They did. Just not in front of us in fear of loose lips damaging their labels. Each's fan's hated each other. Even though both's music were 2 sides of the same coin.
He didn’t want to be by Michael though. Prince also wanted a sound stage by himself while all the other singers were altogether. Prince did let his ego get the better of him on that one. Michael & Lionel Richie wrote the song. Lionel talks about it on youtube.

@Eph_loves_80s winsbeyond82 didn't "put them in the same box." If someone's opinion were "Music is not the same without Prince and INXS" that's not in the same box. It's just a comment about two of the most talented & loved artists of the 80's. Why is everyone triggered so easily these days anyway?? It's boooring! I do miss the 80's. I grew up in that time. Concerts were a free-for-all blast from hell, people could take a joke, & people could actually talk & truly take a joke.....without being called politically incorrect, a bully, racist, etc. And nit-picking every casual comment. P.S. Ok we all get it, you're obsessed with both Prince's & Michael Jackson's hair. Geez what is the deal lol.....🙄
Yeah and what is so great about that is you can Always find just what mood or vibe your feeling in both, satisfaction guaranteed and I haven't found either one Io be a phase. They are always with me, thanks to both of you for the passion 💜🖤

@@ronaldnelson6692 how did Michael push Prince? Michael released an album every four years while alive where as Prince would release one yearly, sometimes more than one (in 1998 he released 3, one with five discs). One was a workaholic perfectionist where as the other one who was a perfectionist who took his time making sure each song was perfect, plus Michael not writing all of his own songs he had to wait for songs where as Prince wrote 98% of his own material. They also didn’t even have the same sound or style, Prince couldn’t do a Michael Jackson song and Michael would never do a Prince song because most of them are very sexually explicit and MJ was always child friendly with his music.
Ummm...maybe because Prince was absolutely brilliant ~ a musical genius, writer of lyrics and music, artist, performer, dancer, producer, could play any instrument he was handed ~ he had raw talent!! MJ was a good singer and dancer. Yes, MJ had talent, but he didn't have the edge like Prince did. Prince was a god of music...not just a king of pop!!
A Rivalry doesn’t have to be negative. It could be like 2 Quarterbacks trying to throw the most touchdowns in the regular season. It can be something to push you forward.
Prince and Micheal situation was different. They were the first black Mega-Stars. There wasn't many around back then. So the media hyped that rivalry. But I've seen documentaries where George Michael's main objective was to out Prince and Michael. They were all competitive with each other.
the friendship of two geniuses can be a deeply complex thing. the word 'competitive' really minimises the relationship, you feed from and fuel each other, you lose sight of yourself in their presence and vis-versa, it can be turmoil, but it's never not love.
True prince could play the instruments, bur micheal didnt need that. He was a showman, entertainer, his mic might not yave been on but he gave hos movements with no HESI do
Prince saying "It's our journey and not something for a non-musical person to compare and say it's not as good as..." is spot on. These two were just creating the best art they could conceive at the time, there really is no comparison.
Growing up in the 80s seems like it was such a unique and special experience that no other generation before or after has ever experienced. I grew up in the 90s but I have so much love for the 80s and acknowledge that when it comes to music and pop culture, the 80s is #1. I have nostalgia for the 80s even though I didn't grow up in that era but as a 90s kid I definitely saw the 80s influences and thankfully some of the culture lived on through the 90s so I got to experience it that way.❤
@@JazzyB9481 so true. I was born in the early 80s and as a small child, artists like MJ and Kate Bush deeply touched my heart. Although some songs and concerts were a bit before my time, they were still televised and we made video tapes, which I watched over and over. However, I really would have loved to be there in the 60s and early 70s, musically. I would have loved to see all the soul greats like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, BB King, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, and so on. Also, Led Zeppelin. OMG! That would have been so cool to see them live. And, 80s fashion was kind of unflattering on most people. I remember mostly seeing badly designed/painfully colourful and unflatteringly shaped woollen and thick cotton sweaters with dumb patterns on them, and jeans that made people's bums look flat. Lol. I remember not liking my clothing options as a child as well as thinking my older brother looked absolutely ridiculous in his MC Hammer pants. Fashion of the 50s, 60s and 70s looks cooler in my opinion. Also, in this era where we are right now, all countries are influenced by all countries and all eras at the same time, so anyone can wear anything they want and people come up with their own unique styles that fit their personality and that's how it should be really :)
Me too, I'm an 80's kid. We got to watch these amazing performers' legendary rise to fame, and become icons! The music we got to experience.....man, legendary, and we got to experience everything as it happened, whether legendary music coming out, or legendary music videos coming on TV....we were so lucky to witness everything Michael and Prince came out with! And so many other phenomenal artists that became legends! 🥰
These two were equally phenomenal and privately had great respect for each other as super talents...period. NOW we only have their interviews, video's, movies and incredible songs to remember them by. Let's NEVER forget what gifts they gave to us all throughout the year's. ❤
Prince was a phenomenal musician and Michael Jackson was a phenomenal entertainer. I've seen both artists in concert and Prince entertained me but Michael captivated me. There will never be another of these two. I'll always be a fan of Prince and an ultra fan of Michael Jackson the "KING OF POP "!
yeah Michael sometimes claimed Prince was mean to him. Maybe Prince just didn't want to be... associated with what Michael was up to at Neverland ranch...
I love Prince but I hate that people are so dismissive of MJ's producing, vocal arrangement, songwriting, and pure talent. He's not JUST an entertainer. MJ will always be my #1 pick...always. R.I.P. The King & The Prince 💜❤️💜
They are both great , I think Mike is a better entertainer but Prince played over 60 instruments and was a one man band. Mic might of been good at a lot of different things but Prince literally was great at everything. Respectfully I’m taking Prince.
I don't think people dismiss his musical contributions, it's more of the fact that Michael always had the greatest producers and songwriters backing him while Prince refused the greatest producers and songwriters because he chose to play the instruments, produce the songs and even engineer them himself. Michael was the superior dancer, live entertainer and vocalist while Prince was an all around complete musician and argued as 1 of the greatest guitarists. Prince produced and wrote for so many artists and hit songs that people didn't even know he wrote. They are equal in talent level, just in their own respective arenas. Check the credits for Prince's first 4 albums, and he's basically the only name listed for every credit.
I’m not reading this comment in context of a comparison to Prince. I don’t think anyone would argue that Michael Jackson did as much as the production work as prince but the way this video implies Michael was just an entertainer is disrespectful regardless of what prince did
I think that Michael and Prince respected each others and that they were no enemies. I also think that the media would have liked the narrative that they were enemies. Michael always respected other artists.

