Taylor teaming up with AutoAlex is the best thing ever. This car is lush, I had a 309 with the same engine conversion with a K+N filter and it sounded awesome. I still stand in the corner, weeping and scolding myself for selling it (8yrs ago) 😢
Taylor is brilliant, probably my favourite petrol head on UA-cam. Realy brought back some memories watching this, was always vauxhall myself but had a very good mate who had a 205 with the MI16 converted to run twin webber's on it, was always fun chasing it in my C20LET modded corsa (on track of course).
Nothing better then an 80s/90s hatch with around 200bhp. Keep up with most modern hot hatches bit feel like absolute rocketships because your sat in a tin can.
Cool one, the 309 GTI16 had the same engine, it was a beast at the time, best production hothatch of its era. On the 205, a Swiss tuner was also doing the conversion with the 16v: Gutmann i16v; plus a good tune it was producing 170hp
Loved my 205 GTI’s, had about 7/8 of them when I was younger. It is a phase 2 car as others have said, so the rear lights are correct, and the front indicators should be clear. The seats are out of a 1990 Miami blue limited edition as 1.6 cars never came with leather seats, only fabric. You can lower the seat if it has the plastic riser blocks under the rail! If you’re also going to lower it, you may need a special tool to get the torsion bars out of the trailing arms, they are notoriously seized in there!
1988- Had my first crash in dads 1.6 205 GTI. Dad slammed the kitchen door so hard the glass fell out 🤦🏼. I still have a piece of the front wheel as a reminder of that event…… Anyhow, isn’t Taylor just the best?! Love these vids 👍👍
Those rear lights are correct. A J-reg car should be a phase 2. (Disclaimer: Not a total 205 geek, just had a J-reg 205 myself... a DTurbo in flame red. Very rare!)
Right - it is the amber indicators at the front that are wrong - they should be clear. This facelift was from the end of 1990 so you would have H reg cars that are phase 2.
I have to agree with the comments, Taylor is absolutely awesome as a presenter, his energy, enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge all add up to make him a great guy for the job.
Taylor, the mi 16 engine came out of the Peugeot 405 gti. In fact, memory serves me right it was gunman tuning that put that engine in the 205 first .turbo technics did their business and their was a supercharger conversion. Styling was dimma wide arches plus other companies the list was neaver ending
A real shame he did not get that right, the 405 Mi16 should get the credit it derserved. Excellent handling and very well engineered (apart from the rattly interiour trim) and a lot roomier than a 205.
A video presented this well on the 205 GTI brings a tear to my eye. I got into cars thanks to my dad's black 1.9, well over 15 years ago. "Faster, dad!, tiny me would yell while we were bombing it down B roads at well over 100mph. I really hope we see a lot more of this car. Neither me nor my dad have forgiven him for selling that beautiful nugget of French gold, despite the majority of my life having been post-205.

My dad had a 205 gti 1.6 in white, with the stock foam/rubber spoiler on the boot. One of the most fun cars I've driven. He let me drive on forest backroads when I was 14-15, so much fun!
I love your videos, Taylor. You have such unbridled enthusiasm for cars generally, and your excitement in this one was a joy! And they're the perfect mix of walk-around, discussion, and drive. Can't wait for the next one.
Totally agree!! I had 3 of these - and then built one from 2 cars. One had a blueprint rally engine in it 1.9 with a 1.6 gearbox...that was a machine upto 100mph lol. Interestingly when we resprayed one of them we had a really odd reaction in the same place as that paintwork even though it was all prepped properly.
Really great episode, thank you. Reminds me of the Miami Blue 1.9 Gti I had ‘back in the day’!. A J-reg J62 MLM that turned into J17 PUG and the front cover of Redline Magazine in January 2000! ‘The Millenium Pug’! GTMI-16v-6-speed. 1.9 mi16 from a Citroen BX and a 6-speed from the 306 gti-6. Such the sweet spot. Also had the Peugeot Eccosse body kit on it too and an £8k light weight sound system! Epic times for sure. 🤪
worked at a Peugeot dealer 88 to 93, loved the 405 mi16, the MD had one, and I got to drive it a lot....205 1.9 gti's with a turbo technics conversion, one with a supercharger, great fun.
Had a 205 Rallye for 10 years with most of it living with a 2.0 16v under the bonet. Brings back memmories! Don't know if they still produce for the 205 but you can take a look at Baker BM in the UK for some nice parts

Great review - owned a 1.9 205 GTI ....87 and really enjoyed it - I also had a tuned GOLF 1.9 GTI (BRM racing) but it never quite matched my standard 1.9 205 GTI on performance. Drove a friends RS500 Cosworth Sierra and remember getting straight back in the 205 that I seriously thought was more exiciting!

