That scene (as anime only) made me very very upset for a few minutes.
even if naofumi and raph flee she still would've beaten the goddamn dragon.
It was even funnier in the manga, since filo wanted to eat the corpse from the very beginning and when they defeat it, she ends up eating it as a way of disposing it
Inadover granted it makes more sense this way since the anime didn’t really show them disposing the dragon’s corpse.

he is literally a trope called the "almighty janitor" which refers to a character that is low in rank but at the top in terms of what they can accomplish. Examples of it being goku(low class warrior yet strongest in the series) touma kamijou(lvl 0 esper but with ability that makes all high level esper powers meaningless) saitama( C class hero, yet seemingly limitless power) etc.

The Curse is more of a debuff than a serious issue, get some High Purity Holy Water like the Doctor said, she'll be fine. The important part of this episode is Naofumi's reliance on the Curse Series degrading his humanity, it's his best offensive Skill, but he sacrifices his Humanity in using it. The Curse Series is a Evil Power that isn't supposed to be used by the Heroes. It's a Fallen Path.
not exactly as if it too much or too long to treat it, someone could be dead. Also, depend on how low the level, a normal person lile villager could be dead too way way faster. Raphtalia is almost level 40 limit & she is seriously injured even though only a brief moment.
Yea, also curse series are universal to all heroes. But it's like if they give in to their emotions they lose, heavily.

Wrath is a strong emotion. It is like fire, if focused on the right target, it is helpful. But if left unchecked, it can turn into a wild fire and destroy everything on its path without any hesitation. Naofumi is indeed lucky he has supporters like Raphtalia and Filo, or he himself will burn and destroy that world.
I've heard the quote that Wrath is "justice without charity." The sin is defined by excess without any real benefit. Naofumi punishing the king and evil princess would be justice. Naofumi destroying the entire kingdom in revenge for how he was treated would still be justified but it would be an act of evil.

Funny thing is that if not for Raphtalia and Firo he probably wouldve destroyed the whole world. This shield of wrath is only the first, aka Shield of Wrath I, and It can go up to at least Shield of Wrath V. If Naofumi didnt have anyone to stop him then he would probably get Shield of Wrath V or higher in less then a week, and with how powerful this shields attack and defence are nobody would be able to stop him with brute force once he goes on a rampage.
On top of that if he could feed this shield with Dragon components, cursed items and Demon Lords weapon (who is dead at this point), he would truly become unstoppable.

Yeah It quickly outpaces the rest of his abilities but gets harder and harder to control and the price it exacts gets higher and higher.
Yet it gets more and more op to offset the costs.
Can't agree more. Tbh I dislike that the anime doesn't show nearly as much of his inner monologue. That really shows how he views/cares about the world, as in hates it. I think a lot more anime-only would understand this episode in particular more, if they could've read some passages from the LN.

That shield is actually called the shield of wrath and is one of the cursed shields in the cursed shield series.
My interpretation of those symbols that appeared when Naofumi activated the shield of wrath was something along the lines of the shield of wrath as well as all of the other cursed shield series being so powerful that the shields in the skill tree are made “irrelevant” and pale extremely in power. So it overrides all of them and the shield of wrath takes over.
I'm a light novel reader and there is some minor things that the episode did not clarify. One of them is: the shield burns the dragon because the dragon is attacking him, it's a counter attack skill. The curse shield also has a higher attack rate so he can actually do some damage on monsters.
I don't really want to spoil anything but the cursed shield is not cliche at all, although the shield has some broken skills it also has VERY real costs for Naofumi especially later in the series.

@@pforgottonsoul Yeah they all got theirs but unlike naofumi when they went through their trauma that made them unlock the curse series of weapons they didnt have their own raphtalia to keep them from being eaten away by the curse the spear ends up viewing all women as pigs.....literally the sword can not touch money anymore(it kinda disintegrates the moment he touches it) and the bow ends up losing his emotions completely for quite a while these massive side effects are likely because while naofumi unlocks 1 curse series the others unlock 2 and they use them enough that by the time naofumi stops them theyre nearly at the max lvl for those curses.

*FINALLY, the Shield of Rage, ive been waiting for this moment for a long time, I just love these Hollow Ichigo, Kyuubi Naruto and Juggernaut Drive Issei moments, also the CG on the Dragon looked fine to me, though CG in anime never bothered me in the first place, unless its Berserk 2016.*

My thoughts on the dragon exactly, it's janky in movement and appearance but it's a zombie it's not supposed to be neat and clean.

