, because they are already there. But, emotions can be controlled, and when channeled correctly, they can be used as a powerful source of great strength.
This anime honestly captures it so well and I curse anybody who wants to shrug is off and bury it under their agendas simply because "it doesnt happen often". Bitch yes it does and now you get to see the real consequences a couple lies can do to someone.

The Curse series is basically the 7 deadly sin, whenever a hero overwhelmed with one of these emotions (Wrath, Gluttony etc...) They unlock the cursed series (Skill tree).. I'm not going to spoil it, but basically it's really bad for the user Naofumi have the Wrath Curse. These emotions take over the heart of the user for example if naofumi gets mad, he stays mad but worst... But if the user overcome these (Completly) They unlock a new skill tree wich is called blessed series... So yeah I would like to time travel just to watch the whole thing in one rush :]

Funny how he is Lv43, acts high and mighty, defeats a boss on wave 1, talks shit abt Naofumi's armor. And he fcking whimpers from a bite of a lv 1 monster that is a BALLOON. You'd think he'd easily brush it off. Get REKTTT, losing to a guy 20 levels below and with 0 lethal offensive capabilities. Other than his sub skill giving him +1 atk.
True, Spear guy has a high level, but he has NO battle experience, just like the other two heroes. They rely purely on blunt force of there magical weapons.
This anime is so good in a different way. The viewer, instead of getting sad, gets angry. One of the few anime that invokes the feeling of *rage* ..unlike something like Angel Beats or Violet Evergarden
Violet Evergarden makes me sad, The Sheild Hero makes me mad, One Punch Man makes me hype, Fooly Cooly makes me happy, Prison School Disgustes me, and Berserk Freightens me.

*Spoilers* My opinion : To be honest, if I were Naofumi I would not have let them get away with just a name change, and I felt like the spear hero should have also gotten some punishment, I know that he is an important aspect to the team, but ignorance and cockiness should have came back to bite him (yes he got his ass wooped by monsters but is that really enough? Because he didn't learn from it, maybe he did later on in the LN but I didn't get that far into the LN yet) If you ask me, I would have taken the offer the queen gave Naofumi "cutting their limps off, make use of their status and pride etc" which shows you how nice Naofumi actually is despite suffering thru so much. Naofumi, best dude ever.
actually i found another manga which the spear hero goes back in time from the future and came back where they have been summoned. and he saved naofumi from myne
@@k_tess I know but it was just a spur of sudden anger, after he calmed down he chose to change their names also, if it was someone else I am sure whether they were calm or not they would have still forced the execution to happen or would have already killed them. Then the queen also had a proposal to flay them or what not, but he didn't go along with it despite having someone suggest that punishment to him as if to encourage him to get his revenge by physically torturing them (I know the queen didn't want that to happen but the tone of how she made this offer seemed like she was encouraging it). But he didn't go along with it which is very difficult to do for a lot of people. So Naofumi is still a good man, plus he is protecting the raccoon unlike the rest of the Internet. Sorry for making this reply so long, but I just wanted to make it clear how I view things.
Actually as far as I remember shield, sword, & bow heroes got less rewards than Spear Hero because of the duel debacle & favoritism. Yeah The king is getting more trashy & trashy.
This episode also tells you all you need to know about Motoyasu's character. He is a dense, skirt-chasing asshole that has no sense of fair-play, a very sore loser and all too willing to play the part of a hero, but has no heroic qualities. He is much more interested in appearing, rather then being.

He is being heavily manipulated and blinded by not only Myne, but others as well. He is overconfident, as all young people with a chip on their shoulders are, and is playing the "Role" of a great hero. At some point for all of us, our view of a hero was the same as him. Despite all this, he is still at heart, someone who cares about right and good. He simply is not experienced enough to be able to recognize that he is being used. Again, something that the vast majority of us have experienced at some point.

