Spear Hero: Released a plague onto a village. Sword Hero: Left a corpse to rot which caused an epidemic. Bow Hero: Is fake modest and overthrew a country's royalty. Shield Hero: Didn't say thank you for overpriced holy water. Yep. All four of those crimes are definitely equal.
Anyone who likes Malty seems to be firmly in "love to hate" territory. Which is funny because Raynare from Highschool DxD pushes many of the same buttons as her and people whitewash her like Draco Malfoy.
The main issue is that Naofumi, as the supposed devil, is being an incredibly competent hero and fixing the aftermath of the other heroes' incompetence. Basically, the heroes are kinda proving the inverse of the 3-heroes church's doctrine: that the shield is pure evil and that the sword, bow, and shield are the only "true" heroes. Basically, Naofumi being an actually effective hero is causing the people to lose their faith in the church, and thus weakening the church's power. This is literally an existential crisis for the 3-heroes church. Also, if you remember the book Naofumi picked up and got him isekai'ed, it described each of the heroes and what they were known for (as well as the princess, whom aofumi said seemed like kind of a bitch). In it, it labeled the spear hero as incredibly loyal to his friends. Basically, each of the other 3 heroes are riffs on the stereotypical protagonist. The sword is a loner (like Kirito), the bow is obsessed with justice, and the spear is loyal to a fault (heavy on "fault", especially when the person he's loyal to is a heinous bitch). But yeah, I think you're right that if things were different and Motoyasu's party were actually decent people then he would probably be a lot more likeable. Instead he is a warning against completely blind loyalty over any form of critical thinking.

But why does the church think the shield hero is the devil?......why does the other heroes being worst than the shield hero makes them unworthy and false?.....That s the actual reason. Killing two heroes makes it harder for him to get back to his world since they can only return together and if they defeat the waves, which also can only happen if they wordk together. Best episode yet. Also while the I hate the pope, he does have a point in the heroes (besides Naofumi) being trash. I honestly hate how The Spear hero literally had to have a villain confessed to what he did instead of actually listening to Naofumi which just shows how dumb he is.
I wouldn't say he's dumb. We have to remember he only knew Naofumi for a day before everything went to shit. He had no reason to trust him. Then he was traveling with Myne for a month before the first wave. Getting to "know" her and he saw her as a victim which fed into his hero complex. By this time he had been traveling with Myne for 2 to 3 months. He has probably been manipulated so much over the course of this series that if we were following his perspective I'm sure we would have a better understanding of what he has dealt with and what lies Myne has filled his head with. The Spear is as much of a victim as Naofumi just in a different way. Where as Naofumi's reputation was ruined and he had to essentially fight for everything just to get by, The Spear was handed everything he needed and was blinded by it only to become a pawn to Myne and her agenda thinking that he is helping a close friend. Or I could be wrong about all this. I've only seen the anime so a manga person might have more insight than me.
Also, you see him not being all too pleased when Ren and Itsuki called Myne out for cheating in Ep 4. The Church and kingdom were supposed to make sure that Naofumi would never get strong. However, things kept going wrong for them: - The capital's classicism caused the commonfolk to gravitate towards Naofumi as he was the only hero who helped them out. - Motoyasu, Ren, and Itsuki were destroying the Church's credibility with their mishaps: releasing a mutant plant, causing an epidemic, and overthrowing a lord without thinking things over. - Naofumi was the star player in the 2nd wave and was able to withstand Glass's attacks. - The king lost all leverage on Naofumi. He tried to make Naofumi spill his secrets to buff the other 3 heroes, but being the merchant he is, Naofumi didn't want to leave the throne room without gaining something. Either he leaves without sharing his methods or he spills the beans after the king kneels to him. So after seeing how weak the king has become and how incompetent the other 3 heroes are, the Pope finally went, "Fuck this. I'll kill everyone and take charge".
@@stormstory9765 I won't spoil things for you with details, but I will say that Spear is not a good person and is certainly dumb. During the face-off in the mountains (ep 13), he basically assaulted Filo like a total creeper and was absolutely oblivious to the fact that Myne was blatantly trying to kill her sister (aka THE PERSON HE WAS SENT TO PROTECT!!!). There's also a point coming up in the story (don't worry, no spoilers) where I honestly believe he loses any and all right to redemption/pity if he had any left. I agree that Motoyasu isn't a malicious person and does have good intentions (sort of), there have been plenty of signs for him to pick up on in terms of Myne and what she really is.
If the fight it's a bit rushed, yes. The final part it's gonna be great (though I would prefer it at the begining of the next one after that, more time to enjoy it XD)

