    At 2:47 Siri said that she hasn't ate much lately and she doesn't eat much/have a small appetite. :)

    My level of Cantonese is basic but I think my pronunciation is good enough for Siri to understand me. I may not understand her replies, though, haha.

    About the weather, im not exactly sure what she is saying sounds like some sort of witty pop culture response before the weather forecast answer of not good weather, i written what it might sound like in the brackets but im not sure exactly sure what it means
    唔係來自(王家將書/黃嘉俊書)不過天氣唔好
    Siri, what do you like to eat?
    最近到冇乜點食嘢,我好細食 (recently, havent really been eating things, I eat very little)
    Am I busy tommorrow?
    ok呢個係你個活動 (ok, this is your activity)

    This was a great vid, I hope you will produce/post more--maybe one w/ Isaiah speaking Cantonese w/ Jordan or w/ Steve's parents? Or Jordan ordering food in Cantonese at a Chinese restaurant, while Steve pretends he's unable to speak a lick of Cantonese.

      Hey Beardan! Yeah, I keep meaning to make an update but there's always something else to do! I'm getting more comfortable speaking, but this year I've been focusing on reading so my vocab isn't improving too much. I did start a blog, though, so feel free to check it out. It's about living in Hong Kong and learning Canto. eggtartjourney.blogspot.hk/

      I only started using Siri recently anyway, and it kept switching to Canto, so I just ended up leaving it.

    BTW when Jordan said "Call mom" Siri understood it and said that she couldn't find "媽媽" in your contacts cause you probably have it as "Mom" instead of "媽媽". So I'd say it was a tie.

    2:47 - zeoi3 gan6 dou1 mou5 mat1 dim5 sik6 je6. "Zeoi3 gan6" means "recently" as in Nei5 zeoi3 gan6 dim2 aa3? How are you recently?
    3:14 - ne1 go3 hai6 nei5 go3 wuk6 dung6. "Wuk6 dung6" means activity. Just as "dung6 ci4" means "verb" and "hang4 dung6" means "to act/operate", "dung6" (動) refers to "action".
    4:43 - Ji5 haa6 hai6 gaau1 tung1 cing4 fong3. "Ji5 haa6" means "below". "Gaau1 tung1" means "transports". "Cing4 fong3" means "situation".
    4:57 - I think it's better to say: Ting1 jat6 ngo5 hou2 zou2 hei2 san1 instead of hei2 zo2. Naau6 zung1 or naau6 biu1 I think are better terms for alarm.
    "Calendar" is "jat6 lik6".
    If you ask Siri "Dou6 hong4", she will ask you where you want to go.

      In case you don't know Jyutping, I'll translate this using English Phonetics (try your best to read it using English pronunciation rules).
      - Juy Gun Doe Moe Mutt Deem Sick Yeah. Juy means "Most". Gun means "Close", so combined means "Most Recently". Moe means "To Not Have" while Mutt means "What amount", in this context, so Moe Mutt means Not have a lot. Sick Yeah means "To eat". So combined, it's, "Recently, I haven't eaten much at all."
      - Nay Gaw Hai Nay Gaw Woot Dong. Nay Gaw means "This". Hai Nay Gaw means "is your". Woot Dong means "activities". So combined it's "This is your activities"
      - Jee Ha Hai Gow Tong Ching Fong. Jee Ha means "The following". Gow Tong means "Traffic". Ching Fong means situation. So it fully means "The following is the traffic situation"
      - Ting Yut Ngaw Hoe Joe Hay Sun instead of Hay Joe. Now Jong (I actually say Now with an L, maybe you do too) is better for alarm. Now means Loud or Yelling.

    • @Oolongcaa
      @Oolongcaa 6 років тому

      Great and more in-depth information. I'm not familiar with English phonetics so it's interesting to see it written in a different way.
      Trying to understand the different characters on their own helps so much in understanding as I find that Chinese words are often derived from other words such as the above example "Zeoi6 gan3" explained by kentalot. Another example would be "volcano" which exists of the characters fo5 火 and saan1 山 which translated to "fire mountain".
      Regarding the "l" and "n" sounds. I grew up with pronouncing with "l" but recently I am spending more effort in pronouncing with "n". I would often still use both though.

    Alarm is not "bill" though. It should be "Loud Chung". : )

    Surprised the wife is actually that good in Cantonese without a teacher that doesn't have an accent teaching her. Cantonese is one of the hardest languages to learn if you are not a native speaker.

    I don't want to make a comment on siri because I can differently speak Cantonese way better than her but missed you 2 badly , my dear Cantonese friend , PS two 1/2(half) Cantonese = a whole Cantonese ha ha

  • @wailung000
    @wailung000 6 років тому

    I wanted to say this before, it's not that your cantonese is worse, after watching some of your videos, it's because you have taisanese mixed in without you even realizing, my wife is like that when she speaks Cantonese. There's a distinct difference in sound between ABC and Chinese mixed dialects sounds.
