Hope you all enjoyed this dialogue! It was a lot of fun to put together!
Thank you Steve and Jordan for inviting me to make this video, it was so fun! I definitely feel like videos like this will help keep the Cantonese language alive. Let’s both 加油 with our studies! Also, thank you everyone for your nice comments, they make me really happy ^^
It was really fun chatting with you! Thank you for your time!
The reason you sometimes don't get a reaction is b/c we keep those reactions inside, but we are THINKING IT! The younger guys especially, the facial expressions will be mute and contained. You will get more of a reaction from Chinese females. So nothing that you were doing, it was our culture to contain our feelings.
Grace, as you know....I am subscribed to you and LOVE your videos. All the praises, recognitions and kudos that you get, you totally deserve EVERY BIT of it. You've earned it! I am so delighted to watch your videos. Language opens up doors....you gain new respect, friends, culture, etc.
@@proudasiangirl576 Thank you so much for all your comments and support!
From Hong Kong here.
Grace's Cantonese is simply gorgeous and stunning!
I particularly like how she can grasp the rhythm of Cantonese.
It was fun to dialogue with her! Thanks for watching!
Before I went to visit China on tour I tried to learn Mandarin via cds and my roommate who is chinese. It’s very difficult. after coming back I have stopped trying to learn. Problem with this virus keeps us from traveling to China but hearing you guys trying to speak Cantonese learn chinese makes me want to try and pick it up again. You and Steve are inspirational
Wow, Grace's story around learning Cantonese is very similar to how I learned Spanish growing up. It's absolutely awesome that you bring in others who are also on the journey of learning, and teaching, Cantonese. You guys showcasing people like Grace, Sue Margeurite and Mtz Cherry demonstrates your own humility. It will take people like you to keep both the language and surrounding culture alive. Plus, seeing Steve and Jordan working together give people like my wife encouragement in their own language learning.
Quite importantly, your candid conversation points out an unusual element of culture in general - the expectations we're taught to have of others based on their appearance (in America, at least and especially). As an American born Chinese person myself, I was also shocked at Grace's ability to speak Cantonese. In the opening seconds of the video, my jaw dropped. Grace's level of fluency waaaaaay outpaces mine. She's able to smoothly and naturally hold a casual convo with you two. I can't speak a single complete and coherent sentence, and my tones are frequently off. The weird thing about that is seeing a black person speak with high fluency in Japanese is pretty commonplace for me 🤣. As Steve aptly said, the fact that Grace is capable of learning Cantonese on such a high level isn't at all surprising or shocking. It's that Grace was interested enough in Cantonese that it drove her to achieve such a high skill level that's shocking to me. I've never met someone from Grace's ethnic group that was even remotely interested.
While making this video might have been a cool and fun project for you to make, I think it may have a very profound and positive impact on the future and survival of Cantonese as a spoken language.
My family loves your channel. It makes my heart happy seeing your work! Keep it up!
Thank you for your insightful comments! Yes, hopefully videos like these help keep the Cantonese culture alive!
UA-cam brought me here because I follow Grace’s channel. I really appreciate Jordan that she is willing to learn Cantonese for the communication with Steve’s grandmother. 👍🏻👍🏻
That was awesome to see.
Grace, keep it up - you’re amazing
Cantonese couple - glad you guys are back!
Thanks!
Wow, Grace's Cantonese is very fluent! Keep it up! :-)
I enjoyed it pretty much. Seeing different ethnic groups and cultures come together especially through the language medium is awesome. Videos like these is what motivate many to keep chugging along in their journey to fluency. Cantonese is fun and colorful and as long as there is interest it will stay alive and kicking.
Thanks for watching!
Great collaboration, more if possible.
So happy to see this video !!!
Hello From Paris 👋
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
Grace speaks cantonese very well. 👍👍👍
Steve, Jordan and Grace, you guys are a rare Gem and your contents really brought us multicultural closer together. You guys are really inspiring and please keep up the good work and produces more collaboration contents. I encourage you guys to go and speak Cantonese as much as possible because that is how you can retain it and improve on it. Maybe the next challenge is to speak only Cantonese for a week lol
Only Cantonese for a week haha?! Sounds difficult!
Hello, I just found your channel. I speak Cantonese since I was born.
This is the best video you guys ever made--Grace is awesome!
Thank you!
Thanks for the support!
Grace, her Cantonese is better than mine!!!!
Steve, I want to acknowledge that learning a language takes the same amount of hard work regardless of your race. I'm equally impressed with all 3 of you. 加油!
Thanks!
Great to see all of you engaging in a Canto conversation. As with any language we all need practice, practice, practice. I encourage you to keep it up. Just a minor suggestion...more English subtitles are needed for the non-Canto folks.
Thanks for the suggestion! We tried the best we could! It takes a long time which is something we don’t have with 3 kids haha.
@@CantoneseCouple I can certainly understand as I edit our online church services each week since the COVID pandemic started and I have two young ladies who are very self-sufficient.
You both were awesome.
Thanks!
I watched her video before. She taught how to make chocolate cake in Cantonese. The words that she used was very local and updated.
Very impressive!
How are you two doing in 2023?
My favourite YT'ers where are you?!! =) More videos pls!!
Stay tuned!!
Wow, Grace's Cantonese is impressive. I like conversations in another languages, where people struggling in an adoring way.
Thanks for watching 👍
Yes Grace cantonese is very good 👍
👍
Definitely watch more Chinese tv programs and you will a lot more. Anyway love your channel guys
Thank you!
Amazing! She can speak well in Cantonese.
Thanks!
Very interesting video , you guys should definitely visit Hong Kong sometime in the future :)
We hope to visit one day!