One of the better depictions of Satan is in a series called "The Collector" It follows a former priest that went to hell for his transgressions in life and becomes Satan's debt collector, essentially. Satan makes an appearance in almost every episode and each timer, as someone completely different. From a young (like maybe eight or so) girl to a grizzled old man. I do understand your sentiment though. Naofumi doesn't exactly put out a vibe of "The Prince of Darkness" does he? :) Okay maybe more so when he uses the chaos shield. :)
*PLEASE READ (Clarification + Fitoria explained)* Since the majority seem to not understand the plot at all, pls let me explain what exactly Fitorias point was. From Fitoria's point of view the four cardinal heroes *must* work together in order to defeat the waves. There is no other option. Fitoria asking Naofumi, if he ever tried to prove his innocence, was not to blame him for the whole situation, but it was to point out that there is still hope to fix the situation. She was giving herself and Naofumi hope that not everything is lost yet. She was not blaming Naofumi, but just pointing out that not every card has been played yet. Another thing i wanted to point out is that Naofumi is right to say that he hasn't tried and has been accepting the way things are, because thats exactly what happened! He was blamed for everything, which he denied and then angrily left and did his own thing. Thats what he has been doing the whole time. Never, not even once has he tried to clean his name. He never tried to proof other ppl wrong. He just left everything, all accusations uncommented. From his point of view the whole world is against him and nothing he says will change anything, so thats why he simply gave up and just accepted his situation as it is and Fitoria is right. Not denying accusations is basically admitting "Yes, it was me. I did it". As i said before Fitoria only gave him the advice to do sth about that and clean his name and not let the world trample over him.

The heroes all align with another isekai protagonist pretty well: Naofumi=Subaru (otaku who is initially excited about coming to a new world only to discover that he's the least special person in it and get put through hell) Ren=Kirito (socially-awkward swordsman who wears black and prefers to work alone) Itsuki=Haruyuki (short teenage boy who was bullied in school and has a huge inferority complex, which causes him to behave irrationally) Motoyasu=Kazuma (creepy, perverted jerkass who falls in love with a loli and makes things harder for the real heroes)
Nah, Chibi, I think you take this the wrong way instead. TAKE NOTE that the pope is the leader of three cardinal heroes religion. This implicated the fact that he even tried to kill all heroes are for pure corruption. Looking at how stupid & useless the three heroes, also kinda damaging the image of the religion, so of course this would anger the pope that wanna keep the status quo as far as controlling the country itself. Meanwhile shield hero already deemed as the devil to their religion from the get go. There's nothing good about the pope. What I wasn't expecting is that this church isn't acting in tandem with the crown but would rather completely overturn the country's ruling system. This pontiff is very ambitious. P.S.: Nah, that pontiff is not a good guy, no amount of moral relativism (absurd standing) can save him. You don't resort to violence as the first answer to your problems. If he was a good person, he'd capture and confront the heroes in a trial, to be judged and would be as impartial as possible (although that'd be impossible).
It’s a religion we are talking about here. Religions are not fair, they have a moral and an ethic code and everything that’s not accepted is exactly that: not accepted. Moreover a religion (every religion) teaches you that the only right things are what the religious authorities are saying, so everything that is not accepted must be changed or eliminated. This is pretty much how the majority of religions used to work in our history. Sure things are changed nowadays but christianity/islam and far more “primitive” religions were just like that

Malty is a bad apple, but the king is doing okay to everyone but the shield hero, the queen is nailing it preventing wars, Melty is still young but has promise. He has no reason to replace the royal family other than his own gain.

