    That story about Prince dancing with your daughter CRUSHED me (as it seemed to do the same to you remembering it). Isn't it amazing how 1 week changes an entire life.

    Kevin, whatever your relationship, however short-lived, I'm sure if he could hear your heartfelt apology for telling that story and sendoff that Prince would be moved. And don't beat yourself up about it so much. It happened. It really is a funny story that adds to the mythology of Prince, and your love and fandom for Prince was evident throughout, even as he's driving you bonkers. Chaka proud. Chaka real proud.

    Prince was like a real life Willy Wonka meets Casanova. He was romance, spirituality, magic, mystery and raunchy sex appeal wrapped in a gifted package of pure artistry. I really appreciate your humility in readdressing your understanding of Prince, Kevin. Not a lot of people are so humble, open, and self-aware. You've given a beautiful testimony of respect and admiration for a one-of-a-kind artist. Prince was eccentric. Geniuses usually are. And you, Kevin, are a hell of a guy with a HUGE heart. :)

      If you look at the two videos of prince's top 'diva' moments or whatever you find he wasn't always so humble.. but also not as evil as Britney Spears - not that she's a comparison at all but they're both celebs..

    I'll always remember when my step-daughter first heard "Kiss" a few years ago. When he screams the lyrics at the end, she said, "He sounds like he REALLY loves to rock out to his own song." That just made me smile as I thought it was a great first introduction to a man whose music moved me for 30 years.

    I cried so hard when I heard the news. The news came with "a man down at Paisley Park" and they were not saying his name yet ... I ran from room to room crying and begging God that it wouldn't be him. I am from the Twin Cities and saw him in St Paul on December 26, 1984, his Purple Rain tour ... It was nothing short of amazing. He opened the show by saying "I am so happy to be home for Christmas and to be spending it with you !" and proceeded to play for over 3 hours (all high energy, the consummate performer) and then, he came out for not one, not two, but THREE encores. It was a magic night. He was such a huge part of my life's soundtrack, especially since we are both native Minnesotans. I loved him then and love him still. #purplereign4ever

    Just my two cents: I didn't think your story from "An Evening With Kevin Smith" was a bashing of Prince at all. When I first saw it on the original DVD, I just viewed it as a funny story about Prince...not good or bad, but just what happened I've been a Prince fan since "Soft And Wet' and I found it hilarious. Man, who was offended? To me, it just humorously reinforced who he was, a transcendent, mysterious genius you just played on the funny of it from the point of view of all the rest of us.

    I've been bursting into tears daily for the past week. Robin Williams and Prince...these 2 losses just kicked me in the teeth. I feel sad when any celeb I like passes away, but these 2...these 2 are a personal loss. I will grieve these 2 losses until I take my last breath, I think. I can't even fathom the depth of pain those who truly knew them felt and will feel.
    Rest in peace, dearly beloved. My heart broke purple.

    Thanks for this episode. You expressed so much of what I felt. I became a Prince fan in 96, when he did Emancipation. I was instantly hooked, bought every CD he ever made including singles, b-sides, imports, the lot... my music collection has always been one or two songs from this artist, a few from that one, and hundreds of Prince songs. Prince music has been the soundtrack to my life. He influenced my life so much. He was totally my patronus too. I'm glad we'll always have past Prince, but like so many other true fans, I was always eager to see who he would become next. He was a master of reinventing himself. He didn't fit neatly into any musical genre, he was a musical genre all to himself. I'm going to miss him so much!

    you guys really make my days... Prince had such an impact on my life, musically he was the ultimate artist, producer, writer and genius performer. I snuck in to see Purple Rain when I was 8 yrs old and my life changed forever, sang beautiful ones to my 1st crush and got a kiss out of it. I finally had a chance to see him perform live in Seattle in 2005 with my wife while she was 9 months preggo with our daughter. One of the greatest memories to date. Life is too short and precious to waste it, I live to share my gift with the world and Prince was the ultimate role model in that vain. Thank you guys!

As a fan of both Prince and Kevin Smith-- I loved the story about you going to his home to film the documentary. Glad you mentioned Springsteen. Saw in an interview (on MY Prince rabbit hole journey) where he said Bruce was one of his favorite band leaders, and mentioned a show of his that he watched from backstage.
    Also read a story today about Prince realizing that Purple Rain sounded a lot like Faithfully, so he called up Jonathan Cain and Neil Schon and played it for them before it was released to get their take. And of course they said go for it w/ our blessing b/c they were so impressed w/ his gesture (was a Billboard article).

    I think the story they are thinking of at 32:37 is Prince covering Radiohead. Prince covered "Creep" at Coachella years ago and performances were popping up on UA-cam and other places. Prince, being Prince, had his team pull down the videos.
    Thom Yorke from Radiohead found out and said: "Really? He's blocked it?" asked Yorke, who figured it was their song to
    block or not. "Surely we should block it. Hang on a moment." Yorke added, "Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our ... song."

