  • My name is Jordan. I am married to Steve who is an American Born Chinese (美國出生華裔). His family speaks Cantonese and I have been trying to learn. I really love the culture and am trying to teach a little bit of Cantonese to my children. I know that my Cantonese isn't the best, but I hope my kids will be able to speak a little bit of Cantonese in the future.

    it's not apparent in your videos, so maybe people will not realize, but raising 2 small kids and still able to learn cantonese from basically a blank slate takes a lot of dedication.

      And thank you for being refreshingly non-egotistical with the kind words the OP said . This humble attitude is something the current, entitled, hyper-glamorous, narcissistic generation is badly missing.
      All the very best for your future married life.

    I love your videos, they always bring a smile to my face. You guys are such a lovely family! My siblings and I found that watching modern TVB dramas from the early 2000s super helpful for learning Cantonese when we were little, growing up in a western country. We didn't understand exactly what the actors were saying when we were your kids' age either, but it was super helpful in recognizing and thus being able to pronounce the correct tones and pronunciations as we got older. It also made learning Chinese more interesting and less of a chore to learn - you don't want to condition your kids into associating Chinese with something they dread. I'd recommend avoiding historical period TVB dramas though because the actors don't speak in modern conversational Cantonese so they are harder to understand (I still struggle with understanding literary Chinese but the stories are often really epic, and hanfu clothing is beautiful. Dressing up in hanfu would be a lot of fun, maybe you guys can try taking a family photo in hanfu). Here are some of the modern TVB dramas I really liked growing up: a TVB drama from the year 2000 called Return of the Cuckoo (Traditional Chinese: 十月初五的月光, literally "The Moonlight at the 5th of October [Street]", also known as 澳門街, literally "The Streets of Macao"), Triumph in the Skies (衝上雲霄), Heart of Greed (溏心風暴), Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓), Forensic Heroes (法證先鋒) from the year 2006, Hippocratic Crush (also known as On Call 36 Hours (Chinese: On Call 36小時)) from the year 2012. A side note: No Regrets (Chinese: 巾幗梟雄之義海豪情) is a really good drama too but it's about wartimes so probably too heavy for kids, but definitely recommended otherwise, and Catch Me Now (原來愛上賊) is also good. Even if your kids don't want to watch it, it'll be helpful for the adults too, and the only reason I watched TVB dramas when I was little was because my parents watched it with us as a family. I am so glad my family did that because once I was older, it was a lot of fun to watch them since I understood what was going on. If I hadn't watched them since I was little, I think I wouldn't have tried watching them when I was older and would have less of an interest in Chinese culture and the language would've been much harder for me to grasp. Hope that helps and 加油! Add oil! Maintaining proficiency in a language is a lifelong journey.

    I somehow was led to this video while looking at Chinese recipes. I’m so happy you video was recommended for me to find your channel!! I’m so impressed and inspired by you! Jordan, your Cantonese is very good and deserves a lot of praise, but just a small correction. When your daughter kisses you, you don't say "um goy". This type of thank you is only for when someone does something for you, like serves you a glass of water. You can say "doh jye" for thank you to thank her for kissing you.

    Hi! I love your videos! I am british and about to start a family with my british born HK husband. I would love to know how you alter between languages with your baby? Do you spend whole days speaking cantonese and another English or do you flip between them and say a word or phrase in cantonese and immediately repeat in English? Any insight would be great!

    If a second-language speaker can speak fluent Cantonese to her child, then a heritage speaker can do the same.
    I grew up with a Mandarin-speaking family, but for a long time, I remained illiterate. Recently, I have studying Mandarin on my own time since August of last year, and I also speak and write to my parents and extended relatives in Mandarin. When I get married and have kids someday, I will definitely speak to my kids in Mandarin. Hopefully, I will be fully literate by then and can read books to my kids as well.

      kiwifruitkl That all sounds great! :-) But there's no such thing as "writing in Mandarin". Mandarin is a spoken language, just like Cantonese. While having some minor differences, they both share the same Chinese writing system/characters.

    • @proudasiangirl576
      @proudasiangirl576 3 роки тому

      @@sayjaibao01188 So the correct answer should be "writing in Chinese". However, that opens up another can of worms.....there's simplified Chinese which is now widely use. The traditional Chinese writing is mostly in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