What the pope said is like what the villain killer Stain from my hero academia. Their reason make sense but their actions do more harm than good. I agree with what they say bout calling naofumi a devil but this devil has actually done good deeds yes he hides his true emotions but for the sake of his party he has to be like that. Motoyasu and Myne getting betrayed was probably the most fucking satisfying thing I've seen this season. And you know what? Just for that, I'm ready to forgive everything the church does.
I will say I actually think this one few times Mine didn't annoy me. Her role was actually interesting by having her do what she did and how the king treated Naofoumi we were lead believe they were the true villain of the story. However, this story pulled off something completely different. Seeing The Three Hero Chruch taking full control like this is refreshing. In most Fanasty series, I've watched over the years have had the religion of series just background that only a minor threat and a pawn of the corrupt royalty or some other greater begin. Along with that, they have fair motives the heroes were all screw-ups, but risking the entire world safely by destroying the heroes is a bad idea all around. I'm pumped to see how this all turns out.

Yeah, Motoyasu is basically some of the high ranking players in Warframe, they focus on maximizing their ranks fully skipping the learning of the potential of weapons in order to brag to other people by the height of their ranks and claiming that they're veterans/pros which in truth, they're not. Yes it was a really good Episode. It was a sweet payoff, because this was teased some episodes ago. Naofumi knew the church was Evil and he is discriminated against. He really tried hard to speak to Motoyasu. He should soon be awarded something very sweet and he will be. He was also really composed, which he normally not is. Even when his companions were threatened he tried to reason with These buffoons. He took what Fitoria said to heart, after she explained the truth of the world to him very cryptically. He only fought because he had to defend himself. Even the Pope did not Insult him further as being him called worthy of the title devil. I also think the People Standing behind the Pope will be sacrificed. That high class magic will be something which These People will be sacrificed for their belief. Naofumi took Fighting for his innocence very literally this week. He cannot be doing anything else. If they want to hate someone how About Myne. I laughed so hard when I saw her face, after she took notice of the popes betrayal to her expactations. She really deserves that. Ren is gullible. Itsuki is really selfcentered. Motoyasu believes in his comrades. The worst one out of those three is Itsuki, because he cares much less About his Nakama than the other two heroes. Ren even apologized for his rude behaviour towards Naofumi, Itsuki simply dismisses him and Motoyasu is just stupid. There are worse Things than this…..
There's a spin-off manga which, asides from containing spoilers, makes Motoyasu a good guy and has him side with Naofumi (It was something like Yari no yuusha (Spear hero, who'd have guessed?). After taking a read at that, and also from a bit before then, Motoyasu isn't someone I think we're meant to hate, I think he's more pityful that hateful. He is a person with good intentions getting used by someone else to achieve their own goals, without any sort of care by that second person. Motoyasu is literally episode 1 Naofumi, but 1,000,000 times dumber
The spear hero is not a regular protagonist. He is willfully ignorant. A protagonist does not stay ignorant even if they start out that way. A protagonist doesn't take one person's word for something and goes off half-cocked. He's an example of someone who's always going to be a fool unless he's willing to change himself.

I definitely wanna hope that the Sword and Bow heroes are alive, but you also gotta remember the sheet power of the 'Judgement'. It created a huge crater that was red from how hot it was, and the only reason Naofumi, Motoyasu and their parties are okay is because of the Shield's abilities

I also don’t understand what the pope stands to gain from killing them unless it’s like what fitoria said and the pope will summon new heroes again but different from fitoria he saw the how incompetent the heroes were acting and he still let it continue. It seems like he let them do all that to usurp the kingdom power which will eventually get destroyed by the waves.
I *think* the popes plan with killing everyone there was to say that everyone other than naofumi was killed by naofumi, and then the church managed to kill Naofumi which even the spear hero couldn't do. Not only does this make the royal family look incompetent (they just lost both their successors to 1 guy), solidifies more hatred against the shield hero (perhaps to justify not summoning the shield hero in the future?), but it also positions the church as the most powerful party at the moment. Even the king couldn't control Naofumi let alone kill him. Of course, I think part of this plan relies on the ignorance of the pope. After all that Judgement spell is probably the strongest single attack we've seen so far, with a few soldiers to help with protecting the casters you could probably get through the earlier waves, and then there's the question of if there's anything more advanced that they can do.
basically what i have noticed, when naofumi asked if the other heroes where near, fitora said yes, and since he asked in plural i do not think they are actually dead, but maybe just captured by the church and kept hidden, so that maybe him and motoyasu have to go on a "quest to save them"