The last part was so moving, you're not the same without your rival, A Rival brings out the best in you and somehow he's greater than anybody in your life on a deeper level.
That's all a RIVALRY is. There CAN'T be a true rivalry between unmatched forces. All jealousy is is a begrudging admiration for it's focus; a mixture of both love and hate.
You can't say you love Mj and not have a respect for Prince and vice versa. The people who truly love their music . TRULY LOVE MUSIC. and the range and creativity between the two of them was awe-inspiring, no matter what side you prefer.

That is so profound to me. Prince and Michael stayed so quiet about their relationship the whole time, only showing what they wanted us to see. They had complete control over how the world perceived them two together. It seems like that’s how they best connected…through rivalry or competition. That was probably the way they showed respect to one another. They are fucking geniuses man!!!! The ending almost put me to tears. I had no idea any of this happened!

They were very good friends, at the same time competitive with all good intentions and respect. People need to realize that only Michael & Prince knew each other well enough they had so much in common talent wise, and life wise. They both had very rough childhoods, both barely had a childhood, both were physically abused, harassed, insulted, both were exposed to inappropriate sexual behaviors. This is why, Prince always defended Michael because celebs and the public didn’t know him like the way Prince knew Michael on a very personal level. Their friendship was golden. And I miss them both very much.
They weren't friends they were competitors who pushed each other back and fourth. Stop throwing around this false rumor that they were friends, Prince didn't even attend Michaels funeral.
Amen to that, the were friends for live till dead. And the both gone to soon. MJ was the first and the best singer and performer ever, and Prince new that, and Prince did it great with hiss songs, more then great. I don't think Prince gets enough credit for his acting in Purple Rain, his performance felt real and genuine, he was naturally gifted but he worked hard as hell to hone his gifts.
Totally agree!!!! even tough he was praised by many critics back then, he was compared to Marlon Brandon on the Wild One and Purple Rain the movie was on most film critics lists of top 10 films of 1984, still today many see his performance as an extension of himself, because Prince persona is very cultural establish, but definitely Prince went were none other Rock star dared to go, to be honest about himself, every single question people had about him during the rest of his career he answered right there on that 1984 film, from his insecurities, his family freak show, his sexual ambiguity, his ego and even his mean side and still he managed to be likeable, electrifying and beautiful. He really deserved Oscar for best actor nomination.

The pseudo-rivalry between Prince and Michael was media created. I never believed there was anything personal between these two megastars. They were both musical and entertainment geniuses. But they had very different audiences for the most part, even though I personally love both of them to death! What would they be competing against each other for? I think it was Akin to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, where their rivalry made them hungry to topple the other wich in turn led to some resentment at the time but I think both respected eachother as artists, it created some memorable moments in entertainment history.

Prince locking himself in his room for days after MJ passing clearly shows how much he actually respects Micheal. He probably let his ego slide for awhile and knew how much his rivalry with him hit a brick wall.. keep your friends close, but your enemies closer
Listen I'm not a prince fan at all. But I don't think Prince ever thought Micheal was his enemy though. Prince didn't like Michael for whatever reasons and really got ticked when people compared him to Micheal. But Micheal was always kind to him and that's not something you forget.
I moved to chanhassen from Australia in 1980. We lived on "Crestview drive." It was a bike ride away from Princes house. My mother took me, my four sisters and a local mentally handicapped girl (about 6 foot 5 inches tall) to the Michael Jackson "Bad" tour in Minneapolis. The nostalgia is intoxicating! 🙏😌
The brightest lights burn too fast. Michael won my heart since his earliest years - but it deprived him of a childhood and affected his whole life. Prince was an incredibly talented writer, instrumentalist-musician and entertainer, with a bit of an outsized ego, but he had to fight for recognition rather than being thrust in. Both of them earned the right to their eccentricity and were mutual admirers who were afraid of each other! I miss them both.
I would not say that Michael "earned" his way to being 'eccentric' in the ways he... tried reclaiming some odd parts of his "lost childhood" at Neverland ranch... Prince had a tough relationship with his father too, but still left us with more songs still in his "vault" than Michael ever participated in creating.
@@williestyle35 Michael wrote hundreds of songs. He just didn't produce or record all of them. Quincy said Michael would write hundreds of songs for every album but released only the best ones.