Dude I was straight scared for Filo since this is a very dark realistic fantasy that doesn't pull punches.
I was expecting her to be alive inside the stomach, but basically injured to the point where she could die without treatment. I was quite surprised when she popped out unharmed.

I like the curse shield its a literal representation of his hated becoming toxic too himself and loved ones around him. It shows that you can become addicted too hated and its something that you have too deal with.
I think when the cursed shield activates, all other skills in his tree get negated, and it's only the "benefits" of the cursed shield. That was my impression when that showed up considering it isn't a part of the normal skill tree. Also people that automatically think a series is bad just cause of cliches don't make sense to me because so much stuff has happened with every piece of media in existence, can a cliche even be a cliche these days? Everything you can think of has been done somewhere.
Oh before I forget, let's not forget that Naofumi denied Raphtalia's request to stay with her at the end of the day. This reinforces my belief that this won't be a harem people jumped the gun about.

I love this episode. First it shows how far Naofumi has come in how much he cares for Raph and Filo. Then it gives a pretty organic reason as to why he temporarily loses his mind with him believing he just watched a friend die. I thought the realization of how his flames were hurting Raph was well executed. And the whole thing ends with the trio acknowledging the errors they each made in the fight and agreeing to do better. It kinda encapsulates everything I love about this show!

This was a beautiful episode in my opinion. I hope we see more of the curse shield (mostly so Naofumi can turn it on the princess and make her suffer).

The cursed shield series gets more powerful later on for better or worse. The doctor mentioned he used holy water bandages to heal Raphilia, just that they didn't have enough to treat fully. They have to go to a bigger town for that
wait people didn't like this ep because of cliche? To be honest I think the way they handle it and the build it up was handle very well. It didn't feel like "Oh main character got plot armor" Type of thing. We are clearly shown the progression of this relationship with ralph through out the anime. Legit only person he trusts at the moment other then frilo(or how ever you spell her name) on top of that this "rage" moment was more grounded then most, sure he gain what looks like a powerful ability but yet it didn't even come close to one shooting this enemy.

from the web novel the shield he use is not the rage shield but the hatred shield as hatred shield is a cursed tree only and rage shield is a cursed tree seven deadly sin and will be unlock (upgraded hatred shield to hatred shield [III] ) in later episode (later in the story)
That was retconned in the rewrite.

This episode was needed on so many levels to set up story arcs. There were a couple of no nos that will jump up and bite the Naofumi party on the butt down the road. I will say there is more to the "Cursed Shield" then just as plain old rage.

Wrath, fury, hatred, rage all are different names for Anger. Anger is a very good motivator and a very good source of power. But in Noufumi's case the anger is easily the most strongest offence in his arsenal. But the Shield of wrath is like Purple haze. It doesn't discriminate between ally and foe. It will burn either of them. Just like fire. It burns everything
I can't tell if he's the densest protagonist or the most self aware when it comes to Raphtalia's advances.
He sees her as 10 yr old. So its just a harmless crush. He wants to bail on that shit world the second he can, so why bother?

The two "cliches" actually happened earlier already, people just didn't know what was happening. The first was when they were in the arena after the duel. If Raphtalia wasn't there to snap him out of it, he would have massacred everyone there.
This isn't a spoiler btw, it was just better explained the LN.
So from what I derived from the manga that the curse she had was more over a painful burn. Painful and scarring not so much life threatening (it's been awhile aince I've read this part correct me if I'm wrong)
As for the "tattoo" it seemed not that it was a fully open skill tree but more that the cursed series took over the tree and became his only working effects. This was an interesting take on the cursed shield coming out, compared to the manga.
Naofumi mention that Shield of Rage isn't on the upgrade/shield tree...so it could possibly mean curse series has their own set of tree, which is why the other shield slot is blank

Each curse series has their own unique curse, for Example the curse for using the greed curse series is that any item u touch or come into contact with will automatically degrade so if u were to touch gold it would turn into bronze or smtg like that
I love how this episode coincidentally connects to a Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield meme which it is funny and great review.
It sets up to potentially show more discrimination in the world. Remember the part about the bandages and holy water. They'll need stronger holy water from a big city. How well will that go considering she is a demi-human, slave, and partner to the Shield Hero?
I was pretty happy that Naofumi had the power to defeat the zombie dragon with his cursed shield series. This means with the cursed shield series he’s around the same level of attack power that the sword hero had at the time he defeated the dragon
Raphtalia and Filo are like the two people in this world he does wan't dead at this point so makes sense she could wake him up.
I doubt Filo would be able to do that.
im just gonna point this out we see the effects of the curse on naofumi from the start of the anime, during the fight with the spear hero is when the shield starts to unlock but its kept in check by raphtalia's actions, seeing filo get eaten alive restarted the unlocking process that raphtalia stopped