I disagree with your disagreement. The pope in the medieval ages held more power in the world than all countries combined. He has no use for any more power. He is literally doing his duty and what he thinks is right.
He seems equal to the king maybe even a little lower. As for whether he’s hungry for power I explained that a little in my other comment. Why did he wait until they did all the bad things until he got rid of them, he wanted to have a reason to usurp the power from the king, if he really was that good he should have help the heroes train and not be so laid back
+War Robots Azure Dragon The Shield Hero was already demonized before Naofumi came to that world... so the pope wouldn’t train him in the first place. As for the other heroes, why would the responsibility of training the heroes fall onto the pope? It wouldn’t make sense. The medieval pope had religious domain over dozens of countries and monarchs. To suggest that this pope is LESS powerful than a single country/monarch is laughable. It looks like the pope DOES want to replace the kingdom with a more religious monarch/leader, but certainly not with himself. Finally, the pope probably came to the country to check up on the heroes (or to take refuge from the waves). He definitely doesn’t live in the country. He knew the queen would be sympathetic towards the Shield Hero and didn’t like it. He probably made a deal with Myne to get rid of the Shield Hero in exchange for giving her power. When he found out that the heroes have been screwing up, he got the idea in his head to take out two birds with one stone. He’d get rid of the current dynasty, kill the useless heroes, and establish a new dynasty. One that wouldn’t refrain from the teachings of God. And then he’d summon new heroes. The end.
It’s not his responsibility but since you’ve seen it you should help train them. I mean the waves are getting more and more powerful what doesn’t make sense is to just sit there and do nothing then, and when they all fuck up to kill them(there has to be an ulterior motive here). Because again even if you resummon the hero’s they have to start at level 1 and they also might not even take this seriously too. As for me saying the pope might be less powerful than the king I think it’s valid, though they have religious power and probably their own personal army and apparent hero weapons they still don’t control the armies of the king, and the land of the king. P.s as far as I can tell that religion seems to only in this kingdom. As I’ve said before if he really wanted to save the world he should have done it sooner considering it is risking to do it now when waves are so powerful and there are other forces attacking them too.

Theres a Spin Off manga about Motoyasu 'restarting' back a the beginning but having all the memories of the BS he went through and the lies he was told.
Can I recommend the manga Yari no Yuusha no Yarinaoshi. It is a manga where the spear hero is actually a decent guy that isn't being manipulated by Myne the entire time.

I love all your episode analysis videos. Very detailed and actually coincides with my own opinion. (Sometimes you get things wrong because you havent read the source material, but nevertheless, great vids man)
In the light novel is stated that the 3 heroes, aside of naofumi, do not have any idea if how to use their weapons in a figth, there is no swordmanship, spearmanship or bowmanship involved, they just grind their stat levels and spam their SKILLS without any real strategy or awareness of the battlefield.
Loved the review!! I really enjoy seeing other people's perspectives on this especially one where anime is the first entry point. Because it can reveal new angles to perceive the plot, furthermore uncover inconsistencies that were either introduced or not. Certain scenes in previous episodes were added in the anime that were never in the books so this reveal was a bit more intense in the book than in this episode (at least as far as I can remember but please correct me if I'm wrong). But looking back on this after seeing this review I can definitely say that the anime did a good job in connecting story points and allowing for good plot progression since those added scenes provided for context that actually helped this episode. All in all, this is just my perspective on this and I look forward to seeing your reviews in the future for this series.
There's a flaw in your theory. Basically this was all set up before Naofumi ever arrived. This kingdom and the church has ALWAYS hated the shield hero which is why Mines and her dad set out to discredit the shield hero from day one. Even before the rape allegation, they minimized his abilities and sought to marginalize him. Hence, the spying and the rumor mongering in episode 1. The king and everyone knowledgeable about the cardinal weapons KNOWS the Shield Hero needs companions to level up and they purposely deny him that. They are trying to sideline him because of their faith. So, no, the pope is not "a good guy" from any point of view. He leads a religion that teaches that demihumans are little more than beasts and therefore can be subjugated. One can argue that it is the church's treatment of the Shield Hero that makes him a threat to their way of life. If they embraced him, they could have steered him to their way of thinking. Instead they made him their enemy. It makes no sense why they would only deify 3 of the weapons and demonize the Shield Hero.
Episode 18 of The rising of the shield hero was quite a good one the motoyasu chat gave me a chuckle but good grief he still dull enough to be tricked by Malty, the proper fight was pretty good seeing a combo move was cool, Naofumi blocking the blast was really great seeing more shield in use. Finding out that the pope was evil while not to surprising was nice to find out.
I agree with your assessment of Motoyasu the only thing that they aren’t showing from the LN (understandably) is that he is a little gropey with his party. He thinks all the Girls love him and that gives him the right to ahem ‘have the odd squeeze’ and that particular feature stops him from being that loveable in the other forms of this story.
Finally, Pin head spear hero Motoyasu knows the truth. Pope was shady the entire time, but he did point out the other three hero's mistakes that Naofumi mentioned. Naofumi and company withstood Megumin's explosion caused by the church. Despite the dips in some of the animation, this was a great episode. Next episode is a huge spoiler, but at least we're getting close to grand moment that will make it all worth it.