@The Complaining Channel That's because when we see someone attractive, our brains release neurotransmitters associated with pleasure. Wow, the ending touched my soul, I am literally in tears, Who would've thought, I'm so happy to have grown up in the era of two musical geniuses. The reality of this is Prince actually admired Michael and wanted to achieve the same level of success. This is such a fantastic video. I’m sure it took exhaustive research to splice all these old interviews into one coherent narrative about their rivalry. Very well done. Someone should turn this into a Hollywood movie. The Prince v The King.
Of course - he wrote he was one of the greatest guitarists to ever strap one on - he sang he danced he produced - just think of all the hits he wrote for other people! I loved Michael as a performer but there will never b another Prince
Can’t replace Prince. His music is life-altering and unreal! And he did it all by himself! He’s on a whole other level. People have a sentimental love for MJ but Prince did everything better all by himself. That’s unheard of. Also, it’s stupid that people get so offended when someone says Prince is better. It’s as though they’re in a cult. The adoration for Michael doesn’t make him better. Ability trumps your feelings.
These two guys had a big influence on my life growing up and their music saw me through some really difficult times. We just don't see true artists of their calibre anymore. Thanks for a great video, their 'rivalry' made me laugh and then the end - to hear of Prince's grief - was truly touching. 💜
Both were geniuses and are legendary artists with traits that set them apart. If we're talking about sheer instrumentalism, it's not a comparison. Prince could write, play, produce, and do everything on his own. He was also an incredible performer as much as Michael. Michael's strength was his ability to collaborate, conceptualism, dancing, and singing. At his peak, Thriller and Dangerous, I can't think of a greater pop vocalist. His voice was an instrument. And though Prince could dance extremely well and do the splits, like James Brown, Michael knew how to turn it up to another level. Again, at his peak, Michael danced as brilliantly as Prince played guitar. There's no need to pick one over the other. They were both phenomenal.
It's unfortunate they felt the pressures of being compared because they were two very talented artists with two different artistically creative approaches. How devastating that we couldn't witness the art of the two merged together because of ulterior motives conjured up by the media. I feel Prince fell and played into it more than Michael. I believe Michael genuinely wanted to work with him and possibly form a friendship. Prince didn't want to.
@@mauve3734 Stevie was a one man band too and an innovator like Prince. Piano, Synthesizers, Drums, more recently the Harpeji, and is one of if not the greatest Chromatic Harmonica player of alltime. He also had a key role is the development of weighted keyboards, and synthesizers. Arguably the most influential synth bass player of his era. He was a prodigy and is one of the greatest singers, songwriters and composers there has ever been. Stevie and Prince are two of the greatest musicians of alltime and thats only one aspect of their greatness.
I can only imagine what those dark days locked in his room felt for Prince. Reminds me of that scene in Cadillac Records when Muddy Waters runs upstairs to the bathroom and starts crying when Little Walter was killed. Just speaks volumes of their rival friendship. Now they’re together spiritually making the biggest hit we will never hear. The world misses you both! RIP KING & PRINCE ❤️💜
Morris Day nails it: Michael was phenomenal as a singer and performer. But Prince was a savant who could do literally anything. Sing, dance, act, produce, write and compose, slay the guitar, play dozens of instruments, start his own studio, great band leader, unmatched live performer, develop other artists, and on and on. No comparison really.
It actually doesn't end there. Bruce Lee said "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." So, you can't just say someone who does more is inherently better because of that. Given that MJ focused on entertaining as a singer/dancer/showman means, he can critique those aspects of his act while allowing another talent to give him a production, lyrics, etc, when best. There's been many, many like that before.
Both artists were amazing and talented. Prince was a tremendous musician of all time, and yes, he was versatile, but Michael's dance techniques were just phenomenal. Loved them both.❤
