Ralph’s broken heart aside. Ever since Naofumi adopted/bought her at an early age, he’s done nothing but look after her. Making her stronger. Feeding her. Teaching her how to survive. Caring for her illness. It makes sense that he’d start to see her as his own child. He even keeps her future in mind since he’ll have to make sure she’s strong enough to survive on her own when he eventually goes back to his world.

He was there when she wet the bed (it was in the montage from episode 3, she was crying). He practically raised her for Christ's sake, from broken and scared to a confident ad competent young woman. Now, can Raphtalia change the way Naofumi sees her? Perhaps, but that would be a radical change and would thus require a radical event. And I assume it would have to take place after longer than what? A few months since she was a little girl? Give it a few years at least. I for one enjoy the surrogate father-daughter relationship here. It's not something that's commonly explored in anime, or any other media for that matter. The primary focus is most often male-female romantic relationships, which are great, but I think we can afford to explore other relationship dynamics.

Fun thought: in the sense of the world having elements of traditional RPG games, Naofumi is one of those guys that plays the game everyday slowly but surely grinding, getting stronger, and making a name for himself. While the other heroes would be guys who spend some money to progress faster than others (not that I’m it’s a bad thing) just the others have a head start while Naofumi is dedicated to get stronger which is just cool to think about.
Its less f2p/p2p and the progression that is inherent to the medium that each hero entered from. The other three are gamers that have platueing progression and are stat based while naofumi's progression is at novel pace. MINOR SPOILER WARING AHEAD: Because he is novel based and not mmo he can see the consequences of the actions of himself and that of the other hero's who assume its like an mmo where completing the quest is all that matter.
Yeah in this world high level doesn't equal to skill, in the future the queen would give them training through mentors and they're low level, sword hero got his ass kicked by the low level sword teacher
Well... I don't see it as a F2P/P2W scenario, it's more a full on F2P in this scenario. But, the shield hero play alone while the other three have a lot of people rushing them. The shield hero learn everything about the world, how to get the better deals, how to find items and materials and learn a lot about himself and his skills while the other three just rush and learn only the basics. In this kind of scenario, who do you think will end the strongest and by far?
Angello LamTafur I actually consider the animation pretty meh. Very stale most of the time with occasional awkward movements and positions, while there are moments where the expressions do not match the tone of voice (like shouting gladly but standing still with an apathetic look). The special effects are neat and above average, but the animation itself is nothing to brag home about.
Yeah....but...... Raphtalia won't always be in the daughterzone. She'll eventually be in the wifezone with several other girls(including Bitch's sister).
We are yet to see him in full Dad mode. Seriously, he cooks for them, he plays fetch with the pets, he does home improvements, he teaches everyone to be self sufficient before sending them out in the world, even puts up with people ringing the doorbell and running off.

Plot twist: Filo actually becomes the main damage dealer of the group later on, with Raph becoming something more akin to a "rogue-like" fighter, with stealth and surprise attacks xD

Ahead on the story, the three take a new dynamic where Raph hides with her magic at the start of fights (because she has Illusion-based spells) to wait for an opening, while Naofumi and Filo make the front battle, basically acting like the distraction. At least, is like that up until the point I reached.
Encase you didn't notice Naofumi was hiding the fact that he is the Shield Hero by having his shield transformed into its book form. He is gaining fame as a merchant and crafter.

A Nue has the head of a baboon the body of a tiger and a snake for a tail. A Chimaera has a goat and lion head a lion body and a snake tail. She's a master of all trades... except intelligence. She can fulfill most roles, though she does most often play the part of DPS, crowd control and transport. Raphtalia on the other hand... her fighting style is developed around the fact that Naofumi is always there to protect her so she's pure offense.

As how i heard about it, Naufumi is a Resource Management game otaku. That is why he has least skill in pvp RPGs. He played RPGs but as i hear its turnbase games. Maybe that is why he is so good at producing income. And that is why he has no idea about 1v1 rpgs.

mabye it sucks life energy out of people/plants as it grows and the stopping hunger is just to feed the seed and you can't die of hunger if you die of sickness first :D

This episode is like a literal game quest, naofumi had to do all these task in order to get the outfit for filo ps. Filo is more adorable than raph. *Fight me.*
Next episode is definitely going to be about the village that the spear hero planted the seed that overgrows with too much food, and possibly correcting all of the other heroes' mistakes like killing a dragon and letting it turn in to a skeleton dragon which then corrupts everything around it, and toppling corrupt governments without replacing them with anything good.

I personally like the father and daughter relationship in this show because its not often a concept done as well as it was in episode 2, at least for an anime. I found myself being reminded of Kenpachi and Yachiru from bleach when watching Naofumi and young Raphtalia on their adventures.
Naofumi better make all of his products references to his world. A more efficient farming tool? ‘Hoe b gone’ An alarm clock? Make the default alarm be ‘ZA WORDO’. The possibilities are endless.
I think he loves her but doesn’t want it to get in the way. He makes it very direct she’s like a daughter to remind her theirs no romanticizing this. Same as filo he treats her like a child and like a daughter but very directly states what she is a slave. It’s to avoid being nice. He is good hearted but he believes that good heart betrayed him and made him weak. Same as what the slave merchant said where he could have chosen the strongest slave but he chose the one close to death because he either knows he gain loyalty or he’s trying to save somebody. He hates being viewed as a evil villain but he plays the part because it gets shit done which he wants to go home away from this world

The scene where the seamstress presented Filo's new dress showed not only her passion for her craft and how much she loved making a cute dress for a cute girl... It was even more powerful because of the eyebags. She was exhausted, and enthusiastic. This, is a tradeswoman who's poured a LOT of effort into something, and feels proud that it paid off (be it money, or simply that the end result was as good as or better than she'd expected it to be). This is not random merchant number X but, in this short a scene, we have a decently fledged character with a personality, a struggle and a sense of accomplishment presented to us in just a few moments.
The Gem Craft is something that becomes relevant later but wasn't explained much in the Manga. I'm happy they gave it an origin. Expect the Seed and Dragon plot threads to be relevant soon.