The main issue is that Naofumi, as the supposed devil, is being an incredibly competent hero and fixing the aftermath of the other heroes' incompetence. Basically, the heroes are kinda proving the inverse of the 3-heroes church's doctrine: that the shield is pure evil and that the sword, bow, and shield are the only "true" heroes.
Basically, Naofumi being an actually effective hero is causing the people to lose their faith in the church, and thus weakening the church's power. This is literally an existential crisis for the 3-heroes church.
Also, if you remember the book Naofumi picked up and got him isekai'ed, it described each of the heroes and what they were known for (as well as the princess, whom aofumi said seemed like kind of a bitch). In it, it labeled the spear hero as incredibly loyal to his friends.
Basically, each of the other 3 heroes are riffs on the stereotypical protagonist. The sword is a loner (like Kirito), the bow is obsessed with justice, and the spear is loyal to a fault (heavy on "fault", especially when the person he's loyal to is a heinous bitch).
But yeah, I think you're right that if things were different and Motoyasu's party were actually decent people then he would probably be a lot more likeable. Instead he is a warning against completely blind loyalty over any form of critical thinking.

Best episode yet. Also while the I hate the pope, he does have a point in the heroes (besides Naofumi) being trash. I honestly hate how The Spear hero literally had to have a villain confessed to what he did instead of actually listening to Naofumi which just shows how dumb he is.
I wouldn't say he's dumb. We have to remember he only knew Naofumi for a day before everything went to shit. He had no reason to trust him. Then he was traveling with Myne for a month before the first wave. Getting to "know" her and he saw her as a victim which fed into his hero complex. By this time he had been traveling with Myne for 2 to 3 months. He has probably been manipulated so much over the course of this series that if we were following his perspective I'm sure we would have a better understanding of what he has dealt with and what lies Myne has filled his head with. The Spear is as much of a victim as Naofumi just in a different way. Where as Naofumi's reputation was ruined and he had to essentially fight for everything just to get by, The Spear was handed everything he needed and was blinded by it only to become a pawn to Myne and her agenda thinking that he is helping a close friend. Or I could be wrong about all this. I've only seen the anime so a manga person might have more insight than me.
Also, you see him not being all too pleased when Ren and Itsuki called Myne out for cheating in Ep 4. The Church and kingdom were supposed to make sure that Naofumi would never get strong. However, things kept going wrong for them:
- The capital's classicism caused the commonfolk to gravitate towards Naofumi as he was the only hero who helped them out.
- Motoyasu, Ren, and Itsuki were destroying the Church's credibility with their mishaps: releasing a mutant plant, causing an epidemic, and overthrowing a lord without thinking things over.
- Naofumi was the star player in the 2nd wave and was able to withstand Glass's attacks.
- The king lost all leverage on Naofumi. He tried to make Naofumi spill his secrets to buff the other 3 heroes, but being the merchant he is, Naofumi didn't want to leave the throne room without gaining something. Either he leaves without sharing his methods or he spills the beans after the king kneels to him.
So after seeing how weak the king has become and how incompetent the other 3 heroes are, the Pope finally went, "Fuck this. I'll kill everyone and take charge".

@@stormstory9765 I won't spoil things for you with details, but I will say that Spear is not a good person and is certainly dumb. During the face-off in the mountains (ep 13), he basically assaulted Filo like a total creeper and was absolutely oblivious to the fact that Myne was blatantly trying to kill her sister (aka THE PERSON HE WAS SENT TO PROTECT!!!).
There's also a point coming up in the story (don't worry, no spoilers) where I honestly believe he loses any and all right to redemption/pity if he had any left.
I agree that Motoyasu isn't a malicious person and does have good intentions (sort of), there have been plenty of signs for him to pick up on in terms of Myne and what she really is.