The issue with the food and naofumi reminds me of Mai Natsume from the Blazblue Series... She has "super taste" that allows her to taste the intentions of who cooked the food, so everything tasted bad, except for Noel Vermillion's food, which was that kind of super bad food that even gets censored and everyone hates... but mai loves it, because she tastes the love in that food. This is similar with naofumi feeling that anything tasted like nothing, but when raphtalia made him food, it tasted something, because it was made with the love and care of raphtalia
Raphtalia is best girl this episode for comforting Naofumi. No matter who believes him, Raphtalia will always trust Naofumi. Them being the sword and the shield is a great way to summarize the relationship that they'll always trust each other no matter what. Can't believe spear hero has his own spin-off, but that's a whole other story. To see the discrimination in full effect again is why I'm passionate for Shield hero's justice. Makes me feel it should start anytime soon, but I can wait. But over all, F** the king, F** the royals, and F** B**th (Myne).

Thing is, this kind of treatment existed in Medieval Times, so it applies perfectly to this plot line. It’s so hard not to read up spoilers on this series, but I’m only reading the manga that the anime has covered, and the manga adds that extra bit of detail that the anime skips out on, which is often very character driven moments. The ending on this arc that was in the manga was slightly more rewarding to see, but the anime does a great job keeping the major bits in there, especially considering how fast it moves.
The second half of the episode was a rollercoaster of emotions, even when i have read many times the LN and specially volume 1 which is my favourite, this moment is still pretty heavy, the anime did a great job showing the mental struggle of naofumi after unfairly losing the duel, and more with his point of view, how he sees the world, and i must say the little details on his depression and pessimistic attitude after being framed really have a good impact, as how we see he lost any sense of taste, which comes as how he is stressed out as fuck, and raphtalia conveying her feelings, acceptance and understanding of him really hit deep, since as how she returns some light into him, it makes him believe in someone and how it is conveyed with him regaining said sense of taste is just great, which is something i love in any show, a good charactherization, and naofumi truly has a good one thanks to the framing, which converts him into something else different from any kind of MC from novels, where he is not a goody 2 shoes neither an emissary of revenge or a laid back op characther, and one can see it in how varied his emotions turn and how stuff affects him in the short and long run, he is one of my favs characthers due to this

I rewatched his episode multiple times, and can’t stop crying at the part where speaks to him. I keep even hearing “And I believe in The Great Shield Hero.” If not exact, it’s what I keep hearing. Then his cries...Raphtalia really breaks through to him.
Yes. Ainz would be perfect for this situation and to help naofumi even more, he'll ask him and raphtalia to be his subordinates so they won't get treated like the way he did again
sooo, a bit more spoilers, or more like clarifications since the first time Naofumi got thrown down, he became cursed, quite literally, at that point he had almost unlocked the cursed series, but not all requirements were yet met (I think it was level mostly and after that was met another spark of rage), yet, he was already cursed by it, this curse is a higher phisical manifestation and perpetually on, of the sin the curse series released (this is the spoiler part) in this case, the Shield Of Wrath, the curse itself makes him perpetially angry, clouded his vision so he could only see certain things, like only being able to see Raphtalia as a child, muffled his hearing to those that speaked good things to him and better hear those bad mouthing him, so yes, he did clearly heard the nobles murmurs, and denied him of the ability to taste anything at all, basically denying anything that could bring even a little joy to help aliviate his rage and, while Raphtalia has mostly cured this curse from Naofumi, its not compleatly gone, but the most phisical aspects of it are gone
I think i know why the Spear Hero and the other two are so easily manipulated by the Bitch Princess. In the first episode we see that the three other heroes were far more into MMOs than Naofumi, and soon we will see that they really act like they're in a big MMO, a MMORPG where they are the only players and all the other ones are NPCs(true NPCs, not the SJWs complaining about this anime). On a MMO you don't expect that the NPCs would betray you or be mischievous(this is far more common in single-player RPGs), especially if you judged them as "good people". Another factor that proves this is that they went directly to the boss during the "raid" instead of protecting the nearest civilians, cuz they were focused on what they would do if they were in a MMO(and it's not like you would care for the lives of NPCs), they're not used to it because of the way they see this world. I'm in no way trying to justify their actions(cuz they're weebs). They are wrong, but the only one telling'em the truth is the guy who they think to be something comparable to a Player Killer. Put this plus a corrupt king and princess and you have 3 dorks easily manipulated . I'm glad Raphtalia & Naofumi's relationship grew more towards the end of the episode! 😭😊 Seeing Naofumi fight so hard to protect and save Raphtalia from being taken away due to her not being suitable to be by Naofumi's side was so sad to see yet so courageous of him to do. 😌🙌🏽