There's just nobody like Mike, his voice was unique, dancing unique, performance phenomenal, let's not forget he produced most of his own songs including Billie Jean and Beat it, he directed his visuals. I hate that people (especially Prince fans) try to chalk off Michael's talents as simply being an "entertainer," the man had a wider range of talent that just being mechanically gifted in playing instruments. He brought in the visual, the audio, the physical through dance, the fashion and the persona (through how he conducted himself publicly). the man was a phenomenon felt all over the world, the most popular man around, that's beyond talent
@@evem2841 Lot of truth here. Not to take anything away from Prince, but the 'MJ the Entertainer' narrative is false. Listen to "Wanna be starting something" - Michael wrote everything on there. That song has like 5 different hooks. He was not only one of the greatest vocalists of all time, he was an incredible songwriter and producer yet always stepped aside for anyone with a good idea or skill, wether it was Quincy, Bruce, the guys from Toto, Eddie van Halen or whomever. Real creative genius is knowing when not to let your ego cloud the end result.
I saw Prince at a Rolling Stone concert. He was the warm up act for a heavy lineup. It was 1981 LA no one had ever heard of him. So he shows up in a purple Frock Coat snd a white Victorian blouse and people were just impatient so they started throwing stuff at him. I understand it happened the first night and he wore something more provocative. He called Mick Jeager who had hired Prince after seeing him perform, gonna tell him he’s not ok no big back the next night. So Mick says hey I thought you want wanted to be a rock star, you gonna give up just because of THAT? Prince played and that was the one I was at. He was good but the crowd got roudy!
MJ was able to be played around the entire family. Prince was the rated R borderline guy for adults. I bet you they both understood each other very well before they past. When you're a mogul in the music industry like them there's always a price to pay. 2 guys from the mid west deserves a lot of respect for what they've done in our time.
How incredibly well put together. Comprehensive, yet still gets right to the meat in each of these instances. Perfect selections. Paired nicely with the perfect interviews. Great video. Knockout job.
Let's be honest a lot of yall in these comments are major Michael Jackson fanatics which is fine because I equally love MJ and Prince the same. But I feel like if everyone can step away from being so biased and choosing sides and take time to really look at both of them and their artistry, we can stop comparing them. MJ wasn't better than Prince and vice versa, but I will say I do look at Prince differently than I do MJ because he was writing, producing, arranging, and playing all the instruments on his albums. There wasn't a Quincy Jones or anyone else guiding him or helping him, and Prince was still able to compete with the likes of MJ and Madonna. So we need to give both of them their flowers because they were both very talented, influential people.
Mj was doing all of that too aside from playing instruments live. His voice was his instrument. He literally built all his hit songs beatboxing and layering his vocals. To me that takes just as much talent to do. And all of MJ’s biggest hits were written by himself. I love princes music as well but sonically Mj was just in his own lane even after Quincy.
Yes its an MJ fan channel so I can definitely see the bias as a Prince fan. I agree with everything you said. They both deserve all the praise and admiration they received in life and now in death. To me Prince took it to another level because he literally was a one man band. He did it ALL. He could be in the studio alone and come out with a hit from his own making. He also like MJ arrange the music in his head, but since he was able to play the actual instruments he knew exactly how they would sound. Beatboxing to me is just an approximation of what the music "could" sound like. Prince also was more diverse in terms of genre in that he played Pop, R&B, Rock N Roll, Jazz, Gospel, Funk, even Techno! he would sometimes do different genres in the same song! Just AMAZING!
But Prince fans aren’t biased ? MJ is inducted into the songwriters hall of fame for his songwriting since 2002, Prince is not even on it. Mr I did everything on my own isn’t on it, because he didn’t do everything, he had the Revolution with him during 1999, Purple Rain, Parade and he had the New Power Generation in the 90s. This argument doesn’t hold up well.
@@thrill82j Prince not being in the SWHOF is a travesty and a major oversight on their part. He wrote more songs than the Beatles. He was supposed to be inducted after his death, but Nile Rogers the chairman of the SWHOF must have something against Prince, because you and I both know he deserves to be in there. There was talk of removing MJ from the SWHOF because the child molestation allegations against him. The Revolution and the New Power Generation did not write ANY of those songs, Prince wrote ALL of them he was just giving them billing with him because they were his band.