you didn t talk about the most important thing in this episode, witch is the fact that the shield hero can deal a lot of damage with the cursed shield, remember he was forced to recrute members because he can not kill enemy, and he can not equip wapons. I m not gonna spoil any thing but that is the most important thing with the curst shield that will be more relevant later on.
For me as someone who has read the light novel and manga I felt that i loved how the anime did this, for me It was never quite so intense in my head as I imagined and it made it a lot more intense for me and I really liked the way they did this.

This weeks episode was pretty good seeing Naofumi's bond with Raphtalia and filo grow and finally seeing the cursed series in action got me pumped even if it was for a short while. I think Naofumi is now the clean up guy for the other hero's messes

I think the actual symbolism behind the curse shield is that it turns into the only option at that point. if you pay close attention the symbol for the original shield changes into the curse shield symbol and then infects all the other surrounding ones.
a bit on missing minor details. shield hero actually calculated that a zombie dragon in a game is always more powerful than the normal ones. That's why he wanna take a more defensive strategy but Filo being a wild card kinda ruin that.
I'm not sure I see the fact that Raphtalia stopped him is a cliche. He didn't overcome some physical force with the power of love or something, he was just reminded by her existence that there are good people and he doesn't want to destroy them. From the look of things, a desire to destroy everything is a prerequisite for the curse shield and he doesn't want to destroy everything so the curse shield thing doesn't come into play because he doesn't meet the requirements. That's pretty straightforward from what I can see.
the story behind the cursed series is really interestimg, at leas was in the LN. Also remember the LN was written in, what, 2012 and that was when sao was a big thing, so as far as cliche goes, i am really ok with them.
someone might have already said this but I think the curse shield showing its symbol all over his body might mean that it locks out all other active abilities and the ability to change shields while the cursed series is active and not under control. Through mastery it's bound to change, though it's just speculation.
in the manga Ren (sword hero) slay the dragon to take the fangs, horns and claws to feed them to his weapon, which somewhat exlains why Firo was not killed when it bite and swallow her up, but here you could see fangs and claws on that dragon.
i did like the episode. like you said cliches are pretty much unavoidable in fiction, but their implementation are what makes the difference at the end.

When Naofumi went full on berserker rage, I had a brief flashback to Orson from Record of Lodoss War. Specifically the first time he rages on screen. This, to me at least, was an awesome moment. Looking forward to seeing how he handles (or mishandles) it in the future. :)
The anime adapted two LN volumes so far. Based on how it's doing, it's not a bad adaptation yet it does feel fast paced at times as well as the subpar animation moments that were shown in episode 8.
I still have hope for it, and the anime will get better (assuming Kinema Citrus make this anime quality, yet some are not liking the recent episodes so far) due to the upcoming events.
Also... manga readers, WN readers and LN readers are anticipating the best moment in the series... yet it's still kinda far lol

I feel that Volume 2 was when the pacing was getting either slow and such, but for the time being I feel it'll get better once the rest of the episodes come out hopefully. I read ahead of the manga and I loved it, but the direction of the anime is worrying me a bit. I still love it, but I don't want a Darling in the Franxx ending again
Same tbh, a lot of people have expressed their negativity towards the series (mainly anime-only watchers). As well as them saying the excessive hate towards Naofumi is contrived when the anime foreshadows/hints stuff, showing that there's more to play regarding how people hate the Shield Hero
LN Volume 2 is the weakest according to some people, yet LN volume 3 is where it picks up. I read the manga and a bit of the LN and the anime is faithful to the story so far while it cuts/changes some things.
I don't think the anime is half-assed due to that, so I have hope.
The way I see the cursed shield series is it’s like the werewolf or vampire skill trees in Skyrim that can be triggered by a specific event but can’t be seen prior however I believe that he will achieve some control over them but not to the full extent
The Sword Hero really doesn't understand that meat left out will rot and that plague is carried on the wind. (And, yes I understand that the other three still think this is a game.)