Yeah, while Spear has problems with his naivety and females, The bow and Sword hero has their own problems. Bow has a skewed sense of Justice and is still a kid at heart who likes playing the Secret Hero Sword is a solo player that doesn't ever think of the consequences of his actions.
From a manga main point of view the anime felt rushed in some areas but from this episode I found that they are focusing on the aspect of naofumi's view of the world. I hope they keep it up. Plus that pope tease though😎
This episode was another great adaptation. I'm glad anime onlys now knows why Manga and Light Novel readers hated Myne. She and her father the king have been planning to ruin Naofumi since the beginning. As for Motoyatsu(spear hero) he actually isn't a terrible person he's just super dense. Fun fact: Motoyatsu has his own light novel series called Reprise of the Spear Hero. I haven't read it yet but I can tell it'll give insight to who Motoyatsu is as a person. I also like how the anime depicts Naofumi's despair turned to wrath. I can't wait to see a certain part of the series animated, manga and light novel readers know what I'm talking about. Lastly the title of episode 5 has me super excited. I can't wait for episode 5. Great episode. This series has been really good so far and I can't wait to see where it ends up by the end.
Motoyasu in Reprise is not only dense and happy-go-lucky, but he's also a murder machine with selective memory. only remembering Firo and the fact that it was Naofumi who hatched her. Anything else besides that (except for his game knowledge) is forgotten, so he will defend Naofumi even if it means he would kill those who would try to hurt him.
The spin off take place praticaly at the end of the main serie. Iwatani have realise about B*tch and no longer belive a women, he obtain a power to manipulate the time and desapear from the main serie because of that. The spin of is what he do between the moment he use this power and the moment when he retourn to the main series. He return to a copie of the main serie but in the firts episode with every memories so he protect Naofumi this time. But he's quite excessif man so apart Naofumi and some other character I don't spoil here he doesn't care so he say easy he can destroy the entire humanity for Naofumi if he want to.
I think it's a little bit sad that shield hero doesn't give best girl a little kiss on the cheek in the anime,because he did it in the manga Despite that,the anime adaptation is absolutely killing it!
That is because the anime goes off of the Wb/Light Novel source material where that never happened, while the Manga alters events and has instances of the characters being out of character. Naofumi was not of the mindset to give Raphtalia a kiss on the cheek at the time because that denotes romantic affection which he is incapable of at the time.

Raphtalia in this episode was amazing. Take note Hollywood. This is how you have a strong female character being traditionally feminine. Most of these woke (usually male feminist type) writers don't know how to do that trope anymore. Or do they think femininity is weak? Raphtalia was nurturing, empathetic, genuine and saved our hero from himself.

No he wasn't being a hypocrite, he wasn't even thinking on punishing the Shield hero for that. Te reason why he did it was because of the Spear Hero's reaction. Like Naofumi said, slavery is not forbidden in Melronarc. Not only that Demi-humans have close to no rights whatsoever. Not a single one of the royals or nobles think that it's wrong to own a demi-human slave. Still, if it's going to punish the Shield hero, they will definitely change their minds. It wasn't shown yet, but the main religion in this country only aknowledges 3 of the heroes. According to their holy scriptures the shield hero is not a hero but a demon. This is the main reason why everyone always try to sabotage the Shield hero.

Believe me when I say that there is much more to happen in the next few Episodes, and that this amounts to less than 1% of it.
To everyone feeling anger and rage at Myne and the King in this episode: Take a deep breath, let it out slowly. Done? Good, now realize how awesome the writing is in this episode that made you feel that angry. :) Give credit to the voice actors who are playing their part to the fullest (and probably having a blast at the same time). This is an awesome series that deserves heaps of praise, both for the heroes and the villains being who they are meant to be.

Being able to taste his food is a sign that he is actually beginning to heal. Severe psychological trauma can call people to partially lose senses - lose the ability to taste food or see color or the like - as a product of the damaged mental state. Naofumi is finally beginning - just beginning - to emerge from the state where he is unable to trust anything and anybody. Raphtalia has in a real sense become the only light of hope in his life. He is actually fighting for something instead of against everything.