People (like the Media and some Fans):like to say there was this huge rivalry but those close to Prince and Michael said that they both had respect for one another.
I _TOTALLY_ agree, @Mecha Jay. It was _the media_ who made up this so-called “rivalry” between _Prince_ and Michael, in the first place. In various “fan” magazines such as “ _Right On,_ ” for example. Notice, too, that each of the segments taken from different interviews -- done with various other people who had either met Prince and Michael or knew quite a bit about both of them, even interviews with both Michael and _Prince_ themselves -- has his/her/“their” own personal viewpoint concerning this “rivalry,” and whether or not it ever existed at all. So, I choose to believe that they each respected one another; They were friendly towards one another, personally, yet _extremely_ competitive, when it came to their music and their overall professional careers as a whole.
I _TOTALLY_ agree with you, @Mecha Jay. This so-called “rivalry” between _Prince_ and Michael started with the media -- through stories in “fan” magazines like “ _Right On_ ” and other printed publications, for example -- stories that the media and the public have _kept_ on perpetuating for over some 40 years and then some. The various interview segments shown in this Video (with other celebrities who had either personally known and/or professionally worked with each of them [ _respectively_ ] for a long time, were family members [like Michael’s siblings, his older sister, _LaToya,_ and younger brother, _Randy_ ] or were those who had recently met one or the other in person, maybe even having met _BOTH_ of these great artists at the same time, whatever the case may have been at that point) vary in personal opinion, somewhat, as to whether or not there was _ANY_ so-called “rivalry” between _Prince_ and Michael. I _truly_ believe that _NO_ such “rivalry” had ever happened, whether personally or professionally. The whole thing was _completely_ made-up and media-driven, to stir up the feelings and emotions of most of the fans in their separate fan-bases. Those who are _exclusively_ fans of _either Prince OR Michael_ absolutely _CANNOT_ /WILL _NOT_ ever bring themselves to listen to _ALL_ of whatever songs, albums, Demos of songs, etc., that were and _are_ already released, and giving a fair chance to the one “opposite of” whose music they _claim_ to like so much. Nor will such exclusive “fans” watch any Video content, released concert footage or T.V. shows featuring _Prince_ if they “only” like Michael, nor any such media material featuring Michael if they are exclusively into _Prince._ The actual separate “fan”-bases seem to be and are _WAY_ more into this “competition,” “comparison” and “rivalry” thing than the artists _truly_ ever were in their whole entire careers.
Michael is the one who planted the story of a rivalry between him and prince because Michael loved playing with the media and these two both played into it
It's hard to imagine both my favourite artists are gone. I can't even discuss it. It's too painful. I appreciate the sheer genius of both of these beautiful people. Rest in power, my brothers.
loved MJ as a kid then grew up having Prince as my favorite artist ever, both of them are legends that can never be compared or replaced. The 2 greatest musicians and entertainers in history
Prince was an extremely talented artist - undisputed. Michael Jackson is up there with the biggest artists of all time (Beatles, Elvis, Tina, Cher). The longevity of his career is unrivaled (child to adult). Prince brought the drama and and can't deny he felt the need to literally 'show his ass' onstage to build his career. I will never forget an ill Sammy Davis at his tribute concert and the look in his eyes and reaction to 'You Were There' by Michael Jackson. He lept on that stage, hugged Michael, and expressed Thank You is the most heartfelt manner. In entertainment (like most things), there are levels.
Dude Tina and cher?? Common man, Whitney Houston and Madonna are way bigger. Beatles, Elvis, MJ would be on the 1 line......prince, madonna, whiney houston, George Michaels on the 2 line.