Satan can take any forms. His most iconic forms are a Snake and a Goat. Although a Goat is associated with Azazel. Satan can take many forms, bro. He can even become a little girl. Tanya is basically Satan in the eyes of some of her comrades.
One of the better depictions of Satan is in a series called "The Collector" It follows a former priest that went to hell for his transgressions in life and becomes Satan's debt collector, essentially. Satan makes an appearance in almost every episode and each timer, as someone completely different. From a young (like maybe eight or so) girl to a grizzled old man.
I do understand your sentiment though. Naofumi doesn't exactly put out a vibe of "The Prince of Darkness" does he? :) Okay maybe more so when he uses the chaos shield. :)

Since the majority seem to not understand the plot at all, pls let me
explain what exactly Fitorias point was.
From Fitoria's point of view the four cardinal heroes *must* work
together in order to defeat the waves. There is no other option. Fitoria
asking Naofumi, if he ever tried to prove his innocence, was not to
blame him for the whole situation, but it was to point out that there is
still hope to fix the situation. She was giving herself and Naofumi
hope that not everything is lost yet. She was not blaming Naofumi, but
just pointing out that not every card has been played yet.
Another thing i wanted to point out is that Naofumi is right to say that
he hasn't tried and has been accepting the way things are, because
thats exactly what happened! He was blamed for everything, which he
denied and then angrily left and did his own thing. Thats what he has
been doing the whole time. Never, not even once has he tried to clean
his name. He never tried to proof other ppl wrong. He just left
everything, all accusations uncommented.
From his point of view the whole world is against him and nothing he
says will change anything, so thats why he simply gave up and just
accepted his situation as it is and Fitoria is right. Not denying
accusations is basically admitting "Yes, it was me. I did it". As i said
before Fitoria only gave him the advice to do sth about that and clean
his name and not let the world trample over him.
One thing I don't get is why of all choice fitoria only choose to talk to naofumi, or it because the other 3 hero are too hopeless

The heroes all align with another isekai protagonist pretty well:
Naofumi=Subaru (otaku who is initially excited about coming to a new world only to discover that he's the least special person in it and get put through hell)
Ren=Kirito (socially-awkward swordsman who wears black and prefers to work alone)
Itsuki=Haruyuki (short teenage boy who was bullied in school and has a huge inferority complex, which causes him to behave irrationally)
Motoyasu=Kazuma (creepy, perverted jerkass who falls in love with a loli and makes things harder for the real heroes)

If he was a good person, he'd capture and confront the heroes in a trial, to be judged and would be as impartial as possible (although that'd be impossible).

It’s a religion we are talking about here. Religions are not fair, they have a moral and an ethic code and everything that’s not accepted is exactly that: not accepted. Moreover a religion (every religion) teaches you that the only right things are what the religious authorities are saying, so everything that is not accepted must be changed or eliminated. This is pretty much how the majority of religions used to work in our history. Sure things are changed nowadays but christianity/islam and far more “primitive” religions were just like that

Motoyasu and Myne getting betrayed was probably the most fucking satisfying thing I've seen this season. And you know what? Just for that, I'm ready to forgive everything the church does.
I will say I actually think this one few times Mine didn't annoy me. Her role was actually interesting by having her do what she did and how the king treated Naofoumi we were lead believe they were the true villain of the story. However, this story pulled off something completely different. Seeing The Three Hero Chruch taking full control like this is refreshing. In most Fanasty series, I've watched over the years have had the religion of series just background that only a minor threat and a pawn of the corrupt royalty or some other greater begin. Along with that, they have fair motives the heroes were all screw-ups, but risking the entire world safely by destroying the heroes is a bad idea all around. I'm pumped to see how this all turns out.

Yeah, Motoyasu is basically some of the high ranking players in Warframe, they focus on maximizing their ranks fully skipping the learning of the potential of weapons in order to brag to other people by the height of their ranks and claiming that they're veterans/pros which in truth, they're not.