@@skylerk2516 If you've ever read a story where something awful happens and a character says or thinks that the food tastes like ashes or some such, that's not purely figurative. It's psychosomatic, sure, but when severely depressed your brain just isn't processing any of the stuff you enjoy.
Of course, the brain is weird. Depression can make you obsessively seek out simple pleasures like eating to avoid facing your real problems too. And there's all sorts of things that can cause physical damage that can cause you to lose your sense of taste. But in this case, it's pretty plainly Naofumi's mental state causing him to not taste his food.
Ah, that also explain why Naofumi doesn't see Raphtalia growth.
The only time Naofumi look at Raphtalia is at the market where he buy her. After that he only see her as a employee or a slave/Servant not as people.
Despite that, Raphtalia still grateful to him.
but When Raphtalia praise, and vow to be loyal to Naofumi, he begin to trust her as a comrade and friend.
It's more than that. Remember he triggered a precursor to the Curse Series in the first episode after the accusation and sending him away. IMHO that caused him to lose his sense of taste and it tainted his view of everything and everyone around him.

I liked how the shield hero is far more versatile with his equipment. The spear hero has a full party and likely hadn't had to use his weapon to its potential before. Shield on the other hand has to work with all of his options every single day of his life. Even with a 20 lvl difference, he was able to hold his own for quite some time by playing his class far better than the spear hero.
Imagine if he was at an equal level to the spear fucker. That shield will do more then guard,it will be used as a hammer and bash the dudes head against it.
I would be frank, Shieldbro held his grpund so well that Bitch and Trash was *actually afraid* that Spear was gonna lose.
With a 20 level difference and a defense-focused weapon.
Bitch made one mistake: She forced Shieldbro to grow, struggle, eat dirt time after time; and thus he became the strongest out of the bunch due to his pragmatic mind working with his resources and tapping into potentials the other three idiots couldn't see.

Gotta say Mob and Shield Hero are kinda tied imo with Neverland being a close third. I'd say all three have A tier storylines, but each is a master of a different area, with shield hero having the best narrative themes, mob being the best for characterisation, and Neverland being the best for atmosphere (Neverland falls short in my book for having worse quality of themes, while Mob and shield hero are both pretty good with atmosphere and their other trait).

Well the anime didn't show a couple of scenes and so it may be confusing.
1) Naofumi unlocked the cursed series because of his extreme anger, during this event Naofumi was extremely angry and hatred completely took over him so that he couldn't see anything. The entire world was black and evil in his eyes and he also thought that everyone including Raphtalia were laughing and taking enjoyment in his humilation which fuels his anger even more. This anger is directed to this entire world. This anger and cursed series plays some vital roles during the future arcs.
2) Like chibi mentioned, this event changes how Naofumi views Raphtalia. Before, Raphtalia was only a tool to him but after she becomes his most trusted companion and a close friend.
3) At the end, Naofumi kisses Raphtlalia on the cheek to show that he is grateful to her and he also starts to develop feeling romantically for Raphtalia, although he himself considers it to be parental love because he believes that Raphtalia is mentally a child, which causes Raphtalia to be a little angry at Naofumi from time to time.
4) Raphtalia was actually extremely angry at the spear hero and this was actually one of the very few times when Raphtalia becomes so angry . Unlike Naofumi, Raphtalia is actually much more kind and quite upright so she, sometimes, don't like Naofumi's way of doing things.
5) This event causes doubts in the mind of the sword hero and bow hero as to whether Naofumi actually raped Myne or not.
6) During the time when Naofumi was about to lose himself in anger, Raphtalia said that if you cannot believe anyone who is your slave then let me become your slave which pulls out Naofumi from being consumed by anger.
Edit point 7) After this Naofumi no longer keeps balloons with him.
I read the manga too and I was confused that they didn't included point 6 which it would've been the icing on the cake on that scene,
Also I legit yelled at the ending "wait! That's it?! Where's the kiss at?!? The manga has it!"
I was waiting for both points...and was kinda disappointed but over all I love the episode

The Spear hero would literally be a Protagonist in another Series. Hell, to him, he's the "Main Hero" with a princess by his side. He's a dummie and he likes glory, but I don't judge him. He even stood against slavery despite it being the norm in the kingdom.
Hate him for being on the opposite side of Naofumi, but he's a good guy fighting the wrong battles. Direct the hate on him towards Myne.