LOVE this episode. Taylor is great at tugging at the heart strings of boy racers all over the world by buying BRILLIANT hot hatches and not tacky PUG 106s and Saggy Saxos well done Taylor!! Another great purchase
Peugeot enthusiast here. The mi16 engines are awesome, but they have one big flaw; when making fast turns the oil goes to one side of the engine, causing starvation. A big upgrade for these engines is creating a wall in the oil pan to prevent oil going to the sides. Amazing car! LOVE it!!
Awesome purchase. Just sold my D plate GTI6 bodied one last week since owning and building it from 2012. Devastated but hope it’s loved and used as much as it was with me. Fabulous characterful little things!
I had a grey 1992 205 gti with the 2.0 from a 306 gti6 and a few bits and pieces to up it to 190bhp. I kept the 1.6 box as they can take the power but it’s a bit shorter. I absolutely loved surprising EP3s, Focus STs etc. I can’t wait for the rest of the series!
Brilliant episode, this is my favourite car ever. Had one many years ago that needed a lot of work but didn’t have the money at the time to fix it, would love another one especially with that engine.
i whole heartedly agree with Taylor here. not everthing needs to be kept as a museum piece, especily if its something you are going to spend time with, live with and want to make it right for you. sometimes keeping the magic in something is more important than keeping it like the day it came out the factory doors
I'm getting old. Now a days I'd prefer it if the 306 engine had stayed in s 306, cause 306 GTI are cool af. ..but that said: I LOOOVE me a 205 GTI, and hearing this one when pushed, makes me happy. I bet it is a shit ton of fun. ..and they're cute af. Anyways: Congratulations on what seems like a fantastic buy Taylor! SO happy for you, and looking forward to seeing more of this little french car ♥️
I love the 205GTi I bought myself a track 205 XS and it has a mi16 engine with roll cage, buckets, poly carbonate windows the lot, slowly getting it back on the road will be awesome when it's done😊
Back in the days my mother had a 106 with a 1,4 engine. We called it a little flea, it was so nimble and fast. She gave it a lowered sport suspension...She was in her 50 and she loved the little flea :)
I had a 205 SI Auto for my daily commuter for about 9 months. It was a very fun little car to drive. The French electrics drove me mad and it took 2 months to find an indicator flasher relay that worked despite trying every flasher relay and wiring combination possible plus using the wiring diagram. Nope, just didn't work without that magic Peugeot flasher unit from Lithuania.
Man, what a salesman. This channel probably singlehandedly responsible for at least few percent of price-hike random old cars are having over the years. Love this content.
Other than getting the model names wrong, excellent video! Freaking LOVE a 205 gti! Many years ago, i had a go in a 405 mi16, it was bloody brilliant. That engine in a 205 must be awesome! Keep up the good work 👌👍
It always cracks me up when you euros get all hot and bothered by a small displacement NA car. Meanwhile on the otherside of the pond, at 17 I had a stick welder and junkyards full of cars to rob turbos off of. My first little project car was a saturn sc1 that had the single cam head swapped to a twin cam. And then I made a turbo manifold out of a 1990s mitsubishi eclipse turbo manifold. The port spacing was dead on, and about half the studs lined up. So I cut off the other stud holes and welded them on the correct side. So free turbo manifold I made at school in shop class. And a 75$ 14b turbo. Custom made downpipe. Discarded supra side mount intercooler. We used a throttlebody spacer from ebay and added an injector bung to it, and controller it with a hobbs switch off the manifold. So it just dumped a bunch of extra fuel in boost. Years later I fixed it, and got an SAFC-II. But still that car would beat v8s for 1000$ all in. (car included in price)
a 205 gti with a mi16 is absolute hot hatch perfection... I've had 3x 205 gtis.. 1 had a skip brown built mi16 on twin 45 dcoes...that thing was epic. obviously the engines came from a 405... the rear lights are correct as that's a phase 2 on a 91
The car is a throw back to when modding and then enjoying cars didn’t mean pops and bangs remaps and a gazillions horsepower. More relevant now than ever, well done Taylor and team.
J reg 92, the rear lights are correct, they were Galvanized from the factory, they do rust in places but tent to hold up better than other cars of the same age.
Definitely have an affinity to the 205. My first car was a 205 XS. Used to fling that thing around the back roads and had so much fun. Always wanted a Gti but was too young at the time and now I’m in the states will have to live vicariously through this series.
This car... I remember working in a garage in 2000. One of the mechanics had a 205 1.9 gti. What a machine, was dirt cherap back then. Really was the golden era of second hand cheap cool cars!
I used to install these engine conversions in the early 1990s at Coventry Peugeot Specialists, the 1.6 gearbox can handle the extra power of the 405 Mi16 engine no problem, but it's a short ratio box when compared with the 1.9s, so it makes sense to use the longer ratio box with the extra power.
Taylor is an unreal presenter. Feels like he’s done it for years.
When you think about it selling is like presenting and he's done that for a while 😎

And take a bit of silencing off the exhaust, not too much, but just enough to give the sound a bit of raspiness.
I had a Miami blue 1.6 gti I put a 1.9 mi16 lump with Kent cams on it i regret selling it massively
Regret selling mine also, such a well balanced car
This v2 chanel is becoming a Taylors chanel... Good on ya Taylor, keep dooing the good work 💪🍻
7:47 I think you mean Mansory Glue!
Mate this was such a good rewiew of the car. It brings me old Top gear vibes in mind, but without a tv bullshit. Great job. Wish You all the best !
worlds coolest must be renault 5 turbo 1 and 2 :D not pug
Golf GTI 1 and 2 cooler .Lotus .Sunbeam cooler and faster and out way earlier .Fiat Uno turbi ie cooler too
I had a grey 1992 205 gti with the 2.0 from a 306 gti6 and a few bits and pieces to up it to 190bhp.
Really enjoyed this, well done Taylor, looking forward to more content too👏👏
Love it! I'm on my 3rd 205 GTi and this one have kswapped. 240 bhp and it's mental.
Can't wait to see what you do with it 😁🤘🏻
i whole heartedly agree with Taylor here. not everthing needs to be kept as a museum piece, especily if its something you are going to spend time with, live with and want to make it right for you. sometimes keeping the magic in something is more important than keeping it like the day it came out the factory doors
Plain, simple and absolutely brilliant videos from Taylor
Taylor is a star, I think he’s been the best chap on these channels since I saw him bring along a dodgy Land Rover to a comparison review years ago!
I know it's been said by others in the comments but Taylor is amazing at presenting. I really enjoy his videos.
Love this, been looking forward to this video for ages, ngl - ever since you mentioned it on the podcast.. Great stuff!
I’ve came to love and appreciate French hot hatches since purchasing my 2019 308 gti. Great presenting as always!
