Ego 56v dead battery fix

  • If you have any ego 56 volt batteries that are dead or not taking a charge it's most probably because one or few of the 18 650 batteries inside might have undercharged. They either are going to show 0.00 volts or less than 3.0 volts, which is their minimum voltage. To charge or complete their functions their minimum charge is 3.0 and Max full charge would be at 4.2. I connected a working 56v Ego battery in parallel to the other non-working batteries to give the cells inside a jump start high enough to be able to connect to their charger.

    Fixed! I did the 6 inch drop onto concrete and put the battery on the charger and amazingly it started charging. I too had the fully discharged red light on battery and it wouldn’t charge on the charger. I called ego support and it was out of warranty. Was considering the jump start thing but last ditch tried the drop and it worked. Totally stoked!

    Wow this actually worked, thank you!!
    For those asking how to wire it, just take regular 14/2 nmd90 electrical wire and touch the positive of the dead battery to the positive of the charged battery and do the same for the negatives. The back of the ego battery has 4 slots, just use the left and right most slots. Disregard the middle slots. Touching these contacts at the same time shocked the battery back to life.
    Thanks again!

      Not sure if it will work seeing as how the ego battery is 56v, but it probably will not damage the battery. You don’t have to leave them connected for long. Just a few seconds jumped mine back to life.

    You just saved me the $250 for a new 5Ah battery. Worked fine last season, then sat on the charger for a few months and suddenly, the charger wouldn't recognize it. I thought the charger failed. Gave up and bought the smaller battery locally, the 2.5ah one. Plug the new battery into the old charger and it worked fine. So now its a battery problem. Mine had 7volts across the terminals but wouldn't charge. I gave it a jump start with the new battery and boom, it started charging. Took a full charge and range seems normal. Big thank you!

    Good tip, thanks for making a video. It seems the trick is to NEVER let the Ego battery completely die. Always put it on the charger when there's some life left in it. The internal BMS should prevent this but who knows how well that design is.

    Good tip but use resistors as jumpers next time to slow down the charge. The batteries got hot because putting them in parallel like that dumps TONS of current into the dead battery. Possibly 20 amps or more! That will shorten its life significantly. To bring old lithium batteries back to life it’s best to charge them slowly by limiting the current. A pair of 100ohm 25w resistors would be my choice.

    • @roninwar9846
      @roninwar9846 2 роки тому

      is this a general concept for all lithium batteries or these particular 56 V? I have a generic Milwaukee 18 V that I think is too low and won't charge

    • @colindgrant
      @colindgrant 2 роки тому +2

      @@roninwar9846 it's the same for all lithium batteries. They have low internal resistance so charged batteries output high current and dead batteries readily accept it, whether or not they are able to actually charge up. This is different from low lead acid batteries, which sort of self-regulate the incoming current.
      In your case, this method probably won't work. 1) because the M18 packs have MOSFETs that turn off charging outside of the charger (they allow power out but not in) and 2) because in the dozen M18 batteries I've been inside, they usually have a single cell (or parallel cell group) out of the 5 total that is low, rather than the whole pack being low. Your best bet is to open the pack and try to 'balance charge' by slowly charging each cell/cell group individually to an even level, like 4v. Then with the pack balanced, put it back on the charger to let the charger determine the final charge level. Lots of videos on balance charging, make sure you watch closely and read up on the subject before attempting it.

    Thanks so much for the idea to "jump" the battery. I got a "defective" 7.5ah battery that wouldn't charge and got it charging/working with your idea. I had to cut a few thin pieces of metal (cut up a hose clamp with tin snips) for the contacts, VERY CAREFULLY inserted them, being careful not to contact/bridge them together, used a pair of car battery jumper cables, hooked the batteries together for 30 seconds and then quickly put the "defective" battery on the charger and got it to take a charge. I tried putting it on the charger previously 20 or so times and got the red "defective" light. Defective battery was only showing about 30 volts according to my multimeter. You could also just throw a 12V trickle charger on them for an hour or five to get them up from zero and then use the normal charger. I have some 20V Black & Decker batteries that were completely dead and revived by throwing a 5V charge on them for a couple hours Using an old cell phone charger. Once it has some power, the smart chargers will recognize the battery and do their thing.

    My problem is a bit odder. I have a 7.5ah battery where the cells all seem to be ok. The problem is charging.
    I get a full run on the battery in my EGO mower. When the battery is down, I put it on the high (or low) speed charger. The fan hums, the green light flashes, and then in 30 seconds or so the charger shows the batter fully charged. It obviously hasn't charged. The voltage reads around 46v. No matter how long I wait, unplug everything, etc., this won't change.
    From some other electrical experience, I tried putting the battery in the fridge or freezer for a few hours. Then I put it on the charger and all worked normally. Got the battery up to full voltage and could do a normal run with the lawn mower. This has worked several times, telling me the battery cells are likely ok. It's something else in the battery circuitry.
    EGO does not repair batteries, even if the cells are ok. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this or has any suggestions.

      I have a 7.5 amp hour battery that I got with my 21 inch push mower. Just over two months of owning it, the battery whether it's fully charged halfway or whatever will completely die when using the mower. All five of the LED lights on the battery will turn Red. They will be solid red for about 5 to 10 seconds and then shut off. At that point if I put it on the charger even though there's plenty of charge, they will still show up all red. Now, if I wait 20 minutes and then charge or start using the battery in my mower I'll have about 15 minutes of run time and then the LED lights will turn all red again.The battery was under warranty. So I'm waiting for my new battery to be shipped to me. It's been almost a month and still no battery. What a joke.

    What if my Ego charger(I have 2 of them)f/the "56 v blower" only holds SEVEN MINUTES of charge? That's for both batteries(I own a 2nd one as a backup)-and I have a card attached to the blower which says "75 minutes" of charging time or lasting power that the batteries are supposed to have, when fully charged; this has never been true, since I first owned the blower, w/the batteries, back in May of 2019. Why didn't I get a refund? Because I supposed I was so busy at the time, coupled with the fact that there just aren't any good blowers for a comparable price, that were available.
    I mean the blower does the job, it just doesn't hold the charge it is claimed to hold-not for even eight-but seven-minutes(yes I timed it repeatedly over the last 2 1/2 years since I first purchased the blower with both batteries-and the extra battery cost me $150.00(at Home Depot); I feel like I've been took but I've had the blower for too long to return it(and yes I tried to contact Ego at their headquarters, within the 1st two weeks of purchasing this blower and battery-by phone, and online as well as by mail-sent them a letter detailing the problems I was having w/the batteries-but I never, ever heard from, or got a reply, back from them)-perhaps someone who sees this can help me with my situation or problem.
    P.S: Was watching a UA-cam video which stated the battery, when fully charged is supposed to hold no less than FOURTEEN MINUTES OF CHARGE-what then, again, for both of the batteries I've had-and used-consistently-for the last two and a half years?

    This is on the 5 blinking light battery:
    1. Place battery on charger
    2. Starts charging
    3. No more than 10 minutes later, stops charging.
    4. Take battery off charger, check charge level - it hadn't even charged 1 extra bar.
    5. Place battery back on charger - begins charging.
    6. No more than 10 minutes later, stops charging.
    Basically I need to babysit the battery/charger in order to get it to continue charging.
    I've tried two different chargers and 2 different batteries - they both do the same thing. Very poorly made expensive products.
    There's a warranty on these expensive things - so I'm definitely using it.
