Jordan, Your mother-in-law is so lucky to have you as her daughter-in-law, you tried so hard to learn and practice Cantonese with your in-laws, you are very sweet and thoughtful. I married my husband for 30 years, I never once thought about learning Cantonese so i can communicate with my late mother-in-law, so we basically didn't really speak that much when she was alive. She spoke Cantonese and I speak mandarin. I remember all i said to her every time I saw her was....have you eaten yet? how are you doing? (in Cantonese, that's all I know in Cantonese) 😉😉😉

This helps so much to see, on youtube we see so many people who aren't prefect but still really good at their second language speakers and it feels like they are "flexing" their skills, but I love seeing fellow normal people trying to speak and making some mistakes like normal people. You guys are making so much progress though to it's good to see, and makes me want to practice my Japanese more.

I feel you, Jordan! Whenever I was trying to learn Tagalog as a pre-teen/teenager, I kept asking my parents to speak with me exclusively in the language, but they kept responding in English most of the time! I guess they had a hard time switching to communicating with me in a different language since they started me with English first. I’ve found that in a lot of multilingual families - people get conditioned as to which language goes with which person and it can be awkward to change.

I seldom comment on youtube but I will drop a line here. Your Cantonese is simply amazing, and I had no trouble understanding every word you said in this clip. I am sure you are very talented in mastering languages, but I am more certain that you put a lot of effort in learning Cantonese. Keep it up! Just for fun, maybe you can start reciting ancient Chinese poems. They do go well with Cantonese. Mulan poem is an interesting piece, you can see how easily it rolls off your tongue in Cantonese, and you can also learn about the original Mulan story instead of the one by Disney :-)

@@CantoneseCouple It definitely helps since it gives you more power to connect with the wider Cantonese community (on top of being able to speak to family which I think is the most important part). I was able to learn some Mandarin in college and it felt like I was unlocking a whole new side of my identity since I could understand a lot more talking with friends and picking up cultural knowledge online.