I'm impressed by her Cantonese. It must great being able to communicate with loved ones in multiple languages
It's great being able to speak to all of Steve's family!
That's really impressive for someone that only started learning the language as an adult with no prior background. I grew up in a Cantonese household but she can definitely speak better than me. And it's true, no one cares when an Asian person speaks fluent English because it's so predominant. For Chinese people, their jaws drop whenever a non-Asian person converses in Cantonese or Mandarin, it's like finding a needle in a haystack for them. I had a similar visceral reaction when I first listened to a Chinese guy and a white guy speak fluent Jamaican patois because there's this instant disconnect of their voices not matching their faces, lol.
Next video...
Chinese guy speaks perfect English!
Hi Steve & Jordan! You guys must be very busy. Looking SO forward to your next video!! :)
New videos coming soon! Now that school has started we need to get into a new routine!
@@CantoneseCoupleCan't wait! I was thinking about you guys today! Very happy that you are all safe & healthy! :)
You need to go to HK, where you have all sorts of ethnicities speaking Cantonese, it having been the every day spoken language, it's where I first met Indians, (nick named, Singh) that were fluent in Cantonese, now Mandarin, having been taught in every day schools is becoming more and more common. But growing up here in NZ, a few Chinese couples of the '50's & '60's adopted local Polynesian children and taught them their own Cantonese dialects or Chinese men married local Polynesian women and their children were taught Cantonese.
Thanks for the insights!
Wow.... Canto Couple should do more canto videos with Guresu!! she's like at 75% level already.... just amazing!! I think the main reason why it's such a shocker to see/hear non-Asians speaking Chinese is that it's just very very rare!! Ppl would wonder how/why they could speak it so well... travel/cultrual experience? business? and it's got to do with the environment too! When I was in Taiwan, it wasn't that much of a shock to locals seeing white ppl speak Mandarin simply because these expats gotta know some Mandarin to get around...
This video was a lot of fun!
好多謝你哋!
hou2 do1 ze6 nei5 dei6!
👍👍👍 thanks for watching!
Awesome! 加油!
Thanks!
Guresu's Guangdong wah is very good!
👍👍👍
I would like to speak like her.
On call 36 hours! Yes!
My favourite show! Haha
How about watching Cantonese movies and Cantonese songs?
Grace is very good.
Agreed!!!
Hey cantonese couple check out carlos douh, he hasn't posted for many years now, but his cantonese is outstanding and he teaches a lot of hong kong slang.
Wow quite good
Thanks!
I am a little hard of hearing so trying to hear tones is more difficult
After living in Japan I learned enough Japanese to travel. Took classes
Also some people are more talented in learning a foreign language than others
She's the female version of laushu
Haha! She needs to start making videos ordering at restaurants!
@@CantoneseCouple Hahaha, maybe in the future!
Man brotha, you are so LUCKY to have such a beautiful wife who's white and speak Cantonese.
Not lucky! BLESSED!!!
Grace's pronunciation is spot on.
Steve, I find it unusual that you refer to your kids as "little friends".
I agree with Jordan that it's less of a rarity that "foreigners" don't speak English because it is spoken around the world. However, I am usually surprise when I hear Chinese people in their 80's and older speak English with no Chinese accent.
Jordan, do you remember the first time you spoke Cantonese in your dream? How did you feel about that?
What’s the proper vocabulary to say “our kids”?
rc o but...that’s how you say kids. Or you just don’t call your own kids that?
@@foreverhobbes I would refer to my son as "my son". The same would be for my daughter. I would say "my daughter". If I were to refer to both (or all of my sons and daughters), I would say in Cantonese, literally, "my son daughter".
rc o oh gotcha. I thought you meant that is not how you say kids. But yes, talking about your own kids is different.
I tried watching a canto movie and can only understand the the gist of the conversation but there are so many words I don't understand every word. Do you two understand every single word in the movie?
No way! A whole movie is difficult!
You guys should check out Guangxi Cantonese on the Wikitongues channel
👍
@6:00 The waiters not acting shocked is a good thing; otherwise it would seem offensive.
Cleveland Chinatown has dim sum!
Had no idea Cleveland had a Chinatown!
More like a Chinastreet but it exists.

Steve and Jordan, thank you for hosting your channel. I've been following you for quite some time. I've been on this journey learning Cantonese and one of the best ways I've learned is in watching Peppa Pig cartoons dubbed in Cantonese. If you or Grace ever make it to Hong Kong, I'd love to take you out for dim sum and give you a tour. Anyways, check out Peppa Pig here: ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=cantonese+peppa+pig God bless!
I think Steve's cantonese is also improved.
Thanks!!
(11:28), Jordan, in Chinese we say "we feel", not "we think". So you should say "ngo gok duck", not "ngo numb". When doing comparisons, you say "ho go", not "ho di".
Ahh good callout!
@@CantoneseCouple Jordan/Steve, please don't take my feedback in the wrong way. My intent is to be helpful, that's all. As I start watching more and more of your videos, if I hear of anything that sticks out like a sore thumb, if you don't mind me commenting, I'll send you a note.
i think the best way to learn cantonese is to daily watch Hong Kong TV show
I agree!
We will have to try to start watching them.
Did he say a swear word?
Don’t think so lol!
Teach your kids
Trying!
xiaoma 's ex girlfan is came from guangdong and he studied chinese in beijing before.
Ahhh... didn’t know that!
1:10 That question was super awkward.
I'm 53 originally from Los Angeles never met a non asian that speaks an asian language.
Wow!!!
What happened to your videos
Just taking a small break. We started homeschooling which takes up quite a bit of time! So just trying to adjust to a new normal. We had a lot more free time in the summer.
Grace can go Chinatown more and speak to people there.
👍
I will try!