    I'm 39 years old. I listened to my oldest brother's Purple Rain on vinyl in 1984 at seven- years-old and saw the film in the theater that year as well. Prince was the only music I listened to until about 1991 or so when I began listening to John Coltrane, Miles Davis, The Police and later a few others. I and I'm sure many share Kevin's sentiments. Well done and well said Mr. Smith. Great tribute.

    I'm 34. I'm black. I have listened to rock music my entire life. Somehow Prince just COMPLETELY passed me by. From perspective he was always 'old outdated" music for people older than I was. It's FASCINATING to hear all these personal testimonies about how he impacted people's lives. I honestly didn't know anyone listened to him anymore, let alone held him in high regard. I thought he was washed up.
    I really need to go and explore his catalog, now.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 8 років тому

      Well, I mean, it's weird. I think it's really a factor of a hand full of things.
      1) When I was first exposed to Prince, I was too young to get anything about him. The Batdance, for example, seemed ridiculous and silly to me. But that was because, even at many a few years younger than you, I was too young to get it.
      2)Because Prince was so adamant about not being involved in the digital era of music, he was almost absent from the grid for a number of important years.
      3)In the late 80s and 90s, Prince was almost exclusively the butt of jokes. I think maybe he was the butt of jokes for people who actually had a tremendous amount of affection for him, and thus the joking, but at my age I only saw the jokes and rarely saw the praise.
      Don't get me wrong, you always heard that he was selling out stadiums or making money, but it was in the same strata as, like, Jimmy Buffet for me. It didn't seem culturally relevant. It just seemed like what old people did.

      +JazGalaxy I like the "Little Red Corvette", so called 'dance mix' myself. I'm not sure there was any such thing at the time, but I think it's way better than the radio edit. It's on the "Ultimate" Prince album, if you're interested.

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 8 років тому

      ***** I don't think I would blame myself if I didn't like his music. I just feel like I have a massive cultural blind spot right now. There is a huge groundswell of people talking about how much he meant and I'm just like" ... really?"
      I mean, the Kevin Smith story, I think, perfectly encapsulates what I'm talking about. Kevin is apparently a huge fun but he kind of mostly just joked about Prince. (This video is very touching in how much Smith thought of him, though.)

    Kevin I think you now learning what many of us are now learning, and that's the fact the we as a people have lost someone really special in our live. I've just now seen the video on Prince's solo on my Guitar Weeps with Tom Petty at his rock n roll hall of fame ceremony. And I'm learning about all his secret humanitarian efforts a cross the world. There truly a method behind his madness

    Everyone remembers where they were the day the twin towers fell Sept 11, 2001 and everyone will remember where they were the moment Prince passed. I myself was blessed to run into him here in Mpls, Mn throughout the years and it never got old, but I cant tell you how hard I cried and the pain we all felt here in his hometown. The world lost an Icon, the music business lost a musical genius, but us here in Minnesota we lost one of our own. Please tell dude on TMZ that Prince was a genius at business because he keeps telling people how dumb he was and reality is he charged $25 for concert tickets so ALL his fans could hear the music. It was ALWAYS about the music and his fans. EVERYTHING he did was for all of us. Hugs, Sheila

      Sheila please get some perspective on this. Overly dramatizing events cheapens them.
      Prince was an exceptionally talented musician and it is very sad that he died so you young when he could have been making music and enriching lives for decades.
      But to compare his death to the murder of thousands upon thousands of innocent Americans. Not to mention the events that act of barbarism set in motion that killed
      hundreds of thousands more n Afghanistan and Iraq and Syria and other place is _unseemly_.
      I don't think Prince would want his death to be misrepresented that way.
      He lived a full life and brought happiness to other people's lives.
      In the end, I think that is all that can be asked of or for any human being.

    • @Calinks
      @Calinks 8 років тому

      +RobynHarris I dont think they were saying this death is as bad. They are saying the emotional impact it had on them was as big or similar to 9/11. The personal feeling of loss of hearing something so upsetting that you wont forget where you were when it happened. Those events stand out. The scale of the tragedies are not comparable, the feelings of sadness individuals have experienced may be. For many people, in particular many Minnesotans Prince's death left a huge impression.

      +Silly Skeleton I'm the same man, I really tried to get into Prince a good while back and it just never clicked for me, Don't get me wrong there is some really awesome music there but its just not something I'd go back to and listen to compared with other things I like. Having said that, I think Prince as a person was awesome strangely down to earth for a Rock megastar in comparison to Mick Jagger Paul McCartney etc (who I like). But I do feel a real sadness about his death when I think about it. Maybe one day I will go back and give some of his music another try. RIP

    Im living in Atlanta now and I can't believe his last show was at the Fox. I didn't get to go. Excited to go back to Minnesota this summer. I plan on going to First Ave. I used to go to glam slam and the quest. Im also planning on visiting Paisley Park. Pay my respects at the fence line.