To be fair the only times I have dealt with a dragons body in an pen in paper rpg was eating it and taking its scales.
It's different from other "evil inside me" tropes.
He'll somehow able to manage it, but that power is always trying to corrupt him. So he'll use it as little as possible because it's costly.
Also, I don't know if we'll be ever able to see it in the anime ( because , we know , seasons ) but there's a very specific reason why the Curse Series exists, and it's explained - or yet again understood - by Naofumi later.
Let's just say that all the Hero have the potential to have one, and it's tied to the True Enemy, Raphtalia's origins and the previous heroes.

His armor is called barbarian armor wink wink he is a barbarian with light armor and magic shield with 18 CON and 16 STR i'll give him about 13 DEX. I have never played dnd but i like to watch vídeos about their stories so i know quite a lot on this point
Anger is his fuel, cursed is his shield, rage is his power, fire is his blood, he protected many yet him protetced few, as he prayis Unlimited Rage Works.
Minor spoiler, as of the next wave the shield is cannot be broken. And is stronger than any other hero weapon.
So let's call whatever is giving the heros the text and GUIs they can see, but others can't "that weapon's AI" to filter between what the heros can make their weapons do and what the weapons do on their own because something is clearly acting independent of the hero's.
So the questions the shield's AI was asking where very pointed and in a specific direction. It didn't ask about the dragon at all, it asked more on a world scale. Let's look at the questions:
"Do you seek power?" That sound a lot like a deal with a devil.
"Do you hate everything?" It could be flipped over as asking if there is enough you don't hate to say no with avoiding letting the target focus on anything they don't hate.
Then it seems to start glitch screen flashing literal examples of things he hates the most before it shifts to more resemble Naofumi remembering even more things he hates. The Shield's AI seems to be manipulating Naofumi toward destroying "everything".
This cursed series is some scary stuff and now that you mention it I do wonder if there are some other shields that can only be invoked instead of selected. What other emotions might evoke an overkill reaction that might consume you.

This was a good episode and I think they adapted it well as a LN reader (CGI dragon notwithstanding). I really enjoyed getting to see Naofumi's shield of rage/cursed series mode visualized too since we didn't get very much of that drawn in the LN. For anime only folks, I can also tell you that should the pacing keep going as it is (they've done a good job thus far), we should get to two arcs soon that will really make this series fantastic and stand out. Hopefully they really start putting serious effort into the animation as well even on episodes that aren't as climactic such as this one. That would really put this anime over the top and make an already great series even better!
(This is kinda long sorry ...) How far along is the light novel ? And how many volumes do you think the anime will adapt by the end of the second season ? I know the web novel is over but I’ve heard that the light novel might change some things . What are some things you are looking forward to in the light novel that are coming ? And finally is my girl Raphtalia notices please say yes cause my boi Naofumi NEEDS her for the rest of his life and what better way to do that than to start a family .

Marcos Javier, I think the LN is currently up to volume 13 or so in English, but there are more to come. I’m on volume 10 currently. As far as the Naofumi and Raphtalia relationship, I’d just caution you to wait things out. Shield hero does a good job at character development, but that means that things take time to come about and slowly build on what came before. But you won’t be disappointed in the end 😉
In terms of things to look forward to, the next wave should be cool and the church of the three heroes arc should be excellent if they take time to adapt it (and they probably will based on what they’ve done so far). I’ve actually been wondering how far they will adapt the LN myself for this season. Hopefully we get more seasons since the LN only gets better as it goes, but I think based on current pacing that they may stop either shortly after the church of the three heroes arc or end it at the journey to Cal Mira island. But we shall see! Anyway, let me know if you have any more questions!

THEN AGAIN Raphtalia does kinda counter every other bad thing that happened to him I love the dynamic the writer did a strong female lead that does not only complete out MC but also adds so much to the story not just romantic interest and comic relief a truly well done rounded character and you guys keep saying it gets even better I can hardly wait appreciate the reply man

it was more of an actual fight instead of him just blocking and, at a certain point, when the dragon grabs Naofumi and Raphtalia (who was already burned) Naofumi has to risk hurting her even more so that he could save themselfs

The curse shield, when first appeared in this episode, legit gave me the most goosebumps I've ever had in all my anime history of 4 years (and life too, actually)
I didn’t like the fact that the dragon was CGI, that is pretty much it.
To me they didn't make the madness and raging good enough. And when Filo got eaten, the atmosphere was too light. Other then that the pacing was good.
@@blackwingBF I can agree with that. They should've attempted to make Filo's "death" more meaningful, otherwise it would have been a throw-away kill of a meaningless character. At least she is not dead.