Yes it was a really good Episode. It was a sweet payoff, because this was teased some episodes ago. Naofumi knew the church was Evil and he is discriminated against. He really tried hard to speak to Motoyasu. He should soon be awarded something very sweet and he will be. He was also really composed, which he normally not is. Even when his companions were threatened he tried to reason with These buffoons. He took what Fitoria said to heart, after she explained the truth of the world to him very cryptically. He only fought because he had to defend himself.
Even the Pope did not Insult him further as being him called worthy of the title devil. I also think the People Standing behind the Pope will be sacrificed. That high class magic will be something which These People will be sacrificed for their belief.
Naofumi took Fighting for his innocence very literally this week. He cannot be doing anything else. If they want to hate someone how About Myne. I laughed so hard when I saw her face, after she took notice of the popes betrayal to her expactations. She really deserves that.
Ren is gullible. Itsuki is really selfcentered. Motoyasu believes in his comrades. The worst one out of those three is Itsuki, because he cares much less About his Nakama than the other two heroes. Ren even apologized for his rude behaviour towards Naofumi, Itsuki simply dismisses him and Motoyasu is just stupid. There are worse Things than this…..

There's a spin-off manga which, asides from containing spoilers, makes Motoyasu a good guy and has him side with Naofumi (It was something like Yari no yuusha (Spear hero, who'd have guessed?). After taking a read at that, and also from a bit before then, Motoyasu isn't someone I think we're meant to hate, I think he's more pityful that hateful. He is a person with good intentions getting used by someone else to achieve their own goals, without any sort of care by that second person.
Motoyasu is literally episode 1 Naofumi, but 1,000,000 times dumber
The spear hero is not a regular protagonist. He is willfully ignorant. A protagonist does not stay ignorant even if they start out that way. A protagonist doesn't take one person's word for something and goes off half-cocked. He's an example of someone who's always going to be a fool unless he's willing to change himself.

I also don’t understand what the pope stands to gain from killing them unless it’s like what fitoria said and the pope will summon new heroes again but different from fitoria he saw the how incompetent the heroes were acting and he still let it continue. It seems like he let them do all that to usurp the kingdom power which will eventually get destroyed by the waves.
I *think* the popes plan with killing everyone there was to say that everyone other than naofumi was killed by naofumi, and then the church managed to kill Naofumi which even the spear hero couldn't do. Not only does this make the royal family look incompetent (they just lost both their successors to 1 guy), solidifies more hatred against the shield hero (perhaps to justify not summoning the shield hero in the future?), but it also positions the church as the most powerful party at the moment. Even the king couldn't control Naofumi let alone kill him.
Of course, I think part of this plan relies on the ignorance of the pope. After all that Judgement spell is probably the strongest single attack we've seen so far, with a few soldiers to help with protecting the casters you could probably get through the earlier waves, and then there's the question of if there's anything more advanced that they can do.

basically what i have noticed, when naofumi asked if the other heroes where near, fitora said yes, and since he asked in plural i do not think they are actually dead, but maybe just captured by the church and kept hidden, so that maybe him and motoyasu have to go on a "quest to save them"

I disagree with your disagreement. The pope in the medieval ages held more power in the world than all countries combined. He has no use for any more power. He is literally doing his duty and what he thinks is right.
He seems equal to the king maybe even a little lower. As for whether he’s hungry for power I explained that a little in my other comment. Why did he wait until they did all the bad things until he got rid of them, he wanted to have a reason to usurp the power from the king, if he really was that good he should have help the heroes train and not be so laid back
+War Robots Azure Dragon The Shield Hero was already demonized before Naofumi came to that world... so the pope wouldn’t train him in the first place. As for the other heroes, why would the responsibility of training the heroes fall onto the pope? It wouldn’t make sense.
The medieval pope had religious domain over dozens of countries and monarchs. To suggest that this pope is LESS powerful than a single country/monarch is laughable.
It looks like the pope DOES want to replace the kingdom with a more religious monarch/leader, but certainly not with himself.
Finally, the pope probably came to the country to check up on the heroes (or to take refuge from the waves). He definitely doesn’t live in the country. He knew the queen would be sympathetic towards the Shield Hero and didn’t like it. He probably made a deal with Myne to get rid of the Shield Hero in exchange for giving her power. When he found out that the heroes have been screwing up, he got the idea in his head to take out two birds with one stone. He’d get rid of the current dynasty, kill the useless heroes, and establish a new dynasty. One that wouldn’t refrain from the teachings of God. And then he’d summon new heroes. The end.
It’s not his responsibility but since you’ve seen it you should help train them. I mean the waves are getting more and more powerful what doesn’t make sense is to just sit there and do nothing then, and when they all fuck up to kill them(there has to be an ulterior motive here). Because again even if you resummon the hero’s they have to start at level 1 and they also might not even take this seriously too.
As for me saying the pope might be less powerful than the king I think it’s valid, though they have religious power and probably their own personal army and apparent hero weapons they still don’t control the armies of the king, and the land of the king.
P.s as far as I can tell that religion seems to only in this kingdom.
As I’ve said before if he really wanted to save the world he should have done it sooner considering it is risking to do it now when waves are so powerful and there are other forces attacking them too.