@@portalmanHUN The pacing is not horrible. And honestly, the best fight was the one from the novel, it is a pity that neither of the manga or the anime showed it. Related to the information, both the manga and the anime cut out some things that appear in the novel while adding their own stuff. Sometimes the manga has more "canon" lore, sometimes the anime does, but both are good in my opinion. Due to the ability of anime to include dub and soundtracks, the make a better use of the dramatic moments by making them larger, while the inner monologue in the manga is more present since it is much easier to implement, the anime makes a good use of it too.
Each version has its advantages and disadvantages, but taking in account the original source, to me both of them are pretty good. Still, I am enjoying the anime much more thanks to its extra dose of dramatic moments.
Minor spoilers but let me just say this now. None of the other three become any more likable, as far as the manga goes, from here on out.
This was ONE of the very FEW moments where the Bow and Sword hero has any sort of human decency, and they actually cut it short in the anime which I'm disappointed by. So allow me to crappily summarize the bits they cut out from this episode.
After they call out Myne for cheating and Motoyasu defends her "but the crowd didn't say anything!" Either Bow or Sword says "She's the PRINCESS! Do you think anyone here wants to speak out against the Royal Family?"
And he still tries to argue "but he cheated using monsters! And he said he was going to attack my face and crotch!" (FYI in the LN, he actually does for a good while)
They argue back "Naofumi literally has no attack power. The only thing he could do was try to humiliate you before you beat him. You were wrong for challenging him in the first place when you knew he didn't stand a chance"
I really really wish these few lines were kept in.
I wouldn't be too broken up if they shift a bit from the LN. I haven't read it, but from what I understand, Naofumi creates a harem at the end. I'm honestly sick of harems because it just makes each female lead even less developed to make room for more. Remember "In Another World with my Smartphone"? There were 4 female leads that Touya engages, and they were already underdeveloped before mentioning the 5 OTHER WIVES HE WOULD EVENTUALLY HAVE. I love Naofumi and Raphtalia's relationship and I want to see it grow WITHOUT being diminished by subsequent relationships. I doubt they would stray that far from the source material, but I can only hope.
TBF, Itsuki has White Knight Syndrome, so coming to Nao's aid at the time would make sense. While Ren might not be sociable or as vocal as he would want, he is indeed fair.

And Naofumi still quite loyal toward Raphtalia. He really have a harem after the end of the series in the epilogue when we see what become every character so we know he marry 3 girls if I remember. Well if I can rasure you, Filo is not inclued

This is the best episode so far actually. I'm going to leave alone the main part with the Shield bro and Raccoon Gal development and focus on the rest. Archer Guy and Sword Guy have actually redeemed themselves of only a little with actually admitting that there was interference in the duel with Spear Douche. In the end they actually admitted that Spear douche lost the duel and seemed to have more respect for Shield Bro and possibly starting to believe that he is innocent after seeing some of Princess Bitch and King Fake News's dark side. Although they obviously aren't 100% convinced that Shield Bro isn't a Douche I'm hoping they slowly change over the course of the story to completely believe him and take his side by the end.

Naofumi was sucked into his own delusions, not really seeing the world as it really was. He hated and rejected the world so much that the world he saw also rejected him. That's why he saw a little Raphtalia abandon him, because he literally couldn't see her because he was stuck in his little world of despair. It's also why he couldn't taste anything either: it's because he's detached himself from the world in order to deal with his pain.
He was so blinded by hatred and loneliness that he couldn't see clearly anymore, and food had no flavor because there he held no regard in any way, shape, or form for the world he was in. He's trying to be the bad guy so that he wouldn't be hurt anymore, but he was just digging himself deeper into despair.
Raphtalia's words to Naofumi when he was at his lowest are what supports him as he traverses the hole of despair he has made for himself, for he is not out of the woods just yet, but he now values and loves something in the world, and that's what gave him his sight and taste back and keeps him out of the madness of despair he was in for the past few episodes. He enjoys his life because he has found something to love, and not living just so he can keep on hating everything.
You can't escape emotions, because they are already there. But, emotions can be controlled, and when channeled correctly, they can be used as a powerful source of great strength.