Quick theory, the curse shield cursed raphtalia, not the dragon.
During the episode, she was never near the dragon nor its flesh as the nurse said later. She did, however, touch naofumi to "wake" him from his rage. After, you see she was hurt. Its also likely that she would have lied to make it seem as if it was the dragon that caused this so that blame wouldnt be thrown on naofumi. Naofumi may also realize this, but not want to openly admit it, so he cares for her more diligently and puts her at top priority out of guilt and compassion. This wouldve been a great semi-hidden plotpoint to further demonstrate the harm he causes from the curse series.

All the icons of his skill tree becoming red rather represents that he lost control over his shield and his abilities. When you use a skill in a mmorpg, the skills become unuseable for a certain amount of time (called cooldown). During which they become red.

i think a key to this is in the opening. the opening makes it look like raphtalia is the key to controlling it.

Among the heroes, only naofumi can read the local language. As he learn it to read the books given by the locals. The heroes weapon only translate spoken language and not written language.

Interestingly, they skipped just HOW they got rid of the dragon body. In the Manga, Firo ATE the dragon body.... I guess that was too much for TV?
Actually no. Even in the manga, Naofumi forbid filo on eating a rotten meat. dragon corpse got chopped off to picese cleaned up normaly offscreen panel too. It's gonna be good for fertilizer.

The Curse Series is a series built on hatred. However the requirement was also something else. Remember Naofumi feed his shield off of dead this and materials. The Curse Shield requirement was the Zombie Dragon itself. It also didn't help the fact that Filo ate the dragon core from inside because now that is a connection from the cursed shield.
Also in the manga, seeing Raphtalia hurt had snapped Naofumi out of the cursed form. He realized he hurt his own party member and felt guilty about it. At this point people should really read the manga or light novel because the anime seems to fail to properly showcase that reasoning.

the Curse Series is a "cristalisation" of negative feelings of every past user, it is not a "part" of the shield, and having a Curse Series puts you in a permanent state of cursed, as Ive mentioned before, Naofumis lack of taste or other little things, like hearing things like muffled when they tell him good things, but clearly hear even far off mumbles of someone bad mouthing him, were part of the Curse he had, but Raph was able to bring him back, he still has a bit of it, but Raph and Filo are able to keep it at minimun just by being there
now, it is increadibly powerful, but it can never be mastered, it feeds on ones negative emotions and feed those negative emotions, sufice to say, if Raph hadnt saved Naofumi after the duel, he would most likely activated the Curse series and killed everyone, lv difference be dammed
as to why Naofumi had already been cursed without fully obtaining it, is because he was already at the door of liberating it, he just neede one small push, but since he was already basically touching the door to it, he became cursed
Where are you getting this? It's not in any part of the LN that has yet been translated to English, nor do I recall anything like it form the Web Novel fan translation I read years ago. Are you reading ahead in Japanese? If that's how the author wrote it, OK, but it's not needed. Naofumi's trauma was plenty to cause sensory distortions all on its own. No need for a curse to do what psychology has long explained.

The anime showed too little. Now everyone's downplaying the curse series and the fact that Raphtalia is literally one of the few people who actually believe in him. More so, trust him enough to travel together.
i think the shield has a conscious mind in its own, that was awaken only when the curses set was discovered

Something I feel that should be pointed out, I feel like there may be a misunderstanding about the new shield. In the light novel and the manga, the Rage Shield was actually called the Shield of Wrath. As in the Deadly Sin of Wrath, It still plays into the fact that it's a shield fueled by Naofumi's rage. But It's more of a aspect of the seven deadly sins, which he and the other hero's are supposedly able to tap into. Not sure why they decided to down play it in the anime. But I'm sure we'll get more into it later on.

I believe the Shield Hero just found his (in game) limit break
the cursed shield = limit break ( if y'all don't catch my drift)
( just in case if y'all don't understand what I'm talking about)
limit break: with hack and slash games they tend to have that meter off to the side and which once filled it will activate the limit break; and upon that one of two things will happen.
A. The character will be Invincible for a limited amount of time and possibly has a regenerative healing process ( however still will take damage it's just small amounts and enemies will be unable to interrupt combos)
B. does a special move in which once activated the move wood insta-kill hordes of enemies ( or maybe not but it does pack a "HEAVY" punch)
and finally C. Manipulates the area around said character causing it to be more harder or suspend enemies for a limited amount of time
however to use a limit break a condition must be met. In game condition is "meter must be filled"
"limit breaks" are awesome.....