Theres a Spin Off manga about Motoyasu 'restarting' back a the beginning but having all the memories of the BS he went through and the lies he was told.
Can I recommend the manga Yari no Yuusha no Yarinaoshi. It is a manga where the spear hero is actually a decent guy that isn't being manipulated by Myne the entire time.

Motoyasu did get a manga titled Reprise of the Spear Hero. He goes back in time to his summoning every time a Cardinal Hero dies.
I love all your episode analysis videos. Very detailed and actually coincides with my own opinion. (Sometimes you get things wrong because you havent read the source material, but nevertheless, great vids man)
Myne really hit the jackpot with Motoyasu. There is always a chance that none of the heroes are guillible, and yet.
In the light novel is stated that the 3 heroes, aside of naofumi, do not have any idea if how to use their weapons in a figth, there is no swordmanship, spearmanship or bowmanship involved, they just grind their stat levels and spam their SKILLS without any real strategy or awareness of the battlefield.

Loved the review!! I really enjoy seeing other people's perspectives on this especially one where anime is the first entry point. Because it can reveal new angles to perceive the plot, furthermore uncover inconsistencies that were either introduced or not. Certain scenes in previous episodes were added in the anime that were never in the books so this reveal was a bit more intense in the book than in this episode (at least as far as I can remember but please correct me if I'm wrong). But looking back on this after seeing this review I can definitely say that the anime did a good job in connecting story points and allowing for good plot progression since those added scenes provided for context that actually helped this episode. All in all, this is just my perspective on this and I look forward to seeing your reviews in the future for this series.
There's a flaw in your theory. Basically this was all set up before Naofumi ever arrived. This kingdom and the church has ALWAYS hated the shield hero which is why Mines and her dad set out to discredit the shield hero from day one. Even before the rape allegation, they minimized his abilities and sought to marginalize him. Hence, the spying and the rumor mongering in episode 1. The king and everyone knowledgeable about the cardinal weapons KNOWS the Shield Hero needs companions to level up and they purposely deny him that. They are trying to sideline him because of their faith. So, no, the pope is not "a good guy" from any point of view. He leads a religion that teaches that demihumans are little more than beasts and therefore can be subjugated. One can argue that it is the church's treatment of the Shield Hero that makes him a threat to their way of life. If they embraced him, they could have steered him to their way of thinking. Instead they made him their enemy. It makes no sense why they would only deify 3 of the weapons and demonize the Shield Hero.
Episode 18 of The rising of the shield hero was quite a good one the motoyasu chat gave me a chuckle but good grief he still dull enough to be tricked by Malty, the proper fight was pretty good seeing a combo move was cool, Naofumi blocking the blast was really great seeing more shield in use. Finding out that the pope was evil while not to surprising was nice to find out.

I agree with your assessment of Motoyasu the only thing that they aren’t showing from the LN (understandably) is that he is a little gropey with his party.
He thinks all the Girls love him and that gives him the right to ahem ‘have the odd squeeze’ and that particular feature stops him from being that loveable in the other forms of this story.

Finally, Pin head spear hero Motoyasu knows the truth. Pope was shady the entire time, but he did point out the other three hero's mistakes that Naofumi mentioned. Naofumi and company withstood Megumin's explosion caused by the church. Despite the dips in some of the animation, this was a great episode. Next episode is a huge spoiler, but at least we're getting close to grand moment that will make it all worth it.
Yes fitoria, naofumi definitely isnt trying hard enough. Clearly he is the one that doesnt want to listen. Maybe if he just says pretty please with a cherry on top theyll stop trying to frame him and make him the devil of the nation.