To be honest, if I were Naofumi I would not have let them get away with just a name change, and I felt like the spear hero should have also gotten some punishment, I know that he is an important aspect to the team, but ignorance and cockiness should have came back to bite him (yes he got his ass wooped by monsters but is that really enough? Because he didn't learn from it, maybe he did later on in the LN but I didn't get that far into the LN yet) If you ask me, I would have taken the offer the queen gave Naofumi "cutting their limps off, make use of their status and pride etc" which shows you how nice Naofumi actually is despite suffering thru so much. Naofumi, best dude ever.

@@k_tess I know but it was just a spur of sudden anger, after he calmed down he chose to change their names also, if it was someone else I am sure whether they were calm or not they would have still forced the execution to happen or would have already killed them. Then the queen also had a proposal to flay them or what not, but he didn't go along with it despite having someone suggest that punishment to him as if to encourage him to get his revenge by physically torturing them (I know the queen didn't want that to happen but the tone of how she made this offer seemed like she was encouraging it). But he didn't go along with it which is very difficult to do for a lot of people. So Naofumi is still a good man, plus he is protecting the raccoon unlike the rest of the Internet. He is being heavily manipulated and blinded by not only Myne, but others as well. Despite all this, he is still at heart, someone who cares about right and good. He simply is not experienced enough to be able to recognize that he is being used. The issue with the food and naofumi reminds me of Mai Natsume from the Blazblue Series... She has "super taste" that allows her to taste the intentions of who cooked the food, so everything tasted bad, except for Noel Vermillion's food, which was that kind of super bad food that even gets censored and everyone hates... but mai loves it, because she tastes the love in that food.
This is similar with naofumi feeling that anything tasted like nothing, but when raphtalia made him food, it tasted something, because it was made with the love and care of raphtalia

Raphtalia is best girl this episode for comforting Naofumi. No matter who believes him, Raphtalia will always trust Naofumi. Them being the sword and the shield is a great way to summarize the relationship that they'll always trust each other no matter what. Can't believe spear hero has his own spin-off, but that's a whole other story. To see the discrimination in full effect again is why I'm passionate for Shield hero's justice. Makes me feel it should start anytime soon, but I can wait. But over all, F** the king, F** the royals, and F** B**th (Myne).

Thing is, this kind of treatment existed in Medieval Times, so it applies perfectly to this plot line.
It’s so hard not to read up spoilers on this series, but I’m only reading the manga that the anime has covered, and the manga adds that extra bit of detail that the anime skips out on, which is often very character driven moments.
The ending on this arc that was in the manga was slightly more rewarding to see, but the anime does a great job keeping the major bits in there, especially considering how fast it moves.
The second half of the episode was a rollercoaster of emotions, even when i have read many times the LN and specially volume 1 which is my favourite, this moment is still pretty heavy, the anime did a great job showing the mental struggle of naofumi after unfairly losing the duel, and more with his point of view, how he sees the world, and i must say the little details on his depression and pessimistic attitude after being framed really have a good impact, as how we see he lost any sense of taste, which comes as how he is stressed out as fuck, and raphtalia conveying her feelings, acceptance and understanding of him really hit deep, since as how she returns some light into him, it makes him believe in someone and how it is conveyed with him regaining said sense of taste is just great, which is something i love in any show, a good charactherization, and naofumi truly has a good one thanks to the framing, which converts him into something else different from any kind of MC from novels, where he is not a goody 2 shoes neither an emissary of revenge or a laid back op characther, and one can see it in how varied his emotions turn and how stuff affects him in the short and long run, he is one of my favs characthers due to this