I like the realistic goals Naofumi has in this episode and the justification he has for helping people since he's well aware of his reputation so people will actually accept his help if they know he's doing it for money / goods and services.
I totally forgot how amazing the coming episodes will be. With the segment where they spoke about the other heros achievements, that'll lead to our MC's future ventures
I honestly don't know how the ship with raphtalia and naofumi came to be. From the beginning I never even considered shipping these two until this review. I literally didn't think anything when naofumi said he view raphtalia as a daughter, I always thought that from the beginning. What a surprise well sorry for those that shipped these two.
raph is the rouge (high damage single target mele), filo is the dark mage (high damage all ranges aoe), and naof is the paladin (tank/support high utility high survivability); now all they need is either a druidic ranger (high damage support) or a second paladin and they can take on the raid boss
This episode went all in with the video game references. First they spent the majority of the episode on an MMO style fetch quest including multiple tasks to complete the objective. Then they take the Nue boss battle from Nioh, complete with the electric attacks, and finish it off by having Filo deliver a true Mortal Kombat X-ray attack at the end. Haven't seen this many game references since the Gamers anime.

We are yet to see him in full Dad mode. Seriously, he cooks for them, he plays fetch with the pets, he does home improvements, he teaches everyone to be self sufficient before sending them out in the world, even puts up with people ringing the doorbell and running off.

i love the way the story ties in the relationships that Naofumi is creating with all the merchants/shop owners. helps make everything feel balanced as an adventure show
Plot twist: Filo actually becomes the main damage dealer of the group later on, with Raph becoming something more akin to a "rogue-like" fighter, with stealth and surprise attacks xD

Ahead on the story, the three take a new dynamic where Raph hides with her magic at the start of fights (because she has Illusion-based spells) to wait for an opening, while Naofumi and Filo make the front battle, basically acting like the distraction. At least, is like that up until the point I reached.

Encase you didn't notice Naofumi was hiding the fact that he is the Shield Hero by having his shield transformed into its book form. He is gaining fame as a merchant and crafter.

It's actually the other way around... especially later on. Naofumi is the shield, Raphtalia is the sword, tis one of the truths of the world.

She's a master of all trades... except intelligence. She can fulfill most roles, though she does most often play the part of DPS, crowd control and transport.
Raphtalia on the other hand... her fighting style is developed around the fact that Naofumi is always there to protect her so she's pure offense.

As how i heard about it, Naufumi is a Resource Management game otaku. That is why he has least skill in pvp RPGs. He played RPGs but as i hear its turnbase games. Maybe that is why he is so good at producing income. And that is why he has no idea about 1v1 rpgs.

Next episode is definitely going to be about the village that the spear hero planted the seed that overgrows with too much food, and possibly correcting all of the other heroes' mistakes like killing a dragon and letting it turn in to a skeleton dragon which then corrupts everything around it, and toppling corrupt governments without replacing them with anything good.

I personally like the father and daughter relationship in this show because its not often a concept done as well as it was in episode 2, at least for an anime. I found myself being reminded of Kenpachi and Yachiru from bleach when watching Naofumi and young Raphtalia on their adventures.
Naofumi better make all of his products references to his world. A more efficient farming tool? ‘Hoe b gone’ An alarm clock? Make the default alarm be ‘ZA WORDO’. The possibilities are endless.

I think he loves her but doesn’t want it to get in the way. He makes it very direct she’s like a daughter to remind her theirs no romanticizing this. Same as filo he treats her like a child and like a daughter but very directly states what she is a slave. It’s to avoid being nice. He is good hearted but he believes that good heart betrayed him and made him weak. Same as what the slave merchant said where he could have chosen the strongest slave but he chose the one close to death because he either knows he gain loyalty or he’s trying to save somebody. He hates being viewed as a evil villain but he plays the part because it gets shit done which he wants to go home away from this world

It was even more powerful because of the eyebags. She was exhausted, and enthusiastic. This, is a tradeswoman who's poured a LOT of effort into something, and feels proud that it paid off (be it money, or simply that the end result was as good as or better than she'd expected it to be).
This is not random merchant number X but, in this short a scene, we have a decently fledged character with a personality, a struggle and a sense of accomplishment presented to us in just a few moments.

I like the realistic goals Naofumi has in this episode and the justification he has for helping people since he's well aware of his reputation so people will actually accept his help if they know he's doing it for money / goods and services.
I totally forgot how amazing the coming episodes will be. With the segment where they spoke about the other heros achievements, that'll lead to our MC's future ventures
I honestly don't know how the ship with raphtalia and naofumi came to be. From the beginning I never even considered shipping these two until this review. I literally didn't think anything when naofumi said he view raphtalia as a daughter, I always thought that from the beginning. What a surprise well sorry for those that shipped these two.

raph is the rouge (high damage single target mele), filo is the dark mage (high damage all ranges aoe), and naof is the paladin (tank/support high utility high survivability); now all they need is either a druidic ranger (high damage support) or a second paladin and they can take on the raid boss
This episode went all in with the video game references. First they spent the majority of the episode on an MMO style fetch quest including multiple tasks to complete the objective. Then they take the Nue boss battle from Nioh, complete with the electric attacks, and finish it off by having Filo deliver a true Mortal Kombat X-ray attack at the end. Haven't seen this many game references since the Gamers anime.