This was a great segment. There’s a very strange thing that happens when someone you are profoundly connected to dies, in some very odd way, your fear of death diminishes and you live a more free existence. I think Prince felt something similar with Michaels passing.

@@camleep Wat do u mean RIP CHRIS ROCK? When did he die
I never understood how there could be a rivalry. They were both very different kinds of artists. Both absolute legends in their own rights.

You can’t compare the two. But you can’t ignore the fact that Prince could play any instrument you put in front of him and did it all literally

Michael Jackson had something to prove to himself and his terrible father. That fueled him. MJ along with his own ego fueled Prince.

Prince childhood affected him as well
I would not say that Michael "earned" his way to being 'eccentric' in the ways he... tried reclaiming some odd parts of his "lost childhood" at Neverland ranch...
Prince had a tough relationship with his father too, but still left us with more songs still in his "vault" than Michael ever participated in creating.

Hello Sarah,how are you doing?

I believe Michael was the greatest performer of all time but prince was the greatest musician
Stevie wonder

He also had a key role is the development of weighted keyboards, and synthesizers. Arguably the most influential synth bass player of his era. He was a prodigy and is one of the greatest singers, songwriters and composers there has ever been. Stevie and Prince are two of the greatest musicians of alltime and thats only one aspect of their greatness.
Man I love these guys. Definitely defined an era in music. Rest in Peace to them both.
RIP to both legends, the world is endlessly poorer and more divided without them.
Yessssssssssssss.
Hopefully they have reincarnated and are both two little talented kids running around out here somewhere by now.
Bruce Lee said
"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
So, you can't just say someone who does more is inherently better because of that. Given that MJ focused on entertaining as a singer/dancer/showman means, he can critique those aspects of his act while allowing another talent to give him a production, lyrics, etc, when best. There's been many, many like that before.
both were queer - one a pedophile
Yes that was a legendary night.
Nope Michael is better than Prince. A King beats a Prince. End of story have a nice day 😊
But Prince fans aren’t biased ?
This was well done. Not capitalizing on drama, but highlighting a competitive, and sincere friendship.