@@danielantony1882 nah, he is not exactly op, he gets stronger, but never op, r rather he cant, since as you saw, he can only use the shield, and the shield doesnt allow him to increase his attack, he is in a world where strenght and attack are 2 separate stats, so he has lots of str but low atk, he is clever in how to use the shield and the skills but thats all that amounts to, he can and only is allowed to protect, nothing more nothing else

sooo, a bit more spoilers, or more like clarifications
since the first time Naofumi got thrown down, he became cursed, quite literally, at that point he had almost unlocked the cursed series, but not all requirements were yet met (I think it was level mostly and after that was met another spark of rage), yet, he was already cursed by it, this curse is a higher phisical manifestation and perpetually on, of the sin the curse series released (this is the spoiler part) in this case, the Shield Of Wrath, the curse itself makes him perpetially angry, clouded his vision so he could only see certain things, like only being able to see Raphtalia as a child, muffled his hearing to those that speaked good things to him and better hear those bad mouthing him, so yes, he did clearly heard the nobles murmurs, and denied him of the ability to taste anything at all, basically denying anything that could bring even a little joy to help aliviate his rage
and, while Raphtalia has mostly cured this curse from Naofumi, its not compleatly gone, but the most phisical aspects of it are gone

I think i know why the Spear Hero and the other two are so easily manipulated by the Bitch Princess. In the first episode we see that the three other heroes were far more into MMOs than Naofumi, and soon we will see that they really act like they're in a big MMO, a MMORPG where they are the only players and all the other ones are NPCs(true NPCs, not the SJWs complaining about this anime). On a MMO you don't expect that the NPCs would betray you or be mischievous(this is far more common in single-player RPGs), especially if you judged them as "good people". Another factor that proves this is that they went directly to the boss during the "raid" instead of protecting the nearest civilians, cuz they were focused on what they would do if they were in a MMO(and it's not like you would care for the lives of NPCs), they're not used to it because of the way they see this world.
I'm in no way trying to justify their actions(cuz they're weebs). They are wrong, but the only one telling'em the truth is the guy who they think to be something comparable to a Player Killer. Put this plus a corrupt king and princess and you have 3 dorks easily manipulated

I'm glad Raphtalia & Naofumi's relationship grew more towards the end of the episode! 😭😊 Seeing Naofumi fight so hard to protect and save Raphtalia from being taken away due to her not being suitable to be by Naofumi's side was so sad to see yet so courageous of him to do. 😌🙌🏽

From a manga main point of view the anime felt rushed in some areas but from this episode I found that they are focusing on the aspect of naofumi's view of the world.
I hope they keep it up.

This episode was another great adaptation. I'm glad anime onlys now knows why Manga and Light Novel readers hated Myne. She and her father the king have been planning to ruin Naofumi since the beginning. As for Motoyatsu(spear hero) he actually isn't a terrible person he's just super dense. Fun fact: Motoyatsu has his own light novel series called Reprise of the Spear Hero. I haven't read it yet but I can tell it'll give insight to who Motoyatsu is as a person. I also like how the anime depicts Naofumi's despair turned to wrath. I can't wait to see a certain part of the series animated, manga and light novel readers know what I'm talking about. Lastly the title of episode 5 has me super excited. I can't wait for episode 5. Great episode. This series has been really good so far and I can't wait to see where it ends up by the end.
Motoyasu in Reprise is not only dense and happy-go-lucky, but he's also a murder machine with selective memory. only remembering Firo and the fact that it was Naofumi who hatched her. Anything else besides that (except for his game knowledge) is forgotten, so he will defend Naofumi even if it means he would kill those who would try to hurt him.

Iwatani have realise about B*tch and no longer belive a women, he obtain a power to manipulate the time and desapear from the main serie because of that.
The spin of is what he do between the moment he use this power and the moment when he retourn to the main series.
He return to a copie of the main serie but in the firts episode with every memories so he protect Naofumi this time.
But he's quite excessif man so apart Naofumi and some other character I don't spoil here he doesn't care so he say easy he can destroy the entire humanity for Naofumi if he want to.

That is because the anime goes off of the Wb/Light Novel source material where that never happened, while the Manga alters events and has instances of the characters being out of character.
Naofumi was not of the mindset to give Raphtalia a kiss on the cheek at the time because that denotes romantic affection which he is incapable of at the time.
